"I grew up in Oklahoma City. As soon as I was legally able to, I got a job working in my grandpa's insurance office doing clerical work and data entry. By the time I turned 18, they promoted me to administrative assistant. I took a gap year before I went to college. I've always had a strong work ethic. During my four years of college, I repeated my success in high school, graduating with a 4.0-grade point average. As you can see on my resume, I worked at my last firm for eight years, and they suffered some major cutbacks. A lot of folks lost their job, but not me. Yet there were no real career advancement opportunities left, which is what me here today."

"I am more of an analyst type and prefer to be in the background, making the numbers happen. With that said, I am still a people person and would always put my best face forward in any customer-facing situation."

"Even though it can be difficult to hear criticism, I always pause before I respond and take time to think about it first. If it catches me by surprise, I usually ask if my superior can clarify or explain. I want to grow and improve, so the more specific my supervisor can be, the more helpful it is."

"I understand that insurance policies and contracts can appear complicated to my clients. I will walk them through each section before they sign and use simpler terms and analogies when needed. I have often had clients comment on my ability to relay the information to them in an easy-to-understand method."

"Yes, insurance contracts can be difficult to understand! I do not want to assume that a client is struggling, so I will let them go through the contract at their own pace and then encourage questions through all steps in the process."

Tell me about an error or mistake you made involving a communication breakdown.

"I recall one instance where I misread an email from one of my subordinates. The punctuation was incorrect, and I read it in a negative tone rather than a positive one, as it was intended. After a tense conversation, the employee clarified her intention, and I realized I was mistaken. She and I agreed to exercise verbal communication regularly to avoid a similar situation from happening again."

There is an expression that says, 'message sent is the message received.' When delegating, just because you feel you passed the information on what to do, doesn't mean you've successfully relayed how to do the job right, why the job is being done, or the stakes involved. When offering your example, be sure to bookend it with how you observed the situation, what you learned from the experience, and how your communication improved.This question focuses on your communication skills, so ensure your answers are consistent. How you communicate your answer is just as relevant as your example. Avoid using speech crutches, such as 'um,' 'like,' 'you know,' and 'etcetera.' "I rate my communication skills as a 9/10 as I am not always as clear as I would like to be. My supervisor and co-workers will attest to my clear and concise communication skills. Because I am an open leader, my team will let me know if I need to clarify anything."

Your communication skills can be rated by your writing skills, verbal communication skills, body language, nonverbal cues, and even what you neglect to say. If you're in a supervisory position, and your mood and body language are inconsistent with your words, your staff may misinterpret those cues and take them personally. "I make sure to utilize my work hours very efficiently, so the only time I take my work home is when there is an extremely stringent deadline. I would say that, overall, I take my work home maybe twice per month. It's all about being diligent with your time in the office!"

What do you want your retirement to look like?

"I want to be living comfortably and working part-time - setting my own schedule and staying active, but being able to take it easy and sit on the porch overlooking a prairie and drinking a lemonade whenever I want. My spouse loves horses, so we'd have horses, too. I'm more of a cat person, but I've seen a lot of fun videos where cats and horses are getting along, so I see no problem there. That's the image I have in my mind of what retirement looks like for me. I feel like I'm pretty set up for that to be our reality. You'll hear nothing but gratitude coming from me."

How effectively you work with the other departments and teams in your company, whether on a macro or micro scale, is a reflection of the company itself. Based on my experience, for a large project to work seamlessly among all teams, it is important to communicate up front and agree on the details and expected results. In your most recent position, what was the size of your client portfolio? How manageable was that for you to handle?

"With my current company, I have a portfolio of $55M, which I grew from $15M when I first started. I am comfortable with this volume but can certainly handle more if required. May I ask what the average Insurance agent's book of business looks like with Sun Life Financial Inc.?"

Sometimes a career-minded professional will strive to progress and take on too much responsibility with the desire to overachieve. However, this can often result in over-promising and under-delivering. It is rarely sustainable and can lead to increased stress, delivering a poor experience, job dissatisfaction, and burnout. "The biggest change I have seen in the Insurance industry since my start in 1999 has to do with technology. There are many great mobile trends now, including apps that make information simple and easy to access. It's been incredible to see."

"I feel that globalization has forced many companies to be creative and flexible in their business insurance needs - namely, companies that now have international offices, hire offshore employees, and participate in global trade. It has caused the Insurance industry to think outside of the box and has, in my opinion, created some very thought-provoking challenges."

"I am adaptable and can rise to the occasion, whatever the need. I am self-guided in my work, competitive with myself, and hold myself accountable for meeting my own expectations. I have a pretty high standard I adhere to. I'm fine working under supervision as well. Everybody has a job to do, and I'll do my best to support both my team leaders and my team. It's all about keeping your eye on that big picture."

"I understand that your work environment is very collaborative. I come from a similar environment and found that I could be very productive in a collaborative environment."

This question tests your adaptability, what gives you job satisfaction, and what will cause you to burn out on the job. Remember, when facing similar questions, you want to keep your answer consistent while not sounding redundant by repeating the same answer again and again. "I am most productive when I'm focused without distractions when I try to understand something, analyzing or solving a problem. What causes you to feel dissatisfied with your job?

"I can feel dissatisfaction on the job when I don't feel heard or when there is no mutual respect among the team members. I work best in more harmonious situations with little drama or gossip."

Attitude is everything. Rather than focusing on the negatives, focus on the positives. Volunteer what you look for in your ideal working environment. Share the motivators and self-drivers that fuel your productivity and make you look forward to coming to work. Then explain that when those elements are absent, it subtracts from your ideal working conditions and creates a less-than-ideal working environment, which makes you less satisfied with your experience.

"I have felt dissatisfied on the job when I feel underpaid and overworked. I don't mind working hard at all, but I don't like to feel as though I'm being taken advantage of."

Do you prefer working within a predetermined set of rules or a more unrestrained creative work?

"In the workplace, I naturally lean towards my preference of straightforward rules and expectations. From there, once I am comfortable with my knowledge base, I can start to think outside of the box. So - to answer your question - I would say I bring a healthy balance of both."

This question is nuanced. How you answer will help your interviewer determine if you'll burn out quickly from the more monotonous aspects of the job. It will also tell them if you have a propensity for thinking outside the box and can take a more innovative approach to your work when the need arises. Most organizations prefer to hire candidates who can apply creative thinking when needed but can also follow protocol and guidelines. Assure the interviewer that you can achieve both. If you have a personal preference, that is fine, as it will inform them how to play on your strengths. But flexibility and an ability to step outside of your comfort zone are highly desirable traits.

"I am most comfortable when my creativity is challenged. I like to think of new ways of working and create alternate solutions to scenarios. With that said, I am more than capable of following a predetermined set of rules."

"I have no issues following a predetermined set of rules such as protocols and procedural manuals/checklists. I consider myself a creative thinker when the situation calls for it. When it comes to analysis and problem-solving I tend to be a creative thinker."

What leadership qualities do you possess?

"I feel that I am good at motivating a team. Last year, I motivated my sales team every day, and we ended up being the top sales team in the company for the year!"

However, your basic leadership skills will make you a more desirable candidate. "I feel that employees should be paid and rewarded based on their performance. A new employee would be greatly motivated through being rewarded for performance, and it encourages healthy competition with tenured employees."

So I gave them space when they seemed to need it. I kept plugging away and would do little extras to help them whenever I could. Eventually, they warmed up to me. I kept scratching their back, and when they scratched mine, I gave them the appreciation they seemed to need. We finished the project early, and I sang their praises, wanting nothing in return. The next thing I knew, this person started treating me like their best friend. And you know what? We're good friends still to this day."

"My experience building teams is limited to structuring the groups our larger team was composed of. Six of us were dedicated to a major project, and I volunteered to be the team leader. So I divided the group into three pairs and assigned those groupings based on everyone's strengths. The project was a success, and we beat our deadline. Other than that, back in college, I started a chess club. There wasn't a club like it, so I decided to create the one club I was interested in joining. It took a lot of effort. My work included defining the club's purpose, creating a constitution, recruiting and assessing interest, electing my club's officers, running our first meeting, and spreading the word. I learned a lot from that experience. I am proud to say the club is still going today."
