When have you had to adapt to change?

"In my current role there is a lot of turnover when it comes to our management team. I have had to adapt to 3 new managers in the past 4 years. It is not the ideal situation but I am able to adjust for the good of the team."

Being able to adapt to change in the workplace is a very important skill to possess. Talk to the interviewer about a time when you have had to adjust to changes on the job. How did you handle the change? Was it a positive reaction?

"Last year our company was sold to a competitor and a lot of our management team changed hands. It was a lot of change to handle in a short time."

Would you say you focus more on reasons why change will not work rather than adapting to new changes?

"When a change occurs in the workplace I initially try to balance the pros and the cons before reacting. Overall I would say that I prefer to focus on why the changes will work. I am a positive person by nature, and as long as the reasons behind change and the potential benefits of implementing that change are clearly communicated by leadership, I've found that most team members will be generally accepting."

When a change occurs in the workplace do you view it positively or do you resist the change? Talk to the interviewer about how you adapt to change.

"I am happy to adapt to changes as long as they make sense and help with productivity. I am a team player and will always choose the positive side of things rather than dwelling on potential difficulties. I'm also very pragmatic and understand the concept of 'adapt or die.' I know that any successful organization must continually adapt to its environment in order to ultimately thrive, so change within the workplace is entirely expected."

What questions do you have for me about working with Ralph Lauren?

"Thank you very much; I do have a few questions for you. First and foremost, what is the company's long-term vision for this particular role, and one year from now, how will you know that the new employee has been successful? What does that success look like?"

It's always a great idea to have questions ready for the interviewer. Review the company website and other online resources to ensure the questions you are asking are not mundane, or redundant. The last thing an interviewer wants to hear is a list of items you could have found the answers to from merely watching a video on their company site!

"Thank you for asking - I do have a few questions. What is top of mind when it comes to filling this role? Also, what types of career growth opportunities would follow this position? And lastly, do you have internal candidates who are also interviewing for this position?"

Outside of work, what type of creative activities do you like to pursue?

"Outside of work I like to attend dance classes and I also attend the odd paint and sip wine nights at a local wine shop. I also enjoy reading as a way of nurturing my creative side."

A genuinely creative minded person will have outside activities aside from what's happening in the workplace. Tell the interviewer about the variety of ways in which you express your creativity.

"I am an active person and believe in the importance of pursuing creative interests outside of work. I most enjoy working out, hiking, bicycling and attending pottery classes."

When did you realize that you wanted a career in fashion?

"I have had an interest in fashion ever since I was a child. I would create outfits for my dolls and do fashion shows with my friends. My passion for the industry has been present from the beginning."

The interviewer would like to know what led you to a career in fashion. Talk about your passion for the industry and where it all started. You can draw on some personal points but try to keep your answer brief and to the point.

"I realized in my teens that fashion was so much more than just the clothes you wear. In 9th grade I did a presentation on the evolution of fashion. The research I conducted really opened my eyes to the statements that designers make through their collections. I was hooked!"

Why do you want to work for Ralph Lauren?

"Well, in addition to working for a company that has a timeless style which I have always resonated with, the people here seem to form a culture of similar sensibilities as my own. I'd say it is the atmosphere of encouragement, where dedicated, engaged, and focused artists are empowering each other to be creative, to be themselves, and to push their limits towards greater success. For example, how the company has an employee relief fund, where everyone in the Ralph Lauren family can help each other out. That's amazing. And how the company matches donation contributions and encourages its people to volunteer because they really do care. That's why I want to work here. I want to work in a culture where art and family are one. And, to me, the company is definitely more than just clothes, or goods for the home, from bedding to fine furniture to elegant dishware. It really is about a whole lifestyle. So, I want to work somewhere that feels like home."

How you answer this question should inform your interviewer of your motives for pursuing this position, and whether you are pursuing it for the right reasons. Someone who is primarily interested in the pay and the perks will probably be less committed to the company. What type of work environment allows you to be the most productive?

"I understand from researching Ralph Lauren that your work environment is highly collaborative. I come from a similar environment and have found that I can be very productive when there is the 'buzz' of a team around me. I love the synergy of brainstorming with smart colleagues who are at the top of their fields. I find that they inspire me to really bring my A game, and I appreciate that extra boost of creative energy that comes from sharing ideas with others."

Are you able to be productive in any environment? Are there particular types of situations that you find distracting? Discuss your preferences with the interviewer. Be sure to research the kind of environment offered in this position before the interview.

"I work well in a high pressure, demanding environment that requires you to work smart and make your mark. I am competitive in nature and love to be challenged on a personal and professional level. I am excited and motivated by winning, whether that be winning over a new client, exceeding my KPIs or being recognized for a job well done. I am also motivated and energized by a strong team that supports and challenges one another."

What career path interests you the most in this company?

"What interests me most about your company is that there are so many options when it comes to career growth. Ideally, I would like to earn my way into a Territory Sales role, then a Regional Manager position. Eventually, a Director of Sales or Marketing position would be ideal. Of course, I understand that this will take many years of dedication and hard work."

This is where it is really important to have completed some research on the interviewing company. Be sure to envision where you can see yourself fitting, and growing, with the organization prior to your interview. Do some research on what a career path could look like with this particular company.

"I am interested in a variety of paths with your company. I could absolutely see myself working in your sales and marketing department as I further my knowledge on your product and collections. I'd really like to look into the options you offer for job rotations - I believe doing so can offer invaluable experience and knowledge of various roles and paths within the company."

Have you progressed in your career as you have expected?

"Overall, my career has progressed a touch slower than I would have liked. I have held a couple of positions that didn't offer the growth and learning that I was expecting; however, I have have made a point to learn as much as I possibly can, no matter the specific position or implied career path. I feel that this particular position is a reasonable next step to take my career in a satisfying direction."

Career progression can be a touchy subject, especially if you feel that your career hasn't progressed as well as you would have liked. Talk to the interviewer about your career progression and what you would like to see in the future.

"I am very happy with my career progression thus far. I've been so fortunate that great opportunities have come my way at the best times, and I've been positioned in such a way as to be able to take advantage of them. Overall, I believe that this position with Ralph Lauren is a positive fit for me at this stage in my career, plus the kind of team environment and ambition-focused culture I'm seeking. "

Tell the interviewer what your ideal employer looks like. Be specific and be sure to keep the conversation positive. Avoid speaking poorly of any previous managers or organizations.

"In the day-to-day, my ideal employer/supervisor is one who allows me to take the reins when it comes to problem-solving. I like to be hands-on and prefer to work for people who value this in me. My ideal supervisor might let me struggle a bit with a problem before just jumping in and showing me the answer."

Your current employer has a strong reputation in the fashion industry. Why do you want to work for Ralph Lauren?

"I have worked with Company ABC for the past 5 years and because they are a smaller organization there is no longer room for me to grow unless I were to relocate. This is why I am seeking a new opportunity. Working for Ralph Lauren would allow me to grow into bigger opportunities - the Ralph Lauren culture is known as dynamic, collaborative and innovative, and I'd like to be part of that."

Discuss with the hiring manager the ways in which you feel that working for Ralph Lauren will provide you with the aspects you are currently missing in your position.

"I have had my eye on openings with Ralph Lauren for quite some time. I have heard excellent things about working here - I know you're looking for team members who are the strongest, most creative people in the world, and I believe I fit that description."

Do you think it is possible to be a good team member, yet disagree with the leader?

"What makes a great team member is not that they agree with everything but the level of respect and positive thought that goes into the person's communication style. It's okay to disagree; however, you have to communicate your thoughts professionally and ultimately comply with the leader's decision on a particular issue."

The interviewer wants to know that you can be diplomatic in the workplace, even when you may not agree with your leader. Show the interviewer that it is possible for you to be a good team member, yet disagree with the leader from time to time. Explain that you believe everyone is entitled to their own professional opinion, yet capable of maintaining respect for each other at the same time. Show that even if you disagree with the final decision they make, you support the direction the team is heading.

"I have had team members disagree with decisions that I have made as a manager, and it does not bother me unless they are disrespectful about the situation. I think it's great to face challenging thoughts in the workplace and I welcome varying trains of thought. In fact, I believe that sometimes disagreeing with the leader is the strongest sign of a good team member. If someone disagrees with me because they have the greater good of the team and/or the company in mind, then I want to hear that. And as a strong leader, I need to hear it."

What can you tell me about the Ralph Lauren culture?

"I've enjoying researching the Ralph Laurent culture. From what I understand, your team is defined by its passion to forge ahead to evolve the company's legacy of excellence. Ralph Lauren himself is such a paragon of work ethic, determination and ambition that I can't imagine the whole company wouldn't be infused with that kind of spirit, which sounds very exciting to me."

Before your interview, take the time to research a little bit about the Ralph Lauren culture. What does it mean to work there and what are the expectations for fitting in with the rest of the team? What qualities define a Ralph Lauren employee.

'I love what I've learned about the Ralph Lauren culture in preparation for this interview. It sounds like belonging is very important to the company culture - your work together as one team, but you also value individuality, which is so important. I'm particularly excited about the RL Idea Lab, a place to let all voices be heard, engaged and elevated."

What does it mean to you when Ralph Lauren says that his brand is about living?

"I love this quote from Ralph Lauren, and I've always loved his sensibility when it comes to evoking a certain kind of lifestyle through his brands. The Ralph Lauren cache is closely tied to Americana and the American dream and rooted in entrepreneurial spirit. Ralph himself is an outstanding example of how hard work, talent and ambition can lead to tremendous success, which is woven throughout the fabric of the American spirit."

The interviewer would like to see that you have some familiarity with the Ralph Lauren brand personality, which is largely driven by the designer himself. Take some time before the interview to research Ralph Lauren and his vision for his company and brands. What kind of feeling and lifestyle do they evoke?

"I think the Ralph Lauren brand is not just about living - it's about living your best life. It's about elegance and sophistication; the original polo brand represented high class at its very highest. When someone makes a Ralph Lauren brand purchase, they're looking for a way to infuse their life with something fine, something timeless and classic that represents the highest quality. It's a very strong brand with a loyal following of people who are committed to an elegant lifestyle."

Why should we hire you?

"Ralph Lauren should bring me onboard simply because, in many ways, I am already a member of the family. I grew up in a home furnished by Ralph Lauren. In fact, my parents were such patrons of the company that friends of the family called our home the Ralph Lauren Gallery. This carried over into my adulthood. Look at my wardrobe and you'll understand. Aside from that, my work ethic speaks for itself. I work extremely hard and smart and love what I do with a passion. I am a calculated risk-taker who has a lot of integrity and who always can be counted on to do the right thing. I am reliable, trustworthy, entrepreneurial, creative, strong, and I am passionate about the Ralph Lauren brand."

Your interviewer wants to know why you feel you are the right person for this job. This differs from asking you why you want to work there. Rather, they're asking why you think they should hire you. Your answer should be unique and have as equal a focus on Ralph Lauren as it does on you. So spend time familiarizing yourself with how they define their culture, how they describe their people, their teams, and the relationships between them. Pay attention to how they describe the work ethic they pride themselves on, their expectations, and how they are united in purpose. "Love what you do, be passionate, work hard, embrace individuality, work together, take risks, do the right thing, stand up for what you believe in, aspire to the best."

People will give you extra effort if they know that you care. When we take care of our employees, our employees then will take care of our consumers. The culture and the value system that's in place with Ralph Lauren, it comes through movement, opportunity, trying different things. It's just part of how we operate and do business."They also talk about the people who come to work for Ralph Lauren, seeing it as more than just a job. They see it as a lifestyle. "It's not just about the clothes, it's about a whole lifestyle. This isn't a job you have for two years or three years. There are people here that are here for 30 years. And once you get into the family, it's a family you never want to leave. People make decisions to stay for a very long time because the culture is right. Because of how important they feel and how connected they feel to that culture. It's an extremely hard-working group of people here. And extremely talented."

In your opinion, which designer has been the biggest fashion trailblazer in the past decade?

"I feel that the biggest fashion trailblazer in the past decade is Vera Wang. She is everywhere and her style speaks to people of all walk and budgets. I love that she can design clothes, wedding dresses, couture, and even home goods - proving that fashion isn't limited and is truly an art."

The interviewer would like to know that you have a true interest in fashion and the ability to have an intellectual opinion on the happenings in the fashion world. Give your personal opinion on your favourite fashion trailblazer and back up your reasoning.

"The fascinating thing about the fashion industry is that there is no real one trailblazer anymore. Designers can make a huge impact when they are barely known, and sometimes the designers who are household names, have an 'off' year. At this moment in time, I feel that Tom Ford is the best known trailblazer because his style has remained distinct and consistent throughout the years."

What can you tell me about the way Ralph Lauren develops its employees?

"I was very encouraged to see that Ralph Lauren values life-long learners and is committed to providing the tools and resources for employees to navigate a career journey fueled by passion. That's very important to me right now in making a career move. I'm thankful that Ralph Lauren seems to offer a number of opportunities and resources, in addition to encouraging its team members to never stop learning, stretching and developing as valuable members of a global team."

The company wants to see that you've done some research into what your future could look like at Ralph Lauren. Take the time to scan the company website and find out everything you can about employee development so that you can speak confidently.

"I am very excited by what I've learned about the Ralph Lauren talent development approach. I see that the company is deeply invested in employees' personal development and offers continuous learning opportunities ranging from on-the job training to peer-to-peer collaboration and formal training both inside and outside the Company. I love the company's statement that your career doesn't have to be a straight line, but can be thought of more as a shoelace. I'm also very encouraged that Ralph Lauren offers job rotations - because the way your skills, talents, and passions tie together are how you find your best self. Overall, it seems like a comprehensive and effective approach."

What is your favorite Ralph Lauren product and what do you love about it?

"I hope this doesn't sound too boring, but I love a Ralph Lauren white cotton Oxford shirt. I have one now that I love to wear with jeans and flats or jeans and riding boots, and I think it's probably the 10th one I've owned over the years. I always have to have one on hand; it's perfect for casual weekends or even business meetings with a nice skirt and jacket."

Display to the interviewer that you know the Ralph Lauren brand from your own personal experience - what does it mean to you? Showing that you have that kind of personal connection can indicate the level of passion you'll bring to this new role.

"Hands-down, my favorite Ralph Lauren product is my Ralph Lauren Romance perfume. I got hooked on Romance as a teenager, and I've never gotten over the addiction. It's my go-to scent. it's such a wonderful blend of rose and citrus that it manages to be both sweet and fresh as the same time. I haven't found anything to beat it!"

We work hard to keep a harmonious workplace culture at Ralph Lauren. Have you ever had a conflict with a manager? How did you resolve it?

"Nobody enjoys conflict in the workplace; however, I have experienced it before. In my previous position, there was a miscommunication with my manager related to my work schedule. He accidentally scheduled me on a requested day off, and I felt disrespected. I reacted faster than I should have because once we discussed it, I realized he had made an honest mistake. I am a firm believer that with mutual respect, conflicts can resolve rather quickly. I learned to slow my reaction time."

The interviewer would like to know how you react to a conflict situation, and how active you are in attempting resolution. Use a real-life example if you can. If you are newer to your career, this could include a case of a conflict with a professor (perhaps you disagreed with a grade you received). How you behave in a conflict situation will be critical information for the interviewer.

"I pride myself on being able to maintain a harmonious relationship with those who are considered my leaders. Anytime my relationship with a supervisor hasn't been amazing, I've made a lot of effort to adapt, including trying to understand what the supervisor values most and delivering it, making sure to keep my cool at all times, trying to anticipate his or her needs and adapt to preferences, and also taking every possible leadership opportunity in order to show my worth."

Excellent customer service is very important to us at Ralph Lauren. How do you handle challenging customers?

"I'm often called upon in my current role to assist customers who are frustrated, disappointed or angry. In these situations, I always listen first, then validate the customer's feelings before jumping to solutions. Customer service issues can be frustrating, and I want them to know I am on their side. Once the customer feels heard, I then begin troubleshooting the issue and working to resolve it. I won't leave a service call until I know the customer is delighted, and I believe this approach will fit well within the Ralph Lauren culture."

The interviewer would like to know that you remain professional, helpful, and calm when dealing with customers of all kinds. If you can, give a specific example of a time when you successfully assisted a challenging customer.

"Challenging customers are present in any industry, and I have experienced a wide range of them in my career, so far. I find that upset customers just feel like their problems are not heard. By offering an empathetic ear to their situation, I can usually diffuse the situation immediately. I will ask them what they feel a suitable solution is and then provide that solution, or as close to it as possible."

How do you stay on top of trends in the fashion industry?

"I stay on top of trends through reading high fashion magazines and browsing sites like Pinterest and Instagram. I also follow a few design houses and fashion bloggers on a variety of social media platforms."

Fashion is always changing and trends change faster than any other industry. Talk to the interviewer about the ways in which you stay in tune with new and top trends.

"My favorite place to stay on top of fashion trends is Instagram. I follow a multitude of trend setters, designers, and stylists. I find it easy and fast to scroll through the feed and see what others are wearing, and talking about."

Tell me about yourself.

"Well, I was fortunate to have had something of a privileged upbringing. My mother was a successful stockbroker, so we were often surrounded by beautiful places and beautiful things, with style, and in style. Both she and my father had an appreciation for the finer things in life. And, as I started my career, I realized how important these sensibilities of authenticity and timeless style meant to me. As time went on, I realized I wanted to work in an environment that celebrated these sensibilities, but also surrounded by coworkers who celebrated this as well. I needed to work in teams that share my brand of artistic appreciation, who were equally dedicated for similar reasons, who care about each other, and are their genuine authentic selves. I realized in that environment, I could be my own genuine, authentic self. So, this is what I am in pursuit of, and that's my story of how I ended up here, at Ralph Lauren."

Recruiting is a challenging job. Most interviewers will admit that the best interviews are when a candidate is being themself. Any experienced interviewer has a strong sense of when the talent they're interviewing is nervous, disingenuous, or isn't being fully honest or forthright. When this is the case, their work is that much more challenging, because it's their job to get to know the candidate for who. they are, which will help them identify whether they are their target talent. This is no different for Ralph Lauren's recruiters. Their primary objective is to get to know you, the candidate, and to determine if you have the skills and experience to perform at the job you are interviewing for. Lastly, they describe their "world-class teams" which they've worked so hard to build as entrepreneurial, creative, strong, who've built strong collaborative relationships with each other, and together are driven to elevate and celebrate authentic American design and culture.

What do you know about the Ralph Lauren Diversity and Inclusion Mission?

"I learned while preparing for this interview that Ralph Lauren has five global pillars of focus when it comes to diversity and inclusion: Multicultural, Disability, Gender, LGBTQ+ and Multigenerational. I appreciate this methodical approach to include all groups that have historically been marginalized. I believe that Ralph Lauren fosters a culture of inclusion with a set of principles that run through an employee's entire life at the Company."

"From what I've read, it seems that Ralph Lauren takes diversity and inclusion very seriously and puts tremendous effort and resources toward making sure all team members are appreciated and included. I love that the company supports conscious inclusion by ensuring open dialogue, knowledge through education and leadership accountability. I also appreciate the use of employee groups to give people a voice in shaping the company culture. According to what I read about your diversity and inclusion mission, your focus on diversity and inclusion is at the heart of your values, and you create an environment where all people have a sense of belonging and can thrive to be their best."

Ralph Lauren is a global brand with employees from all over the world. What is your experience working with a diverse group of people?

"The global nature of the Ralph Lauren business is one that I'm most excited about. I'm accustomed to being around people who aren't exactly like me, and I've been able to learn from exposure to a lot of different perspectives. However, I believe that truly being part of the global economy will be a life-changing experience that I will relish."

Are you accustomed to working with a very large or diverse team of individuals? Assure the interviewer that you are enthusiastic about and can handle an environment that offers diversity.

"In my current company, we have a very diverse group of people that range in age, race, experience, gender, and more. I embrace it fully, and the commitment to all types of style, no matter what it looks like or where it's from, is one of my favorite aspects of the Ralph Lauren brand."

Tell me about your last visit to a Club Monaco store. What was your experience like?

"I can tell that your customer service employees receive a great deal of training in the Ralph Lauren elegance and luxury approach. I've always had a positive customer experience at any of your brands' stores. My last visit, I was having trouble finding a specific product. As soon as I came across a customer service employee, they knew what I was looking for and found it for me right away. I was impressed with how knowledgeable and friendly she was, and I would hope to emulate that, should I be hired."

The interviewer is looking for a couple of things here - first, your knowledge of the Club Monaco brand as part of the Ralph Lauren portfolio. And second, that you can connect your experience there to the overall Ralph Lauren brand goals. Keep your reply positive and upbeat!

"During my last visit to a Club Monaco brand store, I made a huge purchase. Once I arrived home, I realized that I had grabbed the wrong shade of one of my favorite products. It was no problem for me to make the exchange later that week. Your staff was warm and accommodating, and that made me want to continue shopping that particular brand. Overall, the store experience reinforced the Ralph Lauren feeling of elegance and sophistication."

Sales performance is very important to Ralph Lauren. How do you plan to contribute to our profitability?

"I plan to contribute to your profitability through hard work, strategy, tenacity and paying close attention to the needs of customers. I have solid results in my most recent position and look forward to bringing these same successes to Ralph Lauren."

Talk to the interviewer about your sales targets, results, and contributions in the past. Be sure to highlight your biggest wins and talk about the ways you will bring the same performance to Ralph Lauren, if hired.

"My first step would be to examine current performance against KPIs and then develop a 30-, 60- and 90-day plan for how I can help the company achieve, and even exceed, tahem. I have a solid history of identifying strong lead measures that help support overall organizational strategies, and then leading a team to achieve those measures."

If you were hired today, what would you accomplish first?

"When we were speaking earlier, about sales targets in this position, you mentioned that most new sales professionals hit their KPI's after 120 days. If I were hired today, my goal would be to exceed my KPI's after the first 90 days. I plan to make a positive impact very quickly."

"If I were hired today I would place my focus where you have the greatest need. In my opinion, the biggest impact I can make is through being a dedicated employee."

What are your weaknesses?

"Well, I would say that one of my weaknesses is sometimes struggling to find the right questions to ask. You see, when I started my career journey, and my supervisors were offering me advice, they just kept repeating that I should keep asking questions. But this wasn't very good advice, since my first question was hoping to learn what questions I should be asking. Now, I compulsively ask questions. But sometimes I get too focused on answering questions that hold less priority than what I should be asking right now. But my inquisitive nature is partly what fuels my passion to develop and grow and to find my direction. I liked what it said on Ralph Lauren's website, tailoring your own career path, by design. That's what I am doing. But I suppose sometimes I get too focused on answering those big-picture career questions and lighting the path to get there, that I lose focus on the more pressing short-term goals. But it is something I am focusing on, and have made a lot of improvement in since I started working on it."

"My former boss would definitely describe me as an employee who goes the extra mile. In my most recent position, I was always available on my email and many of my service clients had my cell phone number just in case of an after-hours emergency. When you call my reference he will be happy to expand on that for you, I am sure."

You can absolutely say that you will go the extra mile but it's best to give a real life example to the interviewer about a time when you did just that. Offer up your references as well and discuss with the interviewer what you feel your most recent employer would say about you.

"I go the extra mile whenever possible because that's what great employees do! I have received very positive feedback from all of my previous employers."

What are your salary expectations?

"Currently, I earn a base salary of $45,000 per year plus a potential 20% annual bonus. Last year my earnings were $52,000, and I would like to stay in the same range or gain a slight increase. According to my research, this seems consistent with the market."

The best way to discuss your salary expectations is to use your current earnings as an example. Be open and honest. Transparency is the best choice when salary based questions arise.

"I would like to earn slightly above where I am now. I am currently making $100,000 per year with two bonus opportunities. I am looking for compensation that is aligned with the role and provides an opportunity for growth. If that is out-of-range for this position, I would hope we could discuss alternative benefits and/or a path to reach that salary goal."

"In my current role, I occasionally need to spend additional time mentoring and coaching new employees to ensure they fit in with the team. I would bring this same commitment to team development to this position at Ralph Lauren."
