Because I had built relationships with the people in the department first, they were more open to the change. Within the first year, we produced 30% more revenue with no added staff because of the changes I recommended."

She recommended that I come to check with her to get help prioritizing in the future. I learned a big lesson about asking your leader to advocate for you. I should have come to her first. I've kept this in mind when I've had competing deadlines."

As hard as I tried, I couldn't submit it on time. I was devastated. I called my professor, who understood, but I got a reduced grade because it was late. I learned that I should have chosen a data source that was more readily available to me but also that I could have looped in my professor earlier, who might have had another idea."

"When I was a freshman at college, I was taking English 2. The final paper had been due at 12 pm, which was stated by the professor in class. However, I made the mistake of not listening correctly and assuming the paper was due at midnight. I, therefore, ended up submitting my paper 12 hours late and had no idea that I had submitted it late until the professor emailed me the following day that I will get no credit. I explained to the professor why the paper had been turned in late, and I had apologized and explained that it was entirely my fault. The professor was kind enough to be forgiving to the situation as I turned all my other assignments in on time. However, I learned valuable lessons such as, pay attention to due dates and not to assume."

Talk about how you've adapted to a specific change in technology on the job in the past. What did you do to make things easier on yourself?

"A couple of years ago, my organization implemented an advanced transport management software system. As we were working toward the rollout of the new system, my team realized the huge changes the new system would bring. Handwritten bills would be a thing of the past, and manual tracking of shipments would no longer need to occur. While some feared the changes it would bring, the new system made us much more efficient and allowed us to focus on customer-focused issues when internal things were automatically handled. To me, keeping an open mind to the change and working hard to train effectively on the system made the implementation as smooth as possible."

I researched how to engineer something like this, even though that is far out of my scope as a salesperson. I was then put on a project team to explore developing this upgraded product. Our team was able to research, design, and launch a product that my physicians were so excited about. It was the most challenging and rewarding experience!"

"A few years ago, I noticed my peer struggling with her communication with another leader. He would get very anxious and even out of breath when telling me about what was going on. One of the times that he was venting to me, I asked a few more questions to probe deeper. Because of my questions, my colleague was able to think of a few different strategies to try when working with this person in the future. Asking questions can be very powerful."

"Last year, I noticed we took at least two hours a week on a manual report that seemed to be a big waste of time. I started playing around in our system on the different reporting features and was able to test and customize a report that could take the place of the manual report. After my testing, I brought the idea to my boss, who made a few tweaks but was thrilled I had discovered a more efficient way to give customers the same information."

"Managing supply chain operations successfully depends on great relationships. A few years ago, I attended an electrical supplier conference in Texas and started what would be a great partnership with a wiring supplier for a new product we were launching the following year. The relationship started with a friendly conversation at a reception for the suppliers. We talked about the company I represented and the new product line. I was frank about our technical and pricing needs. After more discussion on what they could do for us, I invited the vendor to our manufacturing facility to meet our design and engineering team. We planned for a month down the road. During that meeting, I was the final person to meet with the team from the vendor, and we ended up signing a contract with them. They remain a top supplier for us with excellent pricing, delivery, and service."

The trusting relationship I built has also benefited me and my group of leaders several times when last-minute requests were handled with ease."

"During my senior design project, we have had to do a lot of microprocessor work that I wasn't prepared for by my undergraduate courses. So, my team and I created a partnership with a computer engineering professor who we had never met in order to learn a bit more about our materials and processes to complete our project. This relationship has really helped our project to progress, and has also allowed us to learn more about computer engineering."

In the medical device industry, many of our sales relationships are with large hospital organizations. In previous roles, how have you made connections with the right people in large hospital organizations?

"I have successfully worked in direct sales before. My first step is to look at the CRM platform to see who the contact is. I reach out, and if that isn't the right person or that person has left, I do a LinkedIn search to see if I can figure out who is in that role now. I use many reach-out methods, including phone calls, emails, LinkedIn messages, and even dropping by the facility. By covering all of my bases, I can usually find the right person and figure out how our products can add value to their patients."

We are driven by data our work and use data to create meaningful solutions for our customers. How have you effectively used data in your previous work?

"In the marketing world, my work has always involved analyzing data from marketing campaigns to determine what worked and what failed and use that information moving forward on projects. In my current role, we started a heavy campaign for social media marketing a few years back. We rolled out the campaign on many platforms and used analytics to measure clicks on our advertising and feedback surveys from new customers on where they heard of us. In the end, two social media platforms significantly outperformed the others, and we moved forward with those platforms."

"Last year, we implemented the Office 365 tools. There are more programs than I can imagine in that suite, so in my free time, I've been looking at as many as I can to see how we could incorporate these tools into our process. I am testing a scheduling app I found to save some of the back-and-forth with clients as we try to schedule conversations. It has saved me at least two hours a week, so I plan to roll it out to my team next month."

"When I started my current job eight years ago, I heard so much unfamiliar terminology during my orientation my first week. Right away, I started making a list. When I had time to ask people or look things up, I'd add them to the list until I knew what everything was. My list became pretty extensive, so the HR person who does onboarding asked me if she could give it to new hires from now on because it was so helpful. I think an approach like this would help me greatly at Philips Healthcare."

There have been countless times that I have been on a sales call where I've taught customers about my products or helped troubleshoot issues while I was onsite. I took it upon myself to be involved in weekly leadership meetings. During one of these meetings, I learned that work comp costs in our warehouse were becoming astronomical, and leaves of absence due to injury were leaving us short-staffed. In talking with leadership on the warehouse side of things, I learned that hardly any formal training had ever occurred regarding these things. I set a meeting up for our warehouse director for me to learn about their jobs and discuss what method would be best for developing the training. In the end, my attentiveness to the needs of leadership within my organization helped develop a great online training module for current staff that is also now used for all new hires in our warehouse."

"Staying informed of new changes in our field is necessary, as those who do not stay up to date will quickly get behind the time. Over the last eight years, I've been an active member of ASH and MDMA. If I see continuing ed credits that interest me, I register for them. I also take advantage of yearly conferences and love having the opportunity to network with other professionals, see other leading medical device manufacturers, and hear keynote speakers. If I'm fortunate enough to be hired here at Philips Healthcare, I will continue to prioritize staying informed of changes in our field."

Our games and tournaments are always on the weekends, so if weekend call or coverage is needed, I would give you my weekend tournament schedule if hired for the position."

"With my current company, I work on a team that includes a few people in government relations on the device I manage. I work with our engineers and scientists to prove and test all the claims we are making about our product. The government relations team has regular contact with FDA, but I support their work to make sure we have approval."

As a natural leader, I delegated to people based on their strengths and knowledge. I was the gatekeeper for the project, setting milestones and tracking our accomplishments. "I was selected to represent my department in a larger project team to implement a new CRM system. We met weekly, sometimes twice a week, for about 12 months. My role was to make sure our old CRM system data was converted into the new one and that it was organized in a useful way. I collaborated with IT and the project manager for the new system to make sure the data was useful and organized. When the new system launched, our old and rich data was there and useable so we could maintain relationships we our customers seamlessly. I loved getting to work closely with other departments to learn about their roles within the CRM. I saw myself as both a leader and a worker bee on this project, roles I can take on in any situation."
