Even if you're not expected to drive for the job, you will need to have some form of reliable transportation. If you take the bus or ride a bike, that works too! Merely share that you have the means to get to work consistently and on time.

Reliable transportation can be a personal vehicle, Uber, public transportation, carpool, motorcycle or bicycle, or walking. Focus on describing what form of reliable transportation you will use to get to work if hired.

"I take public transit and find it to be very reliable. I was late to work only once last year due to a snowstorm that stalled all of our employees' commutes - including those with personal vehicles. Rest assured, I am reliable and always come to work on time."

How do you handle a situation where your supervisor does not properly communicate information to you?

"Whenever I have had a supervisor who does not properly communicate with me, I try to learn their communication style and emulate it. Sometimes you must relate to others in their style to be understood."

You cannot force others to communicate with you in a way you would always prefer. Talk to the interviewer about a time you have handled a supervisor who does not interact with you in a way you like.

How you respond to this question gives the interviewer insight into your communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills. Focus on providing a detailed answer to how you approach your supervisor when information is unclear.

"I have had great supervisors in my previous positions; however, if faced with a communication challenge like this, I would ask the supervisor how I could improve communication between us. Rather than placing blame, I believe it's always more effective to ask for growth recommendations."

"I would try approaching my manager, explaining that I'm not clear about certain things, and seeing if there was a possibility they could explain the information to me again. If that doesn't help, I would find a way of bringing the issue to the attention of a superior manager in the most professional way."

Personality fit is important to us at Ocado. How would you describe your personality?

"I would describe my personality as approachable, light-hearted, and positive. I believe that, if asked, my colleagues and supervisor would say the same about me."

Personality and character are two very different things. The interviewer is looking for more information on your traits vs. your integrity. These examples could include buzzwords such as extroverted, energetic, and confident.

When describing your personality, try to match your personality with the keywords used in the job description. If the job listing says Ocado is looking for a cheerful, honest, and reliable individual, using those keywords will show the interviewer you have the personality traits they are looking for.

"I am confident, friendly, and a go-getter. I have been complimented by past managers for my friendly nature and work ethic. I work hard to achieve my goals while always providing excellent customer service. I look forward to the opportunity to bring these traits to Ocado."

What type of work environment do you dislike working in?

"I can be productive in most work environments, so long as the mentality is positive and teamwork is encouraged. I cannot work in an environment that feels negative or toxic."

The interviewer wants to see if you are flexible in your ability to work in most environments. Tell them when you have experienced a position where the atmosphere wasn't conducive to your productivity, and describe which environment you thrive in. If possible, it is best to know what type of work environment Ocado offers before your interview.

Most people dislike working in an environment that is toxic, hostile, or unsupportive of its employees. If you answer with any of these suggestions, the interviewer will be able to relate with you.

"I do best in a supportive environment with room to grow, the ability to ask questions, and healthy co-worker relationships."

"I honestly think that I'm capable of adjusting to all sorts of working environments. I have worked in many different environments before, and I can't recall disliking any of them."

We need reliable people on our team at Ocado. How many days were you absent from work last year?

"I had zero unexcused absences last year. I took 12 vacation days out of my 15 allotted days. I was sick just 2, and a note from my Doctor accompanied those. Once I was late due to a terrible snow storm, and I contacted my supervisor to let them know why I was running late. I always try to be at least 10 minutes early for my shift."

A part of being a diligent employee is ensuring you are always on time and present when expected. It's great to be 10 minutes early rather than just showing up on the dot. Talk to the interviewer about your attendance in the past year and why you missed any days.

Focus on giving the exact number of days you missed work and why. If the interviewer deems your absence from work an excused and unavoidable reason to miss work, it will likely not be an issue. If you have many unexcused absences, they may disqualify you as a viable candidate.

"I am very committed to my employer and am only absent in events of sickness or the odd family emergency. I do my best always to be available and present when expected. Last year, I was absent two days after having my wisdom teeth removed. I had a note from my doctor and scheduled the time off with my supervisor before my surgery."

Describe to me your ideal employer.

"My ideal employer is one that brings charisma and passion to their work. I work best with organizations who have a penchant for learning and promote their employees based on performance."

A job search isn't just a one-sided hunt. You must also feel as though this is a good fit for you. Tell the interviewer about your ideal employer. Be specific, and be sure to keep the conversation positive. Avoid speaking poorly of any previous managers or organizations.

There is no right or wrong answer to this question. However, if you describe your ideal employer as the opposite of what Ocado can offer you, the interviewer may feel that you will not be a good fit for the company culture. Every employer should know how each staff member is best motivated. Talk to the interviewer about the various ways you find motivation on the job.

If you are the type of person that is self-motivated and does not require constant feedback or recognition, explain that to the interviewer. Companies love to hire self-motivated employees who do not need much coddling.

What are your salary expectations?

"Currently, I earn a base salary of $45,000 per year plus a potential 20% annual bonus. Last year my earnings were $52,000, and I would like to stay in the same range or slightly higher."

The best way to discuss your salary expectations is to use your current earnings as an example. Be open, and honest. Transparency is the best choice when salary based questions arise.

Most of Ocado's open roles do not have a salary range listed on the job announcement. Since no salary is listed, you will have to use your current earnings in your response. If you want to make more than what you currently earn, you can use a greater salary expectation in your response. However, you must be prepared to do some negotiating if the interviewer cannot offer what you are looking for.

"I am currently making $22/hour with two bonus opportunities. I am looking for compensation that is aligned with the role and provides an opportunity for growth."

How do you feel about performance incentives?

"I feel that performance incentives are a great idea. They keep employees motivated to do a great job and ensure they are on top of their KPIs. Most people are enthused about being rewarded for their successes."

Performance incentives can be very motivating. Talk to the interviewer about your feelings regarding performance incentives.

There is no correct answer to this question as it is your opinion on how you feel about performance incentives. However, answer in a positive tone rather than a negative one if you do not care for performance incentives.

"I do not require performance incentives to do a great job. However, small perks are always nice!"

What do you hope to learn from this job at Ocado?

"I am looking to lay the foundation for the rest of my career with this position. I looked at many job postings and interviewed some carefully selected places, but you are my front-runner. I want to learn the fundamentals of sales and become comfortable with both sides of the business. I appreciate that you want me to start with the basics of the inside sales before moving into outside sales."

"I have worked with many personalities and management styles with great success. If I could express a preference, I feel that I am best with a manager who allows me autonomy while still investing time in me through mentorship and training. Can you describe the management style here?"

The interviewer wants to see that you are self-aware and understand the type of manager or employer that brings out the best in you. Some individuals prefer a close working relationship with a lot of accountability, while others prefer space and autonomy. If you are unsure of the management style of the interviewing company, try to leave your answer as open as possible. You can certainly ask the interviewer to describe their management style.

When you describe what type of manager brings out the best in you, it shows the interviewer more about your personality and what traits you will bring to Ocado. Focus on the positive aspects of a manager that you enjoyed working for, and leave out any negative comments.

"I stay calm and composed when issues arise. My dad got rear-ended one time when driving me to school. I texted my friend to see if she could tell my teacher what had happened. I explained the situation to my teacher when I got to class. If this happened on my way to work, I would call ahead of time to ensure someone could cover my shift."

I always try to arrive 15 minutes early, but unforeseen circumstances can arise. I handle surprises using common sense and keeping courtesy to others top of mind."

"If something is out of my control, I will remain calm and start thinking of solutions. I would inform my managers so they can arrange a replacement in my absence. I would do my very best to think outside the box and make a situation like this as least disruptive as possible."

Focus on giving examples from your past. Many hiring managers choose one candidate over another because of their volunteer experience. They feel that it shows strong character and selflessness - all qualities that make a great employee. Talk to the interviewer about your willingness to give back to your community through volunteerism. If you do not have formal volunteer experience, you can draw on things you do in your spare time to assist friends, family, or even your current employer.

"I had a very healthy relationship with my previous employer. She was easy to approach, and we often bounced ideas off each other. I would sum it up as a relationship led by strong mutual respect."

The interviewer asks this question to see how you work with and speak of others. They want to know if you will be an easy person to work with or a challenge. When you answer this question, remain positive, even if the experience wasn't. Keep your answer short and respectful. Avoid discussing any previous drama, and do not speak poorly of your employer.

If you had a great relationship with your previous boss, explain what made it great. If you did not have a good relationship with your former boss, focus on saying, 'I have had healthier relationships in the past with previous employers, but we did the best we could. Our communication styles were very different, making it challenging at times.' Be sure to have a follow-up answer if the interviewer asks you to expand on what you have just said.

"I make a point of investing in coworker relationships. It's important to me that these relationships are established early on, especially with my boss. My current boss knows he can rely on me for anything in his absence, and my responsibilities have consistently increased to reflect that level of trust."

Describe a time when you had your ethics tested.

"I had my ethics tested while working at a retail store. I saw an employee put some items in her purse without paying for them and then leave on her break. I went to the break room to ask if she would like me to ring the items up, and she told me she didn't know what I was talking about and to mind my own business. I cannot tolerate people who lie and steal, so I told my supervisor about the incident. They replayed the surveillance cameras and saw I was telling the truth. After that, she was fired, and I received a promotion to Assistant Manager."

The interviewer asks this question to see that you are honest and have integrity. As an employee of Ocado, you may be asked to steal, share trade secrets, or do other unethical things. The interviewer wants to hear that you are ethical and can be trusted if hired.

Focus on providing an example of when you had your ethics tested working in retail. If you are new to this field, use an example from a previous job or while attending school. Some examples could be witnessing someone cheat or steal something.

"I had my ethics tested when working as a tax preparer. I had a client who asked me to falsify their tax return so they would get a larger refund. Why did you leave your last job?

"I left my last job because there was no room for professional growth or advancement. I want to work in a supervisory position, but that was not possible in my previous place of employment because of the company structure. I gave my two weeks' notice and left on good terms. I have an excellent letter of recommendation if you would like a copy for your records."

The interviewer wants to know why you left your last job to see if you were fired, gave notice, or were laid off. If you were fired, they want to know if you will admit why you were fired, if you take responsibility, and what you learned from the experience. If you gave notice, they want to understand what you did not like about your job to see if you would fit in with the company culture.

Focus on being direct and honest, and explain why you left your last place of employment. If you gave notice, were laid off, or fired, describe the circumstances behind your leaving. Be sure to end your response positively and tell the interviewer how excited you are to have the opportunity to interview for the position with their company.

"I was laid off from my last job because the company went out of business. I worked there for three years and have an excellent letter of recommendation from my previous supervisor. I have a copy of the letter if you would like it for your file."

"There are many aspects of the position I like. My favorite part of this position is creating displays. I love using my creativity to create beautiful merchandise displays and found that was my favorite part of my job at my previous position."

Most Ocado job postings have many job duties you will be asked to perform. The interviewer wants to know what you like the most to see where your strengths lie.

"I am fluent in British Sign Language as my mother is deaf. I also speak conversational German, but I would not consider myself fluent. I took two years of German in high school and have traveled extensively to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. I have always been able to understand the language and make myself understood, but I am interested in improving my skills."

The interviewer asks this question to determine if you have additional skills to benefit their company if hired. Ocado has many customers who speak foreign languages, and they want to see if you speak any fluently to serve their customers better.

Focus on describing any foreign languages you speak fluently. If you are not fluent in any other language, tell the interviewer of any classes you have taken and how you would rate your skills. For example, if you had two years of Spanish in high school and can speak a little conversational Spanish, explain that in your response. "Yes, I speak fluent Hindi as I was born and raised in India. My family became citizens of the UK after moving here when I was ten. I still speak Hindi daily with my family. I am also interested in learning Spanish and Italian as I have many friends who speak those languages."

Working in a retail environment, you will sometimes come across rude customers. How would you handle a customer who is aggressive towards you or a co-worker?

"If I had a customer who was being aggressive and disrespectful, I would calmly but firmly ask them if we could have a civil conversation as I am trying to help resolve the problem. If security needed to be called, I would do so. Everyone needs to remain respectful, and I would not hesitate to ask a customer to offer that respect in return."

Retail and customer service-based roles will often require diplomacy when it comes to working with the public. Discuss with the interviewer how you would handle an aggressive customer.

You want to show the interviewer that you have the demeanor and professionalism to handle rude customers. Generally, the customer will calm down and explain what the issue is. I will then do my best to resolve the problem without involving my supervisor. I will call my supervisor to assist if the customer is unhappy with my solution."

"I have a rule always to treat my customers how I would want treatment in a store or establishment. Customer service is vital to a company's success. I start by greeting my customers with a smile. I then introduce myself, ask how they are doing, and ask if they need help with anything. If I am busy with a task or assignment and they have a question, I will stop what I am doing to help."

Retail environments are competitive, and businesses can fail with one honest mistake. Discuss with the interviewer how you ensure that your customers receive the best service from you.

Instead of saying you offer exceptional customer service, provide examples of how you do so. Perhaps you remember customers' names and preferences, help them carry their purchases to their car, hold the door open, or greet them with a warm welcome. "Return policies are meant to be followed; however, there may be some exceptions allowed from time to time. I feel that having a satisfied customer is most important, and sometimes refusing a return is not worth the bad word of mouth or risk of negative online reviews. There is a fine balance between being accommodating and being a pushover. If unsure of the best decision, I would ask my supervisor for clarification."

As a retail employee, you will come across customers who want to argue with store policy. Assure the interviewer that you can handle a situation like this with poise while keeping the customer happy and the company's needs in mind.

Focus on researching Ocado's return policy before your interview. That way, you will clearly understand and can use it in your response if you wish. Then, ensure the interviewer that you will handle the customer's complaint in a calm, professional, and non-confrontational manner.

"I have some dispute resolution training from my previous retail position and fully believe that flexibility needs to be offered in extreme situations. While your 28-day return policy on non-perishable items is very generous, some customers may have a circumstance that did not allow them to return the product in that 28-day window."

We have a strong employee honesty program in place at Ocado to prevent loss. What would you do if you discovered that a co-worker was stealing products or money?

"My reaction to employee theft would differ if I were a retail associate or a retail manager. If I were a manager and caught an employee stealing, I would terminate them immediately. If I were an associate, I would report the incident according to company protocol. I would avoid approaching the employee as I would not want to make it a personal issue."

Loss prevention initiatives are incredibly important in the retail sector. Discuss with the interviewer how you would handle a situation surrounding employee theft. Be sure to avoid sounding self-righteous in your answer. Be diplomatic and refer to company protocol in these situations.

The interviewer wants to hear that you have integrity and morals. If you say that you would look the other way or condone your coworker's behavior, you will be passed over for another candidate.

"I value honesty, so I would tell my manager immediately if I saw a co-worker stealing. Do you have a process in place for reporting these types of situations?"

In this role you will be required to handle customer transactions. On a scale of 1-10 how strong are your mathematical skills?

"I did very well in math during High School and am comfortable with the math skills required for accepting cash, balancing a cash float, and performing inventory-related tasks. I would rate my mathematical skills at a 9, as there is always room for improvement with any skill."

Strong math skills are an asset in any retail-based role. Assure the interviewer that you are comfortable with the math associated with handling cash transactions and performing inventory counts.

To be considered for the position, you want to focus on rating your skills at an 8 or greater. If you rate your math skills less than 8, the interviewer may feel that your skills are not adequate enough for the job. However, you do not want to give yourself a 10, as there is always room for improvement.

"My math skills are strong, and I am confident that I can meet your expectations regarding accepting payment from customers. I received As in all of my math classes and would give myself an 8.5 rating as no one is perfect."

This position requires you to wear a uniform to work. Have you worn a uniform in the workplace before? How do you feel about this?

"I have worn a uniform for work at restaurant XYZ and when I was a retail manager for company ABC. I have seen the uniforms worn by the retail employees at Ocado Ltd. and see that it adds a strong level of professionalism."

Many retail-based organizations require their employees to wear a uniform. Talk to the interviewer about when you have been required to wear a uniform and your thoughts on this. Be sure to keep your answer positive and avoid speaking poorly of the practice surrounding uniforms.

If you want to be considered for the position, you must tell the interviewer that you do not have an issue wearing a uniform. Most retail positions require a wide range of hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and split shifts. Assure the interviewer that you can commit to a wide range of hours. If there is anything in your schedule that may hinder your availability, be sure to address this.

Honesty is essential when working in a retail environment based on many cash transactions. Assure the interviewer that you can be trusted by speaking about your character. Draw on the opinion of others to solidify your answer.

The interviewer will most likely call your previous employer for a reference. Be honest in your response. If you know your previous employer will say that you are honest and trustworthy, say as much. "I used to work as an assistant photo manager for a cruise line. The photo department generates the highest revenue for the company, therefore the pressure is always on.I enjoy working in high pressure, challenging situations."

"Last week, my manager had not completed the schedule for the following week. Some staff complained that they didn't have their work schedule yet. Rather than going to my manager with the complaint, I offered to take on some of her workload so she would have the time to complete the schedule. We worked together for a couple of overtime hours that day and were able to catch her up on everything. It felt good to help but also benefited me by getting the schedule completed."

The interviewer asks this question to determine if you are self-motivated and do more than the bare minimum. Display to the interviewer that you can do more than the bare minimum without being asked. Show that you can react appropriately when your employer has a need beyond your usual day-to-day expectations.

"Just yesterday, I had a customer make a purchase, and I noticed that she was struggling with her bags. She had a stroller, a couple of kids, and a lot of bags to carry. I offered to help her out to her car, and she gratefully accepted. It felt excellent to go above the call of duty that day."

"I would always go above and beyond. I feel rewarded when a customer is satisfied and happy. Once, I spent my day off photographing a newlywed couple because some of their wedding photographs didn't turn out due to a mistake in the lab. They were very upset to begin with, but very very pleased at the end."

"I am very much an over-achiever and find that the best way for me to be recognized for a job well done is through words of kindness and recognition. I am easily encouraged, and my best reward is knowing that my hard work is noticed."

We all like recognition in some way for our accomplishments in the workplace. Share with the interviewer how you would want credit for your hard work. Some examples include gifts, financial perks, public recognition, kind words, or a promotion.

If you are the type of person who does not require recognition for a job well done, explain that to the interviewer. Let them know you are motivated by doing a good job and do not need public recognition. However, if you enjoy being recognized for your work, describe how you would like to be recognized.

"Last year, when I was managing our weekend shift, I noticed a pretty solid opportunity for us to save on overtime hours. I created a presentation and gave it to my manager, who took it to upper management. The changes were implemented, and I was very proud of my suggestion."

In addition to being able to handle change, the interviewer wants to see that you can recognize when change is required and be confident enough to present that to your organization. Talk to the interviewer about a time when you were able to suggest a change in the workplace.

Even if your suggestion was not implemented, the interviewer would still see that you are creative and outspoken enough to suggest a change in the workplace. However, if you suggested a change and it was implemented, that would be a better example to use in your response.

"The store where I currently work is a family-run shop where they operated based on trust and didn't have a loss prevention plan. We were having some problems with theft because of it. I suggested we install a couple of cameras inside the store to deter anyone from stealing. So far, we have seen a 56% decline in the overall loss."

"As part of an events coordinating team, I had to think on my feet and had to come up with short or long term solutions to problems all the time.The biggest issue we kept having time and time again was the huge cues for photographs due to the popularity of the photo set built. In the short term, we tried to reduce the time choreography and prop handling took, but the biggest change was when I introduced the ticketed time slots. It provided us with a steady flow and guests weren't impatient or upset spending precious time waiting in cues at an event."

What is the most competitive work situation you have experienced? How did you handle it? What was the result?

"My current sales position is highly commission-based, so my colleagues and I are quite competitive. Despite being competitive, we have a great work environment where we help each other when someone is struggling to meet their quota. We coach each other on sales techniques and share success stories. The result has been a positive work environment with healthy competition."

This question is designed to determine if you can function well in a competitive environment. Think back to a time when you were racing others to achieve the highest sales, were working towards a promotion, or eagerly trying to win a new contract. Show the interviewer that you rose to the challenge and that you were excited to push yourself to be the best. It is a definite plus if you have cheered on your competitors and helped them along the way. Finally, be sure to mention any successful outcome.

The interviewer wants to see that you can handle competition gracefully and that you are a good sport. You do not want to say anything that makes the interviewer think you get upset when you lose at something and that you cheer on your competitors.

"Last year, I worked at a high-end jewelry store where sales goals were intense, and the rewards were high. I am geared for healthy competition, so when we had contests, it greatly motivated me. I ended up winning 7 of the 12 contests! I won an iPad, cash incentives, and concert tickets. It was great."
