3. Personality fit is important to us at Ocado. How would you describe your personality?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question

5. We need reliable people on our team at Ocado. How many days were you absent from work last year?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
A part of being a diligent employee is ensuring you are always on time and present when expected. It's great to be 10 minutes early rather than just showing up on the dot. Talk to the interviewer about your attendance in the past year and why you missed any days.
Written by Krista Wenz on September 10th, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
Focus on giving the exact number of days you missed work and why. If the interviewer deems your absence from work an excused and unavoidable reason to miss work, it will likely not be an issue. If you have many unexcused absences, they may disqualify you as a viable candidate.
Written by Krista Wenz on September 10th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"I had zero unexcused absences last year. I took 12 vacation days out of my 15 allotted days. I was sick just 2, and a note from my Doctor accompanied those. Once I was late due to a terrible snow storm, and I contacted my supervisor to let them know why I was running late. I always try to be at least 10 minutes early for my shift."
Written by Krista Wenz on September 10th, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"I am very committed to my employer and am only absent in events of sickness or the odd family emergency. I do my best always to be available and present when expected. Written by Krista Wenz on September 10th, 2022
Focus Your Answer On

8. What are your salary expectations?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The best way to discuss your salary expectations is to use your current earnings as an example. Be open, and honest. Transparency is the best choice when salary based questions arise.
Focus Your Answer On
Most of Ocado's open roles do not have a salary range listed on the job announcement. Since no salary is listed, you will have to use your current earnings in your response. If you want to make more than what you currently earn, you can use a greater salary expectation in your response. However, you must be prepared to do some negotiating if the interviewer cannot offer what you are looking for.
Written by Krista Wenz on September 10th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"Currently, I earn a base salary of $45,000 per year plus a potential 20% annual bonus. Last year my earnings were $52,000, and I would like to stay in the same range or slightly higher."
2nd Answer Example
"I am currently making $22/hour with two bonus opportunities. I am looking for compensation that is aligned with the role and provides an opportunity for growth."

12. How do you handle situations that could cause you to be late or miss work?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Proper planning will get you far, but sometimes life happens, and you'll need a plan B. Think about some of the variables in your life that could affect your ability to arrive on time for work. Sick children, traffic, car breakdowns... the list goes on. It may not be possible for everything to work out smoothly, such as getting your shift covered or making it to work on time. Your interviewer is looking to see that you are proactive and that you can handle the stress of unexpected situations that can arise.
Written by Krista Wenz on September 10th, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
The interviewer wants to gain insight into your critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills. In addition to describing how you handle situations that could cause you to be late or miss work, they also want to hear that you notify a supervisor or manager as soon as possible.
Written by Krista Wenz on September 10th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"I stay calm and composed when issues arise. My dad got rear-ended one time when driving me to school. I texted my friend to see if she could tell my teacher what had happened. I explained the situation to my teacher when I got to class. If this happened on my way to work, I would call ahead of time to ensure someone could cover my shift."
Written by Krista Wenz on September 10th, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"I hope never to be late! When I started working at a restaurant at sixteen, we were taught the adage 'if you're on time, you're late,' so I've worked to implement that into my life. Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The interviewer wants to ensure that all your questions about the company or job role are answered during the interview. It is best to ask at least a question or two, showing the interviewer your eagerness to learn all you can. Of course, you want to review the job announcement and research Ocado beforehand so you are not asking questions that could be found during your research.
Written by Krista Wenz on September 10th, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
Focus on asking questions specific to the role you are interviewing for or the company culture and work environment. Examples of good questions are asking the interviewer how you performed in the interview or if you need to clarify anything, asking what the interviewer likes most about working for Ocado, or if they have any hesitancy about hiring you. Written by Krista Wenz on September 10th, 2022
1st Answer Example

Written by Krista Wenz on September 10th, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
Focus on giving examples from your past. Written by Krista Wenz on September 10th, 2022
15. Tell me about an organization or group you have contributed to outside of work.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Many hiring managers choose one candidate over another because of their volunteer experience. They feel that it shows strong character and selflessness - all qualities that make a great employee. Talk to the interviewer about your willingness to give back to your community through volunteerism. If you do not have formal volunteer experience, you can draw on things you do in your spare time to assist friends, family, or even your current employer.

Written by Krista Wenz on September 10th, 2022

1st Answer Example
"I have a rule always to treat my customers how I would want treatment in a store or establishment. Customer service is vital to a company's success. I start by greeting my customers with a smile. Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
As a retail employee, you will come across customers who want to argue with store policy. Assure the interviewer that you can handle a situation like this with poise while keeping the customer happy and the company's needs in mind.
Written by Krista Wenz on September 10th, 2022

Focus on researching Ocado's return policy before your interview. That way, you will clearly understand and can use it in your response if you wish. Then, ensure the interviewer that you will handle the customer's complaint in a calm, professional, and non-confrontational manner.
Written by Krista Wenz on September 10th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"Return policies are meant to be followed; however, there may be some exceptions allowed from time to time. I feel that having a satisfied customer is most important, and sometimes refusing a return is not worth the bad word of mouth or risk of negative online reviews. There is a fine balance between being accommodating and being a pushover. If unsure of the best decision, I would ask my supervisor for clarification."
Written by Krista Wenz on September 10th, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"I have some dispute resolution training from my previous retail position and fully believe that flexibility needs to be offered in extreme situations. While your 28-day return policy on non-perishable items is very generous, some customers may have a circumstance that did not allow them to return the product in that 28-day window."
