"I believe that the most important KPI for an advertising client is the Conversion Rate. The entire reason we launch effective advertising campaigns is to gain a larger customer base. Other KPIs are significant; however, I believe the Conversion Rate to be the most important one."

Advertising clients look at a multitude of KPIs when they invest in advertising efforts. When it comes to digital, some crucial factors are: - Click-Through Rates (CTR) - Cost Per Action (CPA) - Conversion Rate - Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC)...and many more! Then, when it comes to print or traditional advertising, the KPIs change slightly, and there is more focus placed on things like response rates. Discuss with the interviewer what you believe to be the most important KPIs for an advertising client.

"In my opinion, sales revenue it the true indicator of an advertising campaigns efficacy. Every advertising client should be able to know and understand if their inbound marketing campaign has brought them more business."

Think of a time you had to gather information from multiple sources. How did you determine which data was relevant and reliable?

"I believe that a credible source is one that is unbiased and can be backed by facts. It's also important to ensure that the source is current and relevant to the intended audience. These are the factors that I always check into to ensure the information I receive is relevant and reliable."

As a broadcast, news, or live programming professional, you are aware of the fact that there are many unreliable and irrelevant sources of information out there. Walk the interviewer through the steps you take to ensure that the sources you work with are credible.

"Relevant and reliable information and data are what sets trusted programming apart from the untrustworthy. When I need to gather information from multiple, or even new sources, I do a lot of digging to make sure that everything said can be backed by true and current facts. During my internship, I performed a lot of work related to fact-checking and ensuring our sources were credible. I look forward to bringing what I learned during those weeks, to NBCUniversal."

What are your top two most effective social media advertising methods?

"At the moment, I have found that video sharing and influencer marketing have been the most effective social media advertising methods for my clients. I have learned a great deal about video ads this year. The customer engagement and conversion numbers with video are incredible."

There are many effective social media advertising methods, including micro-blogging, influencer marketing, photo sharing, and video sharing. Discuss with the interviewer which two social media advertising efforts have been most effective for you, as of late.

"Right now, the two most effective social media advertising methods have been IGTV, where I have created multiple advertorials and webinars that act as a lead generator to product specific landing pages. Also, I have learned how to harness the power of Twitter, which has been an incredible traffic booster for my clients' websites."

Market research is essential to NBCUniversal to help us understand where to take our business in the years to come. Rate your research skills from 1-10. Do you enjoy conducting research?

"One of the reasons why I would love to work for NBCUniversal is because of your solid reputation for reputable sources and research. In my previous positions, I have always earned recognition for my great research skills. When you call my references, they will attest to this as well. There is always room for improvement, so for that reason, I would rate myself as an 8.5 out of 10 for research capabilities."

In the media and publishing industry, research and reliable sources are everything. Assure the interviewer that you are capable of conducting robust and dependable research. Draw on your positive references when answering this question.

"When it comes to research capabilities, I am most definitely a 10/10. An eleven even, if that is allowed! I love researching a large range of products and am very data and analytically minded."

Name for me one effective method for driving audience engagement in the television industry.

"If given the opportunity to drive audience engagement for NBCUniversal, the first place I would look is where your target audience spends their most time, which I believe to be social media. I would create a unique hashtag along with a contest for free tickets to a release party or another coveted prize. I would use the opportunity to create a conversation around NBCUniversal latest television show or another exciting release."

The interviewer wants to see that you readily have insight when it comes to audience engagement in the television industry. NBCUniversal is all about leveraging multiple channels to drive engagement. Discuss one approach you would take for increasing audience engagement if you were the successful candidate.

"I believe in a multi-channel approach, so I would begin by collaborating with NBCUniversal social media and digital departments to make engaging 15-second videos, like a series of teasers, for publishing on IGTV, YouTube, and other social networking sites where video content is king."

Walk me through your experience with department management, studio clients and vendors.

"In my current role, I will collaborate with a variety of groups every single day. One day I may be working with the social media creatives and the human resources department, while also juggling multiple talent agents. The next day, I could be collaborating with a whole other group. I enjoy the challenge and the variety of communication that comes with working in this type of environment."

The purpose of this question is to uncover whether you are experienced with cross-collaboration when it comes to other internal departments, clients, and vendors which NBCUniversal would rely upon. Talk about the groups and people that you collaborate with regularly, in your current role.

"As a recent graduate, my experience working in cross-collaborative environments is limited to my educational experience. While attending university, I worked with people of all personality types, needs, and approaches to work. I can pivot when needed, and can work with a variety of groups such as multiple NBCUniversal departments, clients, and vendors."

Do you have any direct experience working with talent?

"In my current role, I recently took on the responsibility of assisting with the management and scheduling of talent on a couple of films. I felt that the experience was very eye-opening and allowed me to expand my knowledge and understanding of the film industry even further. Does this particular role with NBCUniversal have talent-facing opportunities?"

A significant part of working on the film side of the business for NBCUniversal may mean working directly with talent, and their agents. The interviewer would like to see that you have the ability to maintain professional relationships with everyone you work with, no matter their status. If you have direct experience working with talent, walk the interviewer through your responsibilities on the talent side. If you do not have direct experience working with talent, assure the interviewer that you are capable of maintaining professional work relationships across the board.

"Although working directly with talent would be a responsibility new to me, it is one that I would eagerly take on. Utilizing my communications and customer service experience, I would be an excellent representative of NBCUniversal when working with any talent or their agents."

At NBCUniversal you will be handling multiple projects at a time. When have you nearly missed a production timeline due to disorganization?

"I handle dozens of deliverables in a day, making it a challenge to stay on top of it all. I nearly missed an important deadline because I delegated a few tasks to my assistant without checking in regularly. Since this incident, I have set up my work in a cloud-based task management system which my assistant and I share. I set up clear milestones, attached to dates and times; ensuring that we are on the same page all the times."

Production deadlines are incredibly important. One missed deadline can throw a thousand deliverables out of balance, costing a studio or production company countless dollars. Talk to the interviewer about a time when you nearly missed a production deadline. Discuss how you caught the potential disaster, and pivoted to make sure that you met the timeline in the end. Be sure to mention what you learned in the process!

"Tight deadlines are normal in the media industry, and I make a point of delivering early on everything as often as possible. Last month, I had a production deadline that offered half the working time as usual. I took my work home every night for a week to ensure that we met the deadline without the quality of work suffering; however, it just wasn't enough. At the eleventh hour, I called in reinforcements. It is sometimes hard for me to ask for help, but I know to set my ego aside for the good of the project."

If you could pitch an idea for a news segment today, what would it be?

"I love to pitch show ideas, and I have a running document with ideas that come to me throughout the day. I am working on smoothing a few of them out right now. One of these ideas is a show on emerging female athletes in our region. I believe there are so many talented girls out there who could use an extra boost of funding and community support. If you're interested, I would be happy to flesh that idea out further and formally pitch it once I begin working for NBCUniversal."

The interviewer would like to get to know you apart from your resume. Since there are multiple areas of interest when it comes to the news (current events, sports, politics, etc.), NBCUniversal wants to uncover what sparks and motivates you the most. "I would love to gain more experience when it comes to pitching news segments. I am very dedicated when it comes to political topics and reporting. I would pitch a news segment giving viewers an insiders' look at how campaigns are built and won. I find this topic fascinating, and am sure your audience would as well."

How is social media changing the way people consume news, today? What can NBCUniversal do to remain relevant?

"I believe that social media has changed the way people consume news today in both positive and harmful ways. We do have a lot more 'fake news' going on today, being spread rapidly due to the ease of social sharing. With that said, social media is now the primary source of news online, giving broadcasters a unique opportunity to put out omnichannel content, furthering their reach. From what I see, NBCUniversal is doing an excellent job in remaining relevant. My only suggestion would be to increase the content on Instagram's IGTV, which is relatively new but very relevant."

With 'fake news' running rampant, we are quick to blame online content and social media platforms for the misinformation. Today, people read an article or a post, share it, it goes viral, and before you know it, millions of people are misinformed about an important topic. However, it isn't all bad! Social platforms allow people, who may otherwise not take the time to sit down and watch a network news program, to stay in-the-know. Talk to the interviewer about what NBCUniversal can do to embrace this movement. Be sure to compliment them on the efforts they already have in place.

"Social media is broadening the conversation to include people who would otherwise not take the time to be involved in current events. Take political campaigns these days, and how many more people are going out to vote or even becoming involved in social movements such as #metoo. I follow NBCUniversal closely on multiple channels and think you are doing an excellent job in remaining relevant and staying in the conversation. Creating viral hashtags is another valuable effort that I can help NBCUniversal with, should I be the successful candidate."

Have you ever had to pitch an idea? If so, how was your presentation received?

"I have pitched ideas numerous times in my career; whether it be for television show ideas, digital marketing methods, or social media campaigns. I believe that part of what makes me so valuable to my employer is my ability to jump into any meeting with confidence and present my ideas with enthusiasm."

If you are new to your career in television, the idea of pitching may make you feel weak in the knees. If you have the experience, you may still feel the nerves but are calmed by the knowledge that you have nailed the formula of a compelling presentation. Wherever you are in your career, the interviewer would like to know if you will enter this role, ready to pitch excellent ideas to clients of NBCUniversal or even to internal departments. "I am newer to my career; however, I gained a lot of experience in presenting and delivering pitches while attending post-secondary education. What I learned in University is that with some research, robust data, and a dash of creativity, I can pitch anything, as long as I have the right framework in place. I recently completed a course by Oren Klaff on Pitch Mastery, which I believe will benefit NBCUniversal greatly when it comes to my future involvement in pitch meetings."

What experience do you have working on live broadcasts for public entertainment?

"I have twelve years of experience working on live broadcasts, beginning with my local cable news network, and then into a global news operation. I have seen many changes occur over the years with the introduction of live streaming, and the challenges that come with it, including audience targeting, audience building, and the ever-increasing need for engaging content. I am confident that my broad range of experiences will be beneficial to the team at NBCUniversal."

Today, live broadcasts can include cable news, shows for entertainment, live streaming for apps like IGTV and Parascope, or even podcasts. Walk the interviewer through your experience working on real-time broadcasts. Discuss some of the challenges that come with live broadcasting, and how you can readily overcome these challenges because of your knowledge and expertise.

"I recently graduated with my degree in Broadcasting and had the opportunity to complete my internship with Cable News XYZ. During this 12 week internship, I learned a great deal about writing fundamentals for live media, talent management, and the basics of field reporting. Being so hands on, I was able to learn a fair amount regarding the challenges that live broadcasts face, and how to overcome them."

The news runs 24/7. How do you feel about an overnight shift, working on weekends, and holidays?

"In my current role, I worked the overnight shift for eight years. Through my tenure and solid news programming work, I earned a seat in the daytime news operation. This shift is my preference for any roles moving forward. With that said, I have no issue working overtime or jumping into the odd overnight shift to help out my team."

It is vital to NBCUniversal that you offer flexibility in your schedule. Since the news never stops, neither will NBCUniversal and their news reporting efforts. Discuss your calendar with the interviewer, highlighting any limitations that you may have. Be as flexible as possible, showing that you are a team player.

"Being new to my career in news programming, I fully understand that I should take the types of roles offered to me at this time. If NBCUniversal has overnight shifts with some overtime, weekends, and holidays then count me in. I am looking forward to carving out a career with NBCUniversal and have no issue starting where I am needed."

In your opinion, what is the most influential form of media today?

"I feel that the most influential form of media today is social media and online content. As a whole, the human race wants fast, easy to consume, entertainment news. Our rate of consumption is unprecedented, and the fastest way to access it is through online content sharing."

NBCUniversal is one of the most influential content providers of our time. Have a meaningful conversation with the interviewer on media influence. With so many forms of media out there, which do you feel is the most influential at the moment? Be sure to back your answer.

"There are many important forms of media today - so many, in fact, that people seem to be getting overwhelmed. I would still say that traditional media, in the form of television and the daily news, is at the top when it comes to the number of people influenced and the quality of the content distributed."

Has a brand ever built an emotional connection with you using marketing? If so, tell me how they accomplished this connection.

"The most memorable emotional connection that I have experienced from a marketing effort would be between Coca-Cola and the Olympics. It was fascinating to learn that Coca-Cola was the first commercial sponsor of the Olympic Games in 1928. Today, there aren't many people who can keep a dry eye when watching the emotionally driven Olympics commercials; myself included. This strong connection builds through the idea of longstanding relationships, pride in country, and community connection. The Olympic Games resonate globally, which makes this partnership especially impactful."

The interviewer wants to know if any corporate marketing efforts have resonated with you in the past. It's essential that you discuss any marketing efforts that have stuck with you, and be prepared to talk about what you believe was done right, to make this connection happen. The example that you mention does not have to be a marketing effort led by NBCUniversal but bonus points if you mention their past work!

"Budweiser's Superbowl ad from 2013 called 'Brotherhood' is one that impacted me so much that I still think about it all of these years later. As an animal lover and sports enthusiast, this ad about the connection between a man and his horse was heartfelt and easy to connect with."

What methods do you use, to work within a brand's voice consistently?

"One tool that my current employer uses, and I find to be very helpful, is our internal Style Guide. This style guide is a tool for writers, producers, and creatives of all kinds, to refer to when they are unsure if their idea is on-track with the company's brand. Another method that I refer to often is to first storyboard the 'voice' that I want before beginning a project. I can create a clear narrative around the marketing effort very early on in the project."

When working on digital content, you will be asked to remain in line with the NBCUniversal brand. The interviewer would like to know how you ensure that you maintain a brand's voice, consistently delivering it across multiple platforms or channels. Discuss your best methods for preserving the brand voice, and be sure to express that you understand the importance of this skill.

"I fully understand how critical it is to work within a brand's voice consistently throughout a project. One method that I enjoy using is to create a guide that outlines the jargon or colloquialisms that are acceptable to use in the campaign. Somewhat like a style guide, but easier to refer back to. I also feel it's important to make the voice of a brand a company-wide initiative so that co-workers can check in with each other to ensure all work is consistent and the best it can be."

What are the most important components to a successful live production?

"I believe that the key to a successful live production is to know your audience, know your topic, and know your limitations. It's when a production tries to deliver too much, too fast, things fall apart. It's vital that before beginning, you have an idea of who you are targeting with your content, and sticking to that viewer profile all the way through. Do not stray, and face the fall of delivering a confusing or off-brand message."

Live productions can get anyone's blood flowing, and heart racing, as there is very little room for error. The interviewer would like to know that you understand everything that goes into a successful live show; whether it be for cable news, live streaming, a live podcast, or even a television show with a live audience. Discuss what you know about the keys to a successful live show.

"Planning every detail is one of the most important components of a successful live production. Also, I believe that last minute changes can railroad a lot of things, so it's important to avoid those as well. There is little room for error so, having a solid plan in place, is everything!"

How do you establish relationships with the creative community in our area?

"I have been an active member of the Creative Film Society for the past four years. I try to attend as many gatherings and events as possible. I have met many excellent connections through this group, and will continue to be a member for years to come."

This question is meant to dig a bit, to find out about your networking capabilities as well as how deep your passion goes for the film industry. The interviewer would like to see if you spend your time getting to know the film community and other creatives in your network. Discuss what you do, outside of work obligations, to get to know your industry peers.

"For the past couple of years, I have taken the time to volunteer at many independent film events and film festivals. I was the President of my university's New Filmmakers Initiative, a group of aspiring film creatives who worked together to open doors for new opportunities in the industry. It's essential to me that I am part of something bigger than I am. This way, I continue to learn and grow through the knowledge of others who are more experience in the world of film."

In your opinion, how are promotional messages best delivered on social media?

"My favorite method of delivering brand and promo messages right now would be influencer marketing. I prefer making connections with micro-influencers who get real, highly-targeted engagement. I believe micro-influencers are an excellent way for many brands to affordably get their name out there while ensuring their message is not lost in the crowd."

What are your thoughts when it comes to excellent delivery of promotions, on social media? A lot of social media efforts are free; however, this low cost means that there are so many ways to approach these platforms. Therefore, it's easy to muddle your message. Discuss with the interviewer, the types of promotional messages that are working best for you right now.

"The best promotional messages are delivered using crisp, professional video. I am a huge proponent of video promotions because they uphold the purpose of ads, yet - are delivered in a way that social media users feel it belongs naturally in their feed."

What is the key to success when creating programs that communicate with the public?

"The right form of communication is vital to any successful broadcast or production. I believe that the most important factors include actively polling and listening to your viewers, having a clear vision when it comes to tone, and also garnering strong community. When the public feels they are a part of something important, and that you are speaking their language, they are much more likely to engage with your programming."

When you are working on content meant for public consumption, it's vital that you keep in mind the ways that you will deliver the material, the tone you want to convey in your messaging, and who you wish to reach. Talk to the interviewer about what you believe to be the key to success when creating programs that need clear communication to the public.

"The absolute key to success, in my opinion, is to create community buy-in. When the public is engaged, the people will tell you what they want to see more of, allowing you to better communicate with them from the start. I believe in listening, comprehending, retaining core ideas, clearly sharing your own, and responding constructively."

Do you have a well-established network of contacts in the television industry? If so, how did you go about building this network?

"I have been in the media industry for eight years now and make a point to attend at least a couple of industry events every month. It's my nature to open up a conversation with people new to me, as I am curious about their career path and their connections. The first gig I ever landed in the industry was through networking, so I am a big believer in the impact of building a robust network."

I build my network by nurturing relationships through trust, connecting regularly, and staying involved in events throughout the year."

Walk me through your experience in the television and/or broadcast industry.

"I began my career in media in a volunteer role with my local television station. From there, I started to assist with writing broadcast scripts. I left that role to attend university and recently graduated with my communications degree. I am now looking for my first opportunity in media, and very much look forward to seeing my career grow with NBCUniversal."

Tell me about your experience collaborating with marketing, sales, and production teams.

"In my current role we have a staff of 450 people within ten departments. Any given week, I will collaborate with marketing, sales, and social media departments. These are the departments with which I collaborate most often. I believe that everyone has a great deal of value to offer, so, for that reason, I embrace every opportunity to collaborate cross-departmentally."

The hiring authority is looking for details on your experience when it comes to cross-departmental collaboration. In the media industry, it takes many passes through many hands to complete a project so, it's essential to NBCUniversal that you can work well with other people through a variety of departments. Give an example of how you collaborate with a diverse team in your current role.

"I look forward to getting to know your marketing, sales, and production teams here at NBCUniversal. Currently, in my internship, I have spent two weeks in each department, getting to know the ins and outs of online publishing, design, marketing, sales, and even public relations. The experience has been invaluable."

With which advertising vehicles are you most familiar: billboards, print, digital, broadcast, or other?

"The bulk of my career is with traditional print advertising including magazines and billboards. I have spent the past three years pivoting my career more towards digital ads; however. I look forward to bringing my years of experience to work for NBCUniversal, strengthening your reach in the print advertising, traditional media, and digital advertising sectors."

"To prevent total advertisement flops altogether, I lean on A/B testing. I believe many answers can come to the surface when you take the time to test a few ideas and then measure the performance of each ad against each other. I rely heavily on data, but also make sure to compare the results of different channels, as one campaign may work very well on social where another will not."

"In my current role, I have pre-determined benchmarks for KPIs such as click-through rates and quality of acquired leads. Looking at the data surrounding these targets will help me to understand better if an advertisement is a win or a loss. When an ad appears to be a flop, our team will pull it right away and give a further push to the one that is performing up to expectations."

NBCUniversal strives to be first in all we do. How do you stay ahead in the latest television trends?

"It's vital that I remain on trend, and even ahead of the curve when it comes to what's happening in television. To remain ahead of trends, I set up Google alerts with particular keywords. This set up allows me to read articles in real-time, allowing me to research new happenings very quickly and efficiently."

In the media and entertainment industry, it's imperative that you remain up to date on trends. Being up to date means not only knowing what's happening 'in the now' but also what's coming down the pipe. Talk to the interviewer about how you remain ahead of the latest trends in the industry. Examples could include helpful blogs, podcasts, industry events, or continuing education opportunities. Be sure to express the fact that staying on trend is very important to you.

"I am very involved in a few television industry associations, allowing me to keep my network healthy. This robust network means that I will often hear about happenings before they become official public news. I also rely on continued education, whether it be workshops offered by my employer, independent industry events, and online courses."

Have you ever managed or helped with a content budget? If so, what type of budgets are you accustomed to working with?

"Most of the budgets that I have worked within spread amongst a variety of digital production and creative costs. I have worked on budgets as small as $5,000 and as large as $15M. No matter the size of the budget, it's incredibly important that I treat every dollar as though it's my own; being wisely allocated and accounted for."

Before your interview, take some time to gather data related to the budgets you have worked with, and the times when you have come in under budget. "Although my experience does not yet include budget management, I have made recommendations on cost savings when it comes to content writing, video production, and talent acquisition. I feel that with the right training, and some more work experience, I will be ready to assist with content budgeting in no time."

How do you think that online media has changed traditional print and broadcast media approaches in the past 10 years?

"Online media has changed the way we digest information. Most people look for content online because it's fast and we can read the opinions of others which helps us to form our own. This content is both convenient and dangerous at times as it doesn't necessarily promote free thought. I think that traditional print media has become lighter and more entertainment-driven because of this."

NBCUniversal has been around for long enough to have seen significant changes and movements in the media industry. This industry is ever-changing, and all types of media outlets have been scrambling to keep up since the introduction of online media. Talk to the interviewer about your insights when it comes to the changes you have witnessed in traditional media since the introduction of online media.

"I believe that online media has rapidly increased the amount of content that we feel we need in a day. Where it used to be that our parents would watch or read the local news once every morning or evening, we are now constantly logging in, and looking for updates on stories that may not even directly affect us. This response means that newspapers are often struggling with sales, and we have global 24/7 news channels."

What expertise do you bring in digital KPIs and analytics?

"In my current role, the numbers that I care about the most include our sentiment rates. I look at the number of comments and engagement. I like to see soaring numbers when it comes to social media shares or @ tags. Nothing feels as great as seeing your digital content go viral, and I look forward to achieving more of that in my career with NBCUniversal."
