"Everyone is emotional to a certain degree, and I consider myself kind-hearted and open. A healthcare career can sometimes be emotional; however, I focus on the positives. For instance - if we are close to losing a patient, I will focus on the positive memories rather than the illness. This mindset has consistently allowed me to continue with a productive shift no matter the emotions that come my way."

The interviewer wants to know if you consider yourself to be an emotionally driven person. Talk to the interviewer about your emotions and if they have ever affected your productivity at work. Remember that almost everyone is an emotional creature to some degree, but there are other ways to describe yourself that have a more positive connotation. "This is a great question. I think the right answer is, 'Of course, but not for long!' We've all had those tough cases. A child dies, a patient yells at you, or you must give someone a cancer diagnosis. It's professional to take a few minutes after an encounter like that and let those emotions come and go. I cope with these emotions by telling myself that it's not my story; it's the patient's story. I think it's okay to be moved by someone else's experience, but I don't need to make it mine."

"I would be lying if I said my emotions have never gotten in the way of my productivity, as I am human and we all have days where we feel "off". However, I pride myself on always showing up to work and leaving any personal or emotional baggage at the door when I enter. I strive to make the most of every work day by positively interacting with my co-workers and clients. If an issue arises where I feel frustrated, overwhelmed, or annoyed, and I feel that it is interfering with the quality of care I am providing, I take a minute to collect myself and meditate and then move on with my day."

Our clinics are very busy and fast-paced. How well do you work under pressure?

"I work very well under pressure. I always remain calm and professional when faced with stressful situations. I find the best thing to do when there is a lot of pressure at work is to stay organized. I create a list, prioritize the most urgent assignments, and delegate work where I can. If I stay focused and know exactly what needs to be done, work stressors do not affect me."

You must work well under pressure in whatever role you are interviewing for. Every workday will undoubtedly be stressful in a busy and fast-paced medical environment. Situations will come up that add stress to the work day, and you must be able to manage your stress for a successful outcome. The interviewer wants to hear that you work well under pressure and stay focused on the task at hand.

Focus on giving an example of working under pressure related to your role in the healthcare profession. You might have had a patient that went into cardiac arrest while you were assessing them or had a loved one come into the clinic who was injured while you were working. Using the STAR method is an excellent way to formulate your response to this question. STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, and Result. Briefly describe the situation, explain your role, the measures you took to solve the issues, and the outcome. The interviewer wants to hear that you can effectively work under pressure as a healthcare professional.

"I work very well under pressure. As a full-time student with a full load, I am constantly pressured to do my homework and complete multiple assignments. I also work part-time, so I have developed a system that prioritizes the most urgent assignments and tasks I need to complete to stay on track. I find that being organized and remaining focused on the task at hand keeps stress from taking over, which allows me to stay calm while working under pressure."

MinuteClinic seeks to hire those with strong problem-solving skills. When were you able to successfully resolve a problem in the workplace?

"In my most recent position, we had a consistent problem with employees arriving late for their shifts or calling in sick at the very last moment. Rather than the typical documenting and reprimanding style that management usually takes, I decided to track the results using an accountability reward system. For 180 days, I rewarded my employees for coming to work 10 minutes early. I also added a bonus for every month with zero sick days. Ultimately, we awarded those with perfect attendance a $600 bonus. In the end, the bonus cost us less money than the cost of lowered productivity due to absent employees. The program was successful, and upper management chose to keep it implemented for another six months. We will re-assess in December, but it seems to work very well."

Problem-solving and dispute resolution are critical skills to possess. Display to the interviewer that you are capable of problem-solving within the workplace. Talk about a time you were creative, proactive, and displayed the leadership qualities required to resolve a workplace issue.

If you are new to the industry and do not have a workplace example, provide an example from school that shows your ability to resolve a problem. Working in the healthcare industry requires quick-thinking individuals who can stay calm and professional when problems arise.

"I worked in a clinic where the primary population was low income. We had a lot of concerns with patients not showing up for appointments when expected. The staff wanted to start double-booking patient time slots. Instead, I got permission to spend a day in a highly-rated clinic serving the same population. Instead of scheduling, they had these 'drop-in mornings' with a common waiting room. I took these methods and incorporated them into our setting. We did that twice weekly, which completely solved our scheduling problem."

Why did you leave your last job?

"I left my last job because there was no room for professional growth or advancement. I want to work in a supervisory position, but that was not possible in my previous place of employment because of the company structure. I gave my two weeks' notice and left on good terms. I have an excellent letter of recommendation if you would like a copy for your records."

The interviewer wants to know why you left your last job to see if you were fired, laid off, or gave notice. If you were fired, they want to know if you will admit the reason, if you take responsibility, and what you learned from the experience. If you gave notice, they want to understand what you did not like about your job to see if you would fit in with the company culture.

Focus on being direct and honest, and explain why you left your last place of employment. If you gave notice, were laid off, or fired, describe the circumstances behind your departure. Be sure to end your response positively and tell the interviewer how excited you are to have the opportunity to interview for the position with MinuteClinic.

"I was laid off from my last job because the clinic was losing money and had to restructure their staffing pool. I was one of the last people hired, so I was one of the first to be let go."

In order to work for MinuteClinic, we require a full background check and a drug screen. Will you have an issue passing either?

"I have a clean criminal record and do not use drugs, so I will not have an issue passing either."

Working in the healthcare industry means you are in contact with vulnerable people, children, pharmaceutical drugs, drug-related equipment, confidential information, and other areas of sensitivity. You must disclose if you have a criminal record or drug abuse issue. If you have neither, assure the interviewer that you are able and willing to pass a complete background check and drug test.

As with any interview question, you want to focus on being completely honest in your response. As embarrassing as it may be, if you do not think you will pass the drug test or have a criminal background, you need to inform the interviewer now. If passing the drug test will not be an issue and you do not have a criminal history, assure the interviewer that you will have no problem passing both tests.

"No problem. I understand that it's part of the job. But I want to be up-front, I have done a full background check before, and there is a possibility you will see a charge for possession of marijuana in the check. It was several years ago, and it's no longer an issue for me because I've made significant changes in my life to pursue this career. But I don't want you to be surprised by the information. I'm happy to answer any questions you have and can assure you my drug test would be negative as I do not use marijuana or other drugs."

MinuteClinic was initially looking for someone with five years of experience in a similar role. Considering you have just two years of experience, would you be willing to accept this position at a lower salary?

"I would be happy to earn my way to the top compensation level if required. I assure you that, despite my being shy of experience by a couple of years, I am a top performer, and you would not be disappointed in my performance if hired for the role."

The interviewer wants to hear if you are willing to earn your way up if they do not offer you top compensation. Discuss with the interviewer what you would expect for compensation if offered this position.

Considering your two years of experience, you need to be compensated for your time and training. While you may not have the five years of experience they are looking for, you still need to be paid commensurate with your experience. Let the interviewer know you are willing to work to the top, but you want to at least start with the median salary for the job.

MinuteClinic, Inc. offers a Start to Stop(R) smoking cessation program, which is designed to help clients successfully quit smoking on their own schedule. Do you have experience working with people addicted to nicotine or other substances?

"I truly feel for people who are trying to stop smoking. I hate to say it, but I started smoking when I was 16. Choosing to stop smoking was one thing, but quitting was one of the hardest things I've ever done. I commend anyone who chooses to stop smoking and get healthier."

Quitting smoking is very difficult for most people and often requires assistance such as patches or prescription medications to help with cravings. Any knowledge about nicotine use or cessation will help to educate patients on options.

If you have experience working with patients with addiction, describe your experience. If you do not have experience in this area, explain how you are unfamiliar with this but are excited to begin helping patients with their addiction.

"I worked in an addiction rehab facility a few years ago. Many clients told me that stopping smoking was just as hard as stopping illegal drug use. I have never smoked and am thankful I have never had to fight that addiction personally."

In an effort to advance the quality of the healthcare we provide, MinuteClinic has partnered with clinical affiliates, including leading hospitals, clinics, and physicians. Have you ever participated in marketing efforts to grow a business?

"I have never worked as a marketer, but I have worked in some clinics and the county hospital here in town. During that time, I built strong relationships with some of the supervisory staff in those facilities. I would love to be a part of helping to grow MinuteClinic, Inc's circle of affiliates if I am offered employment here."

MinuteClinic is always looking to advance the quality of health care provided to patients. One way they do that is by collaborating with medical systems in the communities they serve. If you have ever done any marketing, that could be a strength that MinuteClinic, Inc. could use once you are hired. Also, one does not have to 'officially' be a marketer to do a marketer's job. MinuteClinic offers vaccinations as well as routine injections, such as B12, when indicated. Have you ever given immunizations or worked in a Kidmed clinic?

"I do have experience in giving childhood vaccinations. I worked as a KidMed nurse for over two years."

While not all healthcare personnel is responsible for giving vaccinations, one of the services provided by MinuteClinic, Inc. is to give them. Share any experience or education you have. If you have any experience, that could be a plus when seeking employment.

KidMed clinics offer expert urgent care for pediatrics from newborn to 21. The interviewer asks if you have experience working in a KIdMed clinic as many vaccinations are given in the facilities.

"I used to work in a Family Care Clinic. We had a nurse who worked only with KidMed patients and gave immunizations. I assisted from time to time when there was an influx of patients."

One of the services provided by MinuteClinic, Inc. is DOT physicals. Have you ever assisted with or performed physicals for school or employment purposes?

"DOT physicals must be some of the most detailed physicals I have ever assisted with. I have assisted with physicals for different things, but DOT regulations check everything! One of my friends discovered he has diabetes due to initial blood results from a DOT physical."

Many professional drivers are required to get physicals regularly. MinuteClinic, Inc.'s certified practitioners make it easy for commercial drivers to fulfill Department of Transportation (DOT) regulatory requirements. DOT physicals must be carried out correctly as DOT standards are high. If you have any experience with these physicals, share it with the interviewer. Be sure to note something you are familiar with regarding a DOT physical that will show your knowledge.

As with any interview question, you should be honest. It won't cost you the position if you are unfamiliar with DOT physicals. The interviewer wants to see if you need training in this area or if you are comfortable doing DOT physicals.

"I have assisted with school, sports, and camp physicals, but never with a DOT physical. I am sure I will pick it up quickly once taught how to perform them."

"I don't have much experience with dermatological conditions, but I learn quickly and will be happy to take any required courses."

MinuteClinic, Inc. offers several services regarding the care of minor injuries or minor conditions. General knowledge of some of these conditions could be what the interviewer is looking for. Even if your experience is personal and not professional, sharing your expertise with the interviewer is still essential.

If you are familiar with minor skin conditions, describe your experience. If you are unfamiliar with working with dermatologic conditions, tell the interviewer that this is not your expertise, but you are excited and eager to learn all you can.

"Yes, I am familiar with a few skin conditions such as eczema, impetigo, and melanoma. My mentor was a physician with some dermatologic training, and she taught me a little about these conditions and what to look for."

"Yes, I am familiar with some skin conditions. Patients with eczema should use lubricants and take hydrating bathes to alleviate dryness. They should also use Topical steroids such as hydrocortisone and oral histamines for itching. Impetigo is contagious, and you prescribe mupirocin ointment for nonbullous; antibiotics include cephalexin or dicloxacillin QID X 10 days."

As part of MinuteClinic's services, we provide screening and monitoring of certain conditions such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Do you know how to take a manual blood pressure?

"Yes, I do know how to take a manual blood pressure. I went to school to become a certified nurse's assistant and was instructed on the proper procedure to take blood pressure and what readings need to be reported to a physician."

Many healthcare facilities use digital monitors to check blood pressure. However, there are times when a reading may appear lower or higher than normal, and taking a manual blood pressure is warranted. If you have any experience, this could be a plus!

Let the interviewer know if you are trained in how to take manual and digital blood pressures and where you used your skill. If you do not have training in this, explain how you learn quickly and are excited to gain this experience with MinuteClinic.

"I have taken a manual blood pressure a few times. I would be willing to practice and perfect that skill if it would benefit my employment with MinuteClinic, Inc."

One of the services offered by MinuteClinic is minor injury care. Have you ever removed sutures or staples from a wound?

"I used to work in a family practice office. We saw several patients daily who had some minor injury. Whether it was a sprained ankle, laceration, or something along those lines, we provided care in the office as much as possible. I do have experience with removal of both staples and sutures."

Minor injury care is one of the services offered by MinuteClinic, Inc. Any experience you have with minor injury care is relevant. So, if you have removed sutures or staples, as the question asks, share that. If you have not, share any injury care you may have experience with.

It will not be a deal-breaker if you do not have experience removing staples or sutures, but it will be a bonus if you have this expertise. The interviewer wants to know if you will need training in this procedure or not.

"Yes, I do have experience with minor injury care. I have removed sutures and staples, re-dressed wounds, and performed minor splinting for broken and dislocated fingers."

MinuteClinic provides pregnancy evaluation but not maternity care. Have you ever done pregnancy testing for a client?

"I worked in a Family Practice clinic lab for three years. I performed many pregnancy tests, including urine specimen collection and venipunctures for blood testing."

MinuteClinic, Inc. provides pregnancy testing but refers clients to a maternity provider or advises clients to see their primary care provider if a positive test result occurs, in cases of pregnancy or hormone injections within the previous 12 months, or when the patient has abnormal vaginal bleeding. Experience with pregnancy testing is a plus but not a requirement with MinuteClinic, Inc. Nevertheless, share any experience you have with the interviewer.

Focus on keeping your answer brief and to the point. If you have experience doing pregnancy testing, describe where you gained your experience. If you have not performed pregnancy testing on a patient, explain that you are unfamiliar with the procedure but are eager to learn.

"Yes, I do have experience with performing pregnancy tests. I also had an opportunity to work with clinicians in arranging referrals for clients to see maternity providers at my last job."

"As not just a healthcare provider, but as a consumer as well, I can see where clinics like these offer an opportunity to receive care to those who either don't have time to take off work to see their regular physician or who have a non-emergency condition after their physician's office has closed."

The idea of clinics that are easily accessible with shorter wait times is something that providers and consumers alike are excited about. Share your thoughts on why these clinics are successful with the interviewer.

There is no right or wrong answer to this question. The interviewer merely wants to hear your thoughts on why you think clinics like MinuteClinic succeed.

"I can think of many reasons these clinics may be successful. Convenience is the first thing that comes to mind. Knowing there is somewhere to go for a non-emergency visit open after normal physician's office hours is a great selling point for any consumer."

In your opinion, what makes you a great problem solver?
