Our rewards program for guests is Marriott Bonvoy. How familiar are you with the program?

"Marriott Bonvoy is a wonderful perks program that your company runs. Through it, I can receive free room nights and other amenities. I love that there are different levels with incentives for those who don't stay often, to a whole suite of services for those who do. While I am not as familiar with the particulars, I am looking forward to promoting it with every guest we connect with."

Marriott Bonvoy is the rewards program that Marriott has to extend perks to its clients and members. The interviewer needs to know that you have at least some basic knowledge of this program because it is a big part of Marriott's marketing campaigns. Share with the hiring manager any research you did on the program before the interview. Be confident in your ability to master the program and promote it successfully.

What is your definition of hospitality?

"I believe that hospitality is the act of serving someone else. I love that Marriott commits to care for every guest who walks through its doors. I want to be working with a company like this."

Marriott International, like every hotel company, is in the hospitality business. The interviewer needs to know that you have an excellent concept of hospitality and service. Talk with the hiring manager about how you feel about being kind, caring, and of service. Reassure the interviewer that you are capable of carrying on the vision Marriott has for its company.

"My definition of hospitality would be the act of selfless care. I want every guest who stays at one of our properties to experience that selfless care every time they come in. I believe in order to do that, you must have a well-trained staff, who knows how to exceed the customer's expectations."

Because of the nature of our business, we will ask to conduct a complete background check before hiring you at Marriott. Are there any issues that might hinder you from doing so?

"I am more than willing to comply with a background check; however, I will disclose to you that I have a mark on my record from a marijuana possession charge 12 years ago. I was a teenager at the time and regret that choice. It's best you know from me as opposed to finding out through a background check."

Almost every hotel company will run a background check to weed out unhirable candidates. The interviewer is asking this question to screen you should there be an issue. This is the best time to be forthright and honest about any issue you might have, like a criminal record. Full disclosure may not make you exempt from employment with Marriott - they may need to understand the charge and assess the risk.

"I have a clean record and am happy to comply with any background checks you require. Would you like for me to obtain a police check for you this week?"

At Marriott many of our positions require you to wear a uniform to work. Are there any issues that would prevent you from doing so?

"I can understand why Marriott requires a uniform from most employees. I have seen your uniforms, and they seem very comfortable, and the colors are great. I do wear a hijab, so can you please confirm that your uniform code allows for that?"

Almost every hotel company will have a personal appearance standard they will expect you to adhere to. Many hospitality-based companies will require you to wear a uniform. This decision can also be for security reasons or to help customers be able to identify you better. this is a wonderful opportunity to discuss in detail what some of the personal appearance standards might be. It is okay to ask to see the outfit before you agree to wear it.

"I have seen your uniforms and am 100% comfortable with that. I've had a dress code for work the last ten years and quite enjoy taking the guesswork out of dressing for work. In addition to being more professional, I believe that uniforms create a better sense of unity in the workplace."

Working in hospitality can be a thankless job with lots of stress and long hours. What motivates you to be involved in working for Marriott even on the more challenging days?

"I realize that there will be challenging days. For myself, words of encouragement motivate me. If you see me doing something right - even if it is small - tell me that you noticed. I don't need to run 100% smoothly every day, but I sure like to feel appreciated by my employer. This is also a way that I try to encourage and retain the employees I supervise, with lots of public praise."

Like any job in the hospitality industry, working for a hotel can sometimes be exhausting. The interviewer would like to know that you recognize this dynamic about the position and how Marriott can situate itself to retain you. This is a wonderful opportunity to discuss how you might empower and engage employees who might work under you. Be passionate about your ability to handle the many stressors this position may produce.

"I don't mind a good challenge as long as I feel that my performance is making a difference. Because I have a bit of a competitive streak, you can keep me motivated by including me in the conversation regarding the difference I am making through my work and tenacity."

The internet is constantly changing the conversation between Marriott and our customers. What are your thoughts on the use of social media marketing platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram?

"I see that Marriott has a strong social media platform. You are very engaged with your followers and commenters. Social media marketing has influenced companies to react faster and more openly to customer complaints - which is great. I am 100% on board with where social media marketing is taking the hospitality industry, and I think that Marriott is doing a great job with online brand management."

The interviewer would like to know that you are savvy when it comes to the reach of online marketing. Share how aware are you that every move you make can be quickly scrutinized and immediately commented on via social media. While this may mean access to problems or concerns more quickly, it can also mean that a faster response to complaints is needed. Talk about how you have seen social media marketing affect your current or previous employers.

"I think that social media, like all things, can have a positive side and a negative side. If social media marketing is managed very diligently, I believe it's a great tool to converse with clients and customers in a fast and effective way."

Tell me about a time when you made a suggestion requesting change in an organization.

"Last year when I was managing front-of-house, I noticed a pretty solid opportunity for us to coordinate with a local spa to provide our guests with this service. We worked with the owner of the business to provide transportation and discount pricing. In addition, a special advertisement was printed and placed in each welcome packet. I created a presentation and gave it to my manager, who took it to upper management. The changes were implemented, and I was very proud of the suggestion that I made."

Marriott loves to seek new ways of providing services their guests need. This necessitates a culture of change and flexibility. The interviewer needs to know that you can recognize when change is required and be confident enough to present that to your organization. Talk to the interviewer about a time when you were able to suggest a change in the workplace. Be confident as you share.

"I made a recommendation, in my current role, for a change in how our guests are treated by employees called the STAR program. We were having an issue with recognizing our guests and calling them by name, so every time a manager spotted an employee using a guest's name intentionally, they could give them a star token with the employee's name on it. Each month, every department got to pull one employee who received a $100 bonus. I was very proud that our CSI scores went up as a result of the program."

At Marriott we put our customers needs first. What is your customer service philosophy?

"I read on the Marriott website that you continue to be a leader in your industry because of your commitment to bringing the most innovative products and experiences to your customers. This aligns well with my customer service philosophy. I believe in keeping customers engaged by providing an excellent experience every time they visit."

Marriott has a wonderful reputation for providing excellent customer service. The interviewer needs to know that you share this commitment to service by asking you to state your passion for service. Assure the interviewer that you will honor the customer service values at Marriott. If you take the time to read through their website, you will likely come across a few critical statements on their customer service values. Refer to those particular keywords when answering this question.

"My customer service philosophy centers around putting the needs of the guest above anything else. I pride myself in training the staff to exceed expectations so that the guest feels the passion we have for excellence. that is why I am applying for a position at Marriott because your first two core values are We pursue excellence, and we put people first. I want to work for a company that has that kind of culture."

What would you do if a guest arrived, found out we had oversold, and that we did not have any rooms?

" I would meet the guest personally to apologize for not having a room as they had requested. I would comp the room and find accommodations at a neighboring hotel. Then I would offer to drive them over to the hotel and have them picked up in the morning if that was needed."

Every service industry, including hotels, overbooks their rooms to ensure full capacity. The interviewer knows that this is a possible scenario that you might face. They need to know that you have the skill set to deal with what may be an irate customer. Reassure the hiring manager that you can remain calm and find a workable solution for the guest.

"I am would do everything I could to accommodate the guest. If a neighboring hotel had a room, I would book one and then let the guest know that we would pay for their room. I might give them other perks like a free dinner in our restaurant."

Give me an example of a time when you went above and beyond.

"Last week, I noticed that my manager had not completed the schedule for the following week. Some of the staff were complaining that they didn't have their work schedule yet. Rather than going to my manager with the complaint, I offered to take on some of her workload so that she would have the time to complete the schedule. We worked together for a couple of overtime hours that day and were able to catch her up on everything. It felt good to help."

Marriott has a reputation for taking great care of its guests. The interviewer needs to know that you can do more than just the bare minimum. Show that you can react appropriately when the need to exceed expectations arises. Be enthusiastic about your willingness to do so.

"I enjoy going above and beyond in my work. In my last position, I regularly called customers to check-in and see how they were doing, even if there was no news or issues with our service to discuss. I believe going above and beyond for customers is what kept them loyal to us."

Marriott International is the largest hotel chain in the world. How much do you know about who we are and what we do?

"I know that Marriott International is the largest hotel chain in the world with almost 1 1/2 million rooms worldwide. I was surprised that your company owns 37 different lodging brands and that you also own timeshares. I am very excited about working for a company like Marriott because I know that there will be more opportunities for advancement."

Marriott International is the largest hotel chain in the world, operating in over 131 countries through 7,657 properties and 37 brands. The interviewer needs to know that you have done some research on the company and have some knowledge about the strength of the company you are applying for. Share with the hiring manager some of the things that you have learned during your online research. Be enthusiastic about the possibilities of working for such a major player in the hospitality industry.

"Marriott has a wonderful reputation for providing an excellent hospitality experience. I love the fact that you have over 7,600 properties operating under 47 brands. I know that your headquarters is in Maryland and that Bill Marriott Jr. now runs the company. I look forward to working for a company like Marriott."

At Marriott we have many strong competitors. In your opinion, how do we stand out from the crowd?

"When I did an online search for Marriott, I noticed that your reviews are much more positive than your competitors' reviews. Many of your customers mentioned that you stand out by way of excellent customer service and competitive pricing. I was quite impressed with what I read. Obviously, Marriott is a top choice for many."

This is a standard question that is asked toward the beginning of the interview. The interviewer would like to know that you have researched Marriott and that you have an understanding of what makes them the best in their industry! List a couple of ways that you feel Marriott stands out from its competitors. You can find ideas on the company website or online review sites.

"I think that Marriott stands out from the crowd because of your strong branding message. Your customers know what to expect when they walk in, and you seem always to match or exceed those expectations."

Are you currently interviewing with any direct competitors of Marriott?

"I am active in my job search and have targeted companies similar to Marriott. Currently, I am in the first interview stages with two other organizations. I hope to have an offer of employment as soon as possible; however, I am holding out for the perfect opportunity. This role with Marriott sounds like a fantastic fit for me. When are you hoping to have a decision made?"

This question is generally asked later in the interview. It is always best to be honest and answer this question with full disclosure in mind. The interviewer is asking this question because they want to know how quickly they need to move to avoid you being scooped by a competitor! Always let the interviewer know that you are actively looking, but reiterate why Marriott is your top choice. Feel free to ask the interviewer about their hiring timeline as well!

"I am selective about where I interview. I chose to apply with Marriott because you are the best in your business! I am eager to make a move but will not take a position that feels like a perfect fit. Do you have a timeline for your hiring decision?"

"You should hire me because I am unlike anyone else you have interviewed before. When I started with my current company, I was the youngest salesperson they had ever hired. That didn't stop me from becoming the #1 salesperson in the company within six months. I am dedicated to my craft and engaged in this industry to the point where I commit myself to take at least one business development or leadership-related workshop every business quarter. I am a competitive achiever. You won't be disappointed when you hire me."

If you can't think of ways that you are unique, ask a few friends or family members what sets you apart from other people. Their observations may help you understand how you are perceived.Perhaps you already know what sets you apart! Your answer could include any industry accolades, unique achievements, additional industry-related training, a second language, or your involvement in the community. Don't be afraid to brag about yourself a bit. In an interview, you are your most influential advocate.

"I have over a dozen years of experience in the industry at one of your largest competitors. I have a proven track record of success there and will bring that knowledge here to Marriott. You will see a positive impact from me right away."

Do you have any questions about the position that you would like to ask me?

"What attracts me most to this position is the fact that your organization puts so much effort into professional development for your employees. It's awe-inspiring to me."

The interviewer knows that just as the hotel needs to find the right candidate, the applicant needs to be assured that the company is the right fit. This is a wonderful opportunity to engage the hiring manager about any questions you might have concerning exactly what your responsibilities might be. The perfect fit needs to go both ways. Assure the interviewer that you see this role as a stable fit for you and discuss why. Be specific.

"I am most attracted to this particular position with Marriott because it is a job function that I am familiar with, yet in an industry that is new to me. I look forward to learning more about the hospitality industry."

List three words that best describe you and tell me why you chose them.

"I am personable and friendly, and always strive to treat my guests with respect and warmth. I am creative in that I love to design new sales promos or employee incentive programs. I am teachable because I have a love for learning. I believe that these qualities would benefit Marriott, and I can hardly wait to work with you to show how great an employee I can be."

The interviewer is looking for candidates that will make a lasting impression. The reason they ask this question is to provide you with an opportunity to do just that. Consider this an open door to expressing three things that the hiring manager will be impressed with and remember. Share the qualities you have with passion, and relate how they will benefit the hotel.

"I would choose diligence because I do not like to leave work undone. Resourceful because I love to find solutions to problems when others don't want to. And I am energetic because I always have a pep in my step when it comes to working. I believe that I will be a valuable employee to you."

Marriott International believes in promoting a healthy life/work balance. What are some things that you do to leave the stress of work behind when you are not on the clock?

"I handle stress very well and like to spend time with my boys when I am not at work. I am just starting to teach them to fish. So often on the weekends, we will grab our poles and put a line in the water to see what is biting."

The interviewer is trying to get to know you as a person. He knows that a well-rounded employee with a proper life/work balance will be more productive in the long run. Share with the interviewer some activities that you engage in during off-hours. Be enthusiastic about the activities you are involved in so that the hiring manager will see your passion as well.

"Stress is part of any demanding job, and I embrace it to the fullest. I take good care of myself by running in marathons every couple of months. Of course, I spend my off-hours training for those events, but I love being a runner and find that it helps keep me centered."

Marriott believes in corporate responsibility by trying to help causes in our local community. What charities or causes do you support and why?

"I love the fact that this hotel has been involved in habitat for humanity for years. I was a part of a team that helped build one of the homes in our area last year, just as your team did. I want to be a part of a company culture that always looks for ways to make the community a better place."

Marriott International has a strong reputation for corporate social responsibility. The interviewer knows that the hotel will be involved in supporting local charities or causes of its choosing to try and make the community around it a better place. Share with the interviewer some causes that you are involved in and support. Be passionate as you share, highlighting any cause you know is supported by you and the hotel.

"I am very involved with the American Cancer Society and their yearly fundraising event. I believe in this cause due to a grandmother who died of breast cancer. I also participate in the 5k that your hotel sponsors to raise money for the local food bank. I am looking forward to working with a company that is civic-minded like Marriott."

Who would you say inspires you and why?

"I find inspiration in a variety of people and things. I would have to say that the person who has most greatly inspired me has been my grandmother. She always had a smile on her face no matter how hard she worked, and she loved everyone. She was well respected and always gave more than she received. I try to live like her as much as I can."

The interviewer is asking this question to get to know more about you and what your passion is. Your life's inspiration can come from a book, a mentor, your family, a celebrity, an author - literally anyone! Think about what or who might inspire you to be the person you are. This is a wonderful opportunity to build rapport with the hiring manager.

"My previous manager was a huge inspiration to me. Her passion for this industry was motivating and put the fire in me to climb the ladder in my career. I think that her example of how to handle the daily pressures of the hospitality industry formed me into the kind of employee I am today."

When have you worked amongst a diverse group of people?

"I have worked with diverse groups of people most of my career, including my time in University. I am most comfortable and happy in this type of environment because it offers a great learning opportunity."

At Marriott we prefer to hire those with a business, hospitality, or tourism related diploma or degree. Walk me through your post-secondary education. How has it prepared you for this role?

"I have a Diploma in Travel and Tourism from Reeves College. This post-secondary experience was very positive, and I learned about the hospitality industry inside and out. My favorite course from the program was Marketing and Business Management. I believe this course gave me a keen eye for the large and small ways to make a positive change. I look forward to applying that knowledge to this role with Marriott."

Your post-secondary education is on your resume; however, the interviewer would like for you to go into further detail. Discuss how your post-secondary education has prepared you for a role with Marriott. If you do not have any formal post-secondary education, you can refer to your previous work experience or related on-the-job training.

"Although my related training is all on-the-job training, I am confident that I will exceed your expectations in this role with Marriott. I bring five years of similar experience from my previous role. That company was particularly strong when it came to their training resources, so I am fully equipped and trained to perform well in this role."

Tell me about your exposure to hospitality related software and technology.

"I have been exposed to a few Point of Sale and Booking Systems that sound similar to what you are using here at Marriott. I am tech-savvy and am confident that I could pick up on your technology very quickly."

No matter your function with Marriott, chances are, you will need to learn their internal software and technology. If the interviewer asks this type of question, reassure them of your ability to adapt to a new system and learn it quickly. Ask the interviewer which systems they use, and then discuss how they may be similar to the programs you are already familiar with.

"Could you tell me which programs and software you use? I have used a variety of hospitality-related software and technology, so I am confident in my ability to learn your programs quickly."

What is the most competitive work situation you have experienced?

"My current sales position is highly commission based, so my colleagues and I are quite competitive. Despite being competitive, we have a great work environment where we help each other when someone is struggling to meet their quota. We coach each other on sales techniques and share success stories. The result has been a positive work environment with healthy competition."

Marriott wants to provide a culture where they can bring out the best in their employees. At times, these efforts mean that you will have some competition with fellow workers. The interviewer needs to know that you will embrace these efforts. Think back to when you were racing others to achieve the highest sales, were working towards a promotion, or eagerly trying to win a new contract. Show the interviewer that you rose to the challenge and were excited to push yourself to be the best. It is a definite plus if you have cheered on your competitors and helped them along the way. Finally, be sure to mention any successful outcome.

"One of the most competitive work situations I have experienced was driving a sales team to perform beyond the quota. We collaborated to come up with creative goal-setting approaches, and our leadership team created recognition incentives to encourage strong performance along the way. It was a challenge, but we beat all of our competition and made it happen!"

How do you like to encourage ideas in others?

"I like to encourage other people to be creative in their thinking and present ideas to the company, no matter how off the wall they may seem. Some of our most successful employees are ones who are confident in their ability to bring forward their unique ideas. I encourage participation through an open door policy and strong praise for those who show initiative."

Encouragement to others is a great skill to possess. Talk to the interviewer about your ability to encourage creative ideas in your team members.

"I encourage people to tap into the best parts of themselves. It helps to ask probing questions to get them to generate ideas on their own. I have found that by painting a long-term vision for where I want to go, my team will often jump in with creative solutions to get us there."

Marriott offers a very competitive compensation plan. What are your salary expectations?

"I am open to discussing the pay structure offered by Hotel ABC. I have earned a base salary plus commission for the past five years, and I appreciate the security and earnings flexibility that comes with this pay structure. Could you share with me how the company structures pay for its Hotel Managers?"

The interviewer is asking this question because, as difficult as the subject of pay compensation is, it is a topic that needs to be addressed. Use this question as an opportunity to gather the information you may need to make the best career decision. Be res[pectful and optimistic as you dialogue with the hiring manager. You want to demonstrate a willingness to accept the compensation plan in as positive of manner as possible.

"I am currently making $128,000 per year with an annual bonus opportunity based on hotel profits and the cost savings that I produce. I am looking for a compensation plan aligned with other hotel management roles in the area and provides an opportunity for growth. I look forward to discussing the details of this role so that we can determine a fair compensation plan."

What is your current benefits package?

"I am currently working for a company that has medical, dental, and vision. I would be very interested in the suite of benefits that your company offers."

Marriott International has a fine grouping of benefits that it offers to its employees. In our day and age, having the right benefits is just as important a factor in a job as its pay. Use this question to gather the information you need to make an intelligent decision regarding your career.

"I am currently working for a company that has an excellent benefits program. What are the benefits that your company has to offer?"

Tell me about a time when you had to encourage a fellow team member. How was your encouragement received?

"Our business development lead was stressing out last month because she was only 88% to quota with just two days left in the month. I sat with her after work, and we brainstormed some great ideas to implement for quick results. She ended up closing the month at 104% and had an amazing ramp up to the next month. I believe that encouragement can come in many forms. In this instance, she just needed someone to bounce ideas off of!"

The interviewer would like to know that you can successfully motivate others without it coming across as condescending. For this question, use a scenario when your encouragement was well received and resulted in a positive change or outcome.

"A teammate was going to quit due to various frustrations. By putting SMART goals into place that would allow him to understand how he'd get to hit his targets, he changed his attitude at work and ultimately received a promotion. It was great to see him turn around so well."

This position will require you to work with employees and supervisors of other departments. Share with me an experience when you had to work with someone from a different area than your own.

"In my previous job, I was in charge of purchasing, which means that I worked with every department in the hotel. I have no issues working with other managers or employees and helping them have the items they need to succeed at their jobs. There are procedures that have to be followed - requisitions and such, but most of the time, I got along with almost everyone."

In any hotel setting, there are multiple departments with their own staff. Your position will likely require you to interact with them each day. The interviewer asks this question to determine that you can work well with others and be respectful of managers from other locations. Reassure the hiring manager of your ability to cross coordinate with other departmental employees. Your ability to do so can become a wonderful opportunity to grow your skillset as an employee.

"I have had to work with many employees from different departments, and I have no issues doing so. In my previous position, I took direction from three separate managers and received their feedback constantly. I have no trouble with criticism as long as it is done professionally."

"I would like to work for a company that recognizes that their employees are the most important asset they have. I would take advantage of every educational opportunity I was given and would welcome the chance to learn from other departments so that I can help my teammates if needed."

If I encountered an unsafe condition, I would work hard to ensure that it was corrected as soon a possible. If that was not possible, I would stand there and warn customers so that no one got hurt."

The safety of guests and employees is a sacred trust that every hotel company shares. The interviewer needs to know that you are a person who will be observant so that no dangerous conditions are allowed to exist.
