"I have an intuitive and adventurous spirit and an engineering mind. Ever since I was a kid, I loved building and assembling things. I also love nice furniture; I love decorating and IKEA. As a kid, I loved coming with my parents to IKEA. Whenever we brought stuff home, I was the one to assemble what we bought. I've always loved doing it and still do. To this day, I am a big fan of IKEA and already feel like one of the team. I find excuses to shop here, even when I don't need anything. And, your food is excellent! "I am happy to offer a flexible schedule and work overtime as needed. I take an evening college course on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so I would not be available those days, after 5 PM."

Most retail positions require a wide range of hours, which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and split shifts, and IKEA is no exception. When things don't go according to plan, such as staff quitting or calling out sick, those moments are when your flexibility is needed the most. "My reaction to employee theft would differ if I were a retail associate or a retail manager. If I were a manager and caught an employee stealing, I would terminate them immediately. If I were an associate, I would report the incident according to company protocol. I would avoid approaching the employee as I would not want to make it a personal issue."

"I would say, first and foremost, I'm a major team player; I do my best work when I feel like I'm a valuable member of a team instead of just a cog in a machine. You cannot force others to communicate with you in a way that you would always prefer. Ingvar Kamprad elaborates on this with, "If you've ever visited IKEA, you'll have probably worked out what our business idea is, to offer a wide range of well-designed, functional home furnishing products at prices so low that as many people as possible will be able to afford them." "The thing I value most as a consumer and customer is honesty -- I don't like to feel 'sold to.' I know that a lot of IKEA shoppers have already decided what they're looking for before they come into the store because they have access to the amazing IKEA catalogue. I would adopt the IKEA vision by being warm, friendly, and hospitable to a customer, and then giving them my honest advice and product knowledge if they have questions about a specific item."

If I'm not trying to outperform myself, I feel like I am letting myself down, and I hate disappointing myself."

"I prefer to work in a collaborative environment as opposed to a competitive one. I feel like sales-focused competitions send the wrong signal to customers. "If I had an aggressive and disrespectful customer, I would remain calm, remain respectful, listen to them, make sure they felt heard, empathize with them, and exhibit the patience required to give them time to communicate what they needed and deescalate the situation any way I could."

In any customer-facing position in a retail environment, while acting as a representative of the brand, you may sometimes experience interactions with customers that don't go as well as you'd like. Share how your brand of diplomacy and nondefensive communication has diffused such situations in the past. Tell me about a time you thought of a better way to get something done.

"I had a coworker who was trying hard to explain a new system they'd envisioned for a work process, but they were having a great deal of difficulty communicating conceptually. So I advised them to create a presentation and gave them some tips on how to build it out. They ran with this advice and were able to articulate their thoughts well. Even though our leadership didn't adopt their plans, it helped them better articulate how to communicate conceptually, and eventually, they no longer needed the visuals to get their points across."

"We're constantly trying to find better ways to get things done and to bring out the best in ourselves and others. Questions change per position but always focus on how you handled various work situations in the past. So, think about it and be ready to share specific situations that you've been in where you had to use certain skills, such as decision-making, teamwork, problem-solving, communication, etc. Learn something new from someone who's different from you. Come up with ideas. Write them down. Ask why - and why not?! Pick each other's brain. Exchange ideas. Make plans. Make them happen. Invite someone new into the conversation. Share stories about recent trips or discoveries. Get an update on that meeting you missed while you were away."

What does your brand of customer service look like?

"My brand of customer service is to accept the customer as one of the team. I'm a fan of IKEA, and I imagine IKEA customers are as well. So, we're in it together. I would accept all IKEA customers into the fan club and offer them the same respect, patience, and empathy as everyone else. They're a member of the family, they're a friend, and they are home."

When it comes to finding the right people to deliver their brand of customer service, IKEA states they are looking for answer-finders and problem-solvers who love connecting with people. They are looking for individuals who will capably resolve customer concerns independently to meet their unique needs and expectations and build and retain long-lasting relationships with new and existing customers. "Our modus operandi is to connect to people by listening to their personal needs and to create genuine interactions. We're a bunch of people who are truly passionate about people!"

We need reliable people on our team at IKEA. How many days were you absent from work last year?

"I had zero unexcused absences last year. In total, I took 12 vacation days out of my 15 allotted days. I was out sick for two, both accompanied by a doctor's note. Once I was late due to a terrible snowstorm, but I always try to be 10 minutes early for my shift."

Talk to the interviewer about your attendance. If you missed several days of work, offer context. Not all absences will be viewed negatively. If you are sick and contagious, the last thing your leaders will want is for you to come in and put the health of your teams and customers at risk. However, it is important to communicate your efforts to arrive to work on time and how well you manage your time in your personal and professional life. A part of being a diligent employee is ensuring you are always on time and present when expected. It's great to even be 10 minutes early rather than just showing up right on the dot.

"I'm a mom, so I constantly think of strategies to respond to the unexpected. I believe you should always be prepared for something to go wrong. Since I'm constantly strategizing how to react to a problem, I usually have a good plan in place when the unexpected happens. But I make sure everyone on my team knows so that it allows them to adjust things on their end if needed."

This question probes deeper to assess how organized and conscientious your work ethic is. "I stay calm and composed when issues arise. My dad got rear-ended one time when driving me to school. I texted my friend to see if she could tell my teacher what happened. I explained the situation to my teacher when I got to class. If this happened on my way to work, I would call ahead of time to ensure someone could cover my shift."

"What I would do is call my supervisor, explain the details of the situation, and let them know I might be late. After that, I would work out a way to get to work ASAP."

What's your favorite food?

"My favorite food is the super fresh salmon IKEA gets from sustainable sources. I also like how healthy it is and how it is sustainably farmed. I also love their meatballs."

"I have reliable transportation. I have a well-maintained vehicle, and I am comfortable with the amount of travel required to get to your office every day."

In most states, it is illegal for an interviewer to ask if you have a car, which can create bias against your socioeconomic status or cause the interviewer to unfairly question your reliability. However, this rephrased question seeks to reveal the same information without asking it directly. There is no need to over-share by explaining how you plan to get to and from work. Simply tell the interviewer that you have the means to get to work consistently and on time.

"I take public transit; however, I find it very reliable. I was late to work only once last year, and that was due to a snowstorm that stalled all of our employees' commutes, including those with personal vehicles. Rest assured, I am reliable and will always come to work on time."

"I do have reliable transportation. I have a good car, and I live less than half an hour from IKEA, and I strive to be on time."

At IKEA, we value diversity, inclusion, and equality. What makes IKEA stand out to you as a great place to work?

"The 50/50 gender balance is extremely important to me. I enjoyed reading the information on your website about how IKEA has achieved a 50/50 balance so far and their plans for the future. It's clear that they take their values seriously and implement strategies to care for their employees at every level of the business, so I'm very excited about the possibility of working here."

This question aims to assess your level of cultural competence and whether you can collaborate with their diverse teams and effectively represent the company's ideals. "An inclusive workplace is a better workplace. At IKEA, everyone has a home. To us, your uniqueness is an asset. When was the last time you failed at something?

"If at first you don't succeed, right? It's true. If you're not failing on occasion, you're not trying. I suppose I do what anyone else would do - learn from my mistakes and keep at it until my success rate increases. The last time I failed, my goal was to finish a project three days before the deadline, but I finished with only a day to spare. But I'm getting better."

The best way to answer questions regarding professional failures is by taking ownership of them. Don't hold back or act insecure when sharing your failures. Take ownership of them. No one can hold over you what you already own. And, if you share your failures and what you've learned from them, then there's no reason this will hold anyone back from hiring you. This presents you as an asset rather than a liability. The more you learn, the less likely you are to repeat the mistakes you make in the future. Everyone has setbacks, but what we learn from them shores up a greater likelihood of success.

Taking ownership of your actions shows you embrace IKEA's key value of giving and taking responsibility: "We believe in empowering people. Giving and taking responsibility are ways to grow and develop as individuals. Trusting each other, being positive and forward-looking inspires everyone to contribute to development."

How do you maintain a balance between your work life and home life?

"I'm pretty organized with my time and value the effect a clean and orderly space has on my psyche. I just want to feel harmony in everything I do. I want to feel at home wherever I am, and the harmony I feel at home can be reached anywhere by keeping my spaces organized at home, at work, and even in my car."

Take the five keys and consider how you can use them to balance your personal and professional well-being.

How balanced your personal life is with your professional life can offer clues whether you'll be able to function productively in both spheres, leave your professional life at work, and not bring issues concerning your personal life to work. How you answer will offer insights into how sustainable an employee you are. Someone whose balance is off could potentially disrupt the productivity of their teams and potentially burn out on the job. Consider these points when answering this question.

"I consider myself a very emotionally intelligent person and am aware of anything that could potentially cause me undue stress, and in most circumstances, that can be avoided with a little preparation. So I prepare for each morning the night before, just as my meals are planned the week before. I am very proactive and rarely experience stress. As a result, I consider myself a rather well-balanced individual, at home and work."

Depending on the position, retail experience is preferred but not essential. Do you have any retail or sales experience?

"I started working in retail about four years ago and have grown to enjoy it. My favorite part of working in this industry is that there are always new problems to solve, so it keeps my mind engaged. I also enjoy learning new things, so I'm excited about acquiring more knowledge about IKEA products so I can confidently share that information with customers."

At IKEA, the job descriptions for most customer-facing roles state that one year of sales or customer service experience is preferred. But strong social skills, emotional maturity, empathy, and patience are more important, as is a passion for home furnishings and sustainable living. Describe your retail experience or any experience you feel makes you well-suited to accomplishing the tasks and assignments of an IKEA retail coworker.

"While I don't yet have any retail experience, I'm excited to get started! I have a firm grasp of customer service; for the last two years, I've worked at an IT call center, helping clients with computer issues. Even though it's a very different industry, the essential qualities of good customer service are consistent -- a positive, helpful attitude; deep knowledge and the ability to confidently communicate that knowledge with customers; and the ability to prioritize to find the most efficient way of solving a problem or accomplishing a task. I think my experience has made me very well-suited for a job at IKEA."

How would you describe your style of leadership?

"I lead by example from a place of integrity and according to my values, many of which are shared by IKEA. That's what attracted me to the company in the first place. Her enthusiasm for the work was contagious; if a coworker was having a bad day, she always had a kind word or a positive spin on the situation that turned the energy around. She's the exact kind of person I love working for."

That was the first time I bit off more than I could chew. As soon as I realized this, I spoke with my supervisor, hoping to delegate or share some of these responsibilities with others. They offered me both, and since that day, I've dramatically improved and built out my time management skills."

It is common when wanting to develop yourself professionally and being committed to contributing to the team, to at least once take on more responsibilities than you can manage in a given period. This question aims at determining how far along your professional development is. Your answer will provide insights into your ambition and your time management skills. Give me an example of a time you went above and beyond.

"At my last job, I had an idea about how to standardize and organize the stockroom so that things moved more efficiently. One week, I spent my evenings after work coming up with a solid plan that I thought I could implement in during one shift, and then I took my idea and plan to my manager. She thought the idea was good, so I asked if I could use one of my upcoming shifts to put my plan into action, and she agreed. After that, things moved much more efficiently in the stock room, and my coworkers appreciated how much easier it was to find everything they were looking for. It allowed us to focus on what our customers needed on the sales floor."

IKEA's core values focus on initiative, innovation, and accepting and delegating responsibility. "Enthusiasm, togetherness, and a 'get-it-done' attitude is what our culture is built upon. We're optimists, constantly looking for new and better ways to do things." They are looking for candidates who accept responsibility for their commitments, strive to go beyond your day-to-day obligations, and identify better ways to accomplish their tasks.

Anytime you are faced with a question about going above or beyond or going the extra mile, it is an evaluation of your work style and work ethic. Your answer will indicate how often your performance standard exceeds expectations. It is best to choose an example that showcases how you always go the distance. Convey how your status quo is always going the extra mile. This is the time to shed light on everything you have to offer. If you don't over-share your accomplishments, how will they know they should have hired you?

"Last week, I noticed that my manager had not completed the schedule for the following week. Some staff complained that they didn't have their work schedule yet. Rather than going to my manager with the complaint, I offered to take on some of her workload so she would have the time to complete the schedule. We worked together for a couple of overtime hours that day and were able to catch her up on everything. It felt good to help but also benefited me by way of organization."

"When I was a sale rep, we didn't have our products in one of the largest retailers in the country. I made it my personal mission to get stock into that retailer. It took a lot of research, planning, strategizing, building relationships with the retailer and suppliers but eventually, after about a year, I got our products listed."

"In my last position, I was the sales floor manager, and my logistic manager was new to the position. I had been in her role before, and I was able to give her great feedback on how to do the job. I also asked my store manager if he could allow me to spend time with her. I was not only doing my role, but I was also helping a fellow leader move to a better situation. At IKEA, 'We Love Challenges' because they push us to achieve more. What challenges or problems have you encountered and solved at work?

"Creative problem-solving is one of my natural talents, so I feel energized when I meet a challenge at work. When I worked at a smaller, family-owned retail shop a few years ago, the owners realized that they needed a system to perform a yearly inventory but didn't know where to start. It was a big challenge because we needed to figure out how to use our limited resources and workers to complete an inventory of the entire store before the shop opened for the day. I came up with a plan to split the store into sections, like a grid, and assigned each of my coworkers a 'grid section' to work on. Everyone had to come in early in the morning, but I tried to make it as fun as possible by bringing in coffee and breakfast from a local restaurant."

Ingvar Kamprad, the founder of IKEA, was famous for taking a "no-nonsense" approach to everyday problem-solving and was quoted as saying, "Most things still remain to be done." He was excited by the knowledge that new challenges were always waiting around the corner. IKEA celebrates challenges as opportunities. Talk to the interviewer about how you react to challenges when they occur. Describe a difficult problem you worked through while on the job and when you pushed yourself beyond the limits of your comfort zone to overachieve.

"I agree with the philosophy that big challenges are opportunities for big ideas -- that's an encouraging perspective, and it makes me excited to think about working for a company that values challenge and creative problem-solving. At my last job, my managers always seemed tense and frustrated when they encountered problems, so it would be refreshing to work at a company like IKEA that has such a positive outlook on challenges."

"I love to be challenged. I love to solve problems. When I was working in a family retail business, I realized that we needed to put our business online or we would lose sales to competitors. I researched, found, and implemented an e-commerce solution. Soon we were selling 5% of our sales online!"

"At my old place of work, I was the front-end supervisor and I had the challenge to increase credit cards application because we were the worst in the district. I started to do role-playing with the cashiers for them to feel more comfortable offering our services and overcoming "No' for answers. What kind of salary are you aiming for?

"You offer a generous starting minimum wage, and the benefits package looks amazing. I hope to take on 20+ hours per week. May I ask, is the set starting rate negotiable?"

Most job postings at IKEA reveal the flat hourly rate for each position. But they also advertise, whether you're part-time or full-time, that they offer competitive benefits and perks, such as medical and Rx*, dental, vision, 401k, meal deal, store discounts, autism coverage, parental leave, pet insurance, education assistance, and more. However, many benefits are only available to those who maintain a schedule of 20 or more hours a week.

If they make you an offer and ask if you would be willing to accept their hourly rate, you can certainly ask them if it is negotiable. If they inform you that their offer is non-negotiable, feel free to ask them some questions. Inquire how many performance reviews there are each year and if each review grants eligibility for a pay increase. Ask if there is a percentage cap per each increase. Ask what the ultimate wage cap is for your position and what the wage cap is for any other positions you might grow into. Asking such questions can give you tangible ideas of whether they can meet your goals and expectations in a reasonable timeframe. Asking such questions shows you have your eyes on the big picture, ask lots of questions, and have a strong sense of your professional worth. You also want to show that you take time before making any rash decisions. But you don't want to take too long before informing them whether you'll accept their offer. This may incline them to offer you more if they decide you're a candidate they don't want to risk losing.

"My current sales position is highly commission-based, so it is a competitive environment. Despite being competitive, we have a great work environment where we help each other when someone is struggling to meet their quota. We coach each other on sales techniques and share success stories. The result has been a positive work environment with healthy competition."

"I approach it as if I was starting over with the interview process. I let all my new teammates interview me, and I interview them back. I create a transparent dialogue, am humble, and try to learn as much from everyone as possible. I show that I am invested in the opportunity by putting in the work in getting up to speed as possible, and through my actions, I try to show that I am trustworthy."

It is natural to want to prove yourself and start contributing immediately when hired into a new position. However, this is the time to exhibit your soft skills, such as building work relationships with your new teams. The people you will be working closely with haven't had a chance to interview you, and some may be wary of anyone new. They've helped build or contributed to building out their systems and operations and likely take pride in what they've helped build. To contribute, you must learn from your teams and respect what has come before you. Learn who each member of the team is, and share who you are and what you have to offer with humility and transparency. Tap into their knowledge, and build trust.
