We worked together for a couple of overtime hours that day and were able to catch her up on everything. It felt good to help but also benefited me by way of organization."

How do you handle situations that could cause you to be late or miss work?

"I stay calm and composed when issues arise. My dad got rear ended one time when driving me to school. I texted my friend to see if she could tell my teacher what happened. I explained the situation to my teacher when I got to class. If this happened on my way to work, I would call ahead of time to ensure someone could cover my shift."

Proper planning will get you far, but sometimes life happens, and you'll need a plan B. Think about some of the variables in your life that could affect your ability to arrive on time for work. Sick children, traffic, car breakdowns... the list goes on. It may not be possible for everything to work out so smoothly, getting your shift covered or still making it to work on time. Your interviewer is looking to see that you are proactive and that you can handle the stress of unexpected situations that can arise.

"I hope never to be late! When I started working at a restaurant at sixteen years old, we were taught the adage of 'if you're on time, you're late,' so I've worked to implement that into my life. I always try to arrive 15 minutes early, but there are unforeseen circumstances that can arise. I handle surprises using common sense and keeping courtesy to others top of mind."

"The first thing I would do would be to call in and let my supervisor know that I might be late. Then I would do everything possible to prevent me from being late. I always like to be a little early for things. I am definitely not one of those people who think it's ok to be late."

We need reliable people on our team at Homesense. How many days were you absent from work last year?

"I had zero unexcused absences last year. In total, I took 12 vacation days out of my 15 allotted days. I was sick just 2, and a note from my Doctor accompanied those. Once I was late due to a terrible snow storm, and I always try to be 10 minutes early for my shift."

A part of being a diligent employee is to ensure that you are always on time and present when expected. It's great to even be 10 minutes early rather than just showing up right on the dot. Talk to the interviewer about your attendance.

"I am very committed to my employer and am only absent in events of sickness or the odd family emergency. I do my best always to be available and present when expected."

"I can be productive in most work environments, so long as the mentality is positive and teamwork is encouraged. I cannot work in an environment that feels negative or toxic."

Tell me about a time you had to handle conflict at work.

"Many years ago, a coworker and I had an ongoing, unspoken issue between us from a situation that happened outside of work. We didn't talk about it, but I think everyone could feel the tension between us building. It finally erupted in an argument while we were at work, and our manager had to pull us aside and talk to us about our behavior. It was really embarrassing and uncomfortable, and I made a promise to myself never to let a conflict go on so long without addressing it. Now when I have an issue with something my coworker or manager has said or done, I take some time to cool off, then approach them with respect and kindness and let them know how their actions affected me. That's been a great strategy for me so far."

We've worked hard to create an exceptional company culture here at Homesense, but we know there's no way to prevent conflict from happening from time to time. Have you ever had a conflict with a coworker or manager? How did you resolve the issue?

"I've been lucky enough to never be involved in conflicts with a coworker, but I've definitely done my share of mediating between two coworkers before. The retail industry can be stressful, so naturally the stress gets to people from time to time. When I'm helping coworkers through conflict, I always make sure that I'm fully hearing both sides of the story and trying to get to the root of the hurt between them. I think the experience of having and resolving conflict can actually be really healthy -- it's made the teams I've been on that much stronger because it helps us all know how to respond to each other instead of react."

What type of manager brings out the best in you?

"The best manager I ever had really embodied a servant-leadership paradigm. She made it common practice to have one-on-one meetings with each of her team members every month or so to talk about our engagement in the work as well as what she could be doing better to bring out our best. The fact that she asked how she could improve spoke volumes to me. She's a leader I really admire."

The interviewer wants to see that you are self-aware and understand the type of manager or employer that brings out the best in you. Some individuals prefer a close working relationship with a lot of accountability, while others prefer space and autonomy. "When I first started out in retail, I felt really out of my depth. I had been working primarily desk jobs with limited interactions with others for several years, so the retail industry was a huge change. She took time to train me in areas where I struggled, and I never once felt like she was frustrated with me or that I was expected to understand everything all at once."

"I enjoy some healthy competition at work, as long as it's friendly and doesn't feel toxic. I like to celebrate the accomplishments of my teammates and want to know that my accomplishments will be celebrated as well."

This question is designed to determine if you can function well in a competitive environment. Think back to a time when you were racing others to achieve the highest sales, were working towards a promotion, or eagerly trying to win a new contract. Tell me about a time when you made a suggestion requesting change in an organization.

"January and February are really slow months at the store where I currently work, and I was trying to brainstorm some ways we could encourage customers to come into the store. I had an idea to partner with a local animal shelter to host an adoption event in our store -- our building is pet-friendly, and our customers are always bringing in their furry friends to shop with them. I took the idea to my manager, and she loved it. She gave me ownership over organizing the event, and several animals were adopted. Plus, we had record foot-traffic for that calendar day, and the sales we made helped us exceed our monthly sales goals."

In the retail business, we move fast. We're always adapting, evolving, and innovating. How do you like to be recognized for your accomplishments?

"I'm a pretty self-motivated person, so I don't require a lot of recognition when I do good work -- I think it's just part of my job to do my best! When I accomplish something really big, like the completion of a large project, I think it's nice to feel celebrated a little bit with a small gift card to a local restaurant -- that way, I can enjoy a meal with my partner and celebrate my accomplishments."

"I've been working in the retail industry for about three years, primarily for apparel retailers. I continue to earn positions like these because my managers know that they can trust me to treat the cash and merchandise with respect."

"If a co-worker failed to show up for their shift, I would pick it up if possible. I always strive to be a team player."

How do you handle customer complaints?

"Every situation is different -- just like every customer is different -- so I think it's important to use my intuition and deductive skills to understand what will make the customer feel most satisfied that their complaint has been heard and addressed. If company policy allows for it, I sometimes offer a really upset customer a small 'peace offering', like a small merchandise card or coupon."

Addressing customer complaints will likely be a part of your role at Homesense, and the interviewer wants to hear that you can confidently talk through a customer's complaint. How would you create a great customer experience while also standing by company policy?

"When a customer has a complaint, I always make sure to stop what I'm doing so I can really focus my attention on the customer. I make eye contact and use nonverbal cues to let the customer know that I'm really listening to them. And of course, I offer to correct any mistakes that were made or loop my manager into the conversation if a more specialized response is needed."

Computer and math skills are highly advised in this role. How strong are your skills in these areas?

"I did very well in math and computer literacy during High School and am comfortable with the math skills required when it comes to accepting cash, balancing a cash float, and performing inventory-related tasks."

In this role, knowledge and comfort with computers is highly advised as you will be expected to operate a point of sale system. You'll also be responsible for counting change back to the customer accurately, performing inventory tasks, and some other math-related tasks around the store. "I've unfortunately been in this position before, and it was very uncomfortable. I hated knowing that I was playing a role in a coworker potentially being fired, but I knew that the right thing to do was to go straight to my manager and let her know what I had observed. There's only one right way to handle that situation, and I would do the same again."

At Homesense, we take loss prevention seriously: it's one of the ways we ensure that we can continue passing on exceptional savings to our customers. Talk to the interviewer about how you would respond if you suspected that a coworker was stealing money or product from the store.

"My reaction to employee theft would differ if I were a retail associate or a retail manager. If I were a manager and caught an employee stealing, I would terminate them immediately. How would you handle a situation where a customer was flagged by our refund verification system?

"The process at my current store for this situation is to provide the customer with a direct number to our fraud department and let them know that our system cannot process their return. I always make sure not to make the customer feel that I suspect them. What is the process for this situation at Homesense?"

Our customers are our top priority, so we welcome returns within 30 days with a register receipt. Unfortunately, many retailers are subject to fraudulent return activity, which is why we use a refund verification system to process and track returns in order to combat fraudulent activity.
