I started scrapbooking as way to remember loved ones I've lost, and it really helped in the grieving process. I think the really important thing about serving customers is to find out what they really *need* from their hobby or creative activity -- a customer is more than just the products they're buying. There's usually a deeper story. I want to go beyond the customer/employee relationship, however briefly, and really engage each customer as a unique individual with unique needs. I think it makes me a better employee because it helps me help the customer find exactly what they're looking for, and customers who feel seen as individuals are far more likely to return to the store again."

"Just yesterday I had a customer make a purchase, and I noticed that she was struggling with her bags. She had a stroller, a couple of kids, and a lot of bags to carry. I offered to help her out to her car, and she gratefully accepted. It felt excellent to go above the call of duty that day."

How do you handle situations that could cause you to be late or miss work?

"I stay calm and composed when issues arise. My dad got rear ended one time when driving me to school. I texted my friend to see if she could tell my teacher what happened. I explained the situation to my teacher when I got to class. If this happened on my way to work, I would call ahead of time to ensure someone could cover my shift."

Proper planning will get you far, but sometimes life happens, and you'll need a plan B. Think about some of the variables in your life that could affect your ability to arrive on time for work. Sick children, traffic, car breakdowns... the list goes on. It may not be possible for everything to work out so smoothly, getting your shift covered or still making it to work on time. Your interviewer is looking to see that you are proactive and that you can handle the stress of unexpected situations that can arise.

"I hope never to be late! When I started working at a restaurant at sixteen years old, we were taught the adage of 'if you're on time, you're late,' so I've worked to implement that into my life. I always try to arrive 15 minutes early, but there are unforeseen circumstances that can arise. I handle surprises using common sense and keeping courtesy to others top of mind."

Do you have reliable transportation?

"I have reliable transportation. I have a well-maintained vehicle, and I am comfortable with the amount of travel required to get to your office every day."

Even if you're not expected to drive for the job, you will need to have some form of reliable transportation. If you take the bus or ride a bike, that works too! Merely share that you have the means to get to work consistently and on time.

"I take public transit; however, I find it to be very reliable. I was late to work only once last year, and that was due to a snowstorm which stalled all of our employee's commute - including those with personal vehicles. Rest assured, I am reliable and will always come to work on time."

What area of the store are you most interested to work in? How do you feel a job in this area will help you in your career?

"I'm really interested in the process of creating custom frames -- I know that's how Hobby Lobby got its start, so it's exciting to think I could be a part of that legacy. I don't have much experience in that area yet, but I'm interested in the combination of math skills and creativity that would be involved in creating custom frames. Are there any opportunities to work my way toward earning a position on the framing team?"

Hobby Lobby's hourly retail position range from cashier to floral design to custom framing. What positions within the store are you most interested in? Do you have experience with any of these positions? Talk to the interviewer about your future career plans and how a position at Hobby Lobby will help you achieve your goals.

"My current retail experience is mostly sales and cashier duties, but I'm interested in several other positions at Hobby Lobby as well. Specifically, I would love to move into a leadership or management position at some point, especially managing the Frame Shop or working in floral design."

"Personally, I love that Hobby Lobby has a small, hometown family feel -- as a mom, it makes me feel good to know that the company cares about family values and nurturing the families of their customers and employees. I'd love to work for a company that carefully considers how best to serve US families."

Hobby Lobby stores are privately owned and operated, and they have no plans to go public in the future. They are committed to being centered on families at every level of the organization. What do you think differentiates a family-run business from a corporate entity? What are your thoughts about working for a company like that?

"I've worked at larger corporations in the past, and I've never felt so invisible. I always felt like I was just a cog in a machine instead of an individual with autonomy and a vested interest in the success of the company. Working for a family-run business like Hobby Lobby would be such a new, different experience for me; I'm excited about the chance to feel like a real member of a team instead of just a number."

What are your salary expectations?

"Currently, I earn a base salary of $45,000 per year plus a potential 20% annual bonus. Last year my earnings were $52,000, and I would like to stay in the same range or slightly higher."

The best way to discuss your salary expectations is to use your current earnings as an example. Be open, and honest. Transparency is the best choice when salary based questions arise.

"I am currently making $22/hour with two bonus opportunities. I am looking for compensation that is aligned with the role and provides an opportunity for growth."

"I am best motivated through words of praise and recognition for a job well done. I do like to know that my efforts are noticed. In my current position, we have a leaderboard and I do like that concept because it creates a healthy bit of personal competition for me as well."

"I had zero unexcused absences last year. In total, I took 12 vacation days out of my 15 allotted days. I was sick just 2, and a note from my Doctor accompanied those. Once I was late due to a terrible snow storm, and I always try to be 10 minutes early for my shift."

In addition to being able to handle change, can you also recognize when change is required and be confident enough to present that to your organization? Talk to the interviewer about a time when you were able to suggest a change in the workplace.

"The store where I currently work is a family run shop where they operated based on trust and didn't have a loss prevention plan. We were having some problems with theft because of it. I suggested that we install a couple of cameras inside the store to deter anyone from stealing. So far, we have seen a 56% decline in the overall loss."

In your opinion and experience, what do you think makes Hobby Lobby successful?

"I love my community, and I make shopping decisions based on my knowledge of a company's commitment to the community. What I love about Hobby Lobby, and one of the reasons I think it's so successful, is that it's still privately-owned and operated -- which means that each store truly is invested in its own community while the company at large remains committed to the same organizations and ministries it's been donating to for years. To me, that shows stability and character, which are things that I and a lot of other consumers look for when making decisions about where to shop."

From its small beginnings as a custom frame-making shop in 1970, Hobby Lobby has grown to become the largest privately-owned arts-and-crafts retailer in the world. Based on what you know from spending time in Hobby Lobby stores and exploring their website, what do you consider to be the major reason for Hobby Lobby's success over the last 50 years?

"I've been a Hobby Lobby shopper for years, and I'm consistently amazed at how they manage to keep their prices so low. The fact that they treat their customers with enough respect to bring them great value and the lowest prices creates trust in customers, so they're more likely to return to the store for any craft-related needs. It's not just about the low prices; it's about the integrity and generosity they openly display as a business. It's a store that people want to shop at because they trust the actions and values of the company."

All Hobby Lobby locations are open Monday thru Saturday, 8 AM to 9 PM. Will your schedule accommodate shifts within these hours?

"I am happy to offer a flexible schedule, and to work overtime as needed. I do take an evening college course on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so I would not be available those days, after 5 PM."

All Hobby Lobby locations are closed on Sundays to allow employees a day of rest and time with their families. Let the interviewer know if you have any other commitments that may hinder your availability.

"I understand that this role will include working evenings, weekends, and holidays. I am available to work anytime and am happy to work overtime as well."

Take me through your experience in retail. What was the most challenging position you have held? Which was your favorite, and why?

"I have worked in retail for the past eight years. My most challenging position was with Company ABC. I found it so challenging because it was a different industry than I was accustomed. I learned a great deal during that time. This position was also my favorite because it was such a great challenge. I like to be pushed beyond my boundaries. It keeps me motivated to be better."

"I love the displays here -- they're always fun, imaginative, and inspiring! I particularly liked the Star Wars display you had in your downtown location a few months ago when the newest film came out. It was so cute! I would love to be a part of creating a display like that."
