If you could start your career over again, what direction would you take?

"I certainly do not regret the direction I have taken my career; however, if I had to completely start over in a new direction I would likely pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering and become an Engineer. Both of my parents were Engineers and they seemed to have a very fulfilling career. I enjoy analytics and research which I tend to do a lot of in my role as an educator. There is a free online course about Mechanical Engineering that I hope to enroll in soon."

A hiring manager will be able to tell a lot about your personality by learning about your other career interests. If you could do anything over, what would you do, and why?

"I am very satisfied with the direction my career has taken. If I could change anything I would perhaps have furthered my education to include a MBA. This is still something I hope to pursue in the future."

"I don't regret the direction my career has taken, but if I had to do it all over again, I would have gotten my Ph.D. before starting a family. Being in education for over 27 years and 7 of that in management, I see that there are more possibilities higher up in management if you have earned a Ph.D."

What questions do you have for me?

"Here are some sample questions: - When would you like to have this position filled? - How long has this role been vacant? - Is this a replacement search or a newly created role? - What is your favorite part about working here? - What is the facility's primary goal for this position in the next 12 months? - Is there anything from my background and experience that I can clarify for you? - What do you see as the biggest change in this industry over the past 3 years? - What is your most popular product this quarter? - How has the company changed in the past 10 years? - Is there any reason why you would not hire me?"

It's always a great idea to have questions ready for the interviewer. Review the company website and other online resources to ensure the questions you are asking are not mundane, or redundant. The last thing an interviewer wants to hear is a list of questions you could have found the answers to from a simple Google search.

"Thank you for asking - I do have a few questions. What do you think is the most important quality to have in the role? What will be the most challenging part of this position? In addition, what types of career growth opportunities would follow this position? And lastly, do you have internal candidates who are also interviewing for this position?"

"I appreciate the opportunity to ask.1. What type of professional development do you provide prior?2. Is professional development provided frequently to constantly improve our knowledge and skills?3. Would it be possible for me to speak to an existing coach to get a feel for what the position is like on a day-to-day basis?4. How soon are you looking to fill this position?5. Looking at my resume, is there anything I can clarify for you?"

Tell me something about yourself that I wouldn't know from reading your resume.

"I am an avid marathon runner and have traveled to 10 countries in the last 8 years to compete in a variety of races. My favorite country that I traveled to was Italy, I loved having fresh pasta after my race. I am a competitive individual, which makes sense of why I enjoy sales. I also think it's important to keep fit."

The interviewer would like to get to know you apart from what is written on your resume. You are certainly not obligated to discuss personal matters such as your kids, or relationship status, for instance. Stick with a couple of fun facts to show the interviewer that you are a real person, too. Your answer should be unique so that you are a memorable candidate! Focus on special non-work related skills or hobbies. For example, you might share that you enjoy beat-boxing or making origami swans. Be prepared for the interviewer to stop you and ask you to perform your skill on the spot when it's possible! (This will make you unforgettable!)

"I am bilingual in Spanish and have some proficiency in French and Italian, too. Once you learn one language, it is easier to learn a new one. I also am a huge Harry Potter fan and could pretty much quote each book to you!"

"I have always prided myself on "sharpening the saw" and challenged others that I have worked with to do the same. In order to facilitate others to do this, we must commit to improving ourselves and be proactive. I find that being honest with oneself about the events, deeply reflecting on how my actions played a part in the results, and determining how I can do better in a future situation. We must always we sharpening our saw so that we never become happy with mediocrity. We cannot expect greatness in others if we don't expect greatness in ourselves."

How do you handle stress on the job?

"I handle stress very well and when you call my references, they will attest to this fact. When I am under pressure on the job, I focus on the task at hand and make sure to not get distracted. I will stay late if I know that will decrease my stress the next day. Staying on deadline is very helpful and I will delegate when necessary to alleviate some stress."

Are you someone who is able to handle stress on the job? What do you do to remain calm and continue with the rest of your day? How do you manage the stressful times? Talk to the interviewer about your ability to manage pressure in the workplace.

"Stress is part of any demanding job and I embrace it to the fullest. I know that no matter what I have to do my best and be there for my team. Outside of work I take good care of myself personally and prioritize my workload to maintain a healthy balance in my stress levels. I am also not afraid to reach out for help from my coworkers when I need it, that's part of being a team."

"Being a principal, there is stress daily, usually on the days you thought you would get the most done. When faced with stress, I focus on putting first things - prioritizing my quadrant 2. That way when other matters that may be urgent arise, I have taken care of what is most important. If I find myself in a very stressful situation, I take a breath, try to understand the situation and those involved, and then take to process my next steps. I am not afraid to seek the support of others."

What are your salary expectations?

"Currently, I earn a base salary of $45,000 per year plus a potential 20% annual bonus as a Sales Executive. Last year my earnings were $52,000 and I would like to stay in the same range or slightly higher."

The best way to discuss your salary expectations are to use your current earnings as an example. Be open, and honest. Also do some research and see if you can find the range that they have budgeted for the position. Remember that transparency is the best choice when salary based questions arise.

"I am currently making $80,000 per year with full benefits and a 401K. I am looking for compensation that is aligned with the role and provides opportunity for growth."

"Currently, I am earning $140,000 a year with vision, dental, medical, and retirement. I am at the top of my pay scale. I rely solely on my income, so I am looking for something comparable with the opportunity to grow."

What does success mean to you? Tell the interviewer how you see success and be sure to tie your answer into the success that you plan to bring to this particular position, should you be offered the role.

"I define success by what we achieve as a team. The department, as a whole, needs to deliver on expectations before I consider anything a success."

As a team, we have identified our priorities, have a goal established based on these priorities, create a plan that is measurable, and synergize as a team to make this goal a reality. Do you think honesty is always the best policy?

"Sometimes full disclosure can damage someone's self esteem, and reality isn't always best expressed in full and can be self-indulgent based on the person's intention. In those instances, honesty isn't always the best policy. However, I find that most of the time you can be honest as long as you phrase it nicely."

"Honesty is always the best policy. Often times, it is just a matter of how you communicate and deliver your message so managing this with each situation is critical to building honest and trustworthy relationships. This has also helped me to build meaningful relationships with my coworkers."

"In the past few years I was able to upgrade my education while still working full time. The biggest skill that I gained was my ability to multi-task as I worked the dual role of employee and student. During this time I also learned how to better communicate with my team and improved my ability to quickly and efficiently research potential clients. "

"Spelling and grammatical errors are a pet peeve of mine. I will triple check my work if there is time! I feel that it is very important to submit error free work. I want to do my best to represent myself and my company."

"I encourage ideas in others by creating a safe and positive environment to share ideas in. When people feel supported and comfortable, they are willing to bring forward everything they've got."

Encouragement to others is a great skill to possess. It also helps create a sense of community in the workplace. Talk to the interviewer about your ability to encourage creative ideas in your team members.

"I encourage my employees to tap into the best parts of themselves. It helps to ask probing questions to get them to generate ideas on their own. If you paint a long term vision for where you want to go towards, you will be surprised at the creative solutions your team will come up with to get you there. When a team feels encouraged, they feel inspired to not only work hard but offer up innovative solutions."

"Honestly, I treat working with a team like working with a group of students. It is important to identify your priorities, set a goal and create measurable steps toward that goal. But none of this cannot be accomplished if you haven't first been proactive by building trusting relationships with those you are working with. The interviewer wants to see that you have strong listening skills. They want to see that you aren't the type to interrupt before hearing your co-workers out. When it comes to using your listening skills while receiving direction from your employer, asking for clarification can save you a lot of grief down the road! Show that you are one to check for full understanding when you are navigating new territory. Highlight to the interviewer that you are the type to attentively listen and troubleshoot problems in a collaborative style. Give an example that demonstrates how you avoided miscommunication by using your stellar listening skills!

"My supervisor is very brief in her communication and sometimes it creates confusion within the department. Last month she asked me to run a report on our sales for the western region. I wasn't entirely sure that I understood how she wanted the results presented. After she finished telling me what she was looking for, I repeated it back to her. I will often use qualifying questions such as, 'So what you're asking is...?' or 'Do you mean that you want me to do (X)?' This seems to avoid a lot of unnecessary problems down the road."

"I had just reread the _____ book on coaching literally the weekend before. The following week, I had to speak to a student that I see on a regular basis regarding his choices in the classroom. This student is usually combative with me when working through the situation, oftentimes leading me frustrated and no change made. This time, I implemented the strategies reviewed in the book: seeking to understand before being understood. This involved me being quiet as the student talked and not trying to solve the problem, but supporting the student to find their own solution. In the end, he was able to calmly explain to his teacher his choices and how she could better support him when he is feeling frustrated."

"If I were hired, I feel that I would complement your faculty in a few significant ways. First - I am a fast learner and I already bring 6 years' experience in the education industry. The time to train me will be reduced. Also, I have 2 years of sales experience and I am not afraid to put myself out there and connect with potential clients."

Due to a wide variety of personalities, relationships can take time to form. How do you ensure that you have a strong line of communication with your co-workers and supervisors, right from the start? The interviewer wants to picture how you will fit in with the team.

"I get along well with most personalities. I am a positive person which I find makes me more approachable. I enjoy becoming involved in post-work activities and continuing to be the social person that I am."

"Building that Speed of Trust when you are in a new job is vital to building positive, trusting relationships. I am a completely honest and transparent person. I show people I care through my actions. I not only talk the talk but walk the walk. I am in a constant cycle of reflection and taking ownership of my choices. Those who work with me know that my focus is on results. I listen to other's ideas and make sure they are heard. People know they can count on me to get things done. Tell me about your greatest work related accomplishment.

"The greatest accomplishment in my career was graduating University as an honors student while still working full time in a related field. I was top of my class, and working full time. This showed me that I am able to dedicate myself to my career, and reach the goals that I set for myself. I had to be super focused and make sacrifices like working on the weekends. It felt great to accomplish so much and be recognized for my dedication."

Talking about your greatest accomplishment will give the interviewer a strong idea of where you place your values. It will also show the interviewer more about your personality, how you like to be motivated, and how to coach you in the future. It is okay to brag a little bit when answering this question. Show that you are proud of yourself and your career accomplishments!

"I have many accomplishments that I am very proud of. Overall, I would say that my greatest work accomplishment is being the top sales rep in my department for the past 3 months. It feels great to know that my hard work and dedication to reaching my goals has paid off!"

"Most recently I have become President of our ACSA Chapter in my area. My focus was to bring awareness to the benefits of ACSA to administrators and provide PD opportunities that directly relate to what admins are being challenged with today. This year we grew our Chapter from roughly 20 members to almost 70 and have provided PD in relation to the retention of teachers and management. We had several community members join whom we are now partnered with to support these goals. We have brought awareness to district to work together to bring sustainable change with retention."

When have you had to adapt to change?

"I feel that as a facilitator I adapt to change on a daily basis! The vibe in every session I lead is different every day, employees moods and efforts vary as well. For example, leading a session before lunch is always challenging. I am well accustomed to working in a changing environment. I meet these challenges by adjusting my lesson if needed and incorporating exercises that get my audience energized."

Being able to adapt to change in the workplace is a very important skill to possess. Talk to the interviewer about a time when you have had to adjust to changes on the job. How did you handle the change? Was it a positive reaction? Why is being flexible important?

"After being a dedicated mathematics teacher for the past 10 years, I was asked to take on a new focus this coming year. I am currently prepping myself to teach chemistry as well. It's been a challenge but I am actually really excited for the change."

"This year we have had the biggest challenges with upper-grade behaviors of disrespect, entitlement, and using their voice inappropriately. We continued to work with students in the same manner we have done in the past with no sustainable change. It was important to finally look as a team at what we are doing, what is working and isn't, identify our main goal, and brainstorm further ideas. We had to think not as we had but with the lens of what our students bring to the table. By taking the time to listen to understand and then to be understood, we made changes based on what students identified as their own needs to be successful throughout the day."

Tell me about an organization or group outside of work that you contributed to.

"For the past 8 months I have volunteered every Wednesday evening at a local middle school. I am paired with a child who is struggling in school and I help them create a plan to be successful and encourage them to do their best. It's been a really fun experience and rewarding at the same time."

Many hiring managers will choose one candidate over another because of their volunteer experience. They feel that it shows strong character and selflessness...all qualities that make a great employee. Talk to the interviewer about your willingness to give back to your community in some form of volunteerism. If you do not have formal volunteer experience you can draw on things you do in your spare time to assist friends, family, or even your current employer.

"I have not formally volunteered in these most recent years, however; I spend a lot of time helping my sister who is a single mom. I will babysit on weekends, cook dinners for her and drive the kids to appointments when necessary. I feel that it is very important to take care of the needs of family."

"I work in HR and I currently lead an orientation course for all of our new employees. One thing that I think makes my course effective is employee involvement. I don't just talk at the employees, I ask them questions and get them involved with the material."

The interviewer wants to know that you are not only familiar with the training and education industry, but that you have your own thoughts on what can make a course excellent. If you have created a training course before share that. If you have taken an effective course before, share your experience.

"I remember reading '7 Habits of Highly Effective People' about 10 years ago, it was very inspiring. I really resonated with the habit that discussed being proactive. It is so important to not only stay on top of things but to always be working ahead."

It's important that you research FranklinCovey before applying for a position. One product that the company is most famous for is '7 Habits of Highly Effective People'. You don't have to say each habit verbatim for the interviewer but you should be somewhat familiar with it.

"Although I have not read the book, I did research the habits prior to this interview. I know that each habit is meant to help you be more effective such as the habit that discussed the importance to synergize with others in your department. FranklinCovey specializes in training employees and students how to be more effective, this book was the cornerstone to all of that."

"I read the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People during my administrative program along with other Stephen Covey books. My leadership team is doing a book study currently on this book in preparation for facilitating a book study next year for our entire staff. There are 7 habits that fall into three categories: dependence, independence, and interdependence. The goal of course is interdependence. Within the first phase are the most important habits: be proactive, begin with the end in mind, and put first things first. It is important to help people understand themselves before moving forward."

If you could be a subject matter expert in any subject of your choice, which would you choose?

"Ever since I was a child I have been fascinated with mechanics and design. I would build models of airplanes and cars in my room for hours at a time. I still have a very keen interest in design so I would say that if I could be a subject matter expert on any topic - I would choose mechanical engineering."

Talk to the interviewer about the topics that pique your interest the most. If you could immerse yourself in a particular subject, what would it be and why? You can make your answer a bit lighthearted and personal if you wish. The interviewer wants to a get a fuller picture of who you are.

"That's a great question! In my spare time I do a lot of reading on assessment and measurement. I would love to be seen as a subject matter expert in how to best create assessment items that are reliable and valid. It's all very fascinating to me."

One of our products includes on demand courses. What are your thoughts on online courses?

"I believe that both solutions can be effective depending on the end goal for the learners. For instance, if I want my learner to complete a brief course on on-boarding procedures, why not do it online? However, if you want a whole department trained on how to be more effective in the workplace, I think an onsite facilitator would be more beneficial ."

The topic of traditional face to face learning versus online learning a hot one! When you are asked to discuss a controversial topic in an interview it is best to avoid any offending statements or pushing any buttons. Give a rather cooled opinion on both sides and leave it at that. Remember that FranklinCovey offers both online and onsite solutions to their clients.

"I was really hesitant about online education 10 years ago. But my company has recently transferred all of our employee training to online and the results have been fantastic. At the end of the day I think the content is what makes for a great learning experience, not the delivery method."

"I have been in sales for the last 10 years and I know that it can be challenging at times. I currently lead a team of 6 sales reps. My team knows I am there for them and that I believe in them."

In our industry, your day may not be a typical 8AM - 4PM. Are you willing to work overtime and participate in extra-curricular activities?

"I am available to work most of the time, with some notice on overtime if possible. I understand that sometimes a deadline needs to be met and I will need to work extra to meet them."

The education industry is often in demand, even outside of typical business hours. If you have restrictions in your schedule, this is a great time to address those restrictions.

"I do take an evening course every Thursday so I would not be available for additional hours those days. Other than that, I am happy to make myself available as often as possible."

"I was raised to always respect others. I unfortunately think that is sometimes forgotten in the workplace. The best way to answer a question like this is to first research the company. The interviewer wants to know that you have researched and understand FranklinCovey's values. The interviewer also wants to see if your values align with the companies values. Brainstorm some examples that show how you respect others that you work with.

"I believe treating others with respect is the foundation to any great business and I am happy to know the FranklinCovey believes this as well. If each employee feels like a partner than they feel like they are part of a team and they are willing to help one another and do what it takes to reach their companies goals."

Tell me about a teacher, leader, or mentor who affected your life in a positive way.

"In my elementary years I had some trouble with reading. My grade 2 teacher was a very patient and kind person who went above her duties by giving me additional resources. Because she was generous with her time and efforts, I was exceeding grade level expectations in no time. In addition to catching up academically, I was able to gain a lot of personal confidence. She taught me that as leaders we must show generosity and kindness to those we work with."

When you work in the Education industry it is important to understand the difference that a strong leader and mentor can make in the life of a student. Talk to the interviewer briefly about someone who may have helped you along the way. Does anyone influential come to mind? What made them a great leader? What did you takeaway from the experience?

"I believe that every teacher and leader that I have had has played their own part in positively affecting my life. From a young age I have been lucky enough to have excellent mentors who wanted to invest in my future. Recently I was lucky to have a truly inspiring boss, she led by example and had an open door policy that made communication with our team much better."

"I graduated with a Bachelor's in Business Administration from the University of Oregon in 2008. My experience in that program was great! Even though I worked part time, I was still able to make the Dean's list, received a partial scholarship and graduated top of my class. I also gained invaluable skills from my internship with a local business where I worked in their sales department and learned how to cold call and close deals."

Your post-secondary education is likely listed on your resume; however, this is an opportunity to talk to the interviewer about your overall experience. Discuss any accolades and special recognition you may have received. You can also discuss a class, project or internship that impacted you the most during that time.

"In 2009 I completed my Bachelor's of Education and immediately followed that with a Masters' Degree in English. I am very proud of my educational background and am happy with the opportunities that this level of education has allowed me. I would love to continue this education down the road to include a Doctorate with a focus on Educational Assessment."

This is where you must disclose to the interviewer if you do not have a clean criminal background. Discuss with the interviewer your willingness to comply and be sure to disclose any pain points ahead of time. It is better they find any marks on your record directly from you!

"For example: "I am happy to comply with any criminal, financial, and educational related background check that you require. The majority will come back clean; however, I should disclose to you that I have a DUI charge from 7 years ago that may come up. I have been cleared of charges now and my drivers' license has been reinstated."
