"I hate the feeling of running late, and I do everything I can to avoid it. A few years ago on my way to work, my car got a flat and I was stranded on the side of the road. Of course, I immediately called my manager and explained my situation -- she was really nice about it, but I still felt terrible! Now I always have a plan B -- I learned how to change my tires myself, and I always have a spare."

"I love to ride my bike, so I always opt to use that for my primary transportation if I can. If the weather is really bad or I can't use my bike for some reason, I also have a car that is well-maintained. I've never been late for a shift, and you can count on me to always arrive to work 5-10 minutes before my shifts start."

"A few months ago, a customer came into the store to pick up an item she had ordered online -- but unfortunately, we couldn't find the item anywhere! The online ordering process was brand new at our company, so they were still working out the kinks on the corporate level; it turned out that the customer's order had been accidentally cancelled by the system. The customer was so patient while I made calls to our corporate offices and IT departments to figure out what had happened, and she was really gracious about the whole thing. After we figured out what had happened, I helped the customer place a new order and then offered her a coupon (with my manager's consent) for a discount on a future purchase. The customer was really pleased with the way we handled the situation."

"Last year, the store where I was working had a power outage because of a huge storm that came through, and everything was locked down -- including the electronic doors into and out of the store. I was the manager on duty at the time, so the first thing I did was check in with the other employees to make sure they were okay. I split the store into sections and had the employees go through and check on all of the customers. We didn't know how long the storm would last, so we offered all of the customers bottled water, set up a little area for the children to play in, and tried to make the experience as positive as possible. The power finally came back on after about an hour, and everyone was really happy. I even received some emails from some of the customers who were there that day thanking our team for their excellent service and quick-thinking."

"My favorite job was working at a career services shop many years ago. But there's nothing like being a part of turning someone's day around, which is what I always try to do. Even though the work itself would be different at Farmfoods, I think the same positive attitude and desire to make someone's day brighter could definitely apply to a retail assistant position here."

Tell me about your most recent visit to a Farmfoods store.

"I recently popped into my local Farmfoods to grab a quick meal for me and my partner, and what really stuck out to me was the customer service. Every single employee I walked past made a point to smile and offer a quick 'hello!' before going back to their tasks. It made me feel really welcome and comfortable -- I never felt pressured or hassled, and I left the store smiling. I was surprised by what a good impact it had on my day!"

I'm also a major optimist -- my mates always tell me that I can see the silver lining in any situation, even if I have to squint to find it."

I think kindness is the best policy -- putting kind, loving energy into the world and the workplace makes a huge difference in a customer's day, and in my coworkers' days as well! I also have a lot of really ambitious dreams for myself. I hope one day to be running a business of my own -- maybe even as a Branch Manager at Farmfoods!"

Some managers may have just ignored my weaknesses and played to my strengths, but she took the time to help me work on areas I wasn't so great at (like my communication skills -- I used to be so shy!) so that I would be set up for success in the future. I'll always be so grateful for her management style. I would love to work with a manager like her again."

She always pushed me to do better -- with her guidance, I outperformed my own expectations for myself. "Personally, I love the fact that Farmfoods has a small, hometown family feel -- as a mum, it makes me feel good to know that everything from the store layouts to the products themselves have been designed with families in mind. I'd love to work for a company that carefully considers how to best serve UK families."

"I've worked at larger corporations in the past, and I've never felt so invisible. I always felt like I was just a cog in a machine instead of a person with autonomy and real vested interest in the success of the company. Working for a family-run business like Farmfoods would be such a new, different experience for me; I'm excited about the chance to feel like a real member of a team instead of just a number. I think people do their best work when they feel seen and appreciated for their unique contributions."

What is one way that you think Farmfoods could improve?

"I think even the most successful businesses always have room for improvement! I love Farmfoods' focus on making grocery shopping quick, hassle-free, and affordable for its customers. I think one way to improve is to make it easy for customers to give you feedback. Maybe there's a way to send out customer surveys where the customer receives a small coupon for their feedback -- that way, the customer feels like they have a voice and have the added benefit of a small financial reward, and Farmfoods gets to hear directly from their customers how they can be doing better. It's a win-win!"

Based on what you know about Farmfoods, do you see any room for improvement?

"I think it could be cool to have a community outreach event -- maybe a benefit with proceeds going to a community organization that could use some help. I think that could be a good way of bringing new customers into the store to find out more about what makes Farmfoods different, and it would show how invested Farmfoods is in our community."

How do you like to be recognized for your accomplishments?

"At my last job, we really worked as team -- we had a board up in the break room where we all decided on a weekly goal together and strategized ways to work together to accomplish it. At the end of the month, we had quick meetings to go over what we did well and how we could improve, and I found that to be really motivating and encouraging! We usually picked one stand-out team member who we felt went above and beyond for that month, and that person got a small gift card. It was great to have the opportunity to get a little recognition and financial reward, but the camaraderie I felt with the team was an even bigger benefit."

"As a current university student, my weekly schedule is very consistent and I am available to work any hours in the evening after class. To start out, I'm hoping to work about 15 hours per week with the option to increase my hours in the future if it seems manageable."

"I have three school-aged kids, so I'm available to work anytime from morning until school is out mid-afternoon every weekday. I also have a flexible schedule on the weekends, so I'm available to pick up shifts on Saturdays and Sundays as well."

What do you think will be the biggest challenge for you if hired at Farmfoods?

"I've never worked in a retail or grocery position before, so I'm nervous and excited about the chance to get started! I can be kind of shy at first, but I've been working hard to improve my confidence lately and be more outgoing. I think a job at Farmfoods will help me practice my communication skills and up my confidence -- I'm ready to dive into the challenge!"

"One of the things that stands out to me about Farmfoods is that they trust their workers to have integrity and to take responsibility for themselves and their team. When my employer puts that kind of trust in me, I automatically want to do the best job possible. During my exit interview at my last job, my manager told me that she really appreciated my diligence and honesty. I have a reputation for always doing the right thing, even when it's hard or uncomfortable. Obviously, I have never stolen cash or merchandise from a store or from my place of work."

"First, I would let my manager know that I'm available to stay later than my assigned shift if they need help covering for the worker who didn't show up. If the absent coworker was on their way, I'd offer to stay until they arrived. If it seemed that the person was probably not going to be working at Farmfoods any longer, I'd make sure my manager knew that I was available to work some extra hours until a new retail assistant was hired. I want to do my part to make sure my team keeps running smoothly, even in the midst of unexpected changes."

"Last year, I was working at the register at a small shop when an irate customer came in. She was raving and shouting -- it was a very overwhelming situation! I did my best to really listen to everything she was saying so that I could understand the root of her issue. I told her how sorry I was that she had had such a bad experience and assured her I would do everything I could to make it right. I remained calm and collected, and she started to calm down, too. It turned out that it was just a misunderstanding, and the problem was easily resolved."

"On my very first day at a new job a few years ago, an extremely upset customer came into the store. I was really taken off guard, but luckily my manager was right there. I got to see how she handled the situation: by being extremely understanding and sympathetic, acknowledging that the customer's frustrations were valid, and showing the customer that her satisfaction was our highest priority. Since then, I've had to deal with my fair share of upset customers, but I have a great base to work from because I got to see how my manager handled that situation."

"First and foremost, I'm an incredibly friendly, positive person. In my opinion, being kind and making others feel welcome and comfortable is one of the most important things a retail worker can do. One thing that makes me a unique employee is that I love to be a member of a team and at the same time am a very independent worker who's self-motivated. I believe that a team is only as strong as its individual members, so I always strive to do my best as an individual so I can support my team. Finally, I really enjoy solving problems -- whether it's figuring out the best way to organize products or discovering the most efficient way to clean an area of the store, my brain loves puzzles and works through the options very quickly."

"My biggest pet peeve is walking into a store where the merchandise isn't where it's supposed to be -- it's so frustrating! I have a bit of a habit of straightening merchandise while I'm grocery shopping or running errands. Needless to say, I'll be on top of keeping the merchandise at the store very organized and displayed in a way that helps customers easily locate what they're looking for."

"I personally love the idea of wearing a uniform to work. My primary school had uniforms, so I feel comfortable with the idea of wearing one to work as well."

How are your math skills? Do you have any experience working a Point of Sale system and cash register?

"I had a retail job while I was in school, so I have some general knowledge of the way that POS systems work. I've always loved math, so it should be easy for me to perform any math-related tasks around the store!"

Part of your responsibilities as a retail assistant will be handling customer transactions at the register. "First and foremost, I would make sure the customer was okay and uninjured! I'd make sure to take care of any cuts or scrapes as quickly as possible. If everyone was okay, I'd assure the customer that the broken item wasn't a huge concern -- accidents happen to everyone from time to time, and I would make sure the customer left the store feeling like their safety and comfort was a priority. And then of course I'd clean up the aisle as soon as I could!"

"I've had dispute-resolution training in my previous retail positions, so I have a good base for dealing with customer complaints. As a general rule, I think it's most important that customers feel heard and understood when they have an issue with one of their purchases. I know that Farmfoods has a terrific training programme for new employees, so I'm really looking forward to learning the Farmfoods approach to handling customer complaints and issues."
