"I would describe my work style as highly team-based. I keep in mind that my pace, quality of work, and the outcome will always affect multiple people on my team. If I am unsure of the path to take on a project, I will consult with my team to ensure that my ideas align well with theirs."

Would your former or current boss describe you as a worker who gladly goes the extra mile to complete their tasks?

"Going the extra mile is something that I deliver, and expect from my team. When everyone puts in 100% of their energy into a project, incredible things can happen. When you call my references, they will most certainly discuss my dedication to my work."

You can say that you will go the extra mile, but it's best to give a real-life example to the interviewer about a time when you did just that. "Thank you for asking! For me, a flexible and a moveable workspace are all factors that allow me to be at my most creative. For instance, in my current role, we can start late and stay late, or come in early to have a quiet coffee and get our day going. Also, I do not have one specific desk. Our workspaces flow throughout the office."

"Thank you for asking! I would say by allowing 1 of 1 experience. Not everything works for every artist. Some artists and some projects need that 1 of 1 approach and strategy that may not have been done before, but if it makes sense for the artist brand then I think empowering the new, fresh, innovative ideas are the only way to lead the way creatively in any industry but especially the music industry."

What decisions did you routinely make in your last position?

"I routinely make decisions around hiring, career advancement, associate development, and talent management. I am very comfortable in these areas."

The interviewer would like to know more about the types of decisions you are accustomed to making in the workplace. The way you answer this question will give Capitol Records a good idea of your level of experience, seniority, and ability to handle the decision-making requirements in this possible position. What type of situation would make you quit your job?

"Earlier in my career, I quit my job because the work environment was highly toxic. The manager would gossip about other employees, and the owner of the company would scream and yell at everyone. I found a new position quickly and do not regret that situation."

The interviewer would like to know what type of situation would cause you to quit your job, so they can assess how patient you are and what your threshold for stress may be. If you have ever quit a job before, you can discuss the situation but avoid speaking poorly of any employer in the past. Make sure that your example is one that could be justified easily. You want to avoid appearing dramatic or oversensitive.

"For me to quit my job, the situation would need to be dire. I have a strong tolerance for stress and can work with a wide variety of personalities. I would quit a job if there were some inappropriate activity such as ongoing harassment or if the work was unsafe."

"I have a high tolerance for stress, high-pressure situations, and quick turnaround times so for me to quit a job it would really have to be something foul happening. Whether it be some form of harassment, danger, or illegal activities those are all things that would make me quit a job."

When entering a new job, describe how you build relationships with your new coworkers and supervisors.

"I like to ask my new colleagues for their best tips on how to succeed in my new environment, and also what they are currently working on. Creative types like to bounce ideas off of others which makes these two questions a very effective way to get to know others in the music and entertainment industry."

The interviewer would like to know how you plan to start relationships with your new co-workers at Capitol Records. Due to a wide variety of personalities, coworker connections can take time to form. How do you ensure that you have an active line of communication with your co-workers and supervisors, right from the start? Here are some ideas for getting started on the right foot: - Be willing to accept feedback and help - Offer to join a committee or volunteer assistance in some way - Do not have an air of entitlement or act as though you know the ins and outs immediately - Avoid all company gossip, at all cost - Be thankful for the equipment that you have. "Warner Music has approached me, and one other, to discuss similar roles. I am most familiar with Capitol Records, and this is my preferred role. Do you have a timeline in mind for this decision?"

The interviewer would like to know if you are visiting any of Capitol Record's close competitors to discuss similar roles. You are never obligated to disclose who you are interviewing with, and you are usually best not to name any names. Be direct without giving away too much. Let the interviewer know that you are active in your search but are being very discerning regarding your applications, and final decision. You also do not want it to appear that you are putting all of your eggs into this one basket. Think of this as a first date question - you want to show your interest, but also keep some mystery!

"The music and entertainment world is a tight one so, for that reason, I am choosing to keep the details of my search confidential. Three other labels have approached me, and look forward to receiving an offer soon."

"I know the music industry is very tight-knit, and out of respect, I'm choosing to keep the details of my search confidential. There are other labels that have reached out to me as well as other companies that I am speaking with."

What is your dream job?

"My dream is to be a marketing director for Capitol Records or even another Universal Music Group label. To get there, I am committed to continued education, taking courses on leadership, and gaining more project management experience. I see that your label has a multitude of paths available to reach a goal like this one, which is very exciting to me."

This question can be a bit tricky to answer since you don't want to give a reply that will make you seem like a bad fit for this role. A general rule of thumb, if it isn't related to your current career path, you probably should not mention it in an interview. It's fun to think about off-the-wall dreams like becoming a dolphin trainer, but an interview is not the time to express those dreams. Instead, focus on what you aim to gain from a career with Capitol Records. Perhaps you see yourself in that shiny corner office, or you want to work your way into a talent agent role, jet-setting all over the country to give presentations and perform essential negotiations. "I am looking to make my way into an executive assistant position. Supporting your c-suite would be a dream position for me, and I look forward to earning my way into a role like this with your organization."

"Honestly, this is my dream job. I really believe I was born to do this job. Blending fashion with music and strategy... it doesn't get any better than that. The only position huger would be a senior-level role in the same field, but trust me this is the dream job. Especially for a legendary label like Capitol."

Have you ever worked in a situation where the rules and guidelines were not clear? How did you cope?

"I worked for a small family-owned label for a while. Most processes were not formally written down or included in my onboarding training. I made it my project to create 'what-if' scenarios, get answers from the owners, and compile a troubleshooting list to work from."

The interviewer at Capitol Records wants to know how you go about achieving goals when you lack explicit instruction from your manager or company. Part of the point of this interview question is to find out where your moral compass lands when company rules are not clear. Give the interviewer an example of a time when you had to cope with very few guidelines.

"I've had a position where the company had clear guidelines and procedures; however, the manager didn't follow the rules and instead implemented her own. This situation was not only odd but also tricky. To please my boss, I had to follow her rules but to move up in the company and please corporate; I had to follow theirs. Ultimately, I found an excellent middle ground that kept me productive, my boss happy with my productivity, and was presumably pleasing corporate. I later moved to a different department. All that to say, I'm comfortable in awkward, figure-it-out situations, and can find a way to succeed and keep all parties happy, no matter what the parameters."

"All the time. Dealing with 3rd parties, independent contractors, freelancers, talent, and production things are always unclear. I coped by communicating the best way that I could and making sure everyone is on the same page. Another example is when I was a routing technician for Comcast cable. Being responsible for technicians' meeting appointments; I had to learn the entire job on the fly. Some days technology didn't work but I still found ways to communicate with the customer and technicians to solidly the best service possible."

When have you faced an unexpected difficulty?

"One of the biggest unexpected difficulties came when both my boss and my direct report left within the same week for a new opportunity. I had half of my team but the same amount of workload to bear. I was able to use my leadership skills to pull another teammate on board for our project, and worked extra hours at home to pick up the slack. I was able to finish the client proposal in the same amount of time with fewer hands on deck and land one of our largest clients to date. It was certainly a learning experience and proved that I could do anything I set my mind to, with a bit of help from my team."

How you face unexpected difficulty can say a lot about your character. Talk to the interviewer about a time when you have encountered stress in the workplace. Show that you are capable of professionally handling the unexpected situations that may arise at Capitol Records.

"Unexpected situations happen very often in my current position. For instance, just last week, we had major changes in industry regulations which changed how we could invoice our clients. I worked overtime with the Accounts Receivable department to ensure we complied with the change. It was stressful, but we made it happen."

"Honestly, not to sound morbid but the last decade has been filled with unexpected difficulties. From hitting the game-winning shot to lead us to the district championship and breaking my knee in the championship game, to losing my father a month before the launch of my business, creatives stealing my intellectual property and profiting off of it, and dealing with the everyday struggles of being an entrepreneur. Unexpected difficulties are an expectancy at this point. It's about building time and capacity for such difficulties because life will always life. But based on my experience nothing can really phase me at this point because there's not much I haven't seen when it comes to difficulties. But it's about turning difficulties into opportunities. Wherever there's a problem, there's also seeds of opportunity"

Describe an ongoing problem at your current or former employer, that you were able to overcome.

"An ongoing issue in our marketing department was a lack of funds allocated to the projects that our board had already approved. It seemed as though they wanted us to perform miracles with very little financial support. To overcome this, we created a catchy new hashtag, and it ended up going viral on Instagram. Luckily we did not have to spend funds to make this happen, and we were able to promote our product to an audience much larger than we thought possible."

Every place of employment has its challenges, and Capitol Records is no different. Talk to the interviewer about a specific issue that you were able to overcome in your previous role. Be sure to remain positive. Avoid complaining or saying negative things about your last employer or co-workers.

"Clear communication was an ongoing problem in our office when I first started as an intern. With the support of management, the use of Microsoft Project, and a weekly status email template, I helped them quickly overcome the communication issues. All five of our departments are now talking to each other instead of pointing fingers."

"An ongoing problem for me was the production of clothing products. Things seemed to always be late with the current manufacturer, causing delays, loss of time, money, energy, and morale. I created a system that timed everything out and gave the production team more than enough time to do their job and even built-in an extra 2 weeks just in case something happened. Communication with production was a huge part of that strategy. Also, empathy toward production allowed me to deepen the relationship with production that allowed them to want to go above and beyond for us."

With which sector of the music and entertainment industry are you least experienced?

"When it comes to the music and entertainment industry, unions, and guilds are the areas where I am least experienced. I am aware that many artists are part of a union; however, I am not entirely sure how those union agreements impact the work done here at Capitol Records. I am eager to learn the inner workings of topics such as this."

Similar to, 'What is your greatest weakness?', this question asks you to disclose the area where you are the least knowledgeable. It's essential that you highlight the area where you are least experienced while still showing the interviewer that you are confident in your ability to learn.

"I am least experienced when it comes to entertainment law both locally and internationally. I have performed some research and read many articles; however, I feel it will take more dedication from me to grasp the complexities of entertainment law."

"The sector of the music and entertainment industry I'm least experienced in is publishing rights and contracts. I understand the standards of artists' masters and how that conversation goes, but not on the standards of publishing. I'd like to learn more about not only the standards of music publishing but recording contracts overall."

What do you think about the future of record labels?

"I believe that record labels are a must for any serious artist and, because of that, companies like Universal Music/Capitol Records will be around for a long time. What we will be doing is pivoting our focus more digitally than we ever have before. The competition will continue to be fierce when it comes to online and social marketing efforts for artists; however, I am ready and prepared to bring the ingenuity and grit that it takes to remain a stand-out in the entertainment industry."

Since you are interviewing at Capitol Records, it would be in your best interest to be prepared with some positive statements on record labels and their future outlook. Record companies have been around since the dawn, but there has been a lot of chatter regarding their footing in the entertainment industry. Speak to the interviewer about where you believe record labels will be, in the future.

"I see record labels relying less on dollars for records sold and more on royalties from streaming services, merchandise, and endorsements. I also foresee changes when it comes to ownership of intellectual property. Artists have more tools available to them to control outcomes now - many more than they had in the 1990s for instance. In the future, I see a healthier collaboration between record labels and their artists."

"I think that although there has never been this amount of competition for labels as a whole as there is now with streaming and the internet, I do believe that labels, specifically the big 3 will always have a secured place in the culture. There will always be artists that need that marketing push, that distribution handled, and budgets to create. Universal just secured that deal with Tik Tok as an example. We've seen record labels evolve for about 80 years now and stay relevant, I don't think that changes now."

Name three artists you believe will have a breakthrough this year.

"Three artists under Capitol Records whom I believe will have a breakthrough this year include {list some hot new artists}. The marketing efforts put into their latest releases and the fact that they have had successful collaborations with other artists on your label are strong indicators of future success."

The interviewer wants to see that you follow the music industry and that you have a genuine interest in what they do at Capitol Records. If possible, come prepared to discuss artists from this particular label. This type of example will show the interviewer that you have done your homework on their company and who they represent.

"The artists that have caught my eye this year include {list some hot new artists}. I think it's great that Capitol Records has put a lot of emphasis on finding new and diverse talent throughout multiple musical genres. I look forward to seeing these artists flourish in their careers."

"3 artists at Capitol that I believe will have a break out year is #1 Masego. His music has been topping itself more and more and his features are increasing as well. Also, he's probably in the top 10% talent-wise. 2nd would be Queen Naija, I believe so because she's been super consistent since she's dropped and she has a solid understanding of her brand as an artist. Just a matter of time and having that right song. #3 is Blue Bucks Clan, being from LA they've got the whole west coast behind them and heavy features/co-signs from Quavo already."

How would you market an artist when you do not enjoy their work?

"I understand that not everyone at Capitol Records will like absolutely every talent that is signed. That's just part of the job, and it's good to have preferences when it comes to taste in music. That's part of what makes us unique. If I were asked to market an artist whom I did not particularly enjoy, I would work just as hard to market and promote them as if they were my all-time favorite. Through the process, I would likely develop a new appreciation for the work!"

Without explicitly discussing any artists that you do not care for, try talking more about the approach you would take if Capitol Records asked you to help market them. Setting your musical tastes or personal preferences aside, would you work hard to ensure this artist got the most out of their record deal?

"My personal preferences would never have an impact on how hard I would work for an artist signed with Capitol Records. Whether I enjoy their work or not, it's my job to help them succeed, create profit opportunities for the label, and operate at 100% capacity every day."

"I would do my best job of entering into that artist's world and understand what concepts and messages the artist is looking to covey. I would also figure out what the theme of the artist or project is and figure out how to creatively take those concepts further. Lastly, I would get an understanding of the fan and figure out what they like, anticipate, and have yet to see. I would then combine all of those strategies into a well-thought-out rollout/marketing strategy."

How does your post-secondary education apply to the music and entertainment industry?

"I have a Masters' in Law and Entertainment which gave me top-notch industry knowledge from the start of my career. The courses I took helped me to develop skills in short and long-term strategic planning in this competitive industry. I also learned a great deal about project management, performing arts, and cultural entrepreneurship."

The interviewer would like to know more about your post-secondary education, and how it will benefit Capitol Records, should you be hired. Expand on what you already have laid out on your resume and be prepared to discuss how particular coursework will translate well into this role. If you bring post-graduate work experience, give examples of how your education has helped you succeed in your career up to this point. If you are a recent graduate, you could choose to discuss one or two classes that equipped you with skills you can apply to this job.

"I recently completed a series of courses geared for entertainment management and artist relations. These courses will round out my Business Law degree, offering me a balanced perspective on entertainment and the law. I look forward to applying what I have learned in this role with Capitol Records."

"My post-secondary education applies directly toward the music and entertainment industry because that's essentially the industry I've been affiliated with most honestly. Fashion goes hand and hand with music and entertainment. They are similar because there's a lot of independent variables that all need to line up and work together in order for a launch to be successful. What are your career goals in the next 3-5 years with Capitol Records?

"In the next few years I would like to move into a more serious leadership function. In my current company, there is little room for growth which is why I feel that working for Capitol Records would fit into my long-term career goals. I want to work for you and grow into a leadership role with your organization."

Assure the interviewer that you are interested in forging a long-term career with them by discussing the career path you foresee if hired. What are your career goals and how do you hope to achieve them, with Capitol Records?

"5 years from now, I would like to be supervising or managing a team of my own. I feel like I am progressing at a rate that will make this a possibility."

"My career goal in the next 3-5 years is to elevate to a senior-level marketing director role at Capitol records this current position is a perfect place for me and my current experience which I believe will allow me to learn and grow my skills and position myself to take on more responsibility and work to eventually land me in a senior level director role for marketing or even brand strategy."

Who are considered the 'Big 3' record labels, and how does Capitol Records compete?

"Sony BGM, Warner Music and Universal Music make up the 'Big 3' in the music industry. I believe that the best way Capitol Records and Universal competes with their competitors is to work hard to sign the worlds' most celebrated artists to their core label. This approach includes being competitive when it comes to what you offer the artist. Also, working hard to scout hot new talent is a significant factor in your ability to remain ahead of your competitors."

The 'Big 3' record labels include: - Sony BMG - Universal Music Group - Warner Music Group These three record labels own nearly 80% of the music market. Since you are interviewing for Capitol Records, a sub-label of Universal Music Group, be prepared to discuss the other competition. How do they compete with each other to have the best talent in the music and entertainment industry?

"The big three record labels are Sony BGM, Warner Music Group, and Universal Music Group. Together, these three hold 80% of the music market. The best way to remain competitive is to continue gaining access to the world's core talent and signing them to your primary label. The second part of this strategy is to be the first to find and sign hot new talent."

"The big 3 are Warner, Sony, and Universal music. Capitol competes under the Universal umbrella and remains effective by signing new and exciting talent that continues to elevate the current course of music."

Talk about a recent entertainment campaign that caught your eye.

"I believe that the best marketing campaigns are ones where the artists meet their fans where they are. One example of this that I find unforgettable is DJ Khaled's use of Snapchat. Here, he talks about his path to happiness which has made him a voice in internet culture. Aside from his music, Khaled is now known for his catchphrases like 'I appreciate you' and 'You the best.' His loyal following has remained and he continues to broaden his reach."

Capitol Records puts big dollars into marketing and promoting their artists. The interviewer wants to see that you understand the difference between a mediocre campaign and an effective one. Think about the latest entertainment advertisement that you saw, heard, or witnessed. Why did it catch your eye, and what made it so memorable. Be sure to show the interviewer your enthusiasm for marketing and promotions.

"One campaign that has stuck with me is one from Lee Scott, a hip-hop artist from the UK. When he dropped his album, he first released an exclusive premium version to 100 fans. Later, he created an exclusive bundle pack and charged even more for the next 100 fans. Lastly, upon general release, he charged premium rates by including merchandise into the packs. This slow-release strategy picked up a lot of PR and created a great amount of anticipation among his fan base."

"It's been tough because of Covid, there hasn't been a lot that's been able to be done compared to pre-covid times but some that stuck out in my mind were the Travis Scott X Fortnite virtual performance and product collab. I would also say Teyana Taylor's engaging album release party sure diff parts of the house were themed out in reference to diff themes of the album and everyone was sent hazmat suit in order to ensure safety. I thought that was really creative while still making safety a priority."

What is your favorite source for entertainment news and industry updates?

"First and foremost, I follow Capitol Records on Twitter for important live updates on what's happening in music entertainment news. I also follow a lot of top artists on Instagram, and I read Billboard magazine regularly. I fully understand the importance of being up to date on entertainment news and industry happenings."

The interviewer wants to see that you have a thumb on the beat of what's happening in the music industry. Capitol Records needs to hire people who are curious and want to know what's going on minute-to-minute, always knowing which trends and topics to follow. Discuss how you remain up to date in the industry by mentioning a few different tools and resources.

"My top sources for entertainment news are all of the music awards! I watch the Billboard Music Awards, American Music Awards, the Grammy's, the MTV Music Awards and more. Also, I follow many top artists and labels on social media which provides me with up to the minute entertainment news."

"Overall I'd say social media. I follow a variety of new music, and entertainment news platforms like variety, hot new hip hop, billboard, but if I had to pick one source it would be @rap on Instagram as my favorite source."

Why do you want to work with Capitol Records?

"I have had my eye on a potential role with Capitol Records for a couple of years now. This application is my third application to Capitol Records in three years. It's important to me that I join a label that has a world-class reputation and offers unlimited opportunity for growth. The fact that your training is known globally as some of the best training in the industry is reasoning enough for me to pursue this opportunity eagerly."

There is a lot of competition for roles with Capitol Records. Come to your interview very prepared to discuss why you want to work for them, specifically. Perhaps it's their renowned training, the talent they represent, their reputation, or an experience you have had with an employee of their company. Whatever your response is, be sure to exude enthusiasm for this opportunity.

"The Beatles and Paul McCartney are legends in the music industry, and I am aware that Capitol Records represents them. I believe that being the agent for longstanding talent says all that I need to know about your reputation and ability in this industry. I want to learn from, and work for, the best."

"Capitol is the elite record label in my opinion when it comes to history, productivity, and relevance. To be continuously pushing music farther for almost 80 years is incredible, to say the least. "I like to hear about new artists through a variety of resources. First, I subscribe to the Capitol Records blog where I get articles and information on newly signed talent and up and coming artists. I have been a long-term reader of Billboard magazine as well."

"When we were speaking earlier, about sales targets in this position, you mentioned that most new sales professionals hit their KPI's after 120 days. If hired today, my goal would be to exceed my KPI's after the first 90 days. I plan to make a positive impact very quickly."
