"When I start a new job, I learn my supervisor's communication style and do my best to copy it. That way, we have a better chance of understanding each other. If I was still missing information that I needed, I would approach my supervisor directly and ask about it. I've found that a direct approach is the best way to avoid miscommunication."

"When I work with a team, I tend to take on a leadership position. I'm a go-getter, and when there's a project in front of me, I step up to get things done. I'm usually pretty good at determining others' skills and talents, which makes me a good delegator, and I know how to look at the big picture and figure out how all the pieces fit together."

Tell me about yourself.

"I graduated high school last year and am now a freshman in college studying IT. I'm looking for a job that could serve as an introduction to the field, and I think Best Buy fits that role perfectly. I'd like to stay with Best Buy throughout my college years before moving on to a job in IT. I'm a straight-A student and have been interested in computers my whole life. I've built two of my own. In my spare time, I love playing video games, and I just recently joined my college's intermural volleyball team."

"I have a lot to offer Best Buy's customers regarding computers, tablets, phones, and other smart devices and appliances. I have a lot of experience working on those devices and am very comfortable answering questions about them and providing tech support. However, my video game knowledge is lacking. I didn't grow up playing video games, so I don't have experience with different consoles and games. That said, I know Best Buy sells consoles and games, and, if hired, I will likely work in that department at some point. I've already started exploring different video game consoles and becoming familiar with how they work. Several of my friends play video games regularly, and I've asked them to teach me how to play their games on their consoles. It's been a lot of fun, and I plan to continue learning more from them so I can be just as knowledgeable in this area as I am in others."

To work on this, I've started limiting myself to one-sentence answers when a customer asks me a question. Then, I ask the customer if they need more information. What recent or upcoming technology are you excited about?

"I have been reading a lot recently about AI-generated content. There have been amazing leaps in that area, so much so that many industries are struggling to keep up with it. I'm excited about the advances, and I look forward to seeing how AI can be used productively."

"I'm a very cool-headed, even-tempered person, so I don't panic when unexpected things happen on my way to work. I recently had a flat tire on my way into the store where I currently work, but I always leave for work earlier than necessary. I called my manager as soon as I could and let her know what was going on, and then I changed my tire. I only ended up being about fifteen minutes late for my shift, and it was no big deal because I had let my manager know what was going on."

What do you hope to learn from this job?

"I hope to lay the foundation for the rest of my career with this position. I looked at a lot of job postings and interviewed with some very carefully selected places, but you are by far my front-runner. I want to learn not only the fundamentals of sales but also become comfortable with both sides of the business. I appreciate that you want me to start with the basics of inside sales before moving into outside sales."

"I have worked in retail for the past eight years. My most challenging position was with Company ABC. I found it challenging because it was a different industry than I was accustomed to. I learned a great deal during that time. This position was also my favorite because it was such a great challenge. I like to be pushed beyond my boundaries. It keeps me motivated to be better."

"I don't think it's ever okay to treat a customer with disrespect, even if the customer isn't respectful toward me or my coworkers. Everyone has bad days, but integrity means treating every customer with the same kindness, respect, and service. If a customer was directly rude to me, I would continue to be friendly and hospitable but would probably give the customer a little space so they felt more comfortable."

Angry and rude customers are a sad reality that retail workers face every day.
