What experience are you most proud of?

"Even though I am still in school, I was asked to audit a business. They were a small business run by a friend of the family, who thought it would be good practice for me. When I started the audit, their numbers didn't sit right with me. They used vendors for everything, including warehousing, trucking, and delivery. As I examined all the hidden costs and all the overhead these vendors were charging, I realized it was far more cost effective to lease a small fleet of box trucks and ship directly off-premises. When I told them, they expressed concern about hiring drivers, but I suggested they hire independent contractors. They saved thousands, and their business was streamlined, resulting in more reliable service and increased profits."

When thinking of an example to share, remember the qualities they are looking for in a candidate. "My colleagues have repeatedly told me that I am too honest, and it's true. I recognize the value of being a bit more filtered, exhibiting more discretion rather than being so transparent all the time. But I pride myself on being a highly ethical professional. And although my candor could sometimes be more strategic, I am well-liked and trusted by my colleagues and clients alike, who know they can always count on me to do the right thing."

"I think fast, act fast, and set my sight on what I aim to achieve. Most often, others on my team deliberate and discuss the best approach long after I have already dived in. My motto is to think on the go. There is always some basic work to be accomplished, no matter what approach you may choose. Just get started and get your hands dirty, and you'll have a better read of the landscape. So, I think fast, I work fast, I work smart, and I put my all in. And, since I am good at what I do, I have fun doing it and am rarely stressed."

"I would say that one of my greatest strengths is how team-oriented and collaborative I am. I often take the lead but maintain open and transparent communication with everyone, ensuring every voice is heard. My attitude has earned me the nickname of QB, for quarterback. I especially enjoy helping others further their skills and attain new levels of success. I look forward to a nickname promotion of "Coach," hopefully in the near future."

Rather than ask you about your greatest strength, this interview question reflects the language of their company culture and identity. "If I succeed in meeting the goals in my five-year career plan, I'd like to make senior manager. I know with my current experience that may seem ambitious, but considering that Bain and Company advertise that they have a steep learning curve for those who are super driven, I believe that I can achieve the extraordinary."

How you answer this question will reveal how career driven and ambitious you are or if you are happy cruising along, maintaining the status quo. It could also offer insights into your job satisfaction and whether this is the right career choice for you. Describe a role where you changed the direction of a team. How did you do it?

"We were working with a small grocery store with an ambitious expansion plan. After auditing their business, our teams worked on where to expand. Our team leader suggested several cutbacks to justify the budget required to open several new storefronts. But, after looking at their culture, I saw several growth opportunities there and felt that we could make their company culture go viral. So, I instead suggested a more modest immediate expansion plan and suggested placing greater emphasis on employee satisfaction, offering more financial perks and incredible benefits and growth opportunities. I suggested that if we focused on making it a fun place to work and attracted recruits from everywhere, we would be better positioned to staff those new locations when we were ready. Not to mention making it a more fun place to shop. The profits would then be funneled back into the business. My supervisors loved my approach and adopted it, and everything unfolded as I predicted for the company over the next ten years."

But if your suggestion for a better path forward is embraced, all the better.

"I take great pride in my communication skills, whether through emails or reports, verbal or through presentations. I am proud of what I do as a professional and find happiness in my career. It is my purpose to spread professional joy."

"I thankfully have never unintentionally, nor intentionally, for that matter, violated the confidentiality or trust of my clients or employers. Integrity is my core value, and I take such things very seriously."

"I would say so. I rarely post on social media. When I do, it is tasteful and reflective of my character."

What they may or may not have found regarding your social media presence could inform them of how well you would effectively be able to represent their brand. "If the situation proved appropriate, I would follow the chain of command and report it to my immediate supervisor. However, if a supervisor exhibited questionable behavior, I would follow the guidelines for an alternate approach, whether through HR or a hotline. I have a lot of integrity and know that doing the right thing isn't always easy, but I take pride in doing my job and adhering to the code of conduct, and following through on my commitments is part of the job."

"I am a people person, and the more interesting you are as a person, the more I want to learn about you and from you. Having multiple interesting perspectives is extremely important to me. Besides, how can you build upon a strong work culture if it doesn't have a diverse culture behind it?"

"I have a 4.0 GPA, graduated at the top of my class, and led and created several clubs. I have several letters of recommendation from different professors and am excited about the opportunity for this internship."

You've likely laid out the bare bones of your educational background on your cover letter and resume. This question offers you an opportunity to provide context to your experiences in school and beyond. Additionally, you'll want to answer this question in a manner that shows you exceed their requirements. Although Bain and Company does quite a bit of recruiting for those still in college, they look for capable and qualified people from all fields. "It is important to us to have a mix of different academic backgrounds in our firm, so we can provide clients with consulting services at a high level of expertise."

What experience do you wish you could do over? How would you do it differently?

"At my last job, I was proud to be hired but was overconfident in my abilities. I came on board anxious to contribute and wanted to fix everything. Yet, what I was trying to fix wasn't broken, and my approach was seen as aggressive and presumptuous. This rubbed a couple of my new team members the wrong way and made a bad first impression. I never had the best working relationship with one of these people. I've learned since to be transparent with them, asking questions and learning the lay of the land. If I could go back, I would take the approach I learned from that experience."

Your interviewer is curious about what you learned from one of your mistakes, which could offer insights into your emotional intelligence. Someone who makes mistakes and does everything they can to avoid repeating them is generally considered a successful person. What is a difficult decision you’ve made in the last year?

"I received an enticing offer for employment from a company in Silicon Valley. The pay was very attractive, as were their benefits. I would, of course, have to relocate to San Francisco, which also seemed attractive. However, the company's culture and values didn't align with mine, and I struggled with whether I would be happy in that environment. I used the salary to justify my interest, but when I decided it wasn't the best fit, I looked more closely at the salary compared to the cost of living. That was when I decided the cons outweighed the pros and turned the offer down. A few people in my family were disappointed I hadn't taken the opportunity, but I think I made a wise choice."

"I would say that my positive attitude is one of my greatest attributes. I attribute this to loving my work and those I have the pleasure of working with. I am everybody's cheerleader and a friend to all."

Tell me about the last time you made an instrumental and quantifiable difference to an organization, project, or a team.

"I was working with someone who was leading a team project. I had prior experience with this project and offered advice about how to approach the work. They resisted my help at first, saying they needed to do it their way. I respected their boundaries but observed from a moderate distance. This person asked each member of their team to volunteer for duties, and some of them were interested in their roles, hoping to learn some new skills from the experience. However, this was missed in their communication, and there was little mentoring being done. Soon their project started falling behind. That's when I volunteered my help again, and they grudgingly accepted. I suggested restructuring the teams according to talent and prior experience for the sake of meeting deadlines. I suggested instructing in detail not only what each team member had to accomplish and by when, but why each task was important and how each piece fit into the big picture of the project. Soon, some members were ahead of schedule and could be reassigned to help others. They met their deadline. I then sat down with that friend over coffee and shared my insights. Since then, they have credited me for some of their skills, which they continue to build upon today."

This results-delivery-focused question is aimed at measuring the impact you made in your example. How you answer will provide them with an indicator of your performance potential with them and how well you would meet their standard. Consider using the STAR method when answering such questions. Address each answer by first offering the SITUATION involved with your example. Then move into the TASK this situation required. Then share the ACTION you took and the RESULT of your actions. This will add structure to your answers.

When was the last time you challenged yourself?

"I am always observing what is happening around me. If I see someone doing something I am doing, but in a better way, I tap into that and ask for their insights. I also do the same and offer suggestions when I see a coworker doing something that can be done in a better way. That, to me, is what teamwork is all about. But I also try to observe myself as others see me and outperform my personal best.The last time I challenged myself was managing my time with a project. I had some ideas to deliver above and beyond. To make that happen, I pushed my deadline up to a personal deadline three days ahead of schedule. Things were going well, and I would have hit that target if a member of my team hadn't gotten ill. As a result, that extra plotted time turned into contingency time, and we delivered on time. The project was a success, but it felt like a personal failure. Next time, I'll do better."

"I'd say I am an influencer and try to lead by example, not only in setting the pace, but in setting the attitude, tone, and transparency I expect of my teams. To get your team to commit to following your lead, you have to earn their trust by including everyone in the behind-the-scenes, insider knowledge of what you are doing and why you are doing it. This gets them to understand the stakes and makes them all stakeholders in the team effort."

Although there are several leadership styles, from authoritarian to transformative, it is important to identify Bain and Company's preferred leadership style, especially since they specialize in leadership change for their clients. So, considering this, research yourself, narrow in on how you would describe your leadership style, and highlight how your approach and philosophy align with theirs.

"Last year, my professor asked for volunteers to lead our group, and I raised my hand and was chosen. I consider myself pretty self-aware, and although I was a little nervous at first, I noted when I spoke too quietly and overcompensated. Anything that made me nervous, I overcompensated for and was told I did well with taking command. I was respectful of my team and very hands-on. After the confidence that gave me, I lead my teams much more often. But when I don't lead, I try to lead by example and support my leaders as much as possible. We're all in it together, after all. Besides, the only person I am competing with is myself."

Tell me about the last time your passion made a positive impact.

"A member of one of my teams was interested in pursuing a leadership position but didn't think they could compete with the other people who were also interested in moving up the ladder. I strongly believed they could do it and were more suited to a leadership position than anyone else interested in throwing their hat in the ring. They had the right attitude, a lot of sense and drive, and were constantly challenging themselves to do better. So I told them that I believed if anyone could do it, they could and that the only person they had to compete with was themselves. I mentored them, and they fast-tracked their way to success. They did all the work themselves. All I did was remind them that they had the right stuff."

"Well, I always try to plan for contingencies. It's important to anticipate as many contingencies as possible, even though you may not know if or when they'll strike. Having said that, I take protecting my client's information very seriously. And that goes beyond guaranteeing their privacy. It extends to ensuring their information is protected and not lost. As a result, I save everything to a secure server in the cloud. I never keep anything on site. One day there was a power outage and a massive surge that caused data recovery on-site and delays. But, luckily I lost nothing and was able to continue working off-site without losing any momentum on the projects I was focused on. Yes, the power outage happened and was not according to plan, but I planned for it anyway. For me, it was a matter of integrity and nothing else."

Your interviewer is curious what your approach is to solving problems, how analytical and creative your thinking is, how you use data to quantify and make recommendations, and whether you can think quickly on your feet and "demonstrate an ability to frame complex problems and think creatively to find pragmatic solutions for our clients. "I mentored and encouraged a friend I worked with to compete for a leadership position. After considering this for a while, they took me up on it, and for the next several months, I trained this person, challenging them to continue to challenge themselves. After a certain point, I half-joked that, before long, they would be my boss. Well, sure enough, they continued to improve at an exponential rate, advancing beyond their peers, and they rose through the ranks and are now my boss."
