"Last year I made a recommendation for our office to incorporate a recycling program. We were going through a lot of single-use coffee pods. It bothered me how wasteful it all seemed. I presented a spreadsheet to my supervisor comparing the single-use pods vs. investing in a built-in coffee machine. The savings over 2 years were significant and my boss has now presented my idea to our head office. It feels nice to be heard in the workplace so I continue to keep my eyes out for opportunities for process improvements."

The interviewer would like to know if you are an engaged employee; offering suggestions and providing deeper thought when it comes to process improvement in the workplace. Give an example of a time when you made a suggestion for improvement in the workplace. It can be big or small! Did anything great come out of your suggestion?

"The last time I made a suggestion for workplace improvement would have been during our last staff meeting. We have a very dated CRM system so I went ahead and researched a few newer and less costly options. I presented my findings in the meeting and the leaders are currently reviewing some options."

"After researching Avis Budget Group, Inc. online, I found that you really stand out through the many ways that you give back to your community. On the Avis Budget Group, Inc. website, as well as third party review sites, people are talking about the charitable contributions and generosity coming from Avis Budget Group, Inc.. This makes your company a big stand-out to me because I am serious about working for an organization that is aware of their social impact."

"I work a lot but, when I do have free time, I spend that with my grand-kids. It helps to give my son a bit of a break as he is a full time single dad. In addition to this, I volunteer at the local drop-in center every Christmas to help feed the homeless. Giving back is very important to me."

"I agree that community giving is important. I have a regular commitment with our local animal shelter and I also act as a foster home for displaced animals, when the shelter is experiencing overflow. It's easy for me because I am an animal lover but it's also really rewarding to do something kind. Can you tell me more about the philanthropic efforts of Avis Budget Group, Inc.?"

"I contribute to my church. Next weekend I will be going to help other parishioners clean the church. I also often do Shoebox gifts for disadvantaged children overseas at Christmastime."

What do you foresee as the biggest challenge working for Avis Budget Group?

"This position sounds very exciting and I understand that all roles come with their own challenges. If I had to comment on potential challenges I think the biggest one will be to learn this new industry and the language that comes with communicating with your customers. I am confident; however, that I will meet your expectations as I am a quick and diligent learner."

You need to understand your customer's business needs and have the ability to analyze their future needs so that you can respond appropriately as their business landscape changes."

Rest assured, in my 15 years of employment, I have not had any clients complain to my employer about my work ethic or delivery of service."

"I am well motivated by opportunities for promotion and new responsibilities. If you see me excelling in a particular area, it is likely because I have a very strong interest in it. So, providing me with more responsibilities, related to that particular area, is great for me."

"I believe a job well done is its own reward. It is nice to receive confirmation in the form of praise and recognition, though."

When have you shown a willingness to learn a new method or new approach to solving a problem?

"When our company came under new management last year there were many new methods and policies that came into place. I was able to learn many new approaches to our challenges in sales, and customer management. I quite enjoyed the process."

It is a great skill to have when you are able to approach a problem in a new way. Discuss with the interviewer your ability to approach a problem using new methods.

"I am always willing to learn new techniques and problem solving methods! In my most recent position I requested to attend a workshop at our local college that included dispute resolution and other customer service techniques. I learned a lot there and was able to implement my new approach almost immediately."

"I realized the need for ACL training to perform audits at work and sought the necessary training to solve audit problems. I also realized the need to improve my leadership skills and applied for and obtained a leadership position at work. I also recognized a need to improve my public speaking skills and gave speeches in the "LIM" program and at Toastmasters."

Tell me about a time when you had to troubleshoot to solve a problem.

"Last week, while operating the till, I was receiving a repeated error. I entered in a few different codes but that didn't solve the issue. I then did a hard reset, removing all power sources. Then, I referred to the online manual for additional suggestions. It took a little time and patience but I was able to resolve the issue without calling a technician."

Troubleshooting is like reverse engineering - it takes skill, effort and patience. You have to understand the problem in order to know how to work backwards from it to find a solution. Knowing how to solve problems with technical equipment is always a solid skill, and a great way to demonstrate your example. Show that you are insightful in your approach.

"We do not have an IT department in my current office so whenever an issue arises, I am the person that my team calls. Troubleshooting is fun for me - it's like a new challenge every time. Google and IT related forums are often my best friend!"

"I have to troubleshoot a problem when an audit I am doing fails and I get a low rate of reconciliation once I run it in a new month. I have to make comparisons of data to see what is different between the two sets and what lowered my match rate. Making improvements is one of the more enjoyable parts of my position."

What career path interests you the most in this company?

"What interests me most about your company is that there are so many options when it comes to career growth. Ideally, I would like to earn my way into a Territory Sales role, then a Regional Manager position. Eventually, a Director of Sales or Marketing position would be ideal. Of course, I understand that this will take many years of dedication and hard work."

"What are the scheduling expectations for this position?"

Before answering scheduling questions, it's important to be clear on expectations. If you haven't had a chance to clarify their scheduling needs, now would be the perfect time to ask! Consider asking, "What are the scheduling expectations for this position?" If they expect you to work 12 hour days, it would be important for you to know that before you respond with, "Absolutely! No problem!" You want to be sure that you can meet their expectations. If it turns out their schedule expectations won't work for you, think about what you can offer and see if you can meet in the middle. It's much better to discuss these things in an interview than for you to commit to a schedule that won't work for you.

"I am willing to work overtime, but how much and how often are the first questions that come to mind. I firmly believe that downtime, or personal time, are essential to recharging your batteries and staying focused."

"I will rate myself an 8 because I value communication. I utilize multiple methods of delivering messages and I give ample time for questions before implementation."

"I would give myself an 8. I have had, through experience in providing customer service for Avis, and at my current employer over the phone, experience in communicating with different types of personalities in various degrees of happiness or anger. I handle those situations well. I realize that sometimes the most important part of communication is listening!"

Considering your background is in an industry different from ours, what skills and characteristics do you have that qualify you for this position in this industry?

"Although my background is not in your precise industry, I have worked with many clients who have been in your industry. I bring excellent transferable skills that qualify me for this position. These skills include my advanced abilities in Excel, my outstanding cold-calling abilities as well as my proven background in team leadership."

There are many ways that you can be a fit for a position, even though you do not come with direct industry experience. Think about the variety of skills that you have and how those can benefit another employer, despite the industry. These are your transferable skills and they can include sales abilities, customer service experience, and software skills.

Tell me about a time when you were unable to meet a project deadline. How did you react?

"Last month I missed a project deadline primarily because I underestimated the need for support staff on the project. Despite working overtime, I missed the deadline by 3 days. When I realized that the deadline would not be met, I called the client and apologized. I did take full accountability for the inconvenience and met the second deadline that I promised the client."

Nobody is perfect! The interviewer knows that there will be times when deadlines are not met, and projects go sideways. What they really want to know is - how do you react? Are you someone who will have a workplace temper tantrum or are you the type to keep plugging away, despite the perceived failure? Perhaps you simply underestimated the depth of the project or maybe you faced a distraction at work. Whatever the situation was, discuss what you learned from the outcome. Show the interviewer that you do not have a defeatist mentality.

"We once fell behind in a project due to testing on a new service. I reacted by quickly rearranging schedules and identifying our earliest possible completion to inform our supervisors and customers."

How often do you discuss work with your colleagues in order to think up new systems and styles of working?

"I have a policy with my team that if they have an innovative and helpful idea they can bring it to me at any time. If their idea or system is something that I think could work, we then create a plan together to present it to our head office. This policy has generated some really strong ideas in our office over the past 3 years including a work-share program and some health and safety initiatives."

Do you use your creative mind with your colleagues in order to discuss ideas and systems in the workplace? Talk to the interviewer about how you have used creative thinking in the workplace.

"I think it is important to discuss work with colleagues in a collaborative nature to encourage all types of ideas to come forth. Often times, when people put their heads together, they will create something better than something one individual could have done alone."

How many days were you absent from work last year?

"I had zero unexcused absences last year. In total, I took 12 vacation days out of my 15 allotted days. I was sick just 2 and those were accompanied by a note from my Doctor. Once I was late due to a terrible snow storm and I always try to be 10 minutes early for my shift."

A part of being a diligent employee is to ensure that you are always on time and present when expected. It's great to even be 10 minutes early rather than just showing up right on the dot. Talk to the interviewer about your attendance.

"I cannot recall the exact number but I think it was around 3 days total. All absences were excused and with notice."

"For vacation, approximately two weeks. For sick days, such as for appointments or illness, maybe four or five, not always for myself alone. I have a daughter. All absences were excused and with notice."

Tell me about yourself.

"I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Communications and Marketing from UBC in 2009. Since then, I have been actively making my way to a leadership role in social media marketing. I am an energetic and positive person, ready to make a difference in a growing organization."

Open ended questions are some of the hardest to answer in an interview. It's important to train yourself how to talk about yourself. It may sound a little silly, because you've been talking about yourself for years! In an interview, you should leave out the highly personal stuff. No need to talk about your new puppy or your favorite foods. Keep it professional and concise. Interviews typically last for about thirty minutes to an hour, so keep that in mind as you prepare. Sometimes practicing with a friend or timing your response can help. Focus on your interest or passion for the field, your education and accomplishments. Keep it relevant to the job at hand! Also consider the fact that there is plenty of time for you to talk about your skills and strengths during the interview, so you don't have to say it all in one gulp.

"I think honesty is always the best policy, and I try to live by the golden rule. I have a love of learning and hope to continue to learn at work and to grow as a person outside of work as well by learning new things my entire life. Customer service has always been an important part of my work life, and I am looking forward to finding a position where it will be in the forefront again."

What was your biggest take-away from your post-secondary education?

"My biggest take-away from post-secondary education was the level of discipline that I mastered while there. I could multi-task, focus, and think in a completely different way once I had graduated."

"Sometimes full disclosure can damage someone's self esteem, and reality isn't always best expressed in full and can be self-indulgent based on the person's intention. In those instances, honesty isn't always the best policy."

"Honesty is always the best policy. Often times, it is just a matter of how you communicate and deliver your message so managing this with each situation is critical to building honest and trustworthy relationships."

How can we motivate you on the job?

"I am best motivated through words of praise and recognition for a job well done. I do like to know that my efforts are being noticed. In my current position we have a leader board and I do like that concept because it creates a healthy bit of personal competition in me as well."

Every employer should know how each staff member is best motivated. Talk to the interviewer about the variety of ways in which you are best motivated on the job.

"I am motivated by knowing something about the end consumer and being able to relate to them as a person. I like to know that my work is makin"

"I am highly self-motivated and want to perform my best. Recognition may help to motivate me as well."

What leadership qualities do you possess?

"I feel that I am good at motivating a team. Last year, I motivated my sales team every day, and we ended up being the top sales team in the company for the year!"

"I am someone people want to follow because of my general knowledge and willingness to help. I like to keep myself available for talks, provide recognition to employees, and hire the right people for the job in the first place. I try to communicate a "vision" of honesty and hard work and pride in that work."

Have you ever had to fire an employee? What were the reasons for their termination?

"I have had to terminate employees in the past, yes. These terminations generally stemmed from missed targets or insubordination. I find it challenging to terminate employees because you do care about them and their well being. I have to remind myself that I did absolutely everything that I could to ensure their success but, at the end of the day, I cannot carry the full weight."

Terminating an employee is never a task that people like to do. Talk to the interviewer about how you go about employee terminations. What does that conversation usually look like?

"Unfortunately, this is a part of wearing your management hat. I recently had to separate employment with someone who was under-performing. We coached them, offered additional learning experiences and worked with them on a performance improvement plan. It was the right person in the wrong role and we had to make the decision to move forward."

Who is the smartest person you know? Explain your answer.

"To me, the smartest person I know is author Brene Brown. She has the most unique concepts and I have never seen anyone be able to dissect and analyze statistics quite like her. She's absolutely brilliant. This is a great question! Who do you feel is the smartest person you know?"

You can have fun with this question and choose a family member, friend, mentor, author, or celebrity. Just be sure that you can back your answer! A great way to keep this conversation going would be to ask the interviewer the same question in the end.

"The smartest person I know is my grandmother! She served for the armed forces and made a name for herself in a time when it wasn't popular for women to serve in the military. I admire her smarts and her courage."

"I think my husband is the smartest person I know. He really understands people and is excellent at relating to them and getting them to follow him."

If you had $50,000 to build your own business, what would you do?

"If I had $50,000 to build my own business I would open up a community center in my neighborhood that offered inexpensive childcare, cooking classes, and other life skills programs. I am passionate about volunteering and see a strong need in those particular areas."

If money was no object, what kind of business would you start? The interviewer will be able to learn something new and unique about you through this question. Avoid answers that would include building a business that competes with the hiring company.

"I would choose to invest the $50,000 into an existing business in an industry that my spouse has an interest in. I love what I do for a career but she has always wanted to be an entrepreneur."

"I would probably set up a hobby store for my husband. He would be great at it and would make a good entrepreneur."

What do you think might be the greatest challenges faced in this job with Avis Budget Group? How will you overcome these challenges?

"I think the greatest challenges in this role will be to learn the proper operation of the software systems. Another challenge will be the physical aspect of the position as I will be required to stand and walk around most of the day. I will be sure to pay keen attention during training and ask questions along the way. In regards to the physical component - I will get used to the additional activity after just a couple of days, I'm sure."

Even though it may seem like a dream job, the interviewer wants to know that you have realistic expectations of the role and that you will not be blindsided if problems or challenges present themselves. Keep you answer simple. It is absolutely okay to ask for clarification on the role if you do not fully understand what challenges are in store for you.

"I would say the greatest challenges I'll face in this role is learning the industry ins and outs in order to be perceived as an expert when making the pitch to new clients. I'm not worried in the least of learning the material or the pitch, but there's more to being credible and approachable about a topic than the company's pitch, so I want to be sure to really immerse myself in the industry lingo, attend as many seminars and conventions as possible, and I've already begun subscribing and reading the leading industry publications so that I can really get into the nitty gritty of how it all works. Of course, I will also seek out mentorship opportunities where I can learn from folks who have been in the industry for years. I find they love to share their knowledge and it really gives me a leg up."

"I need a better understanding of the industry than I had as a rental sales agent. I would like to regularly read trade publications for the auto rental and travel industries and make sure I retain what I learn in your training program."

How do you feel about performance incentives?

"I feel that performance incentives are a great idea. They keep an employee motivated to do a great job and ensure that they are on top of their KPI's. The majority of people are very enthused about being rewarded for their successes."

Performance incentives can be very motivating. Talk to the interviewer about your feelings re: performance incentives.

"I think performance incentives are important for driving people to get results. For me, personally, they give me some skin in the game and get my team engaged in making an impact towards the results."

"I think performance incentives are very motivational to some employees. Being rewarded monetarily for exerting yourself over and above the norm is important to some, whereas others are intrinsically motivated. Rewards for success are nice for everyone. It is recognition as well as an incentive."

If you had a co-worker call in sick and you were asked to take over their project requiring overtime from you, how would you react? Where do you draw the line when it comes to being a team player?

"I will always choose to be a team player. If I had a co-worker call in sick, I would take over what I was capable of. The only time I would draw the line would be if I felt I was being taken advantage of. For example, if they were purposefully being inefficient and expecting me to pick up the slack. For the sake of the company, I am always willing to go above and beyond what is expected of me."

"I am always willing to do what it takes for my team to be successful. I have not yet needed to draw boundaries pertaining to this; however, I would likely draw the boundary if I felt that my willingness to help was being taken for granted."

Each of us has a time in our life where we felt as though we did not fit in. Were you more of a listener in this situation, did you approach someone and ask them questions? "I've always been the youngest in a leadership position within my department as a whole. Being the youngest, and being in a position of leadership is alienating on two accounts. I'm excluded because I'm "oh so young", and I'm excluded because I'm also their boss. It's certainly alienating and can be discouraging. That said, I have made every effort to make myself a part of the team, whether that is finding ways to relate to what they're talking about and going along with the joke or poking fun at my age, to an extent, and even sometimes giving it back to them in jest about their eras, to also being sure to walk the fine line of being appropriate, fun, but also requiring some degree of respect. I want to be comfortable and accepted, but not at the cost of compromising myself or my leadership abilities."
