"I have worked with a wide range of personalities and management styles with great success. If I could express a preference, I feel I work best with a manager who allows me autonomy while still investing time in me through mentorship and training. Can you describe the management style here?"

"When I arrived for training for my most recent position, there was some miscommunication about the amount of time I was expected to stay at the store and train. I was still working at my former job and had planned my schedule around what the training manager had told me originally. When I explained the situation to the trainer, she double-checked her notes and verified that she had originally told me I would be done earlier in the day, giving me plenty of time to make it to my other job. I felt good about the way I handled that situation -- even though I felt a little frustrated, I went to my manager respectfully and non-confrontationally, and everything worked out just fine."

I asked my manager if I could take a shift to come up with an organizational system for the back room. My manager agreed and picked out a typically slow shift, but they told me I could take no more than one shift, and if there was no improvement, that would be the end of it. It took the entire eight-hour shift, but by the end, every item was shelved and organized in easy-to-find locations. The new setup made stocking and inventory easier, and my manager complimented my ingenuity."

"I stay calm and composed when issues arise. My dad got rear-ended one time when driving me to school. I texted my friend to see if she could tell my teacher what happened. "I graduated from the automotive program of my county's trade school two years ago. After that, I worked in a local mechanic shop as an automotive service technician. I enjoy the work, but I'd like to interact more with customers. I enjoy sharing my expertise and helping others solve their car problems. I know AutoZone is looking for knowledgeable and dedicated sales associates, and I think I would be a good fit."

"My greatest accomplishment was solving a recurring problem for my last employer. We had personal handheld devices to show what items we had in stock and could look up products for our customers to see if we had more on the shelves or in the back. Unfortunately, the numbers were often wrong, despite all of us being diligent about inputting the right numbers when we stocked. I did a bit of sleuthing and discovered that our new car side service had not been added to the system that tracked inventory. Customers would use an app to order their items, and an associate would shop their order, pack it up, and take it to their car. For some reason, when items were ordered through the app, our inventory program didn't count them as being purchased, so it looked like we had more product in the store than we did. It turned out to be an easy fix, and before long, our inventory numbers were correct. After that, we had a lot fewer angry customers, and organizing the shelves became much easier!"

I've had customers get angry with me about a policy I had no control over. When that happens, I listen patiently and attentively to the customer's concerns and work with them to find a solution to their problem that aligns with the company's policies."

Some customers insist on bending or breaking the rules, particularly return policies. While AutoZone values customer service, they do not want their employees disregarding policies and cutting the company's profits. However, employees must still behave professionally and respectfully towards these customers. What would you do if you found a co-worker stealing from the company?

"My reaction to employee theft would differ if I were a retail associate or manager. If I were a manager and caught an employee stealing, I would terminate them immediately. If I were an associate, I would report the incident according to company protocol. I would avoid approaching the employee as I would not want to make it a personal issue."

Employee theft is a very real problem for many companies. While AutoZone has loss prevention initiatives in place, they also want to hire honest employees in their other departments. "During the first week I worked in retail, one of my coworkers was caught stealing cash from the register. I would notify my manager immediately if I suspected or witnessed a coworker stealing. That behavior is unacceptable, no matter where you work."

Tell me about your mathematical skills. Would you be comfortable handling transactions?

"I've worked in retail for a few years, so I'm very comfortable with several POS systems and registers. I did very well in high school math and am comfortable with the math required to accept cash, balance a cash float, and perform inventory-related tasks."

"I understand this role will include working evenings, weekends, and holidays. I am available to work anytime and am happy to work overtime as well."

How would you handle an upset customer and keep the situation from escalating?

"If someone is having a hard day, sometimes all it takes is one interaction to tip the scales in one direction or the other. If a customer enters the store in a frustrated or aggressive mood, I try to give them extra attention or elevated service. I listen to their problem and do my best to find a solution. I stay calm and smile. Usually, my calm demeanor calms the upset customer, and my eagerness to help them makes them happy."

Not every customer will be pleasant. AutoZone's customers are usually dealing with car trouble and are often frustrated and upset. No matter how a customer's frustration causes them to act, you will be expected to treat them respectfully and professionally. Tell the interviewer how you would de-escalate a conflict with an upset customer.

"In the past, I've had success with changing the trajectory of an interaction with an aggressive customer by patiently listening to their problems and remaining calm. I know that escalation happens when both parties become more agitated, so it's important that I stay calm when a customer becomes agitated. In extreme situations, if I'm unable to de-escalate a situation alone, I loop in one of my managers so we can resolve the situation together."

What would you do if your co-worker did not show up for their shift?

"I'm always happy to pick up extra shifts for any reason, especially if it means helping my managers and coworkers out of a bind when someone doesn't show up for their assigned shift. Being a team player is important to me, and I want to do what I can to make my coworkers' jobs easier."

"I have a proven track record for being a person of integrity in the workplace. Last year, at my most recent workplace, I caught a coworker, who was a friend of mine outside of work, trying to steal something from our store. I was horrified, and he was dismissive when I confronted him about it. I wrestled with it overnight, but then I knew I had to go to my manager the next day and talk it out with her. She told me she appreciated that I came to her with the information and said she would handle it. My coworker ended up getting fired, which was hard, but I knew I did the right thing."

Take me through your experience in retail. What was the most challenging position you held? Which was your favorite and why?

"By far, my most challenging retail position was my first, nearly eight years ago. It was difficult to transition from restaurant service to retail service. While some of the skills are transferable, it was a totally different experience. But that first difficult job set me up for success in the retail industry like a trial by fire. I learned a lot about myself and what it means to create great customer experiences that result in repeat and regular customers."

"While I haven't yet worked in the retail industry, I'm excited to get started! In my most recent position at an IT call center, my favorite part of the job was the connections I built with my repeat customers. I loved getting to know them, learning how to communicate with them, and building honest, respectful relationships. It's been a challenging job because IT trouble tends to bring out the worst in people (everyone hates it when technology doesn't work the way it should). It's taught me to stay calm, focused, and positive when things don't go the way you expect, which I think are valuable skills in the retail industry."

"At my current store, we have a repeat customer who never fails to cause some kind of problem, some of which take hours to disentangle. He came in the other day when just my manager and I were on the floor, and my manager clearly wanted an 'out' from interacting with the customer -- so I took the initiative and told my manager I had it covered. As we've come to expect, the customer had a problem that took a couple of hours to resolve to his satisfaction, but my manager's relief and appreciation made the headache worth it."

"A few months ago, a customer from out of town came into our store because she needed an outfit for a funeral -- she was in town visiting family when unexpected tragedy struck. The customer was obviously distraught and needed special attention. I went to the neighboring coffee shop and bought the customer a tea, took her to a comfortable area of the store, and, with her consent, went through the store and grabbed a few items that I thought would be appropriate for her needs. She was so grateful to not have to shop or try on several items to find the right thing -- I was able to find her a dress that worked well for the ceremony, and she gave me her credit card so that I could complete her transaction while she remained in the fitting room area to be alone and gather herself. It was a hard day, but it was a really rewarding experience."

How do you like to be recognized for your accomplishments?

"I dislike being the center of attention, so I don't find public recognition particularly motivating. My last manager was in the habit of giving employees simple, hand-written notes to express appreciation for going the extra mile or accomplishing a larger goal; sometimes, these notes were accompanied by gift cards. It was a simple gesture, but it meant a lot to hear from my boss that my work was noticed and appreciated."
