A few years ago, we had a patient who was under our care following a car accident. They had a collapsed lung and several broken ribs and were on a treatment of chest tube drainage and oxygen therapy. While the patient was having some pretty severe complications and was under the close watch of the physician and nursing team, a respiratory therapist was making their rounds in the unit and thought the patient was due for treatment. This therapist was pretty argumentative with me when I let her know we'd let the RT Supervisor know when their treatments could resume. Rather than taking a stern approach, I quickly explained the new changes in the patient's condition and we discussed how a follow-up treatment would best work."

As my duties have mainly centered on pediatrics more recently, I've focused a lot of effort on the PPA core competency training and have attended their annual meeting over the last two years. Getting to talk with other industry professionals and attending research presentations and seminars has certainly improved my knowledge. I also actively participate in the PPA blog online."
