Give me an example of a time when you have missed an obvious solution to a problem. How were you made aware of it, and how did you rectify it? What did you learn from this situation?

      How to Answer

There is a saying that it isn't your mistakes that define you, but how you deal with them. If you get a question like this, don't feel as though you can't answer. Everyone makes a mistake, so be honest about it but then ensure that you explain what you learnt from the experience. Is there anything you would do differently for example?

"The first week I started as a vet tech. I invoiced a feline distemper instead of a canine distemper. The client was charged incorrectly. I was made aware by my office manager and veterinarian. I was able to rectify my actions, call the owner, and return their money. I became more aware of my invoices and double-checked every client before they left the clinic. I haven't made that mistake again."

"On an expedition, I made a mistake map reading, and we ended up taking the wrong path. However, I soon realised the mistake and working with my friends, we found a way to join our original route. Next time, I learnt to take more care map reading and double-check each time we made a turn. If I were unsure, I would ask another person for their opinion and help."

"When switching puppy plans at my work, I charged out a client who stated we had done a specific vaccine when my vet told me she decided to wait until the next round of shots due to patients' age. The clients were confused about this charge, and I reassured them with the doctor print out notes that she had not given it. I learned to triple check every action I perform now."

Rachelle's Feedback for the Answer Above

Triple checking your work can be an essential step - especially when clients have questions about their pet's treatment. Did your explanation/assurance do the trick with this client? I recommend including details around a result when you tell this story.

"I was presented with the opportunity to do lab work for an animal before its surgery. This included drawing blood, reading a PCV, making and staining blood smears on a slide, and calculating the total protein count. I was informed that my blood smear was not made correctly, which would affect the outcome of my reading and calculation. This was a constructive moment in which I was able to learn from my mistake and make a conscious effort to improve. I rectified my mistake by asking the doctors to call on me for all pre-operative lab work to perfect my work."

It's terrific that you readily accepted this feedback and used this situation as an opportunity to learn and perfect your work. Great story example - it's easy to follow and very clear.
