For example, in my current position, we had a stubborn truancy problem, and the deans didn't know how to solve it. So rather than using a top-down approach or investigating it as a disciplinary or security issue, I took a different view of it. I directed the counselors to look for patterns of truancy and to map out their social networks to find out common traits between those who were chronically truant. They found that they were students who had conflicts at home and had few relationships with peers.
