They also often collaborate with teachers and other school staff to get a more holistic view of a student's progress. Additionally, superintendents may consider factors outside of school, such as a student's home life and community involvement. Why the Interviewer Asks This Question

9.   Are there any work-related situations or tasks that make you uncomfortable?

Why the Interviewer Asks This Question

As a school superintendent, your task requirements are going to be vast, and several work-related tasks could potentially make you uncomfortable. For instance, dealing with employee conflicts or disciplinary actions may be uncomfortable for you. Additionally, enforcing policies or procedures you may not completely agree with could cause discomfort. Finally, having to make difficult decisions or deliver bad news to employees or stakeholders could also be a source of discomfort in your role.

10.   In what area do you feel you need the most professional development? What are you willing to do to strengthen yourself in that area?

Why the Interviewer Asks This Question

As a school superintendent, you must have a wide range of skills and abilities, as this role has many expectations. In your role, it's essential to continually assess the strengths and weaknesses of your staff and yourself and identify areas where professional development could be beneficial. Some possible areas for professional development include technology integration in the classroom, differentiated instruction strategies, cultural competency and sensitivity, trauma-informed teaching practices, and effective communication skills with students, parents, and colleagues. Additionally, staying up-to-date on changes in education policy and best practices can also contribute to the ongoing professional growth and success of educators. Share with the interviewer an area you would like to strengthen and how you will do so. Ensure that you do not give an example that would be a red flag for the interviewer (i.e., I don't like being around large groups of people).

Written by Krista Wenz on June 25th, 2023

Answer Example

"I think I could strengthen my abilities regarding the physical demands of the job. I have always been healthy and athletic, but I attended many conferences last year and was more sedentary than usual. Lately, I have been exercising more and eating better so that I can be more physically active in the schools. This role requires a lot of walking, standing, and physical involvement, so I am working hard to improve my physical health and endurance."

11.   In your opinion, how important is careful budget planning and resource allocation in the school system?

Why the Interviewer Asks This Question

Careful budget planning and resource allocation are extremely important in the school system. It's crucial to ensure schools have the necessary resources to provide high-quality education to students while also being fiscally responsible. With proper planning, schools can allocate resources effectively and efficiently to ensure that all students have access to the resources and tools they need to succeed. This includes everything from textbooks and technology to qualified teachers and support staff. By prioritizing careful budget planning and resource allocation, superintendents can help ensure that every student has the opportunity to reach their full potential. The interviewer wants to see that you share the same views and will be a good fit for the role if offered the position. Describe your thoughts on budget planning and resource allocation while giving an example from your past.

Written by Krista Wenz on June 28th, 2023

1st Answer Example

"I feel the budgeting process is an integral part of educational planning. There are limited resources in the public school system, so these resources must be very carefully allocated. If a school district has financial planning issues, it affects the students negatively. Since quality student learning is our top priority, we must be incredibly diligent with our resources."

Written by Krista Wenz on June 28th, 2023

2nd Answer Example

"Budget planning is incredibly important. No general has ever had enough troops; no CEO has ever had enough money. What's important is how you distribute your limited resources to make the biggest positive impact. Of course, you also have to be wary of second-order effects. The education system is extremely complex, and doing one thing might have unanticipated effects. So we have to plan for as many factors as possible to manage the risks but remain flexible enough to handle the unknown unknowns."

12.   Would you consider yourself a creative person?

Why the Interviewer Asks This Question

The interviewer asks if you consider yourself a creative person to gauge your ability to think outside the box and develop innovative solutions to problems. As a superintendent, you will likely face unique challenges that require creative problem-solving skills, so you must demonstrate your ability to think creatively and adapt to new situations. Additionally, being creative can help you develop new strategies and initiatives that can improve the organization's overall performance.

Written by Krista Wenz on June 28th, 2023

Answer Example

"Yes, I consider myself to be a creative individual. Creativity is a tool to use, and I've used it quite effectively. For example, in my current position, we had a stubborn truancy problem, and the deans didn't know how to solve it. So rather than using a top-down approach or investigating it as a disciplinary or security issue, I took a different view of it. I directed the counselors to look for patterns of truancy and to map out their social networks to find out common traits between those who were chronically truant. They found that they were students who had conflicts at home and had few relationships with peers. To solve the problem, I instituted a policy where school counselors had to interview students on a regular basis immediately after the third truancy. From there, the counselors would notify the appropriate resources to help solve the problems in the home."

Written by Krista Wenz on June 23rd, 2023

Answer Example

14.   Community involvement is important to us. What do you know about our community and school district?

Why the Interviewer Asks This Question

It is important to show the interviewer that you see the importance of community involvement and the role the school plays in the community. Display that you have researched the school district and the surrounding community. There are a few ways you can find this information. First, you can visit the district's website and read about their mission, values, and programs. You can also check out local news sources to see what's happening in the community.

Additionally, you may want to contact current teachers or staff members at the school to ask for their perspectives on the district and surrounding area. Another helpful resource is online forums or social media groups where community members can share information and experiences. By doing your research, you can better understand the school district and community to formulate the best response.

Written by Krista Wenz on June 25th, 2023

Answer Example

"I have done a great deal of research on this school district and the surrounding community. It's amazing to see that the community is so involved with the schools. There is a real sense of pride here. This school district's athletic teams are very competitive, and it seems the community plays a huge part in fundraising and volunteer participation in these athletic programs. Emphasize your ability to communicate effectively with teachers, parents, and community members. Additionally, mention any innovative ideas you have for improving the educational experience for students. By demonstrating your qualifications and passion for education, you can convey why you are the best candidate for the position.

Written by Krista Wenz on June 25th, 2023

Answer Example

"I understand your biggest concern for this particular school district is its reputation for low student grades and the low level of community and parent involvement. If you hired me to be the superintendent, I would set a strong plan to change that. I have a solid track record of increasing student and community engagement. In fact, I have brought you a letter of recommendation from my previous role that outlines these successes in detail."
