Why the Interviewer Asks This Question

As a school superintendent, your task requirements are going to be vast, and several work-related tasks could potentially make you uncomfortable. For instance, dealing with employee conflicts or disciplinary actions may be uncomfortable for you. Additionally, enforcing policies or procedures you may not completely agree with could cause discomfort. Finally, having to make difficult decisions or deliver bad news to employees or stakeholders could also be a source of discomfort in your role.

It's important to be able to handle these tasks professionally and fairly, despite any personal discomfort you may feel. Talk to the interviewer about any work-related tasks that you do not enjoy or ones that make you uncomfortable. Then, describe how you professionally handle the task regardless of your comfort level.

"The most uncomfortable situations revolve around the contract non-renewal or termination process because we are dealing with a person's livelihood. While I do not shy away from these crucial conversations, I am very cautious to help people maintain their dignity and self-worth, often offering them an honorable way out. Ultimately what helps me through this aspect of my role as superintendent is the knowledge that even though this is a big change for this one person, it will be a game-changer for all students and/or teachers under this person."

      Rachelle's Feedback

Excellent answer. Your viewpoint on terminations or non-renewals is wise and showcases the fact that you are a big-picture thinker who does not allow emotions to interfere with professional decisions. Your empathy shines through, as does your enthusiasm for delivering the best for students and high-performing teachers.
