How would you handle an unexpected issue while working in the field?

"I have previous experience in Wireline, where my tools were not properly calibrated before going downhole. Luckily, we were ahead of schedule, and I noticed the issue before I began to collect any data. Thankfully, I did not have any obsolete data that required deleting because I noticed the problem. I was able to present the client with accurate information on schedule."

"This is my first job application, and I do not have any experience working on projects at work. However, everything can be considered a project, even relationships or college studies. You can set milestones and goals and proceed step by step until you eventually graduate, ideally with good grades, and earn your degree. In my opinion, it is important to have a system in everything I do, and I consider my college studies the best project I've worked on up to this point. Now I am looking forward to the next chapter and hope to be as successful in my professional life and the work I accomplish."

It doesn't matter much whether you talk about a successful project or one that failed. As long as you can demonstrate the right attitude towards the work, the hiring manager will be satisfied with your words, because employees with the right mindset do not fail. They either succeed or learn. The team was able to progress quickly and efficiently. During our weekly progress meetings with the lead engineer, we were always ahead of the game! At the end of the project, our team presented our work to a few of our supervisors as well as the client. Everyone was impressed by our hard work."

"While on a job in the field, I was in contact with a client who had little knowledge about the oil patch. It was my duty to provide the client with a desirable result, so I called him multiple times a day to give him status updates on his job, which included any bumps along the road. Sometimes I would get the feeling he didn't understand, so I made sure not to use overly technical language or industry-specific terms in case he was not familiar with the jargon. If he was still unsure, I sent him pictures of equipment or diagrams that I hand drew. I felt like everyone needed to be on the same page, so it was important for me to take the time to explain what I was doing in non-technical terms. He appreciated me going above and beyond in my explanations and even requested me to be on his next job."

Because of our teamwork and communication skills, we were able to provide the client with the data ahead of schedule and within budget."

Sometimes, I can become defensive when expressing my opinion. I am practicing methods to manage this behavior, such as pausing to take a deep breath and carefully considering my words before responding."

"During my summer internship, I was designated to receive all field reports and analyze the integrity of the field data before delivering to the client. During my reviews, I realized I was missing a chunk of data from the field. First, I called the field engineer to make sure I had received the correct files and let him know there was data missing. The field engineer confirmed that it was the correct file and told me he would see why there was data missing. The next day, the field engineer informed me that the tool that was being used downhole at the job had been lowered too quickly at a few points which resulted in missing data, and no one in the field noticed. I was given the unfortunate job of delivering this news to my supervisor. It was a regrettable mistake, but the client was understanding. Fortunately, we were able to correlate data from nearby wells to give the client reasonable results."

"I keep up with the industry in three main ways - subscribing to industry newsletters, attending monthly meetings, and following thought leaders on Twitter. My usual newsletter is an excellent industry newsletter that summarizes news, stats, and trends in my industry every morning. Monthly meetings with colleagues not only open up new ideas but also create opportunities to forge new connections. Lastly, my Twitter feed is a real-time view of what top industry leaders are currently reading."

There are several ways to stay active and current with the latest technologies. You can join a professional organization, find a mentor in the industry, attend industry conferences and tech events, connect with others on social media and LinkedIn, read blogs, and watch TED talks. In this industry, things change fast. For example, in my previous position, I worked as a team leader on a project that involved members from different departments with different backgrounds and skills. This group was put together to finalize the project as a collective and produce a result that we could not have achieved individually. Clear communication was very important during this project. I led the project and organized a short 15-minute session at the start of each day, where each team member would answer the following three questions: 1) What did I do since yesterday 2) What will I do today 3) What problems am I facing. These meetings ensured that everyone could continue with their work instead of waiting for the weekly meeting to discuss their issues. I found this approach to be very effective and a great way to stay in constant communication with the team and stay focused on our team goals. The result of the project was that we provided five distinct deliverables and recorded over $100,000 is cost savings in the last two quarters."
