Would you ever consider relocation? If so, what areas are you open to?

"I am definitely open to relocation. I am eager to find a place where I can grow and learn and become a part of a team."

While relocation may not be a determining factor for employment, larger companies almost always ask this question. The important factor to remember is, if you are fully confident that you are willing to relocate, answer yes. However, if there is any hesitation, there are ways to answer this question without an emphatic no.

"I have never really thought about relocating. However, I think it would be something I would consider within reason."

"I have done a bit of traveling and I am open to the idea of relocation. Primarily I would like to find a place where I can put down roots and grow with a company."

Are you comfortable giving presentations in front of large groups of people?

"I believe I would be comfortable speaking to large groups. I have not spoken to large groups professionally, but I would enjoy the opportunity."

While you may not be asked to give presentations to large groups of people, this question could have a more in depth meaning. Being comfortable with large groups or speaking could give you an opportunity to lecture or mentor others.

"I am comfortable with speaking to large groups. I am a people person and enjoy getting to know others."

"Yes, I am comfortable speaking to large groups. I have done guest lectures on neurological disorders and treatments, and I would do it again."

What characteristics do you think are important for healthcare professionals?

"Confidence is important. It's hard to believe in someone who doesn't believe in themselves."

There is more than one reason for asking this question. First, the interviewer wants to know what qualities you think are important to perform this job. Second, and most importantly, your answer will tell the interviewer if you hold yourself to the same standard as you do others. If you want to see certain characteristics in your peers, you should be able to tell the interviewer with confidence that you possess those traits, as well. This question is one that interviewers often use to distinguish sincerity on the part of the candidate.

"I believe that honesty is important no matter what job title a person holds. I have found that being honest with people creates an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect. Those qualities, I feel, are essential when building rapport with patients and co-workers."

"We all possess different qualities and that is what makes a great team. If I were responsible for interviewing and hiring new employees, I would look for someone who has a genuine interest in the job and a desire to grow and learn. Nobody knows everything there is to know about each disease or treatment. Being willing to learn and share what we've learned with one another makes us a better team and benefits our patients and those who will need care in the future."

If you could choose a specific schedule or shift, what would that be?

"I really do not have a preferred schedule. I know that, as a new employee, I may be asked to work different shifts, and I am ok with that."

Many people work more than one job or have a one parent home which requires them to have a flexible schedule. Others simply prefer to work one shift rather than another. Being up front with the interviewer about what schedule suits your preference could help prevent conflict later on. It is easier to plan a schedule you can agree on than it is to fix problems that arise due to fear of being rejected. Be honest and direct.

"I am not married and have no children at this time. So, I am pretty flexible with my schedule. If I had a choice, I would prefer the late shift, as I am a bit of a night owl. However, I am excited about the opportunity to become a part of this team and am willing to work where I'm needed."

"I can't think of a shift that would be out of my comfort zone. I have often been the employee who takes the late shift so that those with children or evening/night responsibilities can have that time off. I am interested in becoming an asset to the neuro team and look forward to hearing where you think I will be the best fit."

Neurologists in our hospital often work on rotation. Are you prepared to work evenings, weekends, overtime and holidays as required?

"I am a single mom with two school-aged children. Ideally, the day shift would be a better fit for me. This would allow me to fulfill both my work and home responsibilities without a conflict."

"I am passionate about discovering new ways to treat neurologicic disorders and want to work in a place where I can stay for the long-term and become a strong part of a team."

This is your chance to tell someone what makes you a better choice. Be confident and highlight your strengths, but remember to be humble.

"I believe my dedication to furthering neurological studies and the compassion that I have for my patients is something that will make me an asset if I am given the opportunity to work here."

"I am sure every candidate for this position will feel that they are the better choice for the job. But I have (x) years of experience in this field. I have consulted with neurological research teams and have taught neurological studies at the university level. I believe my experience will speak for itself if I am offered this position."

What education would you provide to a patient with Bell's Palsy?

"I would explain to the patient that, although it can be frightening, Bell's Palsy usually resolves quickly. I would explain exercises to strengthen the facial muscles as the nerves begin to recover from the paralysis."

One of the primary responsibilities of healthcare providers is patient education. Understanding disorders and being able to help patients understand them is important. Approximately 1 in 5,000 people develop Bell's palsy each year. Although it is classed as a relatively rare condition, it is frightening to patients as it affects the nerves of the face. Share any knowledge you have about Bell's Palsy with the interviewer.

"Any disorder that affects the nerves enough to leave a paralysis can be frightening. I think one of the most important things is to assure the patient that Bell's Palsy usually resolves within a few months. Also, as the facial nerve begins to recover, tightening and relaxing facial muscles can help strengthen them. Instructing patients to do this often makes them feel like they can have an active role in their own recovery."

"Difficulty swallowing is one of the side effects of Bell's Palsy and it is important to educate patients on safety measures to prevent choking. For instance, patients should chew food well and eat slowly. Choosing soft foods, such as yogurt can also help. If there is little or no feeling in the mouth it is easy for food to build up leading to decay or gum disease. Brushing and flossing can help prevent this."

Tell me what sparked your interest in pursuing a career in neurology.

"The brain is fascinating, and a frontier we are only truly beginning to understand with any depth. So the relative newness of the field is attractive to me. There are so many ways by which to study and understand and address neurological functions and disorders so I knew this would be the perfect career choice for me because it is both fundamental and experimental."

Interviewers almost always ask questions like 'what interests you....' or 'why did you choose....' Sharing your interests is a way for the interviewer to get to know you. Additionally, sharing what interests you the most will help the interviewer try to find placement for you within that preference.

"As early as I can remember I've had an interest in the neurological system. But as I've gone through my schooling my particular passion is to find cures for neurological disorders. It is my hope contribute something of significance to this field as my career develops."

"In my first year of college I was not sure where I wanted to take my studies. But I ended up in a abnormal psychology class, and it open-end my mind to a field I had never considered pursuing. Obviously I didn't pursue a career in that field, but I knew from the brief introduction that I wanted to study the brain. By the time I graduated I found my role working with patients recovering from head trauma."

Tell me about your volunteer experience. Do you feel it is important to be heavily involved in your community?

"I have volunteered at MedCamps for kids a few summers. I do think community involvement is important."

Although being a community volunteer is not a requirement for employment, willingness to give of your time and resources to others without compensation shows the interviewer that you have a sincere desire to serve others. If you have volunteered, share a positive experience you had as a volunteer. If you have not volunteered, it is not necessary to embellish your answer. Stating that you have not volunteered previously is not going to disqualify you from employment.

"I love to volunteer! A group of ladies from my church volunteer at a soup kitchen close to my home once a month. There is nothing like the feeling of giving to someone that you know cannot give back to you. Are there opportunities for employees to volunteer through the hospital?"

"Yes, I do have volunteer experience. I serve meals at a local homeless shelter once monthly and have traveled as a consult with Pilots for Patients."

What neurological disorder interests you the most? Why?

"I have experience working with Alzheimer's patients, which is the neurological disorder that interests me the most. I am interested in Alzheimer's because it affects so many older patients. Many patients that have the disease are not even aware they have it, which I find fascinating. I am also interested in following the advancements that are being made in Alzheimer's research."

The interviewer wants to hear what disorder you are interested in and why that disorder fascinates you. There is no right or wrong answer. The interviewer is only gaining an insight into your interests.

What are your primary interests outside of work?

"I really enjoy working out at the gym and I also take a kickboxing class twice weekly. I feel like I can rest better after a good session. I wake up energized and ready for the next day."

No matter what profession a person chooses, everyone needs some time to unwind and relax. Psychologists today say that a healthy balance in life allows a person to recharge and refocus which can result in better productivity at work. The interviewer simply wants to know what you do for you. Maybe you have a favorite past-time. This is yet another way for the interviewer to get to know you as a person.

"One of my favorite past-times is writing. After a busy day at work, I like to journal or write articles for a blog that I author. Both of these forms of writing allow me to release any feelings of frustration I may experience, especially after a stressful day or a difficult situation at work."

"I have children and grandchildren that I enjoy spending time with. I also like to travel when I have the time."

Over 400,000 people in the United States have Multiple Sclerosis, and around 10,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. Do you have any knowledge or experience working with this disease?

"I do have some experience working with multiple sclerosis patients. The severity varies from patient to patient."

Neurological disorders, such as Multiple Sclerosis, are often debilitating. Having an understanding of the different diseases and the possible signs of progression is helpful for researchers to determine if new methods of treatment are effective. The interviewer may ask you to explain your knowledge of specific diseases to see what area would be a better fit for you. Sharing any knowledge or experience you have is a plus.

"I have had patients before who were diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Milder symptoms might present as numbness in the limbs. Severe cases may involve paralysis or vision loss."

"I do have some knowledge of multiple sclerosis. In the CNS, nerve fibers are surrounded by a myelin sheath, which protects them. Myelin also helps the nerves conduct electrical signals quickly and efficiently. In MS, the myelin sheath disappears in multiple areas, leaving a scar, or sclerosis. There is no cure, but treatment can relieve symptoms and help the person manage their daily living."

What is your knowledge of Huntington Disease?

"I have done some research on Huntington's disease in the past. It is devastating because this is one of those diseases that is hereditary and has no cure."

Neurological disorders are often debilitating. Huntington's disease is certainly no exception. If you have ever worked with patients with this diagnosis or done research on the disease, share your experience.

"Huntington's disease is an incurable, hereditary brain disorder that causes damage to the brain cells. Early symptoms may include mood swings, clumsiness, and unusual behavior."

Do you have any knowledge of Lewy bodies or how they may be connected to Parkinson's Disease?

"I have heard the term 'Lewy bodies,' and know that they play a role in Parkinson's Disease. I really look forward to learning more."

Lewy bodies are deposits of the protein alpha-synuclein. Researchers do not yet know exactly why Lewy bodies form or what role they play in the disease, although there is some speculation. If you have heard of these, share what you have learned with the interviewer. If you have not, it is OK to say so. It is important to remember that when you are asked a question, if you do not know the answer, be honest and show an interest in learning.

"Lewy Bodies are protein deposits found on the brain of patients suffereing from Parkinson's disease."

"I have done a little studying on Parkinson's Disease and have read about Lewy bodies. Some research suggests that the cell's protein disposal system may fail in people with PD, causing proteins to build up to harmful levels and trigger cell death. I also read a study that suggests there is evidence that clumps of protein that develop inside brain cells of people with PD may contribute to the death of neurons."

How would you explain the difference between the peripheral nervous system and the central nervous system?

"The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system connects the CNS to muscles, organs, and other structures of the body."

Although the two systems are interconnected, the peripheral nervous system is separate from the central nervous system. There are a number of differences between the two systems and knowing them is essential if you plan to work with CNS research/medical care. Share some differences between the peripheral and central nervous systems with the interviewer.

" One major difference between the two involves regeneration of cells. Much of the peripheral nervous system has the ability to regenerate, but the central nervous system does not have this ability."

"The central nervous system includes the brain, spinal cord, and their associated nerves. The peripheral nervous system is the nervous system outside of the brain or spinal cord. The nerve cells of the central nervous system are shorter than those of the peripheral nervous system."

Autism is a neurological disorder that has several disorders within its spectrum of diagnoses. Can you share your knowledge of one of the disorders within the Autism spectrum?

"Pervasive Developmental Disorder is more severe than Asperger's syndrome, but not as severe as autistic disorder."

There are several disorders associated with autism. Until recent years, this diagnosis was not understood, and much research is still being conducted to prevent and diagnose the disease early. Explain what you know about autism.

"Autism is a complex spectrum of disorders. One of the diagnoses I am aware of is Asperger's Syndrome. It is characterized by repetitive or restrictive patterns of thought and behavior. Unlike persons with other forms of autism, people who have Asperger's syndrome retain their early language skills."

Have you ever cared for patients with Alexander Disease?

"I have never cared for patients with Alexander Disease, but I have read studies on the disease. It affects the myelin sheaths in the brain which results in damage to the nerve fibers of the brain."

There are a number of rare neurological disorders and Alexander Disease is among them. Share any experience/knowledge you have of this disease with the interviewer.

"I do not have in-depth knowledge of Alexander Disease. I do know that it is a disorder that affects the myelin matter of the brain and that it is progressive and usually fatal."

"Yes, I have cared for patients with Alexander Disease before. It is one of a group of neurological conditions known as leukodystrophies disorders that are the result of abnormalities in myelin the white matter that protects nerve fibers in the brain."

What is something important that you learned during your clinical residency?

"I learned to let go of the burden of being all-knowing in my field. I do not need to know everything, nor can I. It is more important that I'm honest about my limitations and rely instead on my ability to research and involve my colleagues. I also try to stay connected with changes in healthcare. This makes me a better provider."

The interviewer is not necessarily looking for something that you learned about neurology. This can be anything that you feel is important. Some suggestions might be that you learned how to provide excellent patient care, you learned how to listen actively, or that you learned that keeping current on technology is essential in this profession.

"It has been quite some time since my clinical residency. I think the most important lesson I learned was that building strong relationships is crucial to giving good patient care. When people can work well with their peers, that is reflected in the care that is given to patients who trust us with their care."

Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis is often misdiagnosed. Do you know what the symptoms are and what it may be mistakenly diagnosed as?

"I did a research paper on ADEM when I was taking a class on neurological disorders. It presents with similar symptoms as multiple sclerosis."

Misdiagnosis can be very frustrating for both patients and healthcare providers. Being educated on different diseases/disorders helps to reduce the number of misdiagnosed patients and allows an appropriate plan of care to be implemented. Describe your understanding of this disease.

"The symptoms of ADEM are similar to those of multiple sclerosis. Because of this, the disorder is often misdiagnosed as a severe attack of multiple sclerosis."

"Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis is a neurological disorder that causes a person to experience a short and sudden inflammatory attack in their spinal cord and brain. The symptoms of ADEM are similar to those of multiple sclerosis. Because of this, it is often misdiagnosed as MS."

Are you familiar with the use of Deep Brain Stimulation to treat neurological disorders?

"Deep Brain Stimulation involves using electrodes that are implanted in the brain to produce electrical impulses and regulate abnormal impulses."

Deep brain stimulation involves implanting electrodes within certain areas of your brain. These electrodes produce electrical impulses that regulate abnormal impulses. If you have any knowledge or experience with this treatment, share it with the interviewer.

"I have some knowledge of patients with Parkinson's disease who have been treated using deep brain stimulation. In some of them, there was a noticeable reduction in the symptoms of tremo and walking problems caused by Parkinson's disease."

"Yes, I am familiar with deep brain stimulation. It is a neurosurgical procedure that uses implanted electrodes and electrical stimulation to treat movement disorders associated with Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, dystonia and other neurological conditions."

Migraines are a common neurological disorder that is often misdiagnosed. Have you ever experienced a migraine or cared for someone who has?

"I do have experience caring for patients with migraines. One of my patients who experienced migraine headaches also reported seeing flashing lights, spots, and, once, a temporary loss of vision."

A migraine is a chronic neurological disease characterized by recurrent moderate to severe headaches, often associated with a number of autonomic nervous system symptoms. Typically the headache affects one half of the head, is pulsating in nature, and lasts from 2 to 72 hours. Associated symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light, sound, or smell. The pain is generally made worse by physical activity. Describe your experience with these types of headaches.

"Unfortunately, I do know the pain of migraines. When I was a teenager, I often experienced them. The pain can almost feel debilitating at times. I now have a prescription medication that I take when I begin to experience symptoms, and it has been effective in controlling them for me."

"I have both experienced migraines and cared for others who suffer with them. You are right to say that migraines are often misdiagnosed as they are often diagnosed symptomatically. However, a CT scan of the brain can also show specific areas affected."

Have you ever worked with patients with Childhood Integrative Disorder, and if so, what do you know about it?

"I have a particular interest in the autism spectrum and made it my focus. I know that it is severe, and can be a traumatic experience for families because it presents later than other types of autism. It can take people off-guard for that reason and I hope to gain a wider perspective on this disorder with more clinical experience."

Autism is a complex neurological disorder and the condition has a wide range of severity along its spectrum. Childhood Integrative Disorder is one disorder within the autism spectrum. Share any knowledge you have of the disorder.

"I have studied some of the diseases on the autism spectrum. Childhood disintegrative disorder is a rare condition characterized by late onset of developmental delays or severe and sudden reversals in language, social function, and motor skills."

"I do have some brief experience with Childhood Integrative Disorder. I know it is characterized by at least two years of normal development followed by a loss of language, social skills, and motor skills before age ten. It is my understanding that it is one of the most severe diagnoses within the autism spectrum."

Have you ever been accused of malpractice?

"I have never been accused of malpractice. I hope to always have a practice that is without any issues that could lead to that."

Malpractice is defined as 'improper, illegal, or negligent professional activity or treatment, especially by a medical practitioner, lawyer, or public official.' It is important to recognize that the interviewer is asking if you have been accused, not convicted. Although many people would like to shy away from this question, if there is anything that may be revealed later, it is important to be honest now.

"I have not been formally accused of malpractice. When I was in my residency, I did have a patient who questioned some of my team's practices and threatened to report us to a supervisor. There has never been any other occasion like this in my career."

How would your subordinates describe you?

"I have limited experience in a supervisory experience, but I do believe that those I've worked with would say that I am easy going and good to my patients."

Questions such as this one are asked with the aim of getting you to discuss some of your qualities, perhaps hidden that you wouldn't have mentioned if you weren't asked. Remember to be positive.

"My colleagues will tell you that I am a team player and that they feel comfortable coming to me when they need an extra hand or someone to speak with in confidence."

"I feel confidant that those who have worked under my direction would speak well of me. I am hardworking, and passionate about my patients, and look out for my colleagues as well."

Has there ever been a time that you had a disagreement with a co-worker, and if so, how was it resolved?

"I am usually a very soft-spoken person and strive to be the 'peacekeeper.' I can't recall any specific incident of a disagreement."

Any time you work with someone else, there is a chance of having a disagreement about something at one time or another. The interviewer knows this. It's human nature for people to have their own opinions. What is important to the interviewer in this question is whether or not you are willing to compromise and work through difficult situations with your co-workers. Being unwilling to compromise or find alternative solutions to a dispute can affect everyone on the team, even if it is indirectly. Sharing a personal experience is OK, but do not embellish it to 'be the hero.'

"I believe if we think about it, each of us could remember at least one disagreement with a friend or co-worker. Although I consider myself to be pretty easy-going, I am also very passionate about my patients and the care that they receive. I have been aware of disagreements between other co-workers, but really like to think of myself as more of a peacekeeper. I feel like professional people should be able to discuss disagreements dispassionately and logically, and come to an agreement that is satisfactory for everyone involved."

"I think the most common disagreement between myself and others have involved our personal feelings about how healthcare should be carried out. However, I have learned, as have most of the people that I have worked with, that while our opinions are important, plans of care are designated by strict guidelines and with the input of everyone on the care team as well as the patient. Learning to respect those guidelines and patient wishes usually resolves issues that arise"

Salary is often commensurate with experience. How do you feel about someone with more experience than you having a higher salary but doing the same job?

"I don't have a problem with someone who has more experience than me making a higher salary. I respect the experience that others have and know that I will have to prove myself."

Most employers do offer higher salary incentives to get more seasoned employees because they bring a suite of experiences with them on top of their education. It is important to note that the interviewer is not saying you will definitely make less than someone with more experience. Many times this question is to see how you respond and how badly you want a position. If an employee is willing to put in the work and earn the pay increase, employers often see them as someone worth investing in. This is a good time to ask what the beginning salary is and discuss options that are negotiable such as benefits and paid time off.

"I realize that salaries are often determined by the amount of experience of an applicant. I appreciate the fact that employers recognize experience as a factor in determining pay and I am here to learn and to apply my skills and training to the best of my ability."

"I understand that years of experience are often rewarded with higher earning. I feel, given the chance to demonstrate my knowledge and skills, you will find that I am capable of doing the job as well as some of the more experienced employees. Having said that, I will not turn down an offer of employment because of a difference in pay based on my present lack of experience. With that in mind, what benefits are available for someone coming on board with your company with my resume?"

Being a healthcare provider is rewarding, but can be stressful at times. Will you share a stressful experience you had at work and how you got through it?

"I am sure there are times that we all have felt stressed. For me the most stressful time was when we had a fire on an upper floor of the hospital. We all worked together and made sure the area was clear. Thankfully everyone remained safe."

The interviewer recognizes that, while being a healthcare provider has its benefits, it can often be trying at times. This question gives you the chance to show how your vulnerability meets your strengths. Having balance between the two is a sought-after characteristic of healthcare providers. Being willing to open up to the interviewer about a situation that was emotional for you and how you were able to cope will show them what can be expected of you when you are faced with a difficult situation in the future.

"I think the most stressful experience I had at work was when I was doing my residency. We had a mother that experienced a stroke during the delivery of her baby. She died as a result of the stroke. It is an experience that I will never forget. Both my colleagues and I regularly checked in with each other and allowed each other space in order to cope."

"When I worked in paediatrics we had a four year old child that was admitted due to having seizures. After further testing, it was discovered that the child had a brain tumor. The tumor was very advanced and she lost her life because of it. That time was very emotional for everyone on the care team. Fortunately, we had a good team leader who gave us an opportunity to talk with her and one another about the overwhelming grief that we felt. I have found that talking through emotions is a great way to work through any unresolved grief."

As a neurologist you will often have to deliver discouraging news to patients and their families. How do you handle such hard situations?

"I always try to schedule enough time to spend with the patient and family so that they can talk to one another and with me. Helping them process the news is often a way for me to cope as well."

Delivering discouraging news can be difficult for any healthcare provider. The interviewer is not expecting you to react as though you are resilient to all difficult situations. Rather, he wants to know that you can get the job done while being compassionate.

"Delivering bad news is hard. I always try to be soft-spoken and give the patient and their families time to ask questions."

"There is always that one case that seems to be more difficult than others. If I have to deliver bad news, I always make sure that I have all of the facts of the case and prepare myself to answer any questions the patient or family may have. Being sure of what I have to say and being professional, while compassionate, is helpful to both the patient/family, and to me."

Do you have strong relationship building skills?

"I do feel like I have good relationship building skills. I like people and enjoy getting to know them."

Building strong relationships is essential for success of any business. The healthcare industry is no exception. Share why you think you have good relationship building skills.

"I like to get to know people and ask them questions about themselves. I find it's a great and simple way to start building rapport with others. I also pride myself on my ability to listen more than I talk. I am intentional about hearing out my colleagues and giving their perspectives honest consideration."

"I believe I have strong relationship building skills. I value the opinions of others and try to show respect to them. I find that having a caring attitude and a willingness to learn about others helps build relationships."

What do you feel is your greatest weakness as a neurologist? What are you doing to improve it?

"My greatest weakness is that I don't know how to say no. If someone asks me to do something extra, I always try to do it, even if I am already swamped. I have had to practice boundaries by telling people that I can help if only I can complete my own tasks first."

No one wants to admit a weakness. However, we all have them. Always remember when sharing a weakness, follow up with a strength or an effort that you are using to improve that weakness.

"I think my greatest weakness could be attributed to more than just my specialty. I am not the best at delegating responsibilities. I am learning to look at tasks that need to be completed and to assign them to personnel that are capable. It helps the team function more efficiently."

What are your thoughts regarding using stem cell transplants to treat degenerative neurological disorders?

"I do not have a lot of personal experience with stem cell transplant information. However, I would like to think that I would be supportive of any efforts that may offer hope to victims of any disease process."

Although many people are supportive of stem cell research, the idea of transplants is still a subject of controversy in many circles. It is always wise to speak positively about a subject, even if it may be a controversial subject. The old saying, 'you don't have to agree with progress for progress to happen' is especially true with medicine.

"I feel like anything that we can do to help improve someone's quality of life and provide hope is something we should do."
