About Meeting Planner

August 18th, 2017

Meeting planners coordinate all aspects of events such as professional conferences, conventions and meetings. This involves transportation to and from the location, food service, and more. Meeting planners typically work from their offices and travel to the site of the events that they're planning. They work normal business hours, though they may work more hours and/or on weekends depending on the event that they're planning. Meeting planners need to work well under pressure and at a fast pace. Important skills include interpersonal, organizational, and negotiation skills. Education requirements vary; having a degree in hospitality management or meeting and event management will be advantageous.

Job openings for meeting planners can be found through typical channels like online job boards such as CareerBuilder, Monster, and Indeed. You can also find vacancies through the career portals of hospitality schools. The interview will assess your skills in time management, organization, and others as they relate to your ability to successfully plan an event efficiently in terms of both time and cost. You'll be expected to talk about your prior experience arranging events and all the details of how you did so.

To prepare for an interview for a meeting planner, think about your experience coordinating the logistics of an event, including getting people, food, and equipment to the right place at the right time. Your ability to understand the clients' needs is critical, so find ways to integrate your ability to communicate clearly into examples of how you were able to execute an event to a customer's satisfaction. Think of several things that went wrong and what you did to overcome that obstacle in order to achieve a positive outcome in a timely manner.
