10 Interview Questions With Sample Answers

1.   Describe a time when you needed to escalate an issue. What were your reasons and what was the outcome?

How to Answer

No matter how competent you are as a marketing coordinator, you will encounter problems beyond your control. A successful answer will assure the interviewer that the issue you escalated is time-sensitive and something that could have been prevented by thorough planning. The interviewer will also want to learn that you are clear on the outcomes you expect from the escalation and get the project back on track once the issue is solved.

Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021

Answer Example

"I avoid escalations as much as possible, but I have encountered problems that were impossible for me to solve. One year, I was managing a high-value campaign for the holidays. We only had five business days to turn marketing collateral around -- a minute-long promotional video. Our video editor submitted the first version, but the brief was clearly not followed; it was just way off. It took an entire workday to get this version, so I asked the editor if the edits could be made by the end of the next day. I reviewed the brief thoroughly with the editor.

The next day, the video editor turned in the second version, and it was still not up to par. At this point, I made the call to escalate because we were two workdays out from the deadline, and we were not getting any closer. Thankfully, I got the go-ahead to outsource to a more experienced freelance video editor. We forwarded the brief, and they were able to make the necessary changes. We had some minor adjustments to make, but we made the deadline by a hair."

2.   What is your communication style? Talk about how it helps you to be more effective in your role.

How to Answer

For most marketing departments, the marketing coordinator must keep the team members informed and accountable throughout the course of a campaign. Show the interviewer that you can adapt the way you communicate with different team members, considering the variety in personalities and temperaments you have to deal with.

Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021

Answer Example

"I would describe myself as a versatile communicator. Depending on the situation, I can be assertive, easy-going, and I can also be firm. Most tasks that I handle or delegate are deadline-driven, so that calls for a lot of assertiveness. However, if I need to build rapport with the team, I can be more easy-going. If I'm negotiating with team members, or putting out fires, then I need to be more firm in my language and tone of voice."

3.   How do you ensure that marketing team members are informed with the most recent company and marketing updates?

How to Answer

Marketing Coordinators contribute in many different ways to a marketing department's goals. They must be kept abreast of new company and marketing information. Talk to the interviewer about how you help keep your colleagues informed. A successful response will show that you value goal-setting and information-sharing.

Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021

Answer Example

"In my current role, I hold weekly huddles with the marketing team. During these meetings, we discuss updates on the current campaigns and other marketing activities in the pipeline. I make sure everyone is aware of the target goals for each campaign during kick-offs, but I go over these targets regularly, as well. Further, if there are any company-wide announcements, we also allow time for them. I ensure that we have enough time to get everyone's input so that the communication goes both ways."

4.   Do you prefer to handle things yourself or to delegate to others?

How to Answer

This is the interviewer's way of finding out if you like to micromanage. In the marketing world, resources are often limited, so you may need to roll up your sleeves from time to time. Most likely, the interviewer is looking for someone comfortable delegating tasks to others most of the time. Assure the interviewer that despite your willingness to get your hands dirty, you are still the leader and your focus is to rally the team to complete tasks.

Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021

Answer Example

"I have no problem filling in for tasks, especially when working with small teams. However, I know that my role is to be the captain of the team. If we have an important deliverable and we're behind on time because of a limited number of workers, I'm happy to lend a hand if my bandwidth allows it. However, it's important for the rest of the team to understand that this isn't the norm. Team members or other resources could be missing or unavailable. Before I volunteer myself, though, I'll ensure that it's the last resort and that I've exhausted all means to prevent this from happening."

5.   What do you like and dislike about working with creatives?

How to Answer

As a marketing coordinator, managing or working with creative team members such as writers, graphic designers, and web developers is a certainty. Show the hiring manager that you can relate with personalities that tend to think outside the box. Creatives can be unpredictable and temperamental, so assure the interviewer that you are level-headed and capable of driving a team toward a common goal. In addition, you will also want to emphasize that you can foster a collaborative environment with creatives because they need a lot of room to develop ideas.

Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021

Answer Example

"I like working with creatives because I enjoy the process of ideation. Creatives inspire me to become more resourceful and imaginative in solving problems. I think that they bring color to the working environment. However, it's also true that working with creatives is like constantly herding cats. So, if I'm assigning project tasks, I always make sure to run turnaround times by them and negotiate as needed. I need to always think in realistic terms and get commitments from the team. I ensure them that we all have the same goal: to deliver at the highest standards, at a reasonable time."

6.   Marketing Coordinators can be asked to take on support roles that appear more administrative. What are some administrative tasks that you found to be valuable experiences?

How to Answer

Viewing what appears to be mundane tasks as valuable experiences can be difficult. The interviewer will want to learn that you have a positive attitude about what appear to be menial tasks and that you can see the value in them. Cite a few examples and talk about how such tasks have enriched your career.

Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021

Answer Example

"There are a few administrative tasks that I perform as a marketing coordinator at Acme Agency. One of them was to manage the nitty-gritty of the project management tool. For example, I would check all the tasks to see that everything is categorized correctly. If there are missing fields, I would need to fill them in myself. I don't mind doing these checks because it helps me learn the tool thoroughly, and it has largely improved my tech-savvy. Another administrative task that I like doing is maintaining the mailing list for our company's newsletter. It helps me keep up with contacts, so I know when people leave their companies and keep them in mind for future networking opportunities."

7.   Tell me about your favorite manager (anyone you directly reported to). What qualities did they have that really stood out to you?

How to Answer

The interviewer wants to learn about your leadership style and how others have influenced it. This question also determines your attitude towards leaders and the type of personalities you work well with. When positioning your response, keep the working environment of the marketing field in mind, and address the expectations outlined in the job description.

Answer Example

"The first person that comes to mind is my former marketing director. She was someone who kept herself accessible to subordinates and offered mentorship. She always gave clear and realistic instructions, which is something that has rubbed off on me. I think that in my line of work, being deliberate and thoughtful when giving instructions is crucial. I see myself as the person who holds the marketing team together and keeps track of all the moving pieces. Having worked under my former superior has shown me how important it is to have an open line of communication with everyone."

8.   Talk about the most interesting task you were assigned and what skills you used to complete it successfully.

How to Answer

In many cases, Marketing Coordinators have to 'wear many different hats.' With this question, the interviewer would like to learn that you are enthusiastic about any marketing-related tasks, however new or unusual they may be. Cite an example of a task that most would consider being out of the box for your job, and talk about how you leveraged your skills to overcome the challenge.

Answer Example

"When I was a content analyst at ABC Business, I was once tasked to manage a booth at a cannabis convention. One of the highlights of the event was a contest for different cannabis-infused drinks. The organizers were looking for unbiased judges and found me. At first, I was hesitant but eventually warmed up to the idea. I asked them if I would be able to promote our packaging company in exchange. They said yes, and I was able to give out brochures and calling cards. We won around five new clients from that convention."

9.   How would your colleagues describe your communication style?

How to Answer

Strong communication skills are paramount to be successful in a marketing coordinator role. Answer Example

"I think my former colleagues would describe me as a well-rounded communicator. They would find me very assertive because I need to ensure that tasks are completed on time, at quality, and within budget. However, I do think they would also say that I'm a great listener, as well. I always give others enough time to express themselves, and I'm confident to say that I can read a room well. On top of all that, they would say that I'm very receptive to feedback. In fact, I welcome it, whether it comes from my superiors, my colleagues, subordinates, even vendors."

Answer Example

"During my time at Acme LLC, I was tasked to launch version 2 of a marketing campaign for a webinar. The original webinar didn't get a lot of signups, so the company decided to cancel it. To ensure that we would get enough traction for a successful event, I wanted to determine if we were marketing to the right audience and through the right channel. First, I analyzed the engagement rates for each social media channel on which we were promoting the webinar. Then, I looked at the click-throughs for our email campaign. I found out that the most engagement we had about the webinar was on LinkedIn, and the least was on Instagram. Then, I found out that the most signups tied to the email campaign came from a small business association that we had partnered with before. So, I proposed to invest in LinkedIn more and pull the plug from our Instagram ads. Then, I reached out to the small business association to determine if other similar organizations would benefit from the webinar. They introduced me to their contacts, and I connected with them immediately. Because of my analysis, our webinar signups for version 2 went up by 300%."
