1. Describe a time when you needed to escalate an issue. What were your reasons and what was the outcome?
How to Answer
No matter how competent you are as a marketing coordinator, you will encounter problems beyond your control. A successful answer will assure the interviewer that the issue you escalated is time-sensitive and something that could have been prevented by thorough planning. The interviewer will also want to learn that you are clear on the outcomes you expect from the escalation and get the project back on track once the issue is solved.
Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021
Answer Example
"I avoid escalations as much as possible, but I have encountered problems that were impossible for me to solve. One year, I was managing a high-value campaign for the holidays. We only had five business days to turn marketing collateral around -- a minute-long promotional video. Our video editor submitted the first version, but the brief was clearly not followed; it was just way off. It took an entire workday to get this version, so I asked the editor if the edits could be made by the end of the next day. I reviewed the brief thoroughly with the editor.
The next day, the video editor turned in the second version, and it was still not up to par. At this point, I made the call to escalate because we were two workdays out from the deadline, and we were not getting any closer. Thankfully, I got the go-ahead to outsource to a more experienced freelance video editor. We forwarded the brief, and they were able to make the necessary changes. We had some minor adjustments to make, but we made the deadline by a hair."

2. What is your communication style? Talk about how it helps you to be more effective in your role.
How to Answer
For most marketing departments, the marketing coordinator must keep the team members informed and accountable throughout the course of a campaign. Show the interviewer that you can adapt the way you communicate with different team members, considering the variety in personalities and temperaments you have to deal with.
Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021
Answer Example
"I would describe myself as a versatile communicator. Depending on the situation, I can be assertive, easy-going, and I can also be firm. Most tasks that I handle or delegate are deadline-driven, so that calls for a lot of assertiveness. However, if I need to build rapport with the team, I can be more easy-going. If I'm negotiating with team members, or putting out fires, then I need to be more firm in my language and tone of voice."

3. How do you ensure that marketing team members are informed with the most recent company and marketing updates?
How to Answer
Marketing Coordinators contribute in many different ways to a marketing department's goals. They must be kept abreast of new company and marketing information. Talk to the interviewer about how you help keep your colleagues informed. A successful response will show that you value goal-setting and information-sharing.
Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021
Answer Example
"In my current role, I hold weekly huddles with the marketing team. During these meetings, we discuss updates on the current campaigns and other marketing activities in the pipeline. I make sure everyone is aware of the target goals for each campaign during kick-offs, but I go over these targets regularly, as well. Further, if there are any company-wide announcements, we also allow time for them. I ensure that we have enough time to get everyone's input so that the communication goes both ways."

Behavioral
4. Do you prefer to handle things yourself or to delegate to others?
How to Answer
This is the interviewer's way of finding out if you like to micromanage. In the marketing world, resources are often limited, so you may need to roll up your sleeves from time to time. Most likely, the interviewer is looking for someone comfortable delegating tasks to others most of the time. Assure the interviewer that despite your willingness to get your hands dirty, you are still the leader and your focus is to rally the team to complete tasks.
Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021
Answer Example
"I have no problem filling in for tasks, especially when working with small teams. However, I know that my role is to be the captain of the team. If we have an important deliverable and we're behind on time because of a limited number of workers, I'm happy to lend a hand if my bandwidth allows it. However, it's important for the rest of the team to understand that this isn't the norm. Team members or other resources could be missing or unavailable. Before I volunteer myself, though, I'll ensure that it's the last resort and that I've exhausted all means to prevent this from happening."

5. What do you like and dislike about working with creatives?
How to Answer
As a marketing coordinator, managing or working with creative team members such as writers, graphic designers, and web developers is a certainty. Show the hiring manager that you can relate with personalities that tend to think outside the box. Creatives can be unpredictable and temperamental, so assure the interviewer that you are level-headed and capable of driving a team toward a common goal. In addition, you will also want to emphasize that you can foster a collaborative environment with creatives because they need a lot of room to develop ideas.
Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021
Answer Example
"I like working with creatives because I enjoy the process of ideation. Creatives inspire me to become more resourceful and imaginative in solving problems. I think that they bring color to the working environment. However, it's also true that working with creatives is like constantly herding cats. So, if I'm assigning project tasks, I always make sure to run turnaround times by them and negotiate as needed. I need to always think in realistic terms and get commitments from the team. I ensure them that we all have the same goal: to deliver at the highest standards, at a reasonable time."

6. Marketing Coordinators can be asked to take on support roles that appear more administrative. What are some administrative tasks that you found to be valuable experiences?
How to Answer
Viewing what appears to be mundane tasks as valuable experiences can be difficult. The interviewer will want to learn that you have a positive attitude about what appear to be menial tasks and that you can see the value in them. Cite a few examples and talk about how such tasks have enriched your career.
Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021
Answer Example
"There are a few administrative tasks that I perform as a marketing coordinator at Acme Agency. One of them was to manage the nitty-gritty of the project management tool. For example, I would check all the tasks to see that everything is categorized correctly. If there are missing fields, I would need to fill them in myself. I don't mind doing these checks because it helps me learn the tool thoroughly, and it has largely improved my tech-savvy. Another administrative task that I like doing is maintaining the mailing list for our company's newsletter. It helps me keep up with contacts, so I know when people leave their companies and keep them in mind for future networking opportunities."

"The first person that comes to mind is my former marketing director. She was someone who kept herself accessible to subordinates and offered mentorship. She always gave clear and realistic instructions, which is something that has rubbed off on me. I think that in my line of work, being deliberate and thoughtful when giving instructions is crucial. I see myself as the person who holds the marketing team together and keeps track of all the moving pieces. Having worked under my former superior has shown me how important it is to have an open line of communication with everyone."

8. Talk about the most interesting task you were assigned and what skills you used to complete it successfully.

Cite an example of a task that most would consider being out of the box for your job, and talk about how you leveraged your skills to overcome the challenge.

Answer Example
"When I was a content analyst at ABC Business, I was once tasked to manage a booth at a cannabis convention. One of the highlights of the event was a contest for different cannabis-infused drinks. The organizers were looking for unbiased judges and found me. At first, I was hesitant but eventually warmed up to the idea. I asked them if I would be able to promote our packaging company in exchange. They said yes, and I was able to give out brochures and calling cards. We won around five new clients from that convention."

Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021
Answer Example
"I think my former colleagues would describe me as a well-rounded communicator. They would find me very assertive because I need to ensure that tasks are completed on time, at quality, and within budget. However, I do think they would also say that I'm a great listener, as well. I always give others enough time to express themselves, and I'm confident to say that I can read a room well. On top of all that, they would say that I'm very receptive to feedback. In fact, I welcome it, whether it comes from my superiors, my colleagues, subordinates, even vendors."

Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021
Answer Example
"During my time at Acme LLC, I was tasked to launch version 2 of a marketing campaign for a webinar. The original webinar didn't get a lot of signups, so the company decided to cancel it. To ensure that we would get enough traction for a successful event, I wanted to determine if we were marketing to the right audience and through the right channel. First, I analyzed the engagement rates for each social media channel on which we were promoting the webinar. Then, I looked at the click-throughs for our email campaign. I found out that the most engagement we had about the webinar was on LinkedIn, and the least was on Instagram. Then, I found out that the most signups tied to the email campaign came from a small business association that we had partnered with before. So, I proposed to invest in LinkedIn more and pull the plug from our Instagram ads. Then, I reached out to the small business association to determine if other similar organizations would benefit from the webinar. They introduced me to their contacts, and I connected with them immediately. Because of my analysis, our webinar signups for version 2 went up by 300%."

11. What is your experience in handling multiple campaigns simultaneously? How many is too many?
How to Answer
With this question, the interviewer is assessing how skilled you are at juggling simultaneous campaigns and whether you're able to make sound time-management decisions based on your own bandwidth. Because projects can vary in timeline and scale, base your answer on how much you think you can do within a day or week. Another element you may want to touch on is your ability to say no to projects when you know the quality of your work could be compromised.
Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021
Answer Example
"Managing multiple campaigns is a regular part of my job at 123 company. I don't think there's a hard-and-fast number to say 'too many,' but projects often vary in terms of how much resources they take up versus their impact on revenue. For example, I could be assigned a project scheduled to run for six months and requires just a two-person team. That would probably take up an hour of my day on average. However, if I'm managing a high-value project that's due in two months, I may need to dedicate a huge chunk of my time daily toward it. What I usually do is keep my superiors informed of the progress of each campaign so that they have a better understanding of how I use my time. If needed, I should be able to delegate tasks to other team members and focus on the overall success of each campaign."

12. How do you measure success as a marketing coordinator?
How to Answer
Several key performance indicators apply to marketing coordinators, regardless of industry. Talk to the interviewer about the different KPIs measured in your previous or current role in marketing. A strong response will focus on the few that directly impact business revenue. Expound on how your work directly affects the outcomes and your performance against these success measures.
Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021
Answer Example
"At XYZ LLC, there are three key performance indicators that I have set targets on average campaign return-on-investment (ROI), the total of new qualified leads generated per month, and the cost per lead. Thankfully, the company has very efficient processes to ensure that we do a proper ROI analysis prior to launching campaigns. This helps me focus on the management aspect of my campaigns. I'm also empowered to call out any opportunities for improvement for every campaign that I manage. Historically, I have always hit my targets and oftentimes exceed them."

13. How do you ensure all marketing deliverables are aligned with branding? Talk about what ensuring a consistent voice means to you.
How to Answer
Marketing coordinators oversee the production of marketing collaterals, so it is their duty to ensure brand consistency across all deliverables. The hiring manager will want to learn that you are adept in managing brand strategy tasks. A successful answer will outline a method or process.
Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021
Answer Example
"When all marketing efforts are presented with a similar message through language, colors, and style across channels, the audience will have a much easier time recognizing the brand and understanding what it offers. The first way for me to manage these efforts and ensure consistency is by following the guidelines in the brand book. To me, it's the brand bible that outlines all the rules to follow when representing the brand. Second, a content architecture should be developed following the brand book. It sets the organization and structure of all the different content assets according to the audience's needs. Finally, every marketing organization should have a content calendar. It helps to plan and schedule content, both evergreen and topical. I've managed content calendars for different businesses, and I've used tools like MailChimp, CoSchedule, and Sharpspring."

Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021

"I have managed many different email marketing campaigns for a variety of businesses. The most notable one was for a wedding coordinator. We ran a promotional contest for fall and winter weddings. The winners would win different tiers of wedding packages, including venue design, photography, and the like. The contest was done through the monthly newsletter email. I was in charge of directing the layout for the newsletter through Constant Contact. I was also tasked to put the mailing list together and schedule the publishing. After that job, I've helped run email marketing campaigns through HubSpot and SharpSpring for business audiences."

15. What is your experience in making minor changes to websites?
How to Answer
Because web design is a large part of any digital marketing plan, marketing coordinators need to have high-level knowledge of tasks related to websites. Draw from any experience you may have in making edits to a website, whether uploading an image or changing written content. You don't need to be able to code, but you must understand the website-related tasks enough to delegate tasks to developers and designers.
Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021
Answer Example
"When I was working as a content analyst at XYZ Marketing, we maintained websites for a few clients. We only had one developer in the team, so I took over a few minor ones whenever they had larger time-consuming tasks. One of the websites required a regular export of form submissions. The other one was for a restaurant that would send me changes to the food and beverage menus from time to time. Sometimes, I would need to upload videos and write up descriptions for the same client. During this time, I also learned CSS code for formatting text, rows, and columns. If I were to jump into similar tasks today, I think I would be able to pick it up in a heartbeat."

How to Answer

List the different channels you have experience in and describe your level of involvement in running campaigns for each one. The interviewer will also want to learn about the different tools you utilized and your understanding of success measures associated with social media marketing.
Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021
Answer Example
"In my five years of experience as a marketing analyst, I have managed organic and paid advertising campaigns through social media. Because my work has largely been in the B2B space, the channels I'm most adept at are LinkedIn and Facebook. With LinkedIn, I've conducted audience analysis and ROI analysis. For both channels, I've also managed the content calendars using HubSpot and Buffer. In terms of success measures, I have compiled and presented engagement rate reports, as well as impressions."

Competency
17. Talk about a time when a project was held up, but it was out of your immediate control. How did you handle the situation?
How to Answer
Project management is an important skill for Marketing Coordinators. When timelines go awry, effective project management calls for a contingency plan. A strong answer will outline the steps you took to get the project back on track. Talk to the hiring manager about the different resources available to you and how well you utilized them.
Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021
Answer Example
"Once I was managing a massive direct mail campaign. The order was for 25,000 mailers to be postmarked within a two-week period before Black Friday. After the order went out for the first 10,000 units, I got a call from the printer that their printing facility would be out of order for at least one week due to power supply issues. This would've set us back so much that we would only be able to send the mailers out after Black Friday, which would completely defeat the campaign's purpose. I asked the printer if they could refer us to another printer that would be able to handle the volume, but the only contact they had was a few states away and required way more lead time than we had at that point. So, I called a few smaller printers and asked what their maximum capacity was for short turnaround times. In the end, I worked with three different places to fulfill the order. Although it cost us 10% more than our original printer, we made the time perfectly. Plus, we were able to get extra credit from them."

18. Do you have event planning experience? What did you learn from this experience?
How to Answer
Whether in-person or virtual, event planning could be a major part of a marketing coordinator's job. When citing an example of a successful event that you organized, consider its size and impact. Describe your role thoroughly, and talk about why one would consider it a success.
Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021
Answer Example
"Over the years, I've been involved in numerous events. The most memorable one for me was a holiday party for 1200 employees. I represented the marketing department in the employee engagement team. During the planning stage, I put together concept boards for the party theme and took charge of the collaterals involved, such as the event poster, invites, other promotional items, and even the stage design. On the backend, I volunteered our marketing team to be in charge of the landing page for the event registration, as well as the menu selection. It was very challenging because we had to do the work on top of our daily tasks. I was on the phone with vendors almost every day to go over everything and negotiate prices. The planning took nine weeks in total. Overall, it was a very successful event. We had a turnout rate of 89%. The post-event feedback survey was also highly positive with a 90% satisfaction rate."

19. What is your experience in managing graphic design work?
How to Answer
Graphic design is a major part of the creative work that marketing coordinators manage on a day-to-day basis. Talk to the hiring manager about your know-how and experience in handling graphic design tasks. A strong response will show your depth of knowledge and confidence in the subject.
Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021
Answer Example
"I've always had an interest in graphic design, so I actually took a couple of multimedia courses in college through which I've learned the basics of visual communication. Further, I've also taught myself how to use Adobe Photoshop and Canva. When I started to work in marketing, I did a little bit of editing in Photoshop to support our design team. I believe that I have developed an excellent eye for visual design over the past seven years. While I lean on creative directors for overall strategy, I'm adept at managing the design workflow. I'm highly capable of overseeing tasks to ensure that all our collaterals are cohesive and true to the brand."

20. Talk about how you have helped support business development efforts in your marketing role.
How to Answer
Marketing coordinators in some companies support sales teams. If you have previous experience in this, highlight the different ways in which your marketing activities aligned with sales activities to reach the same goals. Expound by mentioning the tools you used to do so. If none of your previous roles included such tasks, talk about how you hope your future roles might.
Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021
Answer Example
"In my last two jobs, I was lucky enough to work closely with business development teams. Both companies offered services to small businesses. So, whenever we had qualified leads through our marketing campaigns, we would forward them to our salespeople. We in the marketing department made sure to involve them during the development stage of the campaigns, so they knew the messaging and collaterals that our customers were exposed to. They would be the ones that the customers would follow through on any promises and offers we make in our advertisements and promotional content. To close the loop, the business development teams would get back to us with relevant feedback so that we could improve our campaigns moving forward."

21. What do you do to manage your time efficiently?
How to Answer
Because there are so many moving pieces in the day-to-day operations of a marketing team, coordinators get pulled in every direction. The hiring manager wants to learn about how you can allocate time toward your tasks effectively. In your answer, talk about the different tools you leverage to keep yourself on track.
Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021
Answer Example
"I would like to think that I'm a great planner. My calendar is time-boxed. This means that instead of working on one task until it's done, I deliberately schedule it and decide just how much time I have to spend on it. I tend to get anxious looking at a full calendar, so I make sure to also keep certain blocks of time open. I keep track of how much time it takes me to complete repeatable tasks so that I can easily estimate it in the future."

22. Describe a time where you successfully changed someone's opinion. To what do you attribute your success?
How to Answer
Effective communication and persuasion skills are necessary attributes of a Marketing Coordinator. This question is aimed to assess your ability to effect change. In your response, show that you can present facts to support your case.
Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021
Answer Example
"One time at X Consultancy, we were reviewing options for a project management tool. The tool we were using at the time was very affordable, but it had limited capabilities. The functionalities that it lacked not only slowed our teams down it also made it hard to measure the effectiveness of our campaigns.
So, I did my research and found two better options. I pitched both and supported my proposal with testimonials from users, which highlighted how the tool helped increase the company's return-on-investment. I also ran it by the production team, and they were very excited about two capabilities in particular. The first one had the ability to create messaging threads under tasks. This helped streamline feedback. The second feature was proofing directly through the tool. It allowed the creator to upload images and add markups directly on the images. It would help the team reduce the back-and-forth through other channels like email or Slack when going over edit notes. In the end, management picked the tool that had both features."

23. How do you ensure that campaigns are within budget? What is the most challenging part of maintaining a budget?
How to Answer
Marketing campaigns are treated like projects because they are bound by time and cost. The interviewer wants to learn that you have a method for tracking budgets. Describe any related process your organization has in place, if any. If none, then talk about your own process. Further, mention an aspect of budget maintenance that you find the most difficult.
Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021
Answer Example
"At ABC company, we maintain a budget spreadsheet per campaign. During campaign ideation, I work with the team to take the tasks apart and identify the costs associated with each one. For example, if we're planning to run a lead generation campaign, we evaluate how much we should spend on each social media channel. Outside of that, we also need to identify how many collaterals need to be developed and designed and the amount of time our creators would need to put into that work. We use a productivity tool to track our creators' time and understand how long it takes to complete every task associated with the campaign. The most challenging part of maintaining a budget is actually planning. Unless we've run an almost-identical campaign in the past, there's always a risk of underestimating costs."

24. The marketing world is so dynamic. What do you do to keep yourself up-to-date on the latest innovations and technology?
How to Answer
Keeping abreast of new technologies and methodologies is important in the Marketing field. Show the hiring manager that you have your finger on the pulse regarding the latest trends. Talk about how you filter noise out and ensure you retain only information that's significant to your job.
Written by M Cheryl Harkins on August 17th, 2021
Answer Example
"There is so much going on in marketing innovation and technology at any time. I personally follow AdWeek on social media, and I'm also part of a couple of marketing forums. Because I have no time to read through everything, I only pay attention to topics that generally apply to all of the marketing and the few media channels that I use in my job. For example, my work doesn't involve a lot of video production, so I don't keep up with that topic. However, if there's a significant update concerning advertising on YouTube as a channel, then that's something that I would pay attention to."

In addition, I have experience in managing lead generation campaigns through Pardot and Salesforce Marketing Cloud."
