"I haven't worked this job long enough to know what part is my least favorite. But, based on what I know, I think the part I will not like too much is missing holidays with my family. I knew getting into healthcare it was part of the job, though, so it does not come as a surprise. I will just need to adjust when I spend holidays and other special occasions with my family."

"In my first position out of college, I worked with a person who enjoyed gossip in the workplace. I found that I could redirect her to work by giving a quick reply and then asking her a pointed work question, which would get her back on task. There were a few key takeaways from this experience. I learned how to concentrate among chatter or disruption better than before, and I perfected my skills at refocusing someone else on the task at hand."

If you offered online services, that could attract more patients and help with the parking issue at the same time."

"No, I will pass both with flying colors. I had a criminal background check before entering my MRI program two years ago, and it went well. I have never done drugs and do not plan to, so my drug test will come back negative."

"No, there is no reason I will not pass either the background or drug test. I do not do drugs and have never committed a crime or even had a parking or speeding ticket."

However, I would like to disclose that I had an issue with bad credit after going through a divorce that affected my credit for five years. My credit score is back in the excellent range, but I wanted to let you know about that in case it showed up in the background check. Regarding the drug test, I will have no problem passing that as I do not use drugs."

Do you plan on retiring as an MRI Techologist?

"As a recent graduate just starting my career, it's hard to think that far ahead! But, if you are asking me if I have thought of pursuing another career or if I plan to continue as an MRI Tech, I plan to work in this profession my entire career."

"While attending school, we trained specifically on Philips Brilliance scanners. I am an intermediate user of this equipment. Are there particular pieces of imaging equipment that you would like to see me trained in?"

There are many different types and brands of imaging equipment out there. While all very similar, some equipment may have a higher learning curve than others. The interviewer would like to know more about the specific imaging equipment you are experienced with to determine if you will need additional training if hired. Be specific and include your years of experience along with your skill level. Using words like beginner, intermediate, advanced, and expert can help the interviewer to understand your skill level further. You can then ask what types of machines are used in their facility. Be sure to mention how you are a quick learner if you require training on their machines.

"I have specific experience working with Toshiba Aquilion 64 and Philips Brilliance scanners. I have used Carestream PACS software programs but am only a beginner level in those. I am a quick learner and am comfortable learning new technologies as needed. Which equipment do you primarily use here?"

"I have been trained on a wide variety of equipment, and through my fifteen years of being an MRI Technologist, I have also trained junior technologists. Could you share with me the particular pieces of equipment that you use? I am happy to go into further details on my experience level on each."

"I have experience with a wide range of equipment. I was trained on the GE 1.5T equipment and I worked with it for about 6 years. I also have a good grasp of Siemens equipment which is actually my most recently acquired hands-on knowledge of MRI equipment. I did have a beginner idea on Philips. What do you enjoy most about working with patients?

"The aspect I enjoy most about working with patients is the fact that I can be a part of their diagnosis. Nobody enjoys being sick, and knowing that my expertise can help them receive some answers is so satisfying."

Do you prefer doing work on a routine day-to-day basis or do you prefer mixing up your routine occasionally?

"I am comfortable either way, but I know I would grow bored if nothing ever changed. I worked for a short time in a factory before going to school to become an MRI Technologist, and the monotony of the job made me lose interest very quickly."

As an MRI Technologist, every day can differ depending on the patients and scheduled procedures. Some days may consist of routine scans, while others may involve more complex cases or emergency situations. The interviewer wants to know if you prefer to know what the routine will be or if you thrive on the challenge and excitement of unpredictability. Since you chose a career in healthcare, you most likely prefer the unpredictability of your job, as there are no days that are exactly the same in your line of work. How do you fill your downtime during a shift?

"I cannot imagine having downtime in a hospital environment. However, if I were faced with downtime, I would take that as an opportunity to learn a greater skill or ask to shadow a more experienced technologist."

During downtime, MRI techs typically use the opportunity to catch up on paperwork and administrative tasks, sanitize and clean equipment, and ensure that everything is ready for the next patient. Some may even take the chance to grab a quick snack or stretch their legs with a short walk. Downtime is an excellent opportunity for MRI techs to recharge and prepare for the next round of patients.The interviewer wants to know how you stay busy when you have downtime. You must show that you can remain productive with little guidance. This is an opportunity to highlight your strong work ethic and commitment to team performance.

"Typically, my work day is pretty packed with patient treatments. However, if I have downtime, I try to complete the clerical duties that need to be done by the team. We always have information that needs to be documented in patient charts, so I sit down at the computer and get this handled during a quiet period. I may also ask my supervisor if she has anything I can help with."

"If there is downtime, I will take that as an opportunity to train a junior technologist. Every moment is a chance to learn something new, and I am committed to making myself and my team better at every opportunity. If there is no one to train, I will take care of any administrative tasks or anything else that needs to be taken care of."

Do you prefer day or evening shifts? Also, do you have an issue working holidays and weekends if needed?

"I would prefer the day shift, as that is all I have ever worked. However, I can work the night shift if needed. And no, I do not have an issue working holidays and weekends. I entered this field knowing I would work an odd schedule, so that is to be expected."

"No, I am used to working weekends and holidays, so that is not an issue. As far as day or evening shifts, I like a variety of both. How do you handle a larger-than-average workload?

"Coming into this job, I fully understand that having a large workload is part of this type of work. When faced with a large workload, I will prioritize my work and enlist additional resources where necessary. After spending the last few years in the technology program, I became used to handling a large workload and have excellent organizational and time-management skills, which will transfer nicely to this position."

What is the most difficult part of being an MRI Technologist?

"I am new to my career as an MRI Technologist and believe the most challenging aspect will be learning all of the new software when entering a new position. Although it will be difficult, I am tech-savvy and up for a challenge."

One of the most significant difficulties is handling patients who are claustrophobic or have anxiety disorders. These individuals may experience extreme discomfort or panic attacks during an MRI scan, which can be challenging. Furthermore, operating the intricate equipment used during MRI scans requires specialized training, which can be time-consuming to learn. Other challenges can be operational or administrative, such as having outdated equipment, management not supporting you and your colleagues, or being on call.The interviewer wants to know your biggest challenge as an MRI Technologist. There may be many complex parts of this job, but choose one focus so that you don't go off on a tangent about all the things you dislike. If possible, have one strong example and also show how you have overcome the difficulty of this task. "When I began as an MRI Tech, the most difficult part of my job was juggling all of my supervisor's daily tasks and expectations. "Over my eight-year career as an MRI Technologist, I have found that the most difficult aspect is keeping up with the changes in the industry. Any aspect of healthcare offers constant change, so it requires a great amount of diligence to keep up. "In my 8-year career as an MRI Tech, the constant advancements in technology and MRI software have been a bit challenging but doable. change may be a bit tasky but with time I have learned that it is imperative and MRI techs can't do without so I have adopted it as a lifestyle and makes sure I am up to date. I do not just get home each day to sleep, I study and peruse the internet."

"Staying on your schedule, I work for a busy practice and patients often need to stop the exam, go to the rest room, and patients are late. I suggested we leave an open 30 min slot in the afternoon to catch up."

Are you comfortable with administering an IV?

"I have not yet administered IVs; however, I am excited to learn more and perfect the task."

The interviewer wants to know more about your skills. As an MRI Technologist, you may be responsible for administering IVs for special dye tests. Don't oversell yourself when answering this question. If you genuinely are not comfortable starting IVs, then say so. However, include that you are working to overcome this challenge, as this could be a deal breaker for the interviewer if you cannot start IVs. Let the interviewer know that you use every opportunity to practice and shadow other MRI Technologists.

"Yes, I'm getting better at administering IVs. I take every opportunity to administer and watch others so that one day soon I'm not intimidated by the task."

"Yes, I am very comfortable with that. I have never had an issue administering IV. I have done it many times and even taught student techs at some point in my career."

What part of your job do you enjoy the most?

"I enjoy helping patients feel at ease during their scans. Being able to provide them with the necessary information and instructions before the procedure can help alleviate their anxiety, and it's incredibly rewarding to see them relax and feel more comfortable as a result. Additionally, I find it fascinating to see the detailed images that the MRI machine produces and to be able to assist in diagnosing and treating various medical conditions. I am excited I found a career where I can make a difference in people's lives."

What type of equipment are you most familiar with?

"As an MRI technician, I am highly experienced in working with various types of MRI equipment. I have knowledge and familiarity with both open MRI machines and high-field MRI machines. When determining which machine to use for a specific patient, I prioritize their comfort and safety while ensuring the highest quality images possible. If you have machines different than I am used to working with, I can assure you I will quickly pick up how to operate your facility's equipment."

As an MRI Technologist, you understand there are different types of MRI equipment utilized in medical imaging. The closed MRI machine is a cylindrical tube where the patient lies while the images are taken, while the open MRI machine is more comfortable for those who are claustrophobic. In addition, high-field MRI machines produce clearer images, while low-field MRI machines are less powerful but still effective for certain types of scans. Lastly, portable MRI machines can be brought directly to the patient, such as in emergency or military situations. The specific type of MRI equipment utilized depends on the patient's needs and the purpose of the scan, as each type has its advantages and disadvantages.In preparation for this interview, list out all of the equipment and MRI software you have been trained on. "In school and on the job, I have been trained on various MRI software and equipment in my career and am comfortable with closed MRI, open MRI, and wide-bore MRI equipment. In my current role, I primarily use an open MRI machine. However, I am a quick learner and always open to learning new equipment as needed."

"I have been an MRI Technologist for thirteen years. In those years, I believe I have used every MRI machine available. Could you give me a rundown of the equipment types you use at this facility? I would be happy to go into further detail on my experience with those."

"I am familiar with both the open and closed-bore MRI scanners although I am most experienced with the closed ones. I have also as a student experienced the use of extremity-dedicated machines but have only seen them used for the forearm. Which types of equipment do you have in this facility?"

"All different types of scanners."

How many days were you absent from work last year?

"I cannot recall the exact number, but I think it was around three days total due to illness. All absences were excused and with notice."

A part of being a diligent employee is ensuring you are always on time and present when expected. It's great to even be 10 minutes early rather than just showing up right on the dot. Talk to the interviewer about your attendance in the past year so they can determine if your work attendance is up to par for their organization. If you were absent from work, explain why and how your absence was for scheduled vacation, personal time off, or excused for another reason.

"I had zero unexcused absences last year. I took 12 vacation days out of my 15 allotted days. In addition, I was sick for two, and a note from my doctor accompanied those. Once, I was late due to a terrible snowstorm, but I notified my employer and was not the only one late that day. Generally, I always try to be at least 10 to 15 minutes early for my shift."

"I think I missed ten days, counting vacation time. Of those, five were for my vacation. For three days, I was excused under a doctor's note. The other two absences were pre-approved family days."

"My last work from last year would be the most recent one which was my clinical placement that lasted for 4-5 months and not one day was on record for absence."

How do you calm a patient with claustrophobia?

"I think the best way to calm a patient with claustrophobia is to acknowledge their fears and discuss them openly. For example, I will share my fear of needles and let them know that I breathe through it, close my eyes, and think about a great memory or vacationing on a sandy beach."

The fear of tight spaces that patients have during an MRI procedure is common. The interviewer wants to understand how you calm these patients, showing your communication, critical thinking, and empathy skills. "I have found that having a light-hearted conversation with the patient before their treatment is a great way to calm them and establish a sense of comfort. I love to ask if they have been to any delicious restaurants lately or have a vacation booked. Sometimes, the patients will tell me about their family traditions or how much they love to cook. Before you know it, they are at ease during this uncomfortable time."

"If a patient is feeling uncomfortable or anxious, it can affect the result of the MRI. Therefore, I will talk my patients through their feelings and assure them they are in good hands. I will ask them what the source of the fear is, and if they share that with me, I can talk them off the ledge."

"As the patient fears of entering into an enclosed surface and scanning such patients would be difficult due to their movement, which may cause motion artifacts so I would approach myself to the patient to go through their feeling to calm them or I can play music according to their choice. I can talk them off the ledge."

"Knowing that it is more psychological, I try to reassure them and have them tell me the source of their fear. I have found out from experience that if they talk about it, it lightens them. I let them know that they are in charge also of the exam and can use the call bell. They also get to know that I will be with them, watching over the camera and checking in on them from time through the exam."

"I give them music, earplugs, blindfolds, and aromatherapy, and put them in feet first when I can."

What is your greatest weakness?

"In my experience, I have found that overthinking can be a challenge. It's important to balance analysis with action, so I practice mindfulness and rely on my instincts to help me make decisions and move forward."

The management transferred the award to her. I was fine with it till she became a stranger to me. It still hurts but I can't change it."

Have you ever had an ethical dilemma at work?

"Yes, I had an ethical dilemma while doing my internship. I had a patient who I had gone to high school with and had a secret crush on for years. She had never given me the time of day in school but asked me out to dinner after I was finished with her images. We were both single, and I had always admired her, but I had to refuse her offer since she was a patient of mine. Keeping work separate from my personal life is more important, and I would never date a patient."
