Have you ever considered going back to school and obtaining a higher/different degree?

"I have considered going back to college a few times, but at this point in my life, research is my passion. I feel I am already in an industry that is important and growing. I feel like, if I were to take any additional classes, I would want them to be something that would add value to the education and experience I have now."

There are people who choose a career and later return to school. Some have the objective to get a higher degree in the same field or to change careers altogether. This question gives the interviewer an opportunity to know you and what your future plans may be. In turn, your answer allows the interviewer the chance to see where you may fit within your organization now and in the future. If you have thoughts of continuing your education, don't be afraid to share that with the interviewer. Just remember to point out why you feel you would be an asset to your organization now.

"I love lab technology and am comfortable where I am, at this point in my career. I have considered in years to come, when I am older, I may transition slightly into the realm of education within hematology. For now, though, I am very happy with what I am doing."

Tell me about a time you were trusted with confidential information.

"I am expected to keep all information confidential every day, so there is not just one instance that I can refer to. I believe in practicing within legal and ethical bounds and keeping patient's confidence is one way I do that."

Working within the medical career field you are trusted with sensitive information each day. Don't fall into this trap and answer this question with a story containing confidential information, people will view your answer negatively and view you as not being trustworthy. If you choose to tell about a situation be sure to be vague and not use names or too many details.

"I'm trusted with confidential information every day. I make a point to leave my work at work and not discuss patients outside of the office. By not discussing confidential information about the patients I'm ensuring that I'm not breaking any rules and giving information to those that are not on a need to know basis."

"Every day I work is an example of me being trusted with confidential information. HIPAA regulations were set in place with good reason and I appreciate the idea behind them. I strive to stay well within the bounds of legality with regard to patient privacy."

How would your last supervisor describe you?

"My last supervisor would describe me as dependable and hardworking. I feel confident that I would receive a very good reference from him."

The interviewer is asking this question to hear positive impacts you've made at your last job. Tell the interviewer that you were punctual, never called out sick and were dependable. Think of the traits that make an ideal employee in the eyes of a boss. Added bonus if your boss will write a letter of recommendation for you.

"My boss would describe me as a hard worker, motivated and consistent. I always strive to exceed expectations when I can, and I feel like I've done a good job following through by meeting deadlines and completing projects as they were assigned."

"My previous employer would give me a good recommendation. I worked there for X years and was always given good evaluations. I believe she would say I am a hard worker and motivated. I also believe she would tell you that I am a good team player and try to keep the other members of our team motivated."

How do you respond to an emergency situation at work?

"That really depends on the situation. I always try to remember to remain as calm as possible and report to my designated area as quickly as possible and follow emergency protocol."

Depending on the situation, you will want to respond quickly and make yourself available to assist the doctor in any way you can. Be aware of the surroundings and also observe the patient. Your best response will be one where you are sensitive to the situation by listening closely to the doctor and nurses involved. There may not be anything you can do to help, but if you get in the way, you could definitely create more problems. Ask what you can do and pay attention. If you need to step aside, be respectful and understanding.

"If an emergency were to arise, I would wait patiently for the doctors orders and assist her or him in whatever she or he needs."

"There can be any number of emergency situations in a healthcare facility, so how I would respond would be dependent upon what type of emergency it is. First and foremost is the safety of patients and employees. I would make sure no one is in immediate danger and follow any emergency protocol, per facility instruction."

What are some things that you would like people you meet to notice about your personality?

"I would like for people to feel that I am genuine and easy to get along with. Life can be stressful, but we don't have to dwell on difficult things. I want to people to see that, no matter what may be going on whether at home or work, I have a positive attitude and a good work ethic."

Personality and character are closely related. For instance, someone with an honest character or good work ethic will tend to be more open about his or her beliefs as well as personal and professional expectations. The interviewer is looking for ques as to what character you may bring to the table, so to speak. It is important to remember, body language speaks volume and eye contact is a big indicator of your self-esteem, and your self-esteem is reflected outwardly in your personality. Be confident when you answer and make eye contact with the interviewer.

"I would describe my personality as approachable, light-hearted, and positive. I like to give more than I take and pride myself on being part of a team."

Have you ever heard of the 'kick and kill' approach with regard to cell depletion?

"I have heard the term 'kick and kill' but I am not really familiar with what it involves. If time allows, I would love to hear some information about it."

Interviewers do not expect you have a perfect understanding of every trial or every bit of information that is available. If you are asking about something that you are not familiar with, say so, but show an interest in learning. This tells the interviewer that you are not intimidated by those who may know a little more than you and that you are willing to learn, which is what research is about.

"Yes, I am aware of the 'kick and kill approach.' This is a one-two combination of activating latent HIV infected cells followed by targeting the infected cells for elimination. If this is successful, it could lead to some great advances in curing HIV. It does require strict laboratory monitoring."

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

"You know, I've been so caught up in school and work that I haven't really taken the time to create a bucket list of things I'd like to do. When I was younger, I always wanted to visit Australia. I think that will be one of the first place I would go."

Employers realize that there is life outside of work. Getting to know employees/potential employees and what interests them gives employers an opportunity to develop a relationship with them. Share what you like. Have you been to a destination you'd like to return to? Is there somewhere you've always dreamed of going? This is also an opportunity for you to get to know the employer. Ask questions to show your interest in building a relationship.

"Without a doubt, I would go to Italy! I have always wanted to travel and Italy will be one of the first places I go to once I have time to go and really experience it! Have you ever been to another country?"

"When I was younger, I went on a mission trip to Brazil. I have always wanted to return and spend time with the missionaries who are still there. I came back with such an appreciation for the opportunities and conveniences that we have here. What about you? Have you ever traveled abroad?"

What sets you apart from other neurologists, and why are you the best candidate for us?

"I believe my dedication to my studies and the compassion that I have for my patients is something that will make me an asset if I am given the opportunity to work here."

This is your chance to tell someone what makes you a better choice. However, remember that being confident and being conceited have a fine line of separation. Highlight your strengths, but remember to be humble.

"I am passionate about learning more about laboratory technology and want to work in a place where I can stay for the long-term and become a strong part of a team."

"I am sure every candidate for this position will feel that he is the better choice for the job. I have (x) years of experience in this field. I believe my experience will speak for itself if I am offered this position."

Clinical Lab Technicians in our facility may be asked to work on rotation. Are you prepared to work evenings, weekends, overtime and holidays as required?

"I am a single mom with two school-aged children. Ideally, the day shift would be a better fit for me. This would allow me to fulfill both my work and home responsibilities without a conflict. However, I am willing to work additional shifts, as needed."

Being flexible with the schedule you are willing to work is always a plus. However, many people work more than one job or have a one parent home which requires them to have a flexible schedule. Others simply prefer to work one shift rather than another. Being up front with the interviewer about what schedule suits your preference could help prevent conflict later on. It is easier to plan a schedule you can agree on than it is to fix problems that arise due to fear of being rejected. Be honest and direct.

"I am not married and have no children at this time. So, I am pretty flexible with my schedule. If I had a choice, I would prefer the late shift, as I am a bit of a night owl. However, I am excited about the opportunity to become a part of this team and am willing to work where I'm needed."

"Yes, I am prepared to work that type of schedule. My family and I always plan special events around my work schedule. Also, part of us giving back has always been that I like to offer to work some extra time for those who have small children or other responsibilities."

What are some things that you do to help promote balance in your life?

"I really enjoy working out at the gym and, I also take a kickboxing class twice weekly. After a good workout or class, I always feel like I can rest better and wake up energized and ready for the next day."

No matter what profession a person chooses, everyone needs some time to unwind and relax. Psychologists today say that a healthy balance in life allows a person to recharge and refocus which can result in better productivity at work. The interviewer simply wants to know what you do for you. Maybe you have a favorite pass-time or hobby. This is yet another way for the interviewer to get to know you as a person.

"One of my favorite pass-times is writing. After a busy day at work, I like to journal or write articles for a blog that I author. Both of these forms of writing allow me to release any feelings of frustration I may experience, especially after a stressful day or a difficult situation at work. The writings in my journal are private and my way of 'letting it all out.' The blog articles, on the other hand, are my way of using creative writing to share stories with my followers."

How do you handle stressful situations?

"When I am under pressure on the job, I focus on the task at hand and do my best not to get distracted."

Stress management will be essential for you to be able to handle tight deadlines, long hours and demanding patients. Before answering this question, think of some tools that have helped you manage your stress. What will you do when you can't take a break when you need it? How will you stay calm when dealing with those challenging personalities? Share any helpful techniques that you use every day to remain clear-headed in some of the most stressful scenarios.

"I've learned not to take words or actions of stressed patients personally. Even when I'm feeling rushed or overwhelmed by a deadline and being pulled in too many directions, I can ground myself knowing that I'm providing the best customer service and caring for my patients the best way that I can."

"I think we all experience stress on different levels and from various triggers. For me, being self-aware has played a big role in my personal stress management. If I have things that I know need to be done on a specific day, I try to create a list and prioritize the order in which those things should be done. I also try to factor in time for things that may be unexpected, for instance an emergency blood draw, and try to stay focused on each assignment. Learning to stay focused is a big stress reliever in and of itself."

Has there ever been a time that you had a disagreement with a co-worker, and if so, how was it resolved?

"I am usually a very soft-spoken person and strive to be the 'peacekeeper.' I can't recall any specific incident of a disagreement."

Any time you work with someone else, there is a chance of having a disagreement about something at one time or another. The interviewer knows this. It's human nature for people to have their own opinions. What is important to the interviewer in this question is whether or not you are willing to compromise and work through difficult situations with your co-workers. Being unwilling to compromise or find alternative solutions to a dispute can affect everyone on the team, even if it is indirectly. Sharing a personal experience is OK, but do not embellish it to 'be the hero.'

"I believe if we think about it, each of us could remember at least one disagreement with a friend or co-worker. Although I consider myself to be pretty easy-going, I am also very passionate about my patients and the care that they receive. I have been aware of disagreements between other co-workers, but really like to think of myself as more of a peacekeeper. I feel like professional people should be able to discuss things logically and come to an agreement that is satisfactory for everyone involved."

"I think the most common disagreement between myself and others have involved our personal feelings about how healthcare should be carried out. However, I have learned, as have most of the people that I have worked with, that while our opinions are important, plans of care are designated by strict guidelines and with the input of everyone on the care team as well as the patient. Learning to respect those guidelines and patient wishes usually resolves issues that arise"

Have you ever worked in an environment in which your co-workers were from diverse backgrounds?

"The largest diverse group I worked with was probably when I did my clinical rotation at University Medical Center. I was afforded the opportunity to meet people from different cultures, religions, and professional backgrounds. It gave me an eye-opening experience of how many wonderful people there are!"

What are some ways that technicians can prevent making mistakes when performing venipunctures?

"Identifying a patient by having him, or a parent, tell me his name and date of birth is the first way I can think of to avoid a mistake."

It is imperative to avoid mistakes when drawing blood. The interview wants to know that you understand safety measures to take to prevent mistakes. Share your knowledge.

"I understand that avoiding mistakes is important and believe following the simple rule of verifying information is the best way to do so."

"There are several ways to avoid making mistakes. The most logical and easiest are identifying a patient by having him state his name and date of birth, verify that the name on the patient's armband matches what the patient says and the orders I have."

"A CMP is a test that helps monitor the fluid and electrolytes within a patient's body. It is important to help determine if there is some type of imbalance, such as with blood sugar or calcium levels."

The comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP) is a blood test that gives doctors information about the body's fluid balance, levels of electrolytes like sodium and potassium, and how well the kidneys and liver are working. Describe your understanding of a CMP and what it includes to the interviewer.

"A CMP is used to check a body's fluid and electrolyte balance. Calcium, sodium, and potassium are some of the levels that are checked with this test."

"A complete metabolic profile or CMP, is used to check or monitor the fluid balance and electrolyte levels in a patient's body. Certain parts of the profile can indicate if there are issues with how the kidney, liver, or pancreas are working. For instance, if alkaline phosphatase , alanine aminotransferase , aspartate aminotransferase, and bilirubin are elevated, this can be a sign of a problem with the liver."

What is an A1C test used for and what do the different results indicate?

"An A1C level helps determine if a patient has diabetes. It can show whether a person is pre-diabetic or actually has developed diabetes, depending on the level."

The A1C test is a common blood test used to diagnose type 1 and type 2 diabetes and then to gauge how well a patient is managing diabetes. Taking the time to know what a test is for, rather than simply drawing blood and sending it over to the lab, shows the interviewer that you have a true interest in your job as a clinical lab tech.

"An A1C level is used to help diagnose a patient with diabetes. An A1C level of 6.5 percent or higher on two separate occasions indicates that a patient has diabetes."

"An A1C level is used to determine if a patient has diabetes. A result of 6.5 percent or higher on two separate occasions indicates diabetes. A result between 5.7 and 6.4 percent is considered prediabetes, which indicates a high risk of developing diabetes. For most people who have previously diagnosed diabetes, an A1C level of 7 percent or less is a common treatment target."

Do you feel you have strong relationship building skills?

"I do feel like I have good relationship building skills. I like people and enjoy getting to know them."

"I have often been complimented on my relationship building skills. I like to get to know people and ask them questions about themselves; I find it's a great and simple way to start building rapport with others. I consider myself to be a strong relationship builder and take pride in my 'people skills'."

"I believe I have strong relationship building skills. I value the opinions of others and try to show respect to them. I find that having a caring attitude and a willingness to learn about others helps build relationships."

How would you deal with an angry patient, and why?

"I think it is important to try and find out what has made the patient mad. If it is something such as not being called as quickly as he had expected, a simple explanation regarding what caused the delay may help calm him."

Knowing how you will handle a difficult situation will tell the interviewer if you have the the right attitude for this job. Being a clinical lab technician means you have to deal with people from very different backgrounds and with varying personalities. Give the interviewer an example of how you would handle an angry patient.

"I believe acting calmly and speaking rationally is a great way to calm someone who is angry and I try to be the voice of reason without making someone feel that I am belittling them."

"There are a couple of different approaches and safety is, of course, the most important thing to consider. If I were to try and perform a venipuncture on someone who is angry, he could become combative which could result in injury to him, to me, or to both of us. I feel the best approach is to ask what has made the patient upset and try to resolve the underlying cause, if at all possible."

What is the purpose of a platelet aggregation test and what color tube would you use to collect the specimen?

"This test is done to check the ability of platelets to form clumps and produce a clot. The specimen is collected in a light blue topped tube."

A platelet aggregation test checks how well a patient's platelets clump together to form blood clots. If platelets are not functioning properly, a person could hemorrhage to death if he experiences a traumatic injury. Share your knowledge of why this test is important with the interviewer.

"Aggregation is a term used to describe the clumping together of platelets which is essential for proper clotting when a person experiences some kind of cut or other wound that causes bleeding. A light blue top tube is used."

"A physician may order an aggregation test if the patient is exhibiting symptoms of a bleeding disorder, abnormal platelet function, or low platelet count. Symptoms may include may include excessive bleeding, excessive bruising, bleeding from the nose or gums, or excessive menstrual bleeding. The test will show whether or not platelets are properly clumping together to form clots. The blood sample is collected in a light blue topped tube containing buffered 3.2% sodium citrate, which is then mixed gently immediately upon filling."

If you were the person responsible for hiring new employees, what qualities would you look for in a candidate, and do you think you possess those qualities?

"We all possess different qualities and that is what makes a great team. If I were responsible for interviewing and hiring new employees,I would look for someone who has a genuine interest in the job and a desire to grow and learn. None of us knows every thing there is to know about each disease or treatment. Being willing to learn and share what we've learned with one another makes us a better team and benefits our patients and those who will need care in the future."

There is more than one reason for asking this question. First, the interviewer wants to know what qualities you think are important to perform this job. Second, and most importantly, your answer will tell the interviewer if you hold yourself to the same standard as you do others. If you want to see certain characteristics in your peers, you should be able to tell the interviewer with confidence that you possess those traits, as well. This question is one that interviewers often use to distinguish sincerity on the part of the candidate.

"I believe that honesty is important no matter what job title a person holds. I have found that being honest with people creates an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect. Those qualities, I feel, are essential when building rapport with patients and co-workers."

What would you describe as your biggest weakness?

"One of my weaknesses is that I often get nervous around people I don't know. I know we all do that to a certain degree, but for me, it has become something that I am aware of. I now try to attend social activities where I know there are going to be opportunities to meet new people so that I can overcome social anxiety."

"I feel I have the education and skills necessary to become an asset to your organization and I believe, given the opportunity, I can prove that."

Discuss the reasons why will you be great at this job. Talk about your qualifications and skills that will help you to do this job well. "I know I will be successful in this role because I have been working in this industry for five years with great training and mentorship. I have a solid understanding of X, Y, and Z (skills listed in the job description). Also, I have all of my updated certifications as outlined in your job description. I am well-prepared for this next step in my career."

"I believe my success with your organization will come from having all of the hard skills that you are looking for, whether learned in school or gained through work experience. I know all the key players in this region and stay informed of best practices."

Would you ever consider relocation? If so, what areas are you open to?

"I am definitely open to relocation. I am eager to find a place that I can grow and learn from others with more experience."

While relocation may not be a determining factor for employment, larger companies almost always ask this question. The important thing to remember is, if you are 100% confident that you are willing to relocate, answer yes. However, if there is any hesitation, there are ways to answer this question without an emphatic NO.

"I have never really thought about relocating. However, I think it would be something I would consider within reason."

"I recently became engaged. Although we have not set a date yet, we have agreed to wait twelve months before the marriage. My fiance' just passed the Bar exam here and has been offered an opportunity to join an existing law firm. Presently, our plans are to stay where we are and build a career, not just work a job. Also, we do not plan on having children for at least two years after our marriage. We both feel that being able to become established in our careers and save for our future would be the responsible thing to do before starting a family."

"I have no plans of relocating and all of my family live close by. I have traveled before and have come to a place in my life where I want to find a stationary position and grow with a company."

What is an ANA used for?

"An ANA helps to show if a patient has a disease such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus."

There are several different types of lab tests. Knowing what these tests are and what they could indicate is an important skill for a clinical lab technician. Share your knowledge with the interviewer.

"An ANA or antinuclear antibiody test is used to help indicate autoimmune disorders such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis."

"Antinuclear antibody (ANA) test is done to help doctors diagnose an autoimmune disorder. An auto-immune disorder is best described as cells of the body that mistake other cells as foreign and they attack those cells. One example is Rheumatoid Arthritis."

Why is a discard tube necessary when drawing a light blue top?

"Using a discard tube helps to empty any air out of the butterfly tubing which allows the light blue top to be filled with the appropriate amount of blood."

Understanding the order of the draw and why a discard tube is necessary is crucial to performing a clinical ljob. Explain your understanding of the necessity of a discard tube to the interviewer.

"A light-blue top tube that will be used for coagulation testing must be filled to completion. Under-filling the tube changes the ratio of blood to anticoagulant. This can affect the accuracy of coagulation tests that are performed using this specimen. If a winged blood collection device (butterfly) is used to collect a light-blue top tube for coagulation studies, a waste tube should be drawn first. If the air is not displaced from the tubing into a waste tube, it will be drawn into the tube used for testing and cause a short-fill of the tube. Less volume of blood in the tube alters the required blood to anticoagulant ratio needed for coagulation studies."

What is PKU and when is it normally diagnosed?

"PKU is a disease that causes a baby's inability to break down phenyalinine which is found in protein. It causes problems with metablism."

PKU is a rare genetic condition that affects metabolism. A person with PKU can't create the enzyme tht is needed to break down phenylalanine, which is found in protein. A PKU test is a routine test performed on all babies in the US. The interviewer wants to know that you understand the importance of this test.

"PKU is one of the tests done as part of a newborn's routine health screening. It helps determine the presence of phenylalanine in the blood, which should be broken down if metabolism is normal."

"Every baby in the United States is tested for PKU as part of newborn screenings. It is a genetic condition that affects a baby's metablism, namely the ability to break down phenylalanine which is a protein. Amino Acids, which are the building blocks of protein, regulate all metabolic processes within the human body. If PKU builds up in the blood it can cause damage. While there is no cure, there is treatment."

What is an HIV test window?

"HIV test window is the time between infection with HIV until the virus actually shows up in a blood test."

Understanding things such as test window and what it means is crucial when working with blood. The interviewer wants to know what knowledge you have of HIV and what may happen during this 'test window' time.

"The HIV test window is used to describe the time between when the patient becomes infected with HIV until the appearance of the detectable antibodies of the virus."

"The HIV test window is a period of about 14-21 days, but in some cases up to 12 weeks. This is the period during which a blood sample from an HIV patient will show no sign of HIV, meaning he will test negative for the infection. After the HIV window period, the virus can be detected in a blood sample."

Do you feel you are capable of being a good team player?

"I definitely feel like I am capable of being a good team player. I am easy to get along with and am eager to learn from those with more experience."

Unless you work in a job where you have no human contact or interaction, being able to work well within a team is a crucial skill. Describe what makes you feel like you are a good team player to the interviewer.
