"I'm impressed with the culture of productivity and passion for the products and services you provide. I know I can be a valuable resource to your company by helping you optimize your CAD processes. At my last company, I helped streamline CAD drawing and layering processes that helped significantly boost productivity. In collaboration with our design team, I helped develop a new system for CAD team collaboration, which led to a 34% decrease in drawing errors."

We discussed our challenges and lack of efficiency, and how we could change how we handled the account on a day-to-day basis, in order to keep the business. From this situation, I learned the importance of being mindful of client relations and operations, not just after issues arise, but for the duration of the relationship. As a result, other team managers adopted my check-in and management processes, and have also seen improved results with their accounts."

When interviewers ask you this interview question, they want to know about the struggles you've faced in your previous jobs and how you overcame them. They also want to assess your problem-solving skills, which will give them an idea of how you'd face similar challenges in the role you're interviewing for.

"I tend to speak up when necessary. A few months ago, I disagreed with our project manager, who was eager to present our plans to the client. However, during our final meeting, I noticed we'd missed a key element that our client valued. I halted the presentation plan and convinced the team to work a couple more days before presenting. We didn't meet our specified deadline, but we delivered quality work. The client was so happy that there was never any mention of missed deadlines, and I kept the respect of my team and manager."

Your communication skills are being evaluated during the interview. In addition to listening to how you answer their questions, your interviewer is watching your body language and facial expressions. Hiring managers want to see your whole communicative style. The hiring manager likely wants to know that you're comfortable with, and/or open to all types of communication. Successful communication with coworkers, managers and clients is one of the most essential qualities a prospective employee can possess.

When asked about your communication style- it's important that you are adaptable. If you think you're a fairly open, straightforward communicator, say so with confidence. If you're a great listener, but more reserved when it comes to verbalizing your thoughts or feelings, and it's something you're working on, be honest about it. The hiring manager will likely appreciate your honesty and ability to recognize your style of communicating and your willingness to make improvements and adapt as needed.

"I would consider myself to be more technical minded when it comes to my drafting projects. I am very much into calculations and logistics rather than the creative side of CAD. Of course, being creative-minded is very helpful in my role as a CAD drafter but I feel that it's the technical side of me that really carries me successfully from project to project."

If there were any tasks I could delegate to other capable individuals, I would not be afraid to ask for assistance."

When an interviewer asks you to describe how you'd handle a situation where you were required to finish multiple tasks by the end of the day, you can safely assume that handling multiple projects at the same time is going to be part and parcel of your (potential) new job. The interviewer wants to hear your strategy and your ideas on how to handle bringing different tasks (likely, one with different levels of complexity and priority) across the same end-of-day finish line.

"I am a very focused individual as it is, so it isn't very difficult for me to remain this way while I work. The busier I am, the better. If I feel that I am becoming unfocused, I will take a quick lap outside and then get back to work."

Discuss any tips or tricks for remaining focused and attentive to your work throughout the day. Tell the hiring manager your personal techniques and strategies for staying organized and getting the job done with minimal distractions.

Interviewers want to figure out whether you enjoy the field and seem like someone who will stick with the profession long-term. If you seem like you care, you'll work harder and overcome challenges. What made you choose a career in CAD design?

"I chose technical school on a whim, to be honest. Right out of high school I wanted to travel but didn't have the funds to take many trips, so I enrolled in a local community college in CAD classes. When I enrolled in our local tech school I actually found it to be a lot more fun than I expected. So, I guess you could say that I kind of 'fell' into the decision. I have absolutely no regrets, nine years later and love what I do."

Tell the hiring manager a bit about yourself and why you chose technical school to become a drafter. It is absolutely okay to talk about yourself on a personal level when answering this question.

"I would be happy to upgrade my associate's degree into a degree in urban planning. Of course, this would have to be in the form of evening and weekend courses, as I would need to continue to work full time."

"Collaboration is a key aspect of success in the workplace and I really do enjoy collaborating with others. I find I'm most productive and motivated when working on a team and bringing my best ideas to the table. I feel I can always learn something from other team members and I'm able to give input as well. I find it very rewarding."

Tell me about your biggest mistake during a project. How did you correct it?

"During a recent project, I somehow made the error of deleting important work from our company's primary drafting program. It was hours worth of work that was potentially lost. First, I went to my manager and described the situation. She was able to contact the correct IT administration technician and we were able to have the issue resolved. Mistakes in the workplace do happen and I feel that it is really important to not panic when they do and work with others to resolve the problem. Most things can be resolved."

Talk to the hiring manager about a mistake that you have made in drafting. Prepare for this question by writing down challenges you faced in an academic and professional setting and any mistakes you've made. Focus on what your process was to correct the errors and come up with resolutions.

"Currently, I am responsible for mentoring my own junior CAD drafter. My current company puts a large emphasis on mentorship and it was a huge compliment to me when I was asked to be a mentor to someone newer to their career. This is because I have a higher than average level of knowledge in regards to our systems and projects."

Aside from your general duties as a CAD drafter, consider the type of tasks that you have responsibility for that reflect a more senior-level sense of responsibility. Share with the hiring manager any additional responsibilities that you have been given in your current, or most recent, role.

Goal-oriented individuals are almost always more likely to gain consideration for positions than those who seem to be drifting in their careers. Employers will typically give more consideration to those who seem truly invested in their own career development and have a plan in place. "In the short-term, I would like to receive a promotion to senior drafter or CAD coordinator. I have also set a goal to take an advanced-level GIS course and apply my new knowledge to larger, more complex projects. My long-term goal is to lead a team of CAD drafters and establish best practices for the firm."

"I feel that I am a better drafter than the next person because I have unmatched attention to detail. I am very particular about my work and put a lot of emphasis on precision and accuracy."

"The most complicated project that I have worked on was when I was working as a junior CAD drafter for XYZ. I had little experience and the time to conduct research on particular engineering functions but in the end, was very excited about the new knowledge that I gained in the process."

It's important that you prepare your answers in advance so that you're able to demonstrate how you deal with challenges and describe what you learned from them. Take a few minutes to discuss the most difficult or complicated design you have had to create in your career as a CAD drafter. If you could change anything about your current job, what would it be?

"My current company has been very good to me and there is very little that I would change. If given the chance, the one thing that I would suggest to them is that they upgrade their operating systems to allow CAD drafters access to their work from remote locations. Currently, there are no programs accessible on a shared drive."

My early education helped build a strong foundation and professional discipline, allowing me to continue to develop in-demand CAD skills while working for fast-growing engineering companies."
