About Author

August 17th, 2017

Authors and writers develop written content that's used in a wide range of media, including advertisements, books, magazines, scripts for television and film, blogs, and more. Authors and writers typically work indoors in an office setting. Working hours can vary depending on the nature of the role. Writers can find freelance remote work. In contrast, staff writers may be required to work at an office. A bachelor's degree in literature, writing, or language arts may be preferred or required. Skills that are crucial to success include creativity, social intelligence, persuasion, and writing.

Jobs for authors and writers can be found through typical channels like online job boards such as Indeed, CareerBuilder, and Monster, as well as through career websites for publications. The interview will assess your prior work experience to check for a fit with the content that the company is looking to produce, as well as key qualities such as your ability to analyze and research material and to adapt your writing style to the established style. You may be expected to have a portfolio of pieces that you've written that demonstrate the quality of your writing.

To prepare for an interview for authors and writers, put together or review your portfolio. Choose pieces that are relevant to the position that you're applying for. For instance, if you're applying to a tourism publication, you may want to consider including pieces on travel or that demonstrate your ability to convey an experience of a certain locale. Think about examples of how you're able to meet deadlines and to implement constructive criticism. Be prepared to talk about your writing process and give details on the work that you've done previously.
