About Apartment Leasing Agent

August 17th, 2017

Apartment leasing agents are hired by property management companies to serve prospective tenants and to secure rental agreements. They conduct apartment showings and perform marketing and community outreach functions. Administrative duties are also a part of the job, which includes collecting rent, processing applications, preparing paperwork, and periodic reporting. Leasing agents can be assigned to one specific building (e.g. 'on-site agent') or can work for any number of buildings. It's not uncommon for apartment leasing agents to work during weekends in order to accommodate prospective tenants, though they may also be able to set their own hours depending on the organization and its needs. A high school education is typically required, and additional licenses and certifications are desirable.

Job openings for apartment leasing agents can be found through typical channels like online job boards such as Indeed and CareerBuilder. Vacancies can also be found by searching for property management companies.

The interview process will focus on your ability to provide customer service. Depending on the nature of the role, you may also be expected to meet financial quotas by securing rentals. You'll also be assessed on your ability to contribute to marketing efforts, as well as your ability to systematically organize your work. Your awareness of local real estate trends may also play an important part in the job.

To prepare for an interview for apartment leasing agents, ensure that you arrive at the interview with a polite and pleasant demeanor so that your prospective employer will be confident that prospective tenants will be treated well. To understand the role and prepare for its demands, read the job description carefully and determine whether you'll be expected to simply execute your duties on a daily basis, or if you'll also be expected to make major contributions to expanding the business in an entrepreneurial way. This will indicate to you how to frame your working disposition. Either way, be prepared to demonstrate your ability to organize your clerical and administrative work, and to talk about local rental trends such as how much similar apartments are renting for and the kinds of tenants who are moving into the neighborhood.
