Apartment house managers are property managers who make sure that residential rental properties are run smoothly. To do so, they ensure that the tenants' financial obligations are met in a timely fashion, e.g. collecting rent, ensuring that taxes and insurance is paid, etc. They also ensure that vacancies are kept to a minimum by advertising and otherwise attracting prospective tenants to rent in that property. Many property managers work in office settings but also spend a lot of time in the field—they conduct apartment showings, deal with both tenants and upper management or owners, and managing the maintenance staff. They work during normal work hours, but long workdays are not uncommon because of evening meetings with residents, civic groups, and boards.

To prepare for an interview for apartment managers, research the property and the neighborhood that it resides in so that you can gain a fair understanding of the kinds of tenants you'll most likely be dealing with. To show that you're able to interact and communicate with a wide range of people, think about what information you use to determine how to communicate with that person. To show your conflict resolution and problem-solving skills, think about times when someone made demands from you or your organization that you could not meet, but who you were able to satisfy with a compromise. Also be prepared to talk about how you manage your time and stay organized. Finally, make sure that you come up with a well-defined reason for applying to manage that specific property so that the interviewer can clearly see your degree of motivation.
