August 17th, 2017

Animal nutritionists specialize in animal nutrition. They assess and design healthy diets for animals and provide information and advice related to animal nutrition. Animal nutritionists usually work for feed companies or they may be employed directly by farmers. During the work day, animal nutritionists formulate diets to maximize growth, health or reproduction, assess the nutritional and chemical value of feeds and monitor feed formulations to ensure they comply with animal health standards. Their exact responsibilities, as well as their working hours, will differ depending on their workplace.

To work as an animal nutritionist, you must have completed a relevant science-related degree such as biochemistry, agricultural science, biomedical science or food science. Completing a program related to animal studies, animal management, animal welfare or agriculture (animal science), will open up more opportunities. In this role, you must be able to formulate and communicate ideas and conduct research in an ethical, reliable and safe manner.

Prospective employers will go to great lengths to ensure that the person they hire has extensive knowledge about animal nutrition and is genuinely interested in animal health and nutrition. They will only entrust you with this job if you can answer all of the interview questions satisfactorily.

Expect to be asked questions aimed at evaluating your knowledge of animal nutrition and your passion in this niche field. Be prepared to explain why you chose to work as an animal nutritionist, where you see in a few years, how you would handle various situations and how you think you could contribute to the growth of the company.
