About Aerospace Products Sales Engineer

August 17th, 2017

An aerospace product sales engineer sells complex aerospace products to businesses. Sales engineers must have extensive technical knowledge of the products that they represent so that they can communicate the benefits to prospective buyers. Sales engineers give presentations to prospective buyers and serve as a liaison between the customer and the engineers, communicating the customer's needs and requirements. Sales engineers often work in office settings and may travel extensively to maintain relationships with existing customers and to secure new business. A sales engineer should have strong technological skills in order to understand the product; communication and interpersonal skills enable a sales engineer to convey that information to the customer.

Job openings can be found on the career websites of companies that deal in technologically and scientifically complex industries, such as biomedical technology companies. Vacancies can also be found through typical channels like online job boards such as Indeed, CareerBuilder, and Monster.com. The interview will focus on your technical knowledge of the type of products that you'll be selling, as well as your ability to successfully make sales. You may be asked about your previous experience in sales (e.g. the highest sales volume and average sale size), as well as your sales methodology and your approach to the kind of customers you can expect.

To prepare for an interview for a sales engineer, review your technical knowledge as it relates to the products that you'll be selling. If you don't have direct experience with that field, find ways to relate your experience to it. For instance, if you don't have experience selling neuroscience research equipment, but instead have sold enterprise resource planning software, highlight the complexity and scale of the systems you sold and relate it to the complexity of the research equipment. Be prepared to speak on your sales methodology. A consultative and solution-oriented sales approach is typically an effective approach for sales engineers.
