About Aerodynamics Engineer

August 17th, 2017

Aerodynamics engineers design and test aircraft, spacecraft, and other aviation and aerospace-related machinery whose performance is affected by its aerodynamic properties (e.g. turbines, helicopter motors,e tc.). Safety, quality standards, and performance standards are some of the many factors that aerodynamics engineers consider when creating designs that adhere to government regulations. Aerodynamics engineers typically work in office settings during normal business hours and are expected to use advanced computer software to simulate and evaluate aircraft. A bachelor's degree may be sufficient depending on the employer, though a master's degree is often preferred.

Job openings for aerodynamics engineers can be found through typical channels such as online job boards like Indeed and LinkedIn. Vacancies can also be found on corporate career websites. The interview will be focused on your technical ability and expertise, as well as your problem-solving ability. Direct experience in a related specialty within aerodynamics is often preferred (e.g. handling, fluid dynamics, etc.), as is operating knowledge of certain software or programming languages. You'll be expected to demonstrate your knowledge of how to run tests, analyze test data, and writing reports. You may also be expected to give recommendations on how to reach certain performance measures.

To prepare for the interview, think of your work experience that's related to the job that you're applying for. For instance, if you don't have direct experience with vehicles, you may want to focus on your experience with wind tunnel test methodology, or any other relevant topic. Regardless, think of times when you used your creativity and understanding of the fundamentals of aerodynamics in order to arrive at a positive outcome so that you can demonstrate your flexibility and ability to overcome challenges. Be prepared to talk about your experience working in a mixed team environment: many companies hire engineers across different disciplines to form a project team. Communication skills will be crucial to your success.
