About Advertising Photographers

August 17th, 2017

Advertising photographers create photographs that are used in the marketing of products and services. They use digital and film cameras in conjunction with lighting equipment in order to capture images that will be reproduced on billboards, magazine ads, or product packaging, and other promotional material. Photographers can work in studios and outdoors environments, depending on the subject of their photographs which can range from buildings and landscapes to models and merchandise. Many photographers work flexible hours to accommodate the availability of the subject of the photography. An education is typically not required, though a portfolio that showcases previous commercial work is required.

The interview for advertising photographers will typically focus on your portfolio. The hiring organization will compare the relevance of the subject of your photos with their current needs, as well as the quality of the images. For instance, a company that is looking for photographs of a hotel exterior and hotel room interiors may be looking for a photographer who has experience photographing architectural elements and interior decorations. You'll also be assessed on your professionalism and reliability as it relates to your ability to deliver high quality images on time. You may also be required to process the images using software to achieve a certain look and feel.

To prepare for an interview for advertising photographers, research the company's needs to determine the most likely subjects for their photography if they aren't already stated directly in the job posting. Find ways to make your current portfolio relevant. If you already have relevant experience, consider the results that your images got for the company: how were your images central to getting positive impacts on the company's revenue? How do your images convey value, whether it's material or social value? Be prepared to talk about your photographic 'eye' and the way that you frame and light images in order to attain a particular look and feel that's attractive to your prospective employer.
