      Answer Example

"When I was an undergraduate student, my academic advisor was well-received and quite helpful. The resources she offered were strong. I knew my direction right from the start, which meant that I didn't need to rely too heavily on her, but, overall, I had a great example."

      Experienced Example

"It's tough to remember that far back! Just kidding, of course. I recall being a bit lost during my undergrad, to be honest. My academic advisor took the time to walk me through many different options and even set me up with some opportunities to job shadow a few professionals. Ultimately, I found his job to be the most interesting of all!"

"Unfortunately, I did not understand what an academic advisor could do for me. In the end, I self-advised and as a result, worked harder not smarter. Now when I tell students about the resources and methods that work if they are interested I am truly excited. I did use the learning center in graduate school and I eventually learned what an advisor does and found my home. I think I originally began thinking about Advising when I met a friend 20 years ago. Since then...I have found my perfect career."

      Marcie's Feedback

Your answer is honest and sincere. Is there something that you might have done differently in your academic career if you had received guidance? If so, mention this. Also, consider ending your response by reminding the interviewer that you know how much academic advisement can benefit students and that you look forward to helping as many students as you can in this way. Good job!
