"Absolutely! What are you looking for in an ideal candidate? What type of pain points is your organization currently experiencing? What is the last successful practice your team implemented and how is it going?"
"I've got tons of questions, honestly. My first would be: where is the person who you last hired for this role? What is the typical time to promotion in this role, on average? And finally, what made you decide to leave a job you were happy at to start here?"
"For sure, I have a lot of them! What are the most important qualities you're seeking in a candidate that aren't listed in the job description? Where is the current department manager headed?"
Before your interview, make sure you conduct research on the company and thoroughly review the job description for any clarification you may need on the position. Asking intelligent questions demonstrates to the interviewer your level of interest in their company, and the position. If, for some reason, you are not prepared for the interview, and you need to think of questions off the top of your head, ask questions regarding company culture, traits they are looking for in the ideal candidate, and if there is anything not listed on the job description that this position will be in charge of. Typically, pay is not discussed during phone interviews, so avoid asking any compensation related questions in the phone interview. Here are some sample questions: - When would you like to have this position filled? - How long has this role been vacant? - Is this a replacement search or a newly created role? - What is your favorite part about working here? - What is the company's primary goal for this position in the next 12 months? - Is there anything from my background and experience that I can clarify for you? - What do you see as the biggest change in this industry over the past 3 years? - Is there any reason why you would not move me to the next stage of interviews?

"I began my career, right out of university, with ABC Company. Spending 4 years there, I was able to triple my portfolio and was quickly promoted to sales manager. I left that company in 2009 after being headhunted into a more lucrative role with XYZ Company. I have been with XYZ ever since!"
"I have held progressive roles in Marketing following my education at Brown University, ranging from Coordinator to Generalist to Sr. Manager to Director. Each career move I made was in the interest of developing professionally and becoming more advanced in my field of expertise."
"I've earned quick promotions across organizations, starting with my first job out of college. Upon graduation, I started with CBA Company as a carrier sales rep. and was promoted to account manager within only a few months. I grew my book of business by over 252% from the baseline that I inherited. I left that position to start as a sales rep at a startup and was promoted faster than anyone to date in the organization and, as an account executive, I closed a deal within 48 hours of promotion, which was also record setting. I was then headhunted for a strategic sales role at my current business to help get the markets launched across country."
"My resume has three employers with all but two positions at LMN. I began at LMN in high school as a part-time sales associate, then moved to full time, and a year after graduating high school, I worked as an assistant department manager while finishing my associates in fashion merchandising. When I went away to get my B.A., I left LMN briefly. First, I worked at a restaurant on campus. Then, once I got a car, I was an assistant store manager at a boutique women's store nearby. I continued to work seasonally at LMN during school breaks, and upon graduation, I returned full time as an assistant department manager. Then, I was promoted to a department manager in accessories. Now, I am an assistant manager in the juniors department, which may sound like a demotion, but the department is four times the size in both sales volume and staff."
Briefly describe your work history, starting at the least recent position. Be brief and positive, outlining one or two main achievements in each role. Be sure to include why you left each position while maintaining a positive tone. Avoid complaining about any roles or previous employers.
