Advice
Background checks are widespread in many industries. If you are keen for the position, you much comply fully with their onboarding process. Show that you are cooperative. If there are any marks in your history, this is the exact time to disclose them.

Academic Advisor answer example
"If you are able to successfully pass a criminal record check and/or education verification: "Yes, I am happy to comply with any background checks required. My record is clean." If you are not able to successfully pass a criminal record check and/or education verification, you want to be very upfront about that: "You are welcome to conduct a background check on me. I will disclose upfront that I have a DUI on my record from 2009. This does not affect my ability to travel for work and I no longer have any restrictions on my drivers' license."
Admin answer example
"That is a great step in the process, and there will be no issues with me participating in this. I am happy to provide any supporting documents to help along the way."
Admissions Counselor answer example
"If you can successfully pass a criminal record check and education verification: "Yes, I am happy to comply with any background checks required. My record is clean." If you are not able to successfully pass a criminal record check and education verification, you want to be very upfront about that: "You are welcome to conduct a background check on me. I will disclose upfront that I have a DUI on my record from 2009. This does not affect my ability to travel for work, and I no longer have any restrictions on my drivers' license."

Retail answer example
"I do have a mark on my criminal record from a few years ago. If you can review and still accept me as a candidate, I would be happy to continue the interview process with you."
Sales answer example
"No problem. I'm also happy to provide references or documentation you may need in addition to the background and education checks."
Security Manager answer example
"Before the interview, find out more about their requirements. If you know you will need to get a background check, get a copy of yours before they run it. You need to know if there are any infractions, major or minor, so that you can share them when they ask you about it. The worst thing that can happen is if you tell them everything is sparkling clean and then something shows up. They want to be able to trust you, and they may be okay if something minor shows up, as long as you can explain it and don't try to hide it. Do as much research as you can to find out their specific requirements and make sure you are able to meet those standards before the interview. Your response to this question should be, "A background check is no problem..." even if you do have something on your record. If you did community service or got something expunged, let them know. Share what you learned from any experiences that may show up on your record."
