      How to Answer

Policy-based MMI questions like this one mean to uncover your current level of knowledge on particular medical-related topics. Take some time to reflect on what you know regarding the Human Genome Project. Discuss the project, its pros, its cons, and any known issues related to the project.

      Answer Example

"I can best explain the Human Genome Project as an initiative led by an international team of researchers looking to sequence and map all of the genes of the human species. This project ran from 1990 to 2003, giving humans the ability to read the complete genetic blueprint of a human. This international effort sequenced 3 billion DNA letters in the human genome and is considered to be one of the most ambitious scientific undertakings of all time. Thanks to the Human Genome Project, we now have coverage of about 99 percent of the human genome's gene-containing regions, with an unprecedented accuracy of 99.99 percent. Of course, scientific undertakings as large as this do not come without controversy. One of the most positive outcomes of the Human Genome Project is that healthcare professionals, policymakers, students, and the public now know so much more when it comes to genetics and complex genetics-based disease. On the flip side, the project also raised ethical issues surrounding the design and conduct of genetic research, including privacy and consent. All in all, I believe the Human Genome Project to be an incredible scientific feat, helping medical professionals to understand the human genetic blueprint better."

"The human genome project was an endeavor to fully sequence an entire human genome. This means the full sequence of base-paired nucleotides that make up the genetic sequence of a human being. This project was undertaken in the early 21st century by a large group of scientists and completed in about a year's time. It has led to a huge increase in what we know about genetics and our ability to sequence genes."
