"Yes, I certainly have! Of your services, I have used A, B, and C. I really have enjoyed all of these so far and look forward to experiencing more of what Company ABC has to offer."

At Company ABC we seek to hire those who think outside the box. When was the last time you made a suggestion for workplace improvement? What was the outcome?

"Last year I made a recommendation for our office to incorporate a recycling program. We were going through a lot of single-use coffee pods. It bothered me how wasteful it all seemed. I presented a spreadsheet to my supervisor comparing the single-use pods vs. investing in a built-in coffee machine. The savings over 2 years were significant and my boss has now presented my idea to our head office. It feels nice to be heard in the workplace so I continue to keep my eyes out for opportunities for process improvements."

The interviewer would like to know if you are an engaged employee; offering suggestions and providing deeper thought when it comes to process improvement in the workplace. "The last time I made a suggestion for workplace improvement would have been during our last staff meeting. We have a very dated CRM system so I went ahead and researched a few newer and less costly options. I presented my findings in the meeting and the leaders are currently reviewing some options."

"After researching Company ABC online, I found that you really stand out through the many ways that you give back to your community. On the Company ABC website, as well as third party review sites, people are talking about the charitable contributions and generosity coming from Company ABC. This makes your company a big stand-out to me because I am serious about working for an organization that is aware of their social impact."

"I work a lot but, when I do have free time, I spend that with my grand-kids. It helps to give my son a bit of a break as he is a full time single dad. In addition to this, I volunteer at the local drop-in center every Christmas to help feed the homeless. Giving back is very important to me."

The interviewer would like to know that you are socially responsible and a team player - even outside of the workplace. Your answer can be as simple as babysitting your grand-kids every Sunday, to a standing-volunteer gig, to charitable contributions.

"I agree that community giving is important. I have a regular commitment with our local animal shelter and I also act as a foster home for displaced animals, when the shelter is experiencing overflow. It's easy for me because I am an animal lover but it's also really rewarding to do something kind. Can you tell me more about the philanthropic efforts of Company ABC?"

What do you foresee as the biggest challenge working for Company ABC?

"This position sounds very exciting and I understand that all roles come with their own challenges. If I had to comment on potential challenges I think the biggest one will be to learn this new industry and the language that comes with communicating with your customers. I am confident; however, that I will meet your expectations as I am a quick and diligent learner."

Working in the consumer services industry can be challenging for a few reasons. You are working with a variety of customers with different needs, a fast-changing business landscape, and a lot of competition. "The biggest challenge in any new undertaking is to get my footing and start in a new routine. I believe that once my training is complete, that will be the hurdle. I am certainly up for it, though!"

"From my understanding, the primary service offered by Company ABC is XYZ. Your primary customer base is A, B, C. Without your services, most consumers would suffer because of 1, 2, 3. Would you like to provide me with more details on the core of your business?"

Questions such as these are why it is very important that you research Company ABC before your interview. Dive deep into what they do, who their competitors are, who their clients are, and the positive impact their services and products have on their customers. Keep your answer as brief as possible and ask for clarification if you need it.

"I have conducted a great deal of research before coming here today. I understand quite a lot about Company ABC but would love to learn more from you today."

"I am very much an over-achiever and find that the best way for me to be recognized for a job well done is to be given words of kindness and recognition. I am easily encouraged and the best reward for me is to know that my hard work is being noticed."

We all like to be recognized in some way for our accomplishments in the workplace. Share with the interviewer how you would like to be recognized for your hard work. Through gifts? Financial perks? Public recognition? Kind words? Title promotions?

"I am well motivated by opportunities for promotion and new responsibilities. If you see me excelling in a particular area, it is likely because I have a very strong interest in it. So, providing me with more responsibilities, related to that particular area, is great for me."

When have you shown a willingness to learn a new method or new approach to solving a problem?

"When our company came under new management last year there were many new methods and policies that came into place. I was able to learn many new approaches to our challenges in sales, and customer management. I quite enjoyed the process."

It is a great skill to have when you are able to approach a problem in a new way. Discuss with the interviewer your ability to approach a problem using new methods.

"I am always willing to learn new techniques and problem solving methods! In my most recent position I requested to attend a workshop at our local college that included dispute resolution and other customer service techniques. I learned a lot there and was able to implement my new approach almost immediately."

Tell me about a time when you had to troubleshoot to solve a problem.

"Last week, while operating the till, I was receiving a repeated error. I entered in a few different codes but that didn't solve the issue. I then did a hard reset, removing all power sources. Then, I referred to the online manual for additional suggestions. It took a little time and patience but I was able to resolve the issue without calling a technician."

Troubleshooting is like reverse engineering - it takes skill, effort and patience. You have to understand the problem in order to know how to work backwards from it to find a solution. Knowing how to solve problems with technical equipment is always a solid skill, and a great way to demonstrate your example. Show that you are insightful in your approach.

"We do not have an IT department in my current office so whenever an issue arises, I am the person that my team calls. Troubleshooting is fun for me - it's like a new challenge every time. Google and IT related forums are often my best friend!"

What career path interests you the most in this company?

"What interests me most about your company is that there are so many options when it comes to career growth. Ideally, I would like to earn my way into a Territory Sales role, then a Regional Manager position. Eventually, a Director of Sales or Marketing position would be ideal. Of course, I understand that this will take many years of dedication and hard work."

This is where it is really important to have completed some research on the interviewing company. Be sure to envision where you can see yourself fitting, and growing, with the organization prior to your interview. Do some research on what a career path could look like with this particular company.

"I am interested in a variety of paths with your company. I could absolutely see myself working in your Sales department as I further my knowledge on your product."

"What are the scheduling expectations for this position?"

Before answering scheduling questions, it's important to be clear on expectations. If you haven't had a chance to clarify their scheduling needs, now would be the perfect time to ask! Consider asking, "What are the scheduling expectations for this position?" If they expect you to work 12 hour days, it would be important for you to know that before you respond with, "Absolutely! No problem!" You want to be sure that you can meet their expectations. If it turns out their schedule expectations won't work for you, think about what you can offer and see if you can meet in the middle. It's much better to discuss these things in an interview than for you to commit to a schedule that won't work for you.

"I am willing to work overtime, but how much and how often are the first questions that come to mind. I firmly believe that downtime, or personal time, are essential to recharging your batteries and staying focused."

"I rate my communication skills as a 9/10 as I will, on occasion, have times when I am not as clear as I would like to be. My supervisor and co-workers will attest to my clear and concise communication skills. Because I am an open leader, my team will let me know if I need to clarify anything."

On a scale of 1-10, how skilled are you in communication? Why did you choose that particular rating for yourself?

"I will rate myself an 8 because I value communication. I utilize multiple methods of delivering messages and I give ample time for questions before implementation."

Considering your background is in an industry different from ours, what skills and characteristics do you have that qualify you for this position in this industry?

"Although my background is not in your precise industry, I have worked with many clients who have been in your industry. I bring excellent transferable skills that qualify me for this position. These skills include my advanced abilities in Excel, my outstanding cold-calling abilities as well as my proven background in team leadership."

There are many ways that you can be a fit for a position, even though you do not come with direct industry experience. Think about the variety of skills that you have and how those can benefit another employer, despite the industry. Tell me about a time when you were unable to meet a project deadline. How did you react?

"Last month I missed a project deadline primarily because I underestimated the need for support staff on the project. Despite working overtime, I missed the deadline by 3 days. When I realized that the deadline would not be met, I called the client and apologized. I did take full accountability for the inconvenience and met the second deadline that I promised the client."

Nobody is perfect! The interviewer knows that there will be times when deadlines are not met, and projects go sideways. What they really want to know is - how do you react? Are you someone who will have a workplace temper tantrum or are you the type to keep plugging away, despite the perceived failure? Perhaps you simply underestimated the depth of the project or maybe you faced a distraction at work. Whatever the situation was, discuss what you learned from the outcome. Show the interviewer that you do not have a defeatist mentality.

"We once fell behind in a project due to testing on a new service. I reacted by quickly rearranging schedules and identifying our earliest possible completion to inform our supervisors and customers."

How often do you discuss work with your colleagues in order to think up new systems and styles of working?

"I have a policy with my team that if they have an innovative and helpful idea they can bring it to me at any time. If their idea or system is something that I think could work, we then create a plan together to present it to our head office. This policy has generated some really strong ideas in our office over the past 3 years including a work-share program and some health and safety initiatives."

Do you use your creative mind with your colleagues in order to discuss ideas and systems in the workplace? Talk to the interviewer about how you have used creative thinking in the workplace.

"I think it is important to discuss work with colleagues in a collaborative nature to encourage all types of ideas to come forth. Often times, when people put their heads together, they will create something better than something one individual could have done alone."

How many days were you absent from work last year?

"I had zero unexcused absences last year. In total, I took 12 vacation days out of my 15 allotted days. I was sick just 2 and those were accompanied by a note from my Doctor. Once I was late due to a terrible snow storm and I always try to be 10 minutes early for my shift."

A part of being a diligent employee is to ensure that you are always on time and present when expected. It's great to even be 10 minutes early rather than just showing up right on the dot. Talk to the interviewer about your attendance.

"I cannot recall the exact number but I think it was around 3 days total. All absences were excused and with notice."

Tell me about yourself.

"I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Communications and Marketing from UBC in 2009. Since then, I have been actively making my way to a leadership role in social media marketing. I am an energetic and positive person, ready to make a difference in a growing organization."

Open ended questions are some of the hardest to answer in an interview. It's important to train yourself how to talk about yourself. It may sound a little silly, because you've been talking about yourself for years! In an interview, you should leave out the highly personal stuff. No need to talk about your new puppy or your favorite foods. Keep it professional and concise. Interviews typically last for about thirty minutes to an hour, so keep that in mind as you prepare. I have to remind myself that I did absolutely everything that I could to ensure their success but, at the end of the day, I cannot carry the full weight."

Terminating an employee is never a task that people like to do. Talk to the interviewer about how you go about employee terminations. What does that conversation usually look like?

"Unfortunately, this is a part of wearing your management hat. I recently had to separate employment with someone who was under-performing. We coached them, offered additional learning experiences and worked with them on a performance improvement plan. It was the right person in the wrong role and we had to make the decision to move forward."

Who is the smartest person you know? Explain your answer.

"To me, the smartest person I know is author Brene Brown. She has the most unique concepts and I have never seen anyone be able to dissect and analyze statistics quite like her. She's absolutely brilliant. This is a great question! Who do you feel is the smartest person you know?"

You can have fun with this question and choose a family member, friend, mentor, author, or celebrity. Just be sure that you can back your answer! A great way to keep this conversation going would be to ask the interviewer the same question in the end.

"The smartest person I know is my grandmother! She served for the armed forces and made a name for herself in a time when it wasn't popular for women to serve in the military. I admire her smarts and her courage."

If you had $50,000 to build your own business, what would you do?

"If I had $50,000 to build my own business I would open up a community center in my neighborhood that offered inexpensive childcare, cooking classes, and other life skills programs. I am passionate about volunteering and see a strong need in those particular areas."

If money was no object, what kind of business would you start? The interviewer will be able to learn something new and unique about you through this question. Avoid answers that would include building a business that competes with the hiring company.

"I would choose to invest the $50,000 into an existing business in an industry that my spouse has an interest in. I love what I do for a career but she has always wanted to be an entrepreneur."

What do you think might be the greatest challenges faced in this job with Company ABC? How will you overcome these challenges?

"I think the greatest challenges in this role will be to learn the proper operation of the software systems. Another challenge will be the physical aspect of the position as I will be required to stand and walk around most of the day. I will be sure to pay keen attention during training and ask questions along the way. In regards to the physical component - I will get used to the additional activity after just a couple of days, I'm sure."

Even though it may seem like a dream job, the interviewer wants to know that you have realistic expectations of the role and that you will not be blindsided if problems or challenges present themselves. Keep you answer simple. It is absolutely okay to ask for clarification on the role if you do not fully understand what challenges are in store for you.

"I would say the greatest challenges I'll face in this role is learning the industry ins and outs in order to be perceived as an expert when making the pitch to new clients. I'm not worried in the least of learning the material or the pitch, but there's more to being credible and approachable about a topic than the company's pitch, so I want to be sure to really immerse myself in the industry lingo, attend as many seminars and conventions as possible, and I've already begun subscribing and reading the leading industry publications so that I can really get into the nitty gritty of how it all works. Of course, I will also seek out mentorship opportunities where I can learn from folks who have been in the industry for years. I find they love to share their knowledge and it really gives me a leg up."

How do you feel about performance incentives?

"I feel that performance incentives are a great idea. They keep an employee motivated to do a great job and ensure that they are on top of their KPI's. The majority of people are very enthused about being rewarded for their successes."

"I think performance incentives are important for driving people to get results. For me, personally, they give me some skin in the game and get my team engaged in making an impact towards the results."

If you had a co-worker call in sick and you were asked to take over their project requiring overtime from you, how would you react? Where do you draw the line when it comes to being a team player?

"I will always choose to be a team player. If I had a co-worker call in sick, I would take over what I was capable of. The only time I would draw the line would be if I felt I was being taken advantage of. For example, if they were purposefully being inefficient and expecting me to pick up the slack. For the sake of the company, I am always willing to go above and beyond what is expected of me."

"I've always been the youngest in a leadership position within my department as a whole. Being the youngest, and being in a position of leadership is alienating on two accounts. I'm excluded because I'm "oh so young", and I'm excluded because I'm also their boss. It's certainly alienating and can be discouraging. That said, I have made every effort to make myself a part of the team, whether that is finding ways to relate to what they're talking about and going along with the joke or poking fun at my age, to an extent, and even sometimes giving it back to them in jest about their eras, to also being sure to walk the fine line of being appropriate, fun, but also requiring some degree of respect. I want to be comfortable and accepted, but not at the cost of compromising myself or my leadership abilities."
