"Experiencing a setback is always disappointing and can be very disheartening, especially when involving a project that I have put a lot of time and effort into. I understand that setbacks happen to everyone - despite their level of expertise or years of experience. If I experience a major setback, I take a few moments to debrief internally, get some fresh air if possible, or discuss what I could have done differently with a mentor. Then, I move on. Rather than dwell on my mistakes, I choose to learn from them."

"I am very proud of my achievements during my undergrad education. Those courses will add so much value to my graduate program. My best grades were always in my chemistry courses. I excelled in these because they are related to pharmacology, which I am particularly interested in. A weakness I'd like to improve is my time management. I overextended myself last semester with volunteer opportunities, and my study time suffered slightly. Now that I have identified the reason behind my time management challenges, I will only see improvement moving forward."

"I have formed a three-pronged plan to tackle the stressors that may arise during my pharmaceutical program. These three approaches will address my academic stress, the emotional strain of adjusting to my new surroundings as I relocate, and the financial strain associated with high tuition. For academic stress, I plan to create a study schedule that I will stick to closely. I will join study groups to help me gain a broader perspective, and I have arranged for a part-time tutor if needed. For the strain that will result from uprooting myself, I have planned to join a couple of university clubs to get to know other students and make new friends, avoiding feelings of loneliness. I also plan to FaceTime my family every week to prevent myself from feeling homesick. I have come to terms with the financial commitment of becoming a pharmacist. I have created a solid financial plan to pay back my loans, and I enlisted a financial advisor to help me create a student budget that I will adhere to closely. I feel well-prepared to cope with and address the immense workload and other expectations ahead of me as a pharmacy school student."

Attending a pharmacy program is a highly involved commitment, and the interviewers want to see evidence that you are ready to handle the expectations ahead. Not only will you be starting pharmacy school, but there is a chance you will be relocating to a new city to attend university. You may also have financial stressors on your mind as you enter this new commitment. Discuss in detail how you plan to remain emotionally grounded as you enter this challenging (yet, rewarding!) time in your life.

The University of the Pacific must exercise great discernment when choosing applicants. What is your plan if you are not accepted into pharmacy school this year?

"Should I not be accepted into your pharmacy program the first time, I plan to reapply the following year. I would take the year to upgrade any required courses and prepare an even stronger application. My life's goal is to become a pharmacist, and I certainly won't take one rejection as a final answer."

The interviewers want to know that you have thought out all options and scenarios if you are not accepted to the University of the Pacific. Your answer to this question should also show the interviewers that your interest in healthcare goes deeper than your acceptance into pharmacy school. If you are not accepted, show that you will take a different path as a pharmaceutical assistant or sales representative, for instance. "There are several factors that drive my passion for a career in the area of pharmaceuticals. If I had to pinpoint one main driver, I would say that helping others through chronic pain or debilitating disease management is the most significant. Everyone deserves access to important medications, and I plan to live that mantra by being the best at what I do, and giving my all to my patients/customers, every day."

I would be so proud to say that I graduated from this school."

The interviewers would like to understand the types of schools you are interested in. Knowing where you are applying will help them understand better if the University of the Pacific will meet your specific needs and educational desires or goals. You should be transparent when answering this question but avoid saying anything offensive, such as, 'this school is my last choice.' "I believe the most important quality for a pharmacist to possess is integrity. A pharmacist with integrity always puts their patients and customers first. They will relentlessly ensure proper care and dosing for all and that their patients receive the best drug options available. Integrity is essential, so I am actively working on increasing my integrity level in various personal and professional situations. I show integrity by keeping my appointments and commitments and fulfilling my promises."

The interviewer wants to see that you have some insight into the desired qualities and characteristics of a pharmacist. This question is an opportunity to give a unique answer, so try to dig deeper than 'good communicator' or 'strong attention to detail.' "I understand that my day-to-day responsibilities as a pharmacist include speaking with customers, helping them understand their dosages, and answering questions. I know it won't always be glamorous, and it can be physically taxing as there is a lot of standing during the day. With that said, I look forward to coaching my customers on proper drug use and dosages and creating lasting relationships with those in the community where I work."

The interviewers want to know that you have a realistic idea of what your career will look like once you've completed the pharmacy program at the University of the Pacific. It's important to understand that you may not be exactly where you want to be immediately after graduating. Show the interviewers that you have a realistic understanding of what your day-to-day life will look like once you have graduated.

"I feel that my GPA of 3.2 could have been higher. However, I worked full-time while attending classes and was stretched very thin. Overall, I learned a lot about discipline and commitment and am happy with how hard I worked to achieve a GPA above 3.0."

The interviewers know your current GPA from your transcripts and application. However, they want to hear if you are happy with your GPA or if you wish it were higher. If you are unhappy with your current GPA, explain where you could have done better. If you are pleased with your GPA, describe how hard you worked to maintain your GPA.

The University of the Pacific requires a minimum overall 3.0 GPA and a 2.7 GPA in specific math and science courses for admission into their pharmacy program. "My current overall GPA of 3.9 is a fair reflection of my above-average ability in pre-pharmacy coursework. You will see that my basic science GPA of 4.0 is even higher than my overall GPA, which suggests my abilities in this field."

Why should we accept you over another pharmacy student with the same qualifications?

"I believe I am the strongest candidate for your pharmacy program because I am incredibly dedicated to my professional and personal development. Since beginning my undergraduate program, I have committed to taking a personal development workshop twice yearly. The topics have included communication, leadership, multi-tasking, organization, and even persuasive writing. I plan to take these skills and apply them to my graduate studies. I have already demonstrated outstanding dedication to this profession, as evidenced by my work outside the classroom. I have volunteered for the past four years with nonprofit organizations that help the less fortunate with vaccinations and medical care. I regularly seek additional educational opportunities to continue gaining knowledge related to pharmacy."

The interviewers are looking for unique qualities and characteristics that make you stand out from the other students wishing to attend the University of the Pacific. Put yourself in their position. They are looking at multiple talented candidates. All have stellar grades, a drive, and the potential to be renowned University of the Pacific alumni. Prescription drug abuse is a widespread issue. How will you recognize the signs of drug abuse in your customers? How would you handle a situation like this?

"I understand that prescription drug abuse is an epidemic and that, as a pharmacist, I must be diligent when recognizing the signs of abuse in my customers/patients. I have researched this social issue a great deal. The signs include a patient being adamant about receiving a certain brand, doctor-hopping, and even forging doctor's prescriptions. I will be committed to diligence and awareness of this social issue during my career. I will handle this situation as I will be taught during the pharmacy program and based on company protocols."

The interviewers want to know that you are familiar with the potential dark side of pharmaceutical drugs. Show that you will be responsible as a pharmacist and that you are capable of recognizing the signs of drug addiction. Then, explain how you would handle a customer showing signs of drug abuse.

Since you have not entered the pharmacy program, you have likely not been taught how to handle a customer who shows signs of drug abuse. Additionally, the company you work for may have specific protocols for handling a case like this. Show the interviewers that you understand the signs of prescription drug abuse and will handle these customers according to how you will be taught and your company's protocols.

If you could meet anyone in the history of medicine, who would you choose and why?

"If I could meet anyone in the history of medicine, I would go back to the very beginning and meet Hippocrates. I find it fascinating that he was the first to believe that disease and death were not a result of the anger of the gods. I would ask him what that first conversation sounded like when he told others that disease is not caused by superstitious belief. He would have had to have faced so many roadblocks, yet, he continued to believe in his work."

This is more of a personal interest question, making it tough to give a wrong answer. Think back to any of the founding fathers (and mothers!) of medicine and decide who has a story that resonates with you the most. They may have overcome something that you can relate to or may have discovered/created/invented something that you admire. It's also a great idea to think of the most burning question you would have for that individual. Add passion to your answer so the interviewers can sense your genuine interest.

If you do not have someone you admire in the medical field, research before your interview to find a person that resonates with you. Then, tell the interviewers why you admire this person and what they stand for.

In your opinion, what is the most concerning issue facing pharmacists today?

"I feel the most concerning issue in the pharmaceutical industry is the continual rise of drug prices. The best medications should be accessible to everyone, regardless of financial or social status. There has been a rising concern with big pharma creating drugs and pricing them so high that they are unattainable to most. What do you feel are the most concerning issues facing the pharmaceutical industry today?"

Being an aspiring student means taking a keen interest in current events by closely following the challenges the pharmaceutical industry faces. The interviewers want to see that your interest is deep and that you spend time learning and understanding the challenges you will face in your future career as a pharmacist.Discuss what you feel to be a primary concerning issue, and be sure to ask the interviewers what they see as the most concerning issue in the field of pharmacology today. This question is an opportunity to start a very insightful conversation.

Since this is an opinion-based question, there is no right or wrong answer. The interviewers merely want to see that you stay current on trends and topics in the pharmaceutical industry and know what issues pharmacists face.

How do you respond to feedback and criticism? Describe a situation where your work was criticized. What was your immediate reaction to the situation?

"Last year, I received a low grade on a chemistry project. When I approached my professor about the low grade, he said, 'You can do better. I expected more from you.' I was taken aback at first, but once I had time to absorb what was said, I realized that he expected more from me because he had high expectations of what I could do. It was a compliment and a challenge rolled into one! I re-did the assignment with more enthusiasm and passion the second time around. My grade improved significantly, and I thanked my professor for holding me to a higher standard."

The interviewers want to see that you are confident and mature enough to accept feedback and criticism positively, even when it is unsolicited. Not all feedback will be delivered in a friendly, easy-to-absorb manner. Think of a time when you received feedback or criticism that was a bit hurtful or surprising. Discuss how you reacted productively.

"Yes, I am aware of malpractice cases in the pharmaceutical field, and it can be disheartening to hear these stories. Although I would be diligent with my best work, perfection is not guaranteed, and mistakes happen. If I faced a situation of negligence or wrongdoing, I would take full responsibility for my part. I would defend my expertise and decision-making skills at the same time. The best thing any medical professional can do is try their best every day, document their actions clearly, and choose to work with colleagues you trust."

Pharmacists, along with all other medical professionals, can be vulnerable to accusations of malpractice and negligence. The interviewer wants to know how you will react if you find yourself involved or aware of malpractice or negligence. They want to hear your problem-solving process and if you will start panicking or stay calm and figure out a solution for the problem at hand. Tell the interviewer how you react in problematic situations. Demonstrate your wisdom and problem-solving skills. Try to keep the answer precise and remain positive.

If you have researched cases of pharmacists charged with malpractice or negligence, explain what you have learned. If you are unaware of these charges against pharmacists, be honest in your response. Then, describe how you will approach this situation if charged with malpractice or negligence as a pharmacist. Be sure to let the interviewers know you will take every precaution to avoid this happening in the first place.

When you become a pharmacist, how will you improve the profession?

"I have chosen to become a pharmacist because of the broad impact I can make on my patients, their families, and my community. Being a pharmacist is much more than dispensing medication. It's a career where I can get to know many of my patients on a closer level since they will visit me regularly for prescription refills. I can educate my patients on proper dosing, which impacts their day, including side-effect management, appetite levels, sleep quality, and even mental clarity. As a pharmacist, I will improve the profession by bringing this whole-health knowledge and mindset to my patients. When my patients feel motivated and empowered to take their entire health into their hands, it will create a trickle-down effect in other aspects of their lives, including their family members' well-being. This ripple will help create greater respect for proper medicating, improve the public views of our profession, and highlight how patients can rely on a pharmacist to help them manage their health."

The interviewers want evidence that you plan on making a positive and lasting impact on the pharmaceutical profession. To provide a memorable response, be as specific as possible. Perhaps you desire to work with a particular population or community. Maybe your vow as a pharmacist is to teach your patients about proper dosing. When responding to this question, focus on being upbeat in your response. The last thing you want to do is put down current pharmacists by saying anything derogatory about the profession.

"I did a lot of research on the University of the Pacific before applying. I started by interviewing some alumni I know and spoke with a couple of your current students in the pharmacy program. Last year, I attended the open house here as well. Your school left a very positive impression on me, which is why I chose to apply here."

They do not want to hear that you blindly sent out a million applications, hoping that something would stick. Share with the interviewers the consideration you put into your application. Talk to the interviewer about the ways that you prepared for the PCAT. Perhaps you set a study schedule for yourself or hired a tutor. This question is a stress test! The interviewers want to know if you are happy with your performance in the interview. There is always room for improvement; however, you want to avoid picking your interview apart.

Focus on being upbeat in your response. Even if you feel you stumbled a bit during your interview, you can easily explain that away as being nervous and excited about your meeting with the interview panel. Most everyone is nervous when going into an interview, and the interviewers understand.

Talk about the last pharma-related article you read. What did you learn?

"I was reading 'World Pharma News' the other day, an online publication I read every week. The article that caught my eye discussed how Pfizer and BioNTech are due to supply the U.S. with 100 million additional doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, totaling the number of doses to 200 million. I was quite interested to hear that the government has agreed to pay $1.95 billion for these additional doses. Of course, the hope is that these additional doses will help us to protect more individuals and end this pandemic more rapidly."

The interviewers want to know that you stay involved with the industry news and topics that impact your future career and interests. Show the interviewers that you rely on reputable sources for your information and remain actively involved in the conversations that affect your future career as a pharmacist. "My ultimate goal would be to open my own pharmacy one day, as I want to provide patients with individual attention and a wider variety of hand-picked products. I also envision myself extending assistance to my community. For instance, I could give complimentary flu shots to those who do not have insurance coverage. I have an entrepreneurial spirit, so opening a pharmacy would suit me when I am ready to take that leap."

Why are you choosing a career as a pharmacist over other medical professions?

"I could have pursued many rewarding professions within the healthcare industry. However, I chose to become a pharmacist because I experienced firsthand how the care and attention of a diligent pharmacist can change a person's life. From a young age, I had severe environmental and drug-related allergies. I suffered for years from headaches and ear infections and often reacted to prescribed medications. When I finally visited a highly attentive pharmacist, they told me some of my health issues might be due to medication sensitivities. I returned to my family doctor, who referred me to an allergist. Ultimately, these medical professionals put me on the right self-care plan while alleviating many of my long-term symptoms. I already knew I wanted to work in the medical industry; however, this experience prompted me to look further into the pharmacy profession. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to learn more about medications and help my future clients transform their health through proper prescribing and dosing."

"Although I support traditional medicine, I understand that alternative medicine can benefit some. I agree that there is a science behind alternative medicine; however, alternative medicine should be more strictly regulated. People need to educate themselves better before jumping into 'all-natural' therapy. Prescribed teas and herbs can be dangerous if taken in the wrong dosages. Even though it is natural, it doesn't mean your body will like it. As with all medicine and practices, research and education are essential."

The interviewers want to see what type of pharmacist you will be based on your thoughts on alternative medicine. Some people may agree with alternative medicine, while others may not. Since you are entering the pharmaceutical industry, you may have stronger opinions on traditional vs. alternative medicine. Describe what aspects of alternative medicine you agree and disagree with.

Alternative medicine can be a controversial subject. Some healthcare professionals love it, some are highly skeptical, and some people's opinions land in the middle.Just like you would answer a sensitive question surrounding politics or religion, it's best to support both sides in some aspect when delivering your response. If you plan to voice a highly one-sided opinion, be prepared to give substantial evidence-based thoughts supporting your viewpoint.

Who in your life mentors or inspires you?

"I find inspiration in a variety of people and things. I would have to say that the person who has most greatly inspired me is my grandmother. She always had a smile on her face no matter how hard she worked, and she loved everyone. She was well respected and always gave more than she received. I try to live like her as much as I can."

The interviewers want to see that you have a keen interest in continually learning your craft. The drug and pharma industry is ever-changing! Talk about how you stay up to date on industry trends, breakthroughs, social concerns, and more.

List a few medical journals you like to read and discuss how often you dive into pharma-related news. Perhaps you subscribe to a particular magazine, blog, or podcast or follow certain social media accounts. It's also a great idea to ask the interviewers about their favorite ways to stay in touch on pharma-related current events. Asking this question in return can make for great dialogue, and you never know what you will learn!

Walk us through your approach to studying for exams.

"I am an organized student and have devised a plan that works well for me. When I prepare for an exam, I map out the content I need to learn and divide that content over the number of days I have to prepare. When I create a study calendar, I leave the final three days leading up to the exam to review the entire library of content. I am a big fan of study aids, as I believe they work much better than simply reading and re-reading the materials. Aids such as flashcards are much more helpful than highlighting my notes. I also create practice problems and, when possible, will pair up with another student to test each other in written form or verbal lightning rounds. My approach has been successful so far, as reflected in my overall GPA."

The greater your academic performance, the better the university's metrics will be. For this reason, the interviewers want to choose pharmacy students who will be diligent in their studies and perform well on exams. Perhaps you create your own study aids or prefer to prepare for exams in a group setting. Whatever your approach, take the time to walk the interviewers through your process while providing as much detail as possible.

There is no wrong answer to this question; everyone prepares for exams differently. However, if you do not have a systematic approach to studying for exams, the interviewers will feel you are a disorganized student and may pass you over for another candidate.

"When I encounter academic difficulty, I recognize the issue early and approach my professor for additional information or study resources. With these resources, I either increase the time spent reviewing the class material or engage another person to increase my understanding of the topic. For instance, during my biophysical chemistry class this year, I fell behind as we approached the subject of molecular interactions. To ensure my success, I hired a Department of Chemistry tutor. This approach was beneficial, and I gained a much clearer understanding of the subject, which helped my grade a great deal. I will not hesitate to seek outside assistance if I encounter difficulties while attending this pharmacy program."

Every pharmacy student will experience academic challenges - you are not alone when encountering difficulties! The interviewers would like to know that you can handle roadblocks with as much emotional intelligence and poise as possible. Perhaps you reach out to other students when you encounter difficulties in your academic studies. Maybe you have conversations with your professors, or perhaps you engage a tutor to help you better understand the material. "I believe an honorable person will do what is right even when nobody is looking. The pharmaceutical industry deserves only honorable graduates. For that reason, I would tell a superior if I found a classmate cheating."

This honesty-based question tests your character and reveals how you deal with awkward or uncomfortable situations. If you have found yourself in a situation like this, you can draw on that story for your reply. Be careful not to throw anyone under the bus; you can rarely recover from unsavory behavior like that in an interview.
