Who in your life mentors or inspires you?

"I find inspiration in a variety of people and things. I would have to say that the person who has most greatly inspired me has been my grandmother. She always had a smile on her face no matter how hard she worked, and she loved everyone. She was well respected and always gave more than she received. I try to live like her as much as I can."

As a medical professional, you will regularly face illness and death. How will you professionally cope with this reality?

"I recently read a paper by Dr. Lea Baider and Dr. Simon Wein on the realities of physicians facing death regularly. The paper suggested that physicians who are successful in dealing with death at appropriate times do so by compartmentalizing their day's events. The paper went on to say that if a physician is to split the mechanics of the problem from the emotional side, the physician can continue to function without the emotions getting in the way. This is an excellent recommendation, but it is also important to choose an appropriate time to address those emotions. For me, this would perhaps mean having a mentor or even counselor whom I could visit regularly. Also, not internalizing a death or placing blame on myself for the event."

"I am sure to read PLOS Magazine, and The Lancet, regularly. I also subscribe to Kaiser Health News and The Wall Street Journal Health Blog in addition to these medical journals. It's important to diversify where my news comes from, and I would love some fresh suggestions. What are your favorite places for news on current trends?"

The admissions interviewer at the University of Minnesota Medical School wants to see that you have a keen interest in continually learning your craft. The medical industry is ever-changing. Talk about how you stay up to date on industry trends, breakthroughs, social concerns, and more. List a couple of medical journals that you like to read and discuss how often you dive into medical-related news. Perhaps you subscribe to a particular magazine, blog, or follow certain social media accounts. It's also a great idea to ask the interviewers about their favorite ways to stay in touch on medical-related current events. Asking this question in return can make for great dialogue, and you never know what you will learn!

A woman comes into the ER after a car accident. She needs a blood transfusion but she states that her religion is against blood transfusions. What decision do you make?

"From what I understand, if the patient is of sound mind and they understand the risk they are taking by refusing medical assistance, I do not have the right to override her religious choice. Many factors could change this, such as an unconscious patient, someone under the influence of a narcotic, or perhaps if the person and I had a significant language barrier. In these situations, I should refer to my facilities' leaders and ethics community. This is a decision I would not feel comfortable making entirely on my own."

The admissions interviewer at UMMS (University of Minnesota Medical School) would like to know if you are ready to face tough decisions while maintaining the integrity and code of ethics expected of you as a physician. You may not be able to answer this question completely correctly as there are many policies and legal requirements that you may not even know about yet. Answer to the best of your ability by displaying that you would make the soundest choice possible while maintaining the patient's integrity.

"I think as a physician, it is important that I place the interest of my patients first. I have to respect their decision even if it may not be what I personally think is the best for the patient. However, I do believe it is my responsibility as her caretaker to be clear and inform her of the risks and possible outcomes depending on the choice she ultimately makes. Coming from a very traditional household myself, I understand that there are cultural aspects that are to be respected, for example, in the Hmong community, when there is a big decision to be made, such as a patient is to undergo surgery, it is usual that the elders of the clan make the final call instead of the immediate family. Therefore, I think as her physician, it is crucial to understand her position and beliefs."

As a future physician, how do you plan to use your role to benefit members of your community? Do you think volunteering is important?

"Bettering my community is going to be a big part of what I do as a physician. I already spend a great deal of my time volunteering at the local children's hospital, and I plan to continue my volunteer work after medical school. One specific way I will help my community members is by holding free workshops every month. The workshops will tackle tough issues that the community is facing as a whole such as narcotics abuse and increased teen suicide rates."

The admissions interviewer at the University of Minnesota Medical School wants to know that you see the importance of community involvement. As a physician, your knowledge and help will be greatly needed and appreciated by your community. Show that you are willing to be generous with your time and knowledge. Some ways that a physician can benefit their community: - Teach your community about the health resources available to them - Offer free or reduced-fee services to low-income families - Hold free workshops on topics such as sexual health or addiction - Volunteer regularly and be an advocate for volunteering

"As mentioned, as a future physician, I hope to open more opportunities for patients of all kinds, especially the Hmong community and other underrepresented and underprivileged communities in MN. I hope to assist in the language and cultural barriers. During my early years in college, I worked as a dietary aide at North Memorial in Robbinsdale, and there was a time I was delivering a tray to a patient; when I walked in, there was this Hmong grandmother. I greeted her, and she was telling me that all her grandchildren who spoke English went home, and she had been struggling the whole day to ask the nurses if they could please give her some water, juice, or food. She said she had been so hungry, and no matter what she said, no one could understand her. After briefly talking with her, I went to the nurse station and translated that the grandmother had wanted some juice and if they could please give her some if her diet allowed it. It is disheartening to see patients struggle over something that may seem so easy for others, simply due to a language barrier. Therefore, if given a chance I know, I can be of help. As for volunteering, I definitely think it is important and is really great opportunity to learn about many things. Each of my volunteering opportunities has taught me life lessons and have served as some of my most precious memories, such as the summer I spent volunteering at Tubman. Perhaps one of the most important lessons I learned there was to never take anything for granted, whether it was materialistic items, body boundaries, or even my mental health. However, I do understand that not everyone has the privilege to volunteer, and therefore I am grateful to have been able to and at so many wonderful and dedicated organizations."

Should medical students who receive federal funds spend time practicing medicine in a less desired area, to give something in return?

"I believe that, because there is such a huge shortage of physicians in rural areas, that students receiving federal assistance should do their part by practicing in these areas for a certain amount of time. I do understand that this may seem unfair; however, there could be exceptions for certain rarer specialties or medical students who have exceptional grades, for example."

When a medical student receives federal assistance through loans or grants, some may see it as an unfair advantage for them to have the first pick of where they practice after completing medical school. On the other hand, some people don't care...so long as the best talent is being put to good use. You can share your thoughts on this with the UMMS admissions interviewer but remain positive and show your ability to see both sides.

"Honestly, I want to believe that all physicians become caretakers with the intent to helping others. Therefore, regardless of receiving federal funds or not, I think as physicians, we should make use of our skills in areas that need the help, whether they've desired areas or not. Not only am I from a minority group, but I have lived the majority of my life in Hennepin county, an area that is medically underserved. Enforcing only students who receive federal fundings and not all medical students to give back to underprivileged communities creates a hierarchy that encourages health inequity and racial disparity."

How do you express your opinions on controversial topics such as abortion, euthanasia, physician assisted suicide, and cloning?

"When it comes to controversial topics such as abortion, euthanasia, physician-assisted suicide, and cloning, I will certainly give my opinions more freely in a social setting with friends versus a workplace setting or around patients. If at work, I would try to keep my personal opinion to myself or at the very least remain diplomatic by expressing how each side has their right to an opinion."

Questions like this can be tricky so be sure to note the wording of the question before you answer. The UMMS admissions interviewer wants to see how you navigate controversial topics. They are not asking for your opinion on these topics. Discuss how you remain tactful when controversial topics arise.

"The controversial conversations that must be had as a society have always been in the shadows lurking, but recently these topics have become almost unavoidable. I think when approached with such conversations it's most important to remain calm and to be attentive. I know I may not agree with the other individual, but I can be respectful of their opinions. However, I do think it's necessary to stand up against what is hurtful and wrong."

What is your opinion on socialized health care versus privatized health care?

"I believe that the basic concepts of socialized health care and privatized health care are good by nature and speak to a range of patients. Some of my peers have expressed their love for socialized health care because, although they pay a higher tax rate, they are not caught in an expensive whirlwind when they face illness. On the other hand, privatized health care can offer significantly shorter wait times, which is very important for those with a potentially critical or debilitating illness. I believe it is important to have options for both so that people can choose."

This question is meant to start up a meaningful conversation between yourself and the admissions interviewer. They want to see a bit of your personal opinion, critical thinking skills, and the ability to be diplomatic when it comes to hot topics. Avoid any offensive answers.

What are your thoughts on animal research and animal testing in the medical field?

"Although I am a supporter of animal rights, I do understand that animal testing and research is still required for pharmaceutical testing and many other research platforms. For instance, in the U.S., it is the law for a pharma company to test on animals before a drug is distributed for human consumption. Will this change down the road? Yes, I believe that it will. We have seen technology take us so far in terms of simulations and more, and I feel encouraged that we will not lean on animal testing in research forever."

The admissions interviewer at UMMS (University of Minnesota Medical School) would like to know your stance on the controversial subject of animal testing and the use of animals for educational purposes. In many regions, animals are still a common learning modality for medical students. Breakthroughs and cures are found regularly, often through animal testing and research procedures. However, with technology changing rapidly, incredible leaps are being made to replace the use of animals in medical research. Plan an answer that is honest and true to your feelings while showing your understanding of why the use of animals takes place in medical research. Learning and research tools are ever-changing, so mention the progress you have seen through simulations and more.

"I understand the usage and purpose of animal testing in the medical field and its student benefits. However, given the advancing technology, I do think we should strive away from animal testing when possible. In my culture, it is taught that we should be kind to animals and all things for everything has a spirit and should only slaughter animals when necessary. Therefore, if there are other means and animal testing can be avoided it should."

How do you respond to feedback and criticism? Describe a situation where your work was criticized. What was your immediate reaction to the situation?

"Last year, I received a low grade on a chemistry project. When I approached my professor about the low grade, he said, 'You can do better. I expected more from you.' I was taken aback at first, but once I had time to absorb what was said, I realized that he expected more from me because he had high expectations of what I could do. It was a compliment and a challenge; all rolled into one! I re-did the assignment with more gusto and passion the second time around. My grade improved significantly, and I did thank that professor for holding me to a higher standard."

The UMMS admissions interviewer wants to see that you are confident and mature enough to accept feedback and criticism positively, even when it is unsolicited. Not all feedback will be delivered in a friendly, easy-to-absorb manner. Think of a time when you received feedback or criticism that was a bit hurtful or surprising. Discuss how you reacted productively. Tell a story that shows the interviewers how you could take the criticism and learn from it. Talk about how you successfully implemented changes in response to the feedback.

It is important that UMMS exercises great discernment when choosing applicants. What is your plan if you are not accepted into the University of Minnesota Medical School this cycle?

"Should I not be accepted into medical school the first time, I plan to reapply the following year. I would take that year to upgrade any required courses and prepare an even stronger application. My life's goal is to become a physician, and I certainly won't take one rejection as a final answer."

The admissions interviewer at UMMS (University of Minnesota Medical School) wants to know that you have thought out all options and scenarios if you are not accepted to the University of Minnesota. The way you answer this question will also show the interviewers that your interest in the medical field goes deeper than your acceptance into medical school. Talk about your plan to reapply if rejected. Whatever the path you would choose, you must show the interviewers that you have confidence and drive. "I will absolutely re-apply again. I will carefully go back through my application and look for improvements. Becoming a physician is a path I do not plan on giving up. I know strongly that I would love to be a physician for the rest of my life, and I will always be willing to work for it. However, if medicine was not an option at all, I would be an entrepreneur and would create an organization that would cater towards creating more educational opportunities for girls worldwide."

"For me to reach to this point of getting an interview at the U, it has to mean that I have an exceptional application, but there is always a room for improvement. I would ask for feedback on what I can improve, and I would definitely apply early next application cycle to increase my chances of getting accepted."

Are there any situations when a physician is justified in lying to a patient?

"I understand that the only reason a physician should withhold information from a patient is under the premise of therapeutic privilege. This concept describes situations where a patient could be a threat to themselves if the physician fully disclosed the details of their medical situation. This is generally referring to the patient being a psychological threat to themselves. Although there is support for this idea, I do not feel that it should be exercised unless the case is extreme. Physicians have a fiduciary duty to their patients which must be taken seriously."

The UMMS admissions interviewer is questioning your knowledge, character, and ethics at the same time. Prepare a well-versed answer for this question as it may come up many times during medical school and into your career. Research the concept of 'therapeutic privilege' and then create your response. Your answer should be brief, clear, and not convoluted.

"I feel that I was well prepared for the questions that you asked me today and am happy with my performance in this interview. Thank you for taking the time to meet with me today. Can I ask if there is anything I can clarify for you, or elaborate on, from today's conversation?"

There is always room for improvement; however, you want to avoid picking your interview apart. If you feel you could have performed better: 'I feel that I was well prepared for most of the questions you have asked me today; however, I would like to clarify my answer on one particular point....' When you suffer a setback, how does that emotionally affect you and your work?

"Experiencing a setback is always disappointing and can be very disheartening, especially when involving a project that I have put a lot of time and effort into. I understand that setbacks happen to everyone - despite their level of expertise or years of experience. If I experience a major setback, I will take a few moments to debrief internally, get some fresh air if possible, or discuss what I could have done differently with a mentor. Then, I move on. Rather than dwell on my mistakes, I choose to learn from them."

Everyone handles the stress and disappointment of setbacks differently. When you work in the medical field, those setbacks can be amplified. While attending university, even more so because your grades can greatly determine your future career's success. Discuss with the UMMS admissions interviewer how you typically cope with setbacks.

How would you like to see the delivery of healthcare evolve?

"I would like to see health-based organizations and facilities put more efforts into putting their patients at the center of everything that they do. This could mean cutting down wait times, improving hospitals' safety, and even engaging with the community more often, so there is a greater level of trust and comfort-ability. I do believe that we are evolving at a fast rate, and I am happy to see how far this patient-centered attitude has come since I started my educational path within medicine."

Perhaps you feel that healthcare can best evolve through more patient-focused care. What are your thoughts on alternative medicine? Which aspects do you agree and disagree with?

"Although I am a supporter of traditional medicine, I do understand that alternative medicine can offer great benefits for some. I agree that there is a science behind alternative medicine; however, alternative medicine should be more strictly regulated. People need to educate themselves better before jumping into 'all-natural' therapy. Prescribed teas and herbs can be dangerous if taken in the wrong dosages. Even though it is natural, it doesn't mean that your body will like it. Just like with all types of medicine and practices, research and education are very important."

Alternative medicine can be a controversial subject. Some healthcare professionals love it, some are highly skeptical, and some people's opinions land somewhere in the middle.Just like you would answer a sensitive question surrounding politics or religion, it's best to support both sides in some aspect when delivering your response. If you plan to voice a highly one-sided opinion, be prepared to give substantial evidence-based thoughts supporting your viewpoint.

When you become a physician, how will you improve the profession?

"I have chosen to become a physician because of the broad impact I can make on my patients and their families, as well as my community as a whole. Being a General Practitioner is a career where I can impact others by getting to know my patients more closely than many other specialists and providers can. When I am a GP, I will improve the profession by bringing a whole-health knowledge and mindset to my patients. When my patients feel motivated and empowered to take their entire health into their hands, it will create a trickle-down effect on other aspects of their lives, including their family members' wellbeing. This ripple will help create greater respect for general health care, improving how the public views our profession, and how often a patient visits their GP for regular checkups."

The UMMS admissions interviewer wants to see evidence that you plan on making a positive and lasting impact on the medical profession. To provide a memorable response, be as specific as possible. Perhaps you desire to work with a particular population or community. "As stated in my personal statement, my parents are 1st generation, Hmong immigrants. Being raised in a traditional Hmong household and pursuing a career in medicine, there were many challenges I have encountered as well as have observed, some of which include language and cultural barriers. As a physician, I hope to open more opportunities to the Hmong community in MN as well as other underrepresented and underprivileged communities. I understand what is it like to be seen as abnormal and different. I want to be able to create a platform that will give light to other perspectives and for all of us to learn to be more accepting of one another."

When you encounter academic difficulty, how do you react?

"When I have encountered academic difficulty in the past, I have recognized the issue early and approached my professor for additional information or study resources. With these resources, I will either increase the time spent reviewing the class material or engage another person to increase my understanding of the topic. For instance, during my biophysical chemistry class this year, I found myself falling behind as we approached the subject of molecular interactions. To ensure my success, I hired a Department of Chemistry tutor. This approach was beneficial, and I gained a much clearer understanding of the subject, which helped my grade a great deal. Should I come across any difficulties while attending medical school, I will not hesitate to seek outside assistance."

Every medical student will encounter academic challenges, so it's important to know that you are not alone when you encounter difficulties. The UMMS admissions interviewer wants to know that you will handle these difficulties with as much emotional intelligence and poise as possible. Perhaps you reach out to other students when you encounter difficulties in your academic studies. Maybe you have additional conversations with your professors, or perhaps you engage a tutor to help you better understand the material. "I try to remain truthful to myself when facing academic difficulties. What areas do I understand, and what do I not? I then take time to tackle the challenges myself; am I not understanding the information because I do not understand the concept, or am I not paying enough attention to the necessary details. If needed, who would be the best to reach out to, my peers or perhaps my professor? Finally, to remain persistent."

"Throughout my undergraduate, I learned to always confront difficulties with breathing techniques. I start by taking a deep breath to calm myself and organize my thoughts. Then I begin to retrace my steps and see what is the difficulty and come up with a solution to overcome. If it something I can't solve by myself I tend to seek the help of a tutor or my advisor, it's usually great to hear someone else perspective."

Walk us through your approach to studying for exams.

"I am a well-organized student and have come up with a plan that works very well for me. When I prepare for a specific exam, I will map out the content I need to learn and divide that content over the number of days I have available to prepare. When I create a study calendar, I leave the final three days leading up to the exam to review the entire library of content. I am a big fan of study aids, as I believe they work much better than simply reading and re-reading the materials. Aids such as flashcards as also much more helpful to me than highlighting my notes. I also create practice problems, and when possible, will pair up with a fellow student to test each other in written form or verbal lightning rounds. My approach has been successful so far, as reflected in my overall GPA."

The greater your academic performance, the better the university's metrics will be. Perhaps you create your own study aids. Maybe you prefer to prepare for exams in a group setting. "I usually begin by reviewing all the information and unit lessons that will be on the exam. After briefly reviewing these topics, I go through the main topics and highlight specifics aspects. Afterwards, I go through practice questions until I am confident with the type of question that may be asked on the exam. On the days leading to the exam, I try to review notes before sleeping and sometimes teach them to others around me. A few days before the exam, I also like to get together with a group of peers to study together."

Talk to us about your thoughts on handling blood and other bodily fluids. You will be subject to difficult scenarios in your role as a physician. How do you feel about this?

"I have never been a queasy individual, and I fully understand the types of cases that I will see in my career as a physician. Currently, I work part-time at our local drop-in shelter and have seen a wide range of situations involving blood and such. I don't think about the gore, but more about the fact that it's a human being who needs my help. I believe this mentality will get me through any gruesome or undesirable situation."

"I think it is always beneficial to be aware of what one's career may require, and this especially true for myself wanting to become a physician. I don't typically become queasy or uneasy at blood or bodily fluids because I know I'm here to do my job and to help. I've also worked and volunteered at the hospitals and am not shaken by unfavorable conditions some patients may be in. Furthermore, on a more personal note, my younger siblings are much younger than me. Therefore, growing up, my older sister and I often helped my parents take care of them, including changing diapers, feeding, potty training, and more."

The University of Minnesota Medical School seeks students with a true passion for medicine. What appeals to you most about a profession in the medical field?

"There are several factors that drive my passion for a career in medicine. If I had to pinpoint one main driver, I would say that saving the lives of others every day is the most significant for me. Everyone deserves great health care, and I plan to live that mantra by being the best at what I do, and giving my all to my patients, every day."

Your core passion is what will keep you going on the toughest of days at the University of Minnesota. For the interviewers to understand how to motivate you, they need to know what fires you up! "There are many aspects of the medical field that motivate me. However, what has made every challenge worth overcoming is knowing I can open more opportunities for others, especially the disadvantaged. It was not until I entered undergrad and became more familiar with the medical field through my studies, volunteer, and work that I truly recognized the enormous health disparity as a person of color, especially from an underrepresented and underprivileged community. As a biology major, of the forty classmates, graduating with me, only a handful was Hmong, and I was one of two that focused on pre-med. During my two years of volunteering at the Children's hospital, volunteering throughout various departments and specialties, I never once met a Hmong physician. When I worked at Walgreen's as a pharmacy technician, I've met perhaps two Hmong pharmacists. Minnesota holds the most compacted Hmong population in the US, but we are still clearly not represented within the healthcare system. Our physicians often do not reflect on ourselves. Therefore, it is difficult to believe we matter, and our perspectives are being understood. As a physician, I want to inform and ensure that all patients know they are respected and included. Additionally, I hope to also inspire others with similar experiences to mine to pursue medicine. It is important that the younger generation knows that their voices and perspectives matter and that it takes the intelligence and influence of many to create an inclusive space."

"This is one of the reasons why UMN is my first choice. UMN aligns with my values to respect people and always strive for excellence. It's important to respect others and uphold their values while treating them; that is something I have realized because of my past experiences. I come from a vibrant and diverse community, which enhances my ability to connect deeper to immigrants and diverse groups."

What do you believe is the most concerning issue the medical field is facing today?

"I feel that the most concerning issue in the medical industry is the continual rise of drug prices. The best medications should be accessible to anyone, regardless of their financial or social status. There has been a rising concern with big pharma creating drugs and then pricing them so high that they are unattainable to most. What do you feel are the most concerning issues facing the medical industry today?"

Being an aspiring medical student means you should take a keen interest in current events by closely following the challenges the medical industry faces. "There are many issues that are important to further discuss within the medical field, however, one of my greatest passions is looking into the social aspect of medicine. Recently, with COVID-19, it was brought to my attention that lower-income, black and brown, as well as native communities, were among the most heavily impacted. I've always thought that science and medicine are amazing subjects and can make real differences, but when it is not fairly distributed to all, we must ask ourselves who are we truly catering to. It is important that all communities are being treated and cared for, not only those who can afford it or seem fit to receiving service. The impact on these communities is not a new phenomenon but rather a long history of neglect. As a medical student and provider, I hope to encourage others to speak more about these pressing issues and learn more about the difference I can make to create a more equal healthcare system for all."

"Health disinformation is a real threat to our society. As social media seems to be the main source of news for most people, people tend to receive distrusting information. Therefore, to educate patients and keep up with new research that's developing in the scientific world, it is necessary to prevent the spread of false information."

Have you made a solid financial plan to cover UMMS tuition costs?

"I have been making arrangements for many years to afford attendance at University of Minnesota. My finances are in good order."

"At this point in my studies, I am most interested in Pediatrics as I have always had a passion for helping children. I bring a compassion that is required for that area of medicine. Also, the majority of my volunteer experience has been around children's issues. The area of medicine that I find to be my least favorite so far is Pathology. I have not excelled in the area of bio-science; however, I have hired a tutor to ensure my grades remain above average regardless of my natural interest."

Sometimes as adults, we often overcomplicate situations, but children always seem to know the correct answer. My least favorite is perhaps genetics; I'm usually a pretty imaginative individual. However, it is difficult for me to envision our DNA/RNA and their various functions. Though I am greatly fascinated by the abilities of genetics."

"My favorite area in medicine is pediatrics. I have huge compassion for kids as it's hard for them to express their pain. I'm also blessed with 25 nieces and nephews so I am very equipped to form communication with kids and understand their needs. It's hard to choose my least favorite area of medicine because I'm constantly trying to understand things and learn how to process new information. I would say research perhaps because I like to see the result of the work I'm doing immediately, and in research, trials take time to process and get results."

If you could meet anyone in the history of medicine, who would you choose and why?

"If I could meet anyone in the history of medicine, I would go back to the very beginning and meet Hippocrates. I find it fascinating that he was the first person ever to believe that disease and death were not a result of the anger of gods. I would ask him what that first conversation sounded like when he first said to others that disease is not caused by superstitious belief. He would have had to have faced so many roadblocks, yet, he continued to believe in his work."

"Dr Phua Xiong and Dr Yeng Yang became the first two Hmong women doctor in MN in 1996. I've had the chance to briefly meet Dr Phua Xiong but not Dr Yeng Yang; therefore, if I did get the opportunity, I would like to ask her about her journey and the challenges she encountered as she became one of the first Hmong woman physicians. I would also like to ask about the healthcare system twenty years ago in comparison to today. What has changed for her and what she thinks could be better improved."

The overall art piece can change drastically depending on how the artist layers the paint. My favorite pieces are abstract arts, particularly by Van Gough. I am fascinated by the details and his ability to use unusual brush marks and create a universal appreciation for his art. As a medical student and future provider, I aspire to be the same. I know I can offer new perspectives and be of benefit to the medical field."

What are you reading right now, and what have you learned?

"Currently I am reading 'Ego is the Enemy' by Ryan Holiday. It is a book about ambition, resilience, and success. I feel that everyone should read it - it comes highly recommended."

Do you feed your mind regularly? What kind of literature do you prefer and why? Talk to the UMMS admissions interviewer about a book that you are currently reading. If you are not currently reading a book - talk about one that has impacted you the most.

"As mentioned, I recently read "When the Spirt Catches You and You Fall Down" by Anne Fadiman. Again, it was a story about a Hmong family that had recently migrated to the United States and soon discovered their youngest daughter Lia has severe epilepsy. The book describes the family's encounter with the western healthcare system and their interactions with Lia's physicians. It was a book that reminded me, the importance of speaking out and making changes for a more just system for all patients. Also, how essential it is that our stories are told by us, and not through the perception of another."

What other medical schools have you applied to and where does University of Minnesota Medical School (UMMS) rank?

"I have applied to four other medical schools. Those schools are A, B, C, and D. My interest in University of Minnesota is strong because you are highly regarded in the medical industry. The reputation of University of Minnesota is unmatched. I would be so proud to say that I graduated from this school."

What achievement makes you feel proudest on your path to medical school?

Perhaps you have maintained an exceptional GPA, or maybe you excelled in school while also working a part-time job. Maybe you finished top of your class and received a special award for your achievements. Think of any accolades that you may have received along the way.

"The proudest moment on my path to medicine is being able to sit here and have the opportunity to tell you of my aspirations and purpose for medicine and be considered for a spot as a medical student at UMMS. As a Hmong American woman, the odds have not been in my favor. It was reported in 2014 that roughly 40 percent of the Hmong community has only achieved a high school diploma or less. Therefore, the opportunity to be in such an honorable position is an achievement I am extremely proud of and privileged to have. I hope in the future I'll have many more proud moments, not only for myself but also for my community."

Which would you choose: To travel 1,000 years into the past or 1,000 years into the future? Choose your preference and discuss.

"I would rather travel 1,000 years into the past, assuming that I could keep the knowledge and expertise that I currently have. Being who I am today, I could travel 1,000 years into the past to help fight disease and make significant advancements in the history of medicine. I could help eliminate a lot of risk, death, and disease, better ensuring that the world is around for another 1,000 years into the future."

Pharmaceutical companies largely influence the medical profession through lobbying. What do you believe is the impact?

"I have learned that lobbying impacts many industries and sectors, including medicine, education, law, and politics. Lobbying can hurt physicians and patients in the medical industry in a few ways. We see reports that the big pharma lobbying group, PhRMA, has spent as much as $300 million to defend higher prescription drug costs. As we know, unaffordable medication is a significant issue for many ill people in our country. One example of this impact is the outrage over Mylan's EpiPen prices in 2016. When Mylan purchased the rights to EpiPen in 2007, they gradually raised the list price from about $50 per auto-injector to over $600 for a two-pack. The move boosted EpiPen's profits to $1.1 billion a year. Much of this was due to pharma lobbying efforts directed at drug pricing and limiting generic competitors. After Trump's speech in 2018 regarding the pending fall of pharmaceutical influence on drug prices, we have seen an uptick of big pharma pouring money into lobbying campaigns regarding laws surrounding prescription drug prices. Today, despite this surge in lobbying, we continue to see improvements in drug prices, and I look forward to tracking this topic of money, drugs, and government as my medical career further unfolds."

Pharmaceutical lobbying is when pharmaceutical drug companies work to have the medical industry, medical professionals, or politicians act in favor of the pharmaceutical industry and its products. According to CNN Health, one well-known pharma lobbying group spent around $27.5 million on lobbying activities in one year alone.

'Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.' As an aspiring medical professional, what does this Hippocrates quote mean to you?

"Nutrition is a fundamental element in health, and I believe this quote addresses that fact. Hippocrates, the 'Father of Medicine,' strongly believed that disease was natural and not due to superstition or punishment from the gods. This belief led him to understand that many cures were naturally available to us on this earth. Today, many of Hippocrates' theories are now far removed from modern medicine. Yet, the saying, 'Let food be thy medicine and medicine be they food,' I believe refers to what we still find today: we can often heal ourselves naturally. In many circumstances, we can use the planet's foods, herbs, and natural resources to heal our bodies. Hippocrates supported a 'lifestyle medicine' approach and was also known for saying, 'Walking is man's best medicine.' This saying holds merit; however, today, we must be diligent in allowing traditional medicine and alternative approaches to work together to best heal our bodies from illness and disease."

Since this question concerns your opinion of a well-known quote, there will not necessarily be a right or wrong answer. What is most important when approaching this question is that you show insight and understanding of who Hippocrates was, as he is a significant figure in the history of medicine. Show that you have your unique perspective and an ability to take an age-old quote and give it meaning in today's context.

"My family is incredibly proud of me for attending medical school. My father is especially keen as he also graduated from UMMS. My parents live in Minnesota, so I will have a powerful and encouraging support system close to me during my time here."

"My family has been my number one support system. I know I would have never been able to be in this position without their encouragement. Every step of the way, they have walked with me side by side, I am eternally grateful and blessed. My older sister also is applying to the law program at U of M."

Let's say you could have any superpower. What would it be, and what is the first thing you would do with the superpower?

"I would love to read minds in any language. As a physician, I could help nearly anyone if I could read their mind and communicate with them, no matter the language barrier. Last summer, I spent three months traveling the world, where I met many amazing people, but I noticed that the language barrier was a huge challenge. If I had this particular superpower, I could meet anyone where they were and begin helping them without the roadblock of language or miscommunication. I would begin by visiting villages where medical care was unavailable and providing care to them in a way nobody in western medicine has been able to do before."
