My interest only grew as I saw physicians being able to help others live their best lives while reaching their own highest pursuits. I care about humanity and ensuring people are as healthy as possible. While pursuing my undergrad, this desire to help others only grew. Now, recently completing an internship under a general practitioner, I have grown my skills in empathy and gained a fuller understanding of the patient-centered approach. "Behavior modification is incredibly challenging, and I believe that change is a process, not an event. In many medical studies, we see that change can take six months or more, as humans tend to contemplate change for much longer than is usually necessary. Once someone is aware of a problem in their health, it often takes a long time to commit to action and change. For that reason, I would choose to put most of my efforts into treating existing diseases and improving the lives of those suffering from illness while, at the same time, working in the background to create change over time. I could do this by educating the patients I treat and encouraging them to take small steps towards change. In the case of a smoker, for instance, they may be contemplating, 'If I quit smoking, I will reduce the risk of heart disease, but I will also gain weight.' Rather than fighting their thought process, I would encourage them to cut back over time, reducing their commitment to cigarettes just one cigarette at a time."

If malicious programmers can infiltrate medical devices and hurt patients, steal research, or leak clinical trial data, this is a serious issue to be addressed immediately. To start, the medical industry needs to quickly adopt cyber protection acts similar to those that financial institutions adopt. These developments in health tech are amazing and often life-saving; however, organizations are now incurring added expenses to implement precautions against hacking. According to an IBM report, the average cost of healthcare data breaches rose to $7.1M in 2020. The FDA had some strong suggestions, such as encouraging manufacturers to limit equipment access to trusted users. Other IT experts suggest that medical organizations structure their proprietary networks with much more care."

If you were given the opportunity to change one thing about the healthcare system, what would you choose to do?

"I believe the biggest opportunity for change with the US-based healthcare system is the unequal access to healthcare benefits. People who are not provided coverage through an employer, students, and new immigrants - many people cannot afford the hundreds of dollars per month that it can cost to purchase individual health insurance. This issue leaves many people in a healthcare crisis feeling lost and desperate. If I could make changes to repair this issue, I would begin by looking at other government structures where access to healthcare is much better. For instance, in the Netherlands, most people have easy access to primary care centers. Health insurance is mandatory; however, it is much more affordable and accessible than our choices here in the USA. If I could make a change, I would entertain an offering similar to that in the Netherlands or even Switzerland, which includes universal coverage through mandatory yet affordable private insurance."

I believe that we are evolving fast, and I am happy to see how far this patient-centered attitude has come since I started my educational path within medicine."

A patient would not have to decide which medication will be more beneficial to their well-being nor should they end up in an emergency department because they could not afford their medications. "When it comes to controversial topics such as abortion, euthanasia, physician-assisted suicide, and cloning, I will give my opinions more freely in a social setting with friends versus in the workplace or around patients. If at work, I would try to keep my personal opinion to myself or at the very least remain diplomatic by expressing how each side has their right to an opinion."

"In a workplace setting, I tend to keep my opinions private because I know there might be somebody who doesn't agree with them, and it might make for a hostile work atmosphere. But usually, I'll share my opinions in a comfortable setting like with friends or family."

"I do not share my opinions with the majority of people I encounter. I believe that everyone is welcome to having and sharing their own opinion as long as they are not unkind when expressing their thoughts. I have no issue when people share their opinions with me. I listen attentively but do not offer an opinion in response."

Walk us through your approach to studying for exams.

"I am a well-organized student and have a study plan that works very well for me. When I prepare for a specific exam, I will map out the content I need to learn and divide that content over the number of days I have available to prepare. When creating a study calendar, I leave the final three days leading up to the exam to review the entire library of content. I am a big fan of study aids, as I believe they work much better than simply reading and re-reading the materials. Aids such as flashcards are also much more helpful than highlighting my notes. I also create practice problems and, when possible, will pair up with fellow students to test each other in written form or verbal lightning rounds. My approach has been successful, as reflected in my overall GPA."

It's important to me that my education is from a notable school. Knowing that KCU is one of the original osteopathic medical schools in the United States makes me confident that I would receive unmatched education here. I was pleased to discover that KCU is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and that the College of Osteopathic Medicine is accredited by the AOA."

"My mom has always inspired me to persevere through life's obstacles because these challenges are learning experiences and opportunities to build my character. There were times when some academic challenges felt impossible to overcome. Still, she reminded me of the tenacity and grit required to reach my goal of being accepted into medical school. Her wisdom shifted my mindset from 'unfair' to 'opportunity,' and I could never thank her enough for that gift."

"At this point in my medical studies, I am most interested in brain injuries and their impact on our quality of life. I bring the compassion required to make a difference in this therapeutic area. I saw my brother's communication and physical abilities shift quite dramatically after sustaining a concussion from a hit during a football game. My parents took him to many doctors' appointments, physical therapy, and speech therapy sessions. After a few months of seeing a series of medical professionals, I was mesmerized by the change I saw in him. I am fascinated by neurological science and am eager to learn more while attending the COM program at Kansas City University."

"It was challenging to decide which KCU campus was most enticing to me! I researched the respective cities and considered which one I could happily live in for the next few years. I found that Joplin's advantages were that it's a smaller, more intertwined town. Kansas City has other major medical institutions, so I wondered if I would feel 'lost in the crowd,' so to speak. Since the curriculum is the same in both locations, I would prefer the vibe of the Joplin campus. I am a big foodie, art enthusiast, and lover of the outdoors so I look forward to taking advantage of the scenery surrounding the Joplin campus."

"I recently read a paper by Dr. Lea Baider and Dr. Simon Wein on the realities of physicians facing death regularly. The paper suggested that physicians who are successful in dealing with death at appropriate times do so by compartmentalizing their day's events. The paper went on to say that if a physician is to split the mechanics of the problem from the emotional side, the physician can continue to function without the emotions getting in the way. This is an excellent recommendation, but it is also important to choose an appropriate time to address those emotions. For me, this would perhaps mean having a mentor or even counselor whom I could visit regularly. Also, not internalizing a death or placing blame on myself for the event."

"I have lost patients and clients that I have known well. While death may be painful, it is natural and sometimes can even be a relief from suffering. I will always do everything in my power to ease the pain of others, but I understand there will be limits to what can be done for them."

"I have never been a queasy individual, and I fully understand the types of cases I will see in my career as a physician. Currently, I work part-time at our local drop-in shelter and have seen a wide range of situations involving blood and such. I don't think about the gore but more about the fact that it's a human who needs my help. I believe this mentality will get me through any gruesome or undesirable situation."

Are there any situations when a physician is justified in lying to a patient?

"I understand that the only reason a physician should withhold information from a patient is under the premise of therapeutic privilege. This concept describes situations where a patient could be a threat to themselves if the physician fully disclosed the details of their medical situation. This concept generally refers to the patient being a psychological threat to themselves. Although there is support for this idea, I do not feel that it should be exercised unless the case is extreme. Physicians have a fiduciary duty to their patients, which must be taken seriously."

With this question, the admissions team is questioning your knowledge, character, and ethics at the same time. Prepare a well-versed answer for this question as it may come up many times during medical school and into your career. Research the concept of 'therapeutic privilege' and then create your response. "I believe patients are entitled to the truth. In the same way that patients have to be truthful to doctors for accurate diagnosis, doctors need to disclose the entire facts to their patients. I think it's very important for a doctor to deliver a complete picture of their patient's prognosis and treatment options so patients can take an active role in their own healthcare."

"I would think a situation where a physician had to lie to save a life would be justifiable."

"The only scenario that would justify being dishonest is the therapeutic privilege. This is an uncommon reality, so in a majority of scenarios, it is our duty to be honest with our patients."

"No. a physician should not lie, but there are exceptions to that rule such as therapeutic privileges."

"There are never any situations that justify lying except in psychological cases of therapeutic privilege."

If you discovered that a classmate was cheating, how would you react?

"The medical field should only support honorable people who do the right thing and vow to do no harm. If I encountered a classmate cheating, I would discreetly tell the administration, a professor, or a dean to ensure the situation was resolved quickly and with minimal disruption to others. An honorable person will do what is right even when nobody is looking, and a career in medicine must remain open only to those with integrity."
