"The achievement I am most proud of so far is completing my undergraduate studies with a GPA of 3.8. I managed to keep a high GPA and exceed in all my courses while getting married, wedding planning, and moving to a new state. This experience taught me to manage my time, focus on what is important, enjoy every moment, and give it my all. This change came with many emotions, and I am proud of myself for succeeding in my studies and graduating with my bachelor's."

"I see that one thing Emerson College prides itself on is its research opportunities. What are some exciting goals your faculty or students are currently working toward?"

Talk about a time when you showed initiative by taking the lead on a team-based project.

"(Situation) When I first started my summer job as the Admin Assistant for a medical clinic, I took it upon myself to organize the digital files for the clinic. (Task) The files were a mess, and I was the person who had the time to take care of them. (Action) Organizing these files was a huge challenge, but I tackled 100 documents per day on a schedule that I had created for myself. In 20 days, I finished. (Result) I was pleased with my ability to take on a project that nobody else wanted to do, and my manager was thrilled with the initiative that I showed."

"(Situation) I spend the summer months working in my mom's medical clinic. Recently, she asked me to clean out the clinic's huge supply closet. (Task) It was a daunting job. The room was very disorganized and had been a neglected task for some time. I knew it was up to me to put my whole heart into the task to make the lives of my co-workers so much better through the art of organization. (Action) I came to work over the next four days, prepared with comfortable clothes and shoes, and tackled the job. I created a pile for keep, one for recycling, one for donating, and one for the garbage. (Result) In the end, the supply room looked like an office supply store! Everyone appreciated my hard work, and I was glad that I chose to shift my mindset and find the motivation to get the job done with enthusiasm."

"(Situation) Last year, I received a low grade on a psychology project. When I approached my professor about the low grade, he said, 'You can do better. I expected more from you.' (Task) I was taken aback at first, but once I had time to absorb what was said, I realized that he expected more from me because he had high expectations of what I could do. It was a compliment and a challenge at the same time. (Action) I re-did the assignment with more enthusiasm and passion the second time around. (Result) My grade improved significantly, and I thanked that professor for holding me to a higher standard."

Feedback will not always come in a friendly manner. When that happens, we can feel criticized. Then, it's easy for human nature to take over and for us to feel defensive. The admissions team at Emerson College wants to see that you are confident and mature enough to accept feedback or criticism with maturity. Think of a time when you received feedback or criticism that was a bit hurtful or surprising. Discuss how you reacted productively. "During my freshman year English course, we were to write a paper and then meet with our professor to go over the paper five different times. After a few times of meeting with the professor, it felt as if nothing in my paper was how she exactly wanted it. The last time I finally met with her, she discussed how well I had taken all of her structural criticism, and I later realized that all she was trying to do was to push me to write to my best ability. I truly respect her for doing that because it has only made me a better writer today."

"I respond very well. I believe that criticism is what teaches us! I worked at a dental office about a year ago as an assistant. While the dentist was doing an exam, she pointed out that I did not get one of the back molars cleaned well enough and she showed me how to better reach the area. I thanked her for pointing it out and for teaching me how to do better work."

"Knowing that I had put my all into my work, I would be slightly taken aback. However, I would not let this put me down, and I would reevaluate my work and see where I can improve. In a team setting, it is important to have critical criticism to grow."

"Even though I enjoyed having my own client my first semester, it was very much a learning curve for me. I realized I was strong in creating therapy activities, but according to my supervisor, the professionalism of my lesson plans and reports lacked. I wrote the incorrect date on my lesson plans sometimes and I did not include a crucial point the first time I wrote my report. For this reason, my supervisor refused to write me a letter of recommendation. Even though I was taken aback by her comments, I responded calmly by saying that I appreciate her for being honest with me and thanked her for spending the time to tell me what I need to work on. As a result, I thought of ways to improve my professional writing for reports and lesson plans. By doing so, I examined some examples of report writing based on the professional language and made sure that I put the correct date on my lesson plans. My grade in the clinic was then raised from a B- to a B because of this improvement. Criticism to me is only to give me an awareness of my weak spots and a chance to grow in those areas."

What are your research interests?

"At this point in my journey to becoming an SLP, I'm most interested in working with special needs children in an educational setting. I'd like to participate in research focusing on children undergoing active speech therapy and how it impacts their educational progression. I was happy to learn that Communication Sciences and Disorders students at Emerson College are given the opportunity to work in various clinical settings, including public and private schools. I am confident that attending Emerson will help me further explore my specific interests in this therapeutic field."

Why did you decide to become a Speech- Language Pathologist?

"I decided that a career in speech-language pathology was right for me after attending speech therapy in high school. I sustained a head injury after a sporting accident and was referred to a highlight skilled SLP. The work this practitioner did with me was life-changing. When I was able to see the difference this profession makes in people's lives, it was a light-bulb moment for me. The profession requires empathy and patience, which are characteristics I innately have but also further developed after my first-hand experience requiring the help of an SLP."

In addition to the advantage in pay and the potential to build a private practice one day, other perks capture my interest, such as the flexibility I would have in therapy techniques and the wide range of cases I could work with. Saying this, I realize that once I have completed the program at Emerson, I will have gained exposure to numerous work environments and opportunities, potentially leading me down another path of interest. I look forward to learning more about how I can positively impact others as an SLP in an education environment, a hospital, or a public care facility."

Speech-Language Pathologists can find work in various fields, including educational services, hospitals, nursing, and residential care facilities, physical, occupational, audiology, and speech therapy offices, and self-employment. "My long-term career goal is to open a private practice focused on helping preschool-age children improve or overcome various language disorders. Specifically, I envision this private practice specializing in receptive and expressive language skills building. For instance, leading exercises that help children build receptive language skills like following directions, understanding common gestures, and knowing how to take turns when talking. The expressive language skills we would focus on in this private practice include asking questions, putting words together into sentences, and learning songs and rhymes. I'd like the programs to involve a range of exercises and modes of therapy that are fun for children so that they want to come to the clinic rather than be afraid of any treatment. First, I look forward to gaining the necessary foundations for my career from the Communications Disorders program here at Emerson College."

"My passion is child speech and language disorders, and I have a specific interest in Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders. For that reason, one year after graduating from Emerson's Communications Disorders program, I envision myself working in a school for special needs children. Here, I could provide a range of treatments to support these patients, including teaching them to be mindful of their tongue and mouth muscles when they speak, drink, and eat. Or teaching them to say sounds more clearly. I can work with patients to change how they chew and swallow and even introduce and practice different breathing patterns."

This way, we can create a set of goals, and I can incorporate their most important goals into their therapy plan."

Would your friends or family say that you have patience?

"Patience is an important characteristic for an SLP, and yes, I am confident that my friends and family would say that I have patience. I can step back from frustrating moments and assess the issue without reacting inappropriately. I am the type of person who can objectively evaluate how to proceed with a given situation rather than react emotionally. Through my education, I have experienced many situations that have required patience, and my ability to set emotion aside and think objectively has been critical to my academic success."

As an aspiring speech-language pathologist, you must have patience and empathy with your clients. How would your favourite professor describe you and your work ethic?

"I had a strong and positive connection with my English professor at ABC University. I can think of one particular assignment where they complimented me on the care and diligence I put into my research and my ability to take complex concepts and explain them in a digestible manner. If asked, I believe this professor would describe me as thorough, a strong critical thinker, and a person capable of taking on and mastering assignments on complex topics. Should I be accepted at Emerson College, I'll be sure to apply this same work ethic and diligence to my studies."

"I struggle with self-doubts, and I sometimes fixate on my insecurities. I believe this issue stems from being told that I had dyslexia, but not until I was in Grade 4. In the years before this, I felt unintelligent compared to my peers and didn't know what was 'wrong' with me. Even in my first year of college years, I let my insecurities get the better of me. I was less social than I should have been, which resulted in missing some great opportunities. However, by my second year of college, I started attending therapy and reading books on self-esteem and confidence building. By developing myself in the area of personal growth, I have made strides in my self-esteem. Today, I realize that my story will help me make meaningful connections with my patients when I practice as a speech-language pathologist. This story will not continue to hold me back; rather, I plan to use it as a gift to help others feel more confident and know that they are not alone."

While I enjoy working independently and tend to have a laser focus when I do things on my own, I know that there are plenty of experts with specific knowledge and skills, and it would really benefit me to seek support from these individuals, as they can guide me in the right direction and improve my work. I am actively working to improve my collaboration skills and my ability to ask for help. Last year, when my undergraduate classes went online, I was a bit confused about how to complete the online assignments, and I needed to ask my peers for help. The ability to ask for help improved the outcome of my work, and it is a skill that I plan to continue developing while I am attending Emerson."

"Before choosing which schools to apply to, I researched extensively. First, I referred to Top Masters in Health Care and U.S. News for their rankings of the best speech pathology programs in the U.S. Then, I looked at each program's completion statistics and PRAXIS examination pass rates, location, clinical placement site information, faculty research interests, and specialties classes/labs/programs the school had to offer. After doing this research, I knew that Emerson College would be the best fit for me. The CSD Research Suite will allow me to gain research experience in cutting-edge laboratory facilities. I also appreciate that during my clinical practice, this program provides the opportunity to participate in multiple clinical settings while evaluating and treating a wide variety of culturally and linguistically diverse individuals."

"I felt well prepared for the questions asked by the admissions team. I answered honestly and to the best of my ability. Overall, I am happy with my performance. My interest in Emerson College is strong because the Communications Disorders program takes advantage of Emerson's technologically enhanced classrooms and laboratories, the on-campus Robbins Speech-Language and Hearing Center, and a wide variety of off-campus community clinical sites. I appreciate that the CSD Research Suite will allow me to partner with the department's faculty to gain research experience in Emerson's cutting-edge laboratory facilities. "I just finished reading a book called 'Thirty Million Words: Building A Child's Brain' by Dana Suskind. This book provides an interesting perspective on our influence on the young children we work with and the ones we raise. So far, this book has broadened my perspective through research on children who hear 30 million words by the age of four versus those not exposed to a wide vocabulary. I highly recommend this book for any aspiring speech-language pathologists."

Tell us about your overall academic performance, so far. Where have you excelled, and where could you improve?

"I am very proud of the achievements I earned during my undergrad. The courses I completed gave me incredible knowledge and good habits that l will bring to Emerson College's Communication Sciences and Disorders program. My best courses included Language Acquisition and Clinical Phonetics, and the specialization that interests me most is Tracheostomy and Ventilator Dependence. As far as areas of improvement, I can better my time management. I overextended myself last semester with volunteer opportunities, and my study habits suffered slightly. Now that I have identified the reason behind my time management challenges, I will only see improvement in my grades and overall preparedness."

I felt I had given everything to that paper, yet the professor poked holes in my writing. (Action) After receiving the criticism on my paper, I took the time to walk outside and get some fresh air while reflecting on my frustration. This small break helped me set my self-doubts aside and reflect on what I could learn from the experience. In that instance, I sought help from my academic advisor. My advisor reassured me that I have to be comfortable making mistakes as an undergraduate clinician because learning can be a trial-by-error experience. She encouraged me to make the corrections and save that final draft as an example to go back to for my future reports. (Result) Because of this experience, I am confident that I can emotionally handle setbacks that arise during my time at Emerson College and my career as an SLP."

Everyone handles the stress and disappointment of setbacks differently. When you work in a therapeutic specialty, those setbacks can be amplified. I would be as discreet as possible, ensuring the situation was resolved with minimal disruption to my other classmates. I believe that honest people choose to do what is right even when nobody is looking. The field of speech-language pathology deserves only honest people who do the right thing and would never do anything to hurt or deceive their patients."
