Yahoo celebrates diversity. In which ways do you celebrate those different from you?

Diversity and inclusion are celebrated topics at Yahoo, and the interviewer would like to know that you share this mindset. Efforts at Yahoo could include educating hiring authorities on diversity and inclusion, increasing transparency when it comes to their hiring practices, and creating integrity- driven and systematic approaches to hiring. Share with the interviewer the ways that you celebrate diversity and inclusion.

      Rachelle's Answer

"As a visible minority myself, I make a conscious effort to include others in learning about my unique culture. Also, I am broad-minded with it comes to the needs and differences of others. Diversity, to me, is not simply a matter of culture but also of gender identity, age, and more. I am conscious of being sensitive to others in every action that I take in the workplace."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I appreciate the open and transparent effort that Yahoo makes when it comes to diversity and inclusion in the workplace. I embrace those different from me and utilize those differences as learning opportunities. I am sensitive to the needs of others and empathetic to the fact that everyone walks a different path, whether that be related to gender identity, sexual orientation, heritage, and more."

How is social media changing the way people consume news, today? What can Yahoo do to remain relevant?

With 'fake news' running rampant, we are quick to blame online content and social media platforms for the misinformation. Today, people read an article or a post, share it, it goes viral, and before you know it, millions of people are misinformed about an important topic. However, it isn't all bad!

Social platforms allow people, who may otherwise not take the time to sit down and watch a network news program, to stay in-the-know. Talk to the interviewer about what Yahoo News can do to embrace this movement. Be sure to compliment them on the efforts they already have in place.

      Rachelle's Answer

"I believe that social media has changed the way people consume news today in both positive and harmful ways. We do have a lot more 'fake news' going on today, being spread rapidly due to the ease of social sharing. With that said, social media is now the primary source of news online, giving broadcasters a unique opportunity to put out omnichannel content, furthering their reach. From what I see, Yahoo News is doing an excellent job in remaining relevant. My only suggestion would be to increase the content on Instagram's IGTV for your 146K+ faithful followers."

      Rachelle's Answer

"Social media is broadening the conversation to include people who would otherwise not take the time to be involved in current events. Take political campaigns these days, and how many more people are going out to vote or even becoming involved in social movements such as #metoo. I follow Yahoo News closely on multiple channels and think you are doing an excellent job in remaining relevant and staying in the conversation. Creating viral hashtags is another valuable effort that I can help Yahoo with, should I be the successful candidate."

  3. 3.

This role with Yahoo is highly technical. What is your understanding of this position and the responsibilities that come with it?

Yahoo is looking for those who are curious and collaborative visionaries. They seek out those excited about tackling web technology's hardest problems. Assure the interviewer that you bring the technical chops required to succeed in this particular job. It is essential that you research the role and thoroughly consume the information provided in the company's job posting/job description. Keep your answer to the point.

      Rachelle's Answer

"I feel that the job is best described as a software engineer focused on devising innovative ideas for solving Cloud customer problems and then translating those ideas into technical designs. I will also be expected to provide technical leadership and solve highly difficult end-to-end problems. The technical requirements that you would like to see are Java, C/C++, C#, Objective C, Python, JavaScript, or Go. I am well versed in the tasks, languages, and programs you are asking for and am confident that I meet the strict requirements to perform in this role successfully."

      Rachelle's Answer

"My understanding is that you seek a candidate with expert level skills in Java, C/C++, C#, Objective C, and Python, who can train junior employees. I am an expert user in all three of these areas. Do you have any questions about my technical expertise?"

  4. 4.

Yahoo hosts hundreds of university outreach events to find top talent. How would you 'sell' Yahoo to a talented graduate?

You may think that everyone wants to work for Yahoo, but when it comes to the employment of recent grads, who display top talent in their field, the competition can be stiff. If you were at a university career fair, how would you sell Yahoo as an employer? Keep your answer to the point, exciting, and full of fun facts related to working for Yahoo.

      Rachelle's Answer

"If I were to sell the idea of working for Yahoo, I would sell the fact that once Yahoo is on your resume, you are set for life. Yahoo sets the stage not only for a successful career, but it also changes the mindset of each employee, teaching people to perform at a level that few others tap into."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I would sell Yahoo by reminding them that working for Yahoo is like winning the employment jackpot. Who wouldn't want to win that jackpot as their first move right out of university? You are the trailblazers of the internet and a household name; globally."

  5. 5.

How can Yahoo best combat hateful and abusive content or commenting on any of our platforms?

Yahoo plays an active part in fighting cyberbullying, harassment, and hate speech on their web platforms. Of course, this is not a perfect approach, as people can be vicious online, and it's nearly impossible to fight every single act that comes through. Discuss with the interviewer what you know to be the company's current approach, and what you believe can be done to make it even more impactful. There is no real right or wrong answer here as the interviewer simply wants to see that you have some valuable insight to offer.

      Rachelle's Answer

"First and foremost, I think the best first step is to make it very easy for someone to report unlawful or hateful content on the various Yahoo platforms. Next; offering a reward for user-moderated content could be another great approach. For instance, you could offer a small coupon or even public kudos in the form of a Yahoo points system when someone makes the right choice to report inappropriate content. It's crucial to disable accounts guilty of these acts, immediately. This action is something that I believe Yahoo is very good at taking."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I believe that to stop cyberbullying and offensive content online, it's important to create awareness around what is and is not acceptable. To hire moderators is, of course, effective, but not a completely bulletproof approach. Having a highly visible zero tolerance policy is an effective way to deter bad behavior, but Yahoo could look into unique ways of reinforcing good behavior through reward as well."

  6. 6.

What expertise do you bring in digital KPIs and analytics?

Be prepared to discuss with the interviewer the types of digital KPIs and analytics you are accustomed to tracking. Some critical KPIs in the world of digital content creation may include analytics around reach; including unique visits. Engagement rates; including time spent on your page, ad, or video. You may also look at the number of engaged comments or social sharing rates. Talk to the interviewer about the KPIs that you currently work with, and why you believe they are essential to track.

      Rachelle's Answer

"In my current role, the numbers that I care about the most include our sentiment rates. I look at the number of comments and engagement. I like to see soaring numbers when it comes to social media shares or @ tags. Nothing feels as great as seeing your digital content go viral, and I look forward to achieving more of that in my career with Yahoo."

      Rachelle's Answer

"When it comes to digital KPIs, my current employer puts a significant focus on social sharing and engaged comments. When digital content is good, viewers will quickly share without hesitation. When engagement rates are high, it's a quick indicator that your content is on point."

  7. 7.

What do you think you will like about this role with Yahoo?

The interviewer wants to hear what you are looking forward to learning and experiencing in this new position. Talk about what excites you! Share how this position will challenge you and help you grow. New opportunities are a chance for you to demonstrate your skills.

      Rachelle's Answer

"I look forward to working for a company that thinks big and takes risks. The idea that I could be a part of creating products and tools of the future, that will benefit billions of users, is inspiring to me."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I am looking forward to getting more experience in UI, and feel that Yahoo is the best place for me. You have a great reputation for creating beautiful and easy to use web-based services and products."

  8. 8.

How do you keep up-to-date on new technologies and trends in the web services industry?

One way that a potential employer will gauge 'fit' is by ensuring that you are passionate about the tech industry. Show the interviewer that you are passionate about your industry by openly discussing how you stay on top of industry trends and news.

      Rachelle's Answer

"I keep up to date on new technologies and web trends through a variety of sources. I follow blogs from industry leaders such as Elon Musk, Larry Page, and Guy Kawasaki. I also read multiple articles online from Yahoo news and your press releases."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I keep up on new trends in this industry by taking additional coursework online, whenever possible. I also follow a few of my favorite influencers on social media."

  9. 9.

What would you consider your technical specialty, and how does it relate to this job with Yahoo?

Think about your particular areas of interest or ability. Talk to the interviewer about your strengths and be sure to highlight any specific skills that you excel in. It's a great idea, if you can, to highlight particular skills listed on the Yahoo job description. If there is a related area of interest where you'd like to expand your capabilities, you can mention those as well.

      Rachelle's Answer

"Computer Science and technical ecosystems have always been a solid area for me. I have a big interest in how network communication improves our daily lives and our overall business efficiency. I see that you are looking for team members who are experts in network communications, which is what caught my eye when I first saw your job posting."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I have been focusing my career on mastering JavaScript and Node ecosystems, and I do have cross-platform app development expertise as well."

  10. 10.

How do you ensure you are aware of all the new advertising platform developments?

Most companies competing in the web services industry understand the importance of professional growth concerning product specific and technical knowledge.

Yahoo would like to know that you find continued learning meaningful and want to understand how you go about remaining current with competitive offerings and new technologies. This approach may include both formal and informal learning opportunities. Be sure to specify any proactive measures you take to educate yourself continually.

      Rachelle's Answer

"The competitive landscape for advertising platforms is constantly changing, so I find it is important to remain current with new products and service offerings. Regularly, I set aside time to read industry-specific news where I learn about new companies entering the industry and the products they offer. Also, I look for opportunities to attend conferences and training sessions where I learn of emerging technologies related to advertising platforms. These opportunities also allow me to network and learn from my industry peers."

      Rachelle's Answer

"In addition to attending industry conferences and training seminars, I also find the time to research competitors. If hired, I would compare the attributes of Yahoo's advertising platform to those used by the clients of our competitors. This approach would allow me to keep a pulse on the new developments of other advertising platforms. I also believe it may help Yahoo's teams generate ideas for new offerings of its own."

  11. 11.

What methods do you use, to work within a brand's voice consistently?

When working on digital content, you will be asked to remain in line with your employers brand, and even perhaps the brand of your clients. The interviewer would like to know how you ensure that you maintain a brand's voice, consistently delivering it across multiple platforms or channels. Discuss your best methods for preserving the brand voice, and be sure to express that you understand the importance of this skill.

      Rachelle's Answer

"One tool that my current employer uses, and I find to be very helpful, is our internal Style Guide. This style guide is a tool for writers, producers, and creatives of all kinds, to refer to when they are unsure if their idea is on-track with the company's brand. Another method that I refer to often is to first storyboard the 'voice' that I want before beginning a project. I can create a clear narrative around the marketing effort very early on in the project."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I fully understand how critical it is to work within a brand's voice consistently throughout a project. One method that I enjoy using is to create a guide that outlines the jargon or colloquialisms that are acceptable to use in the campaign. Somewhat like a style guide, but easier to refer back to. I also feel it's important to make the voice of a brand a company-wide initiative so that co-workers can check in with each other to ensure all work is consistent and the best it can be."

  12. 12.

We want to hire people at Yahoo who have the desire to lead others. How many people did you supervise in your last position?

Discuss with the interviewer your level of responsibility in your current position. If you have managed larger teams than you currently are, you can also discuss that particular role from your work history. Show confidence and competency in your response.

      Rachelle's Answer

"Currently, I am supervising 12 employees with an overall portfolio responsibility of $24MM. In my role, before this one, I managed 23 employees but with a smaller portfolio of $6MM. I can handle a large range of employees."

      Rachelle's Answer

"Although I did not officially supervise anyone in my most recent position, I always had my eye out for opportunities to lead or mentor the more junior staff."

  13. 13.

Working at Yahoo, you will experience changes regularly. When have you had to change a significant component of your project due to new information being presented?

Yahoo thinks big and takes risks. What comes with this mentality is continual change and new approaches. Being able to swivel the focus of your project is a necessary skill for your success in most careers. Talk to the interviewer about a time when a significant change occurred on a project. How did you handle the implementation of the new information?

      Rachelle's Answer

"I had a large project last month that was mapped out entirely when the client called to say that their budget was slashed in half. Because of this, our team had to re-do the entire proposal. It took us an additional four days of work, but, in the end, the client was delighted with our work, and it resulted in new opportunities with them."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I would say that being in the software and technology business means changing major components on projects on a very regular basis. I am very well accustomed to changing gears on a moment's notice and can adapt very well."

  14. 14.

How has video streaming changed the way you consume web content?

The interviewer is curious how often you stream content versus using more traditional broadcasting methods to consume your content. Share how the introduction of video streaming has changed the way you watch your favorite shows, consume your news, look for videos, and even how you pay attention to media advertising.

      Rachelle's Answer

"I watch a lot of on-demand video streaming through sources such as Yahoo News, YouTube, and even IGTV. I believe that video streaming saves me a lot of time as it's now effortless to search for, and find, the videos that I want to watch. I also find that I pay more attention to ads since they are more interesting and relevant than many of the ads seen on television."

      Rachelle's Answer

"Video streaming certainly simplifies life; however, it puts me on my device more than ever. I like to consume content in smaller bits now, but that also means picking up my phone or tablet more often during the day. I think that streaming reduces the time I spend watching commercials, but the ads that I do see are much more targeted and relevant to me."

  15. 15.

What do you work on, in your spare time?

The interviewer would like to hear more about the interests that keep you occupied, outside of your work. There is no wrong or right response to this question; however, you want to ensure that you are insightful and show an interest in activities that will resonate with Yahoo and their culture. You could mention volunteer time, family events, books that you like to read, or ways that you enjoy further educating yourself.

      Rachelle's Answer

"In my spare time, I love to read books on how technology shapes our lives and the future of business. I also spend time with my kids and am a volunteer little league coach. I am usually on the go and thoroughly enjoy being an active part of my community."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I spend a lot of hours as a volunteer, outside of work hours. It's important to me to give back to those around me so I will work at the drop-in center every Saturday morning, serving breakfast to the less fortunate. Also, I enjoy outdoor activities such as mountain climbing and kayaking."
