During my rotation in an urgent care setting, I used a translator a few times. How to Answer
Access to care in both hospitals and clinics is an issue many organizations face throughout the entire world. The reasons that lead to patients facing long waiting periods to see a provider are many and can include provider shortages, nursing shortages, increased healthcare regulation, transportation issues and geographic reasons, among many others. If you have experience being involved in a patient access project or initiative, talk about it and the role that you played in making it successful. If you don't have direct experience, explain why allowing as many patients as possible to receive care is important.
Written by Ryan Brunner on November 18th, 2018
1st Answer Example
"Throughout my career as a scheduler and moving into my current role in managing our clinic scheduling staff, patient access has always been a focus of my positions and initiatives have greatly evolved over time. Based on simple supply and demand, the first obvious steps in bettering patient access is ensuring that providers are working efficiently and effectively with each patient they see and that their schedules are updated on a minute to minute basis. Early in my career, I helped implement a policy and procedure that required our physicans to maintain an updated calendar personal time, CME time and meetings so our scheduling staff could efficiently build patient schedules around their non-clinic time. Following up to that, I also helped coordinate a patient time chart that outlined estimated times for standard clinic visits, simple procedures and complex patient follow-up appointments. Both changes in process helped improve both the efficiency of our providers and the number of patients that they could see in a given week."
Written by Ryan Brunner on November 18th, 2018
2nd Answer Example
"Being a new nurse, I haven't worked directly with any access initiatives yet but I fully understand that this is a challenge for many of today's healthcare organization. With the increase in severe conditions like cancer, COPD and other illnesses, clinics and hospitals are more commonly becoming over capacity and measures must be taken to ensure that patients can be seen in a timely basis. Can you talk about recent initiatives that your department has implemented to better access for patients?' "

Written by Ryan Brunner on November 18th, 2018
1st Answer Example
"During my career as a nurse in many different settings, no piece of technology has changed patient care more than the electronic medical record. In the early days of moving from paper charts to electronic records, the systems were extremely clunky and archaic to what they are today. As the systems progressed, more advancements were seen in patient history, diagnoses, prescription detail and radiology images. Now, as a primary care nurse, I can pull any data I could possibly need on a patient in real time and this greatly improves the care my physician and I can provide for them."
Written by Ryan Brunner on November 18th, 2018
2nd Answer Example
"The field of radiology is blessed to have seen so many great advancements in technology that have led to quicker and more accurate diagnoses for patients. Take for example the full body PET scan that is used to find blood clots in patients. Back when I started as an x-ray technician, this type of technology just wasn't available and potential stroke patients weren't able to be diagnosed ahead of time. Now, if risks of a stroke are present in an individual, the full body PET scan can be ordered. Just in the past month alone, I have witnessed three patients receive emergency surgery because of findings of the scan and to think that the scans potentially saved all three of their lives is amazing!"

Written by Ryan Brunner on November 18th, 2018
2nd Answer Example
"It's funny; they say people in medicine are 'lifelong learners'. But on top of that, we're in this digital revolution, and everyone has to learn new software all the time. I'm finally getting old enough to realize that its difficult to be constantly adapting. I think my 75-year-old aunt telling me how to use my iPhone helped me appreciate that it's all about humility. Not WHO is teaching you, but if you are willing to learn. In the medical context, I just took an updated CPR course, and it went from the 2:15 compressions to continuous compressions and I had to adapt to avoid my past way of thinking."

1st Answer Example
"In my most recent position we had a consistent problem with employees showing up late for their shifts or calling in sick at the very last moment. Rather than the typical documenting and reprimanding style that management usually takes, I decided to track the results of an accountability reward system. For 180 days, my employees were rewarded for coming to work 10 minutes early. Also, for every month with zero sick days, a bonus was added. In the end, we awarded those with perfect attendance a $600 bonus. The bonus' cost us less money, in the end than the cost of lowered productivity due to absent employees. The program was a success, and upper management chose to keep it implemented for another six months. We will re-assess in December, but it seems to be working very well."
Written by Ryan Brunner on November 18th, 2018
2nd Answer Example
"I was working in a clinic where the primary population was low income. We had a lot of concerns with patients not showing up for appointments when expected. The staff wanted to start double-booking patient time slots. Instead, I got permission to spend a day in a highly-rated clinic serving the same population. Instead of scheduling, they had these 'drop-in mornings' with a common waiting room. I took these methods and incorporated them into our setting. We did that twice a week, and it completely solved our scheduling problem."

Prior to the training for our staff, I had become frustrated at times when I would open a patients electronic record and not see thorough patient notes from caregivers at our facility. This hindered my ability to care for some patients properly as I wasn't able to understand medication dosages, prior visit notes or any follow up I should've been performing. The changes in procedure were well received by all."

"I am an easily motivated individual, and it does not take much to keep me engaged. I am fully aware that healthcare-related positions can seem thankless. Honestly, the best thanks that I can get is a pat on the back now and then. The majority of my motivation comes from simply helping people."
Written by Ryan Brunner on November 18th, 2018
2nd Answer Example
"My chosen career was helping people at exactly the point they were least capable of censoring themselves or giving back. So, I stopped needing thanks from my patients. It's not like I don't need positive reinforcement. Everyone does. But I made a point to find it in other places instead of expecting it from my patients. Nowadays I make an effort to expressly thank the people I work with when they do a good job. I focus on being grateful to be allowed to see private, raw, emotional parts of peoples lives. And I make work-related goals I can achieve for satisfaction."

1st Answer Example
"Being a nurse at a dialysis clinic, I get the opportunity to build great relationships with my patients that I see three times a week for months and sometimes years. Many of these patients have primary care doctors outside of our system. Just a few weeks ago, a gentleman that I had been working with for many months was talking about how he was experiencing some severe pain in his legs and the fact that they were falling asleep and becoming numb at times. I stressed to the patient that it was important he see his doctor as soon as he could for further testing as those symptoms. I asked the patient if it was okay if I contact his primary care physician and while hesitant at first, he okay'd it. During my lunch break, I reached out to the patients physician and left him a voicemail. We were able to connect later and the physician informed me that he would be seeing our mutual patient the next day. On Friday of that week, I was notified that the patient had emergency surgery to remove a blood clot in his leg and the surgery potentially saved his life."

2nd Answer Example
"As a Nurse Practitioner in an Urgent Care setting, I see a wide variety of patients on a daily basis and unfortunately don't get to build established care relationships with them. Because of this, patient documentation and follow up with other providers is extremely important in my job. Last year, a young mother came to our facility with a very sick two-year old daughter. While in my care, the mother explained that they were new to the area and hadn't established a pediatrician for her daughter for follow-up after my severe ear infection diagnosis. Being from out of the country and speaking little English, I knew that only a small amount of providers would be perfect for them.
After making some recommendations to her of our Pediatric providers, I sent a communication to our providers explaining the mother and her daughters needs as ESL patients and one of our Latino Pediatric physicians reached back out to me to let me know that the patient was coming to see him. While not a part of my job duties, I was very glad to hear that the scared young mother would be establishing care with a provider within our clinic"

2nd Answer Example
"Throughout my career as a nurse, the safety of myself, my colleagues and my patients has always been a top priority on my job. In the OR, there are many safety hazards. I work daily with sharp tools and bodily fluids that could pose harm to me or my colleagues when we are alongside a patient in surgery. A clean house starts with us and I do my best to ensure that our OR is in great shape for each patient. To ensure the safety of my patients, I am very thorough about preparing for each case by reading patients notes and updating the surgeon of any patient issues that may arise during surgery. As well, I never hesitate to point out safety issues to my fellow coworkers because we can all lean on each other at times when it comes to keeping everyone protected in our workplace."

"I have three philosophies when it comes to my work. One for the clinic, one for me, and one for the patient. First, I work in a system, and I respect that. I follow the rules, I maintain my certifications, and I appreciate the policies and values of whatever site I work. Patient care is a privilege, and I respect the role I have in clinical care and the part other people have. Second, I want to be the best at what I do. Every day I learn something, and that's because I choose to get better.
Last, I adapt to the individual. If I'm meeting the requirements of my position, and evolving within my profession, then I am free to adjust to my patient and be the provider they need. Some patients need a lot of attention; some want less, and some need boundaries. I have trained myself to adapt my communication style, so a patient gets what they need."

How to Answer
With the sub specialization of medical specialties becoming more and more commonplace in health systems both large and small, patients often have to bee seen by many different providers during their time of care. "Working as a lab technician, I have the opportunity to work with physicians, mid-level providers and nursing staff all over our hospital and clinics. Lab orders come from hospitalists, primary care providers, surgeons and many more and I have to ensure that my documentation on patients is spot on every single time. Oftentimes, patients are being seen by a few different providers and that makes my documentation even more important. When patients are in our care and then discharged, I ensure that our medical records are passed along to primary care providers so our patients are cared for as best as possible when they leave us. Having the opportunity to come work for Wellstar is very exciting as a lot of the hurdles we have to jump through on patient documentation will be made so much easier with patients being with one system for most, if not all, of their care."
