1. We seek to hire individuals who embrace integrity, which is one of our company's values. When have you demonstrate integrity on the job?
How to Answer
Integrity is critical in all of the work that UnitedHealth Group performs, particularly as it pertains to patient privacy and confidentiality. Honoring commitments and always taking the ethical high ground with integrity is one of the company's core values and you will be expected to live this value every day as an employee with the company. In posing this question, your interviewer wants to be sure that you will always be honest and ethical in the work you will be doing. They want to hear you discuss a time when you had to show a high degree of integrity. Discuss the mental approach you took to ensure doing the right thing was easy for you.
Written by Ryan Brunner on January 18th, 2024
Answer Example
"Early in my career, a colleague of mine faxed patient information to a doctor's office, but the sent confirmation never came back. She then noticed she had faxed it to the wrong location. Of course, this is something that needs to be reported. After telling me about her error, she told me that she wasn't going to report it. I talked through the initial fear of admitting the mistake to our supervisor and reminded her that ultimately this was against HIPAA guidelines. She finally agreed to tell our supervisor, the incident was reported to the patient, and protocols were followed. It was a simple mistake, but the consequences required us to do the right thing. I want you to be assured that medical ethics is something I take very seriously and would bring to the UnitedHealth Group team at all times."

2. Have you ever had to go above and beyond the call of duty on the job in the past? What do you think are some ways team members at UnitedHealth Group do this?
How to Answer
UnitedHealth Group's mission in seeking to enhance the overall health care system and improve the overall health and well-being of the people they serve often requires going the extra mile, far beyond a standard job description. Try to think of a time when you took the initiative to think outside the box and go above what was required of you to provide a great result or satisfy a customer. As you answer, it's important to explain why you decided to take this action. Then, make sure to speak to UHG's core values of innovation and performance as you explain the ways that the role you are interviewing for could go the extra mile.
Written by Ryan Brunner on January 18th, 2024
Answer Example
"Yes, I certainly have and am always willing and ready to do so as part of the UnitedHealth Group team to help satisfy a client. I know that they are the lifeblood of your success and can envision that your team works tirelessly to research claim inquiries and ensure that quick payment recovery occurs for clients. Looking back over the last five years of my career in my current role, I think of one particular client I was supporting who was having a lot of trouble reading and deciphering billing statements and insurance charges they were receiving. Knowing that this elderly individual was lost in the process, I read through her statements with her and noticed that there were likely some coding errors that could alter what was actually being covered by insurance. I encouraged her to call the provider's office to clarify, and I was sure glad I did because a majority of her re-coded things ended up being covered. I was certainly happy to provide this extra service for her."

3. How would you be able to handle the day-to-day stresses that come with working here?
How to Answer
In their work around the world with government entities, employers, and providers, UnitedHealth Group provides care for 152 million people. No matter what position you are being considered for there, the large volume of current work and future innovations will make for a demanding workload. Being able to successfully manage the expected stress from a high workload is a skill your interviewer will want to understand that you have, so they pose this question. The best way to answer a question like this is to discuss positions you've held that came with a lot of stress and then elaborate on how you managed that stress. Try to focus on your ability to prioritize tasks and stay focused on one thing at a time. This is also a great time to mention the things that you feel might be stressful about the job you are interviewing for with UHG and the ways you focus your personal life on being stress-free at work.
Written by Ryan Brunner on January 18th, 2024
Answer Example
"Over the past four years of my career coming out of college, I've received a crash course in how to handle a high-paced and high-stress work environment. For me personally, handling high-pressure work comes down to my ability to stay organized and focused on one task at a time. I utilize my calendar and a task list to keep me on track with deadlines and important meetings. If things become too overwhelming in my work, I stay in communication with my colleagues and my manager. A primary care clinic like this can be very busy at times from what I understand from the team here today, and I would come to UnitedHealth Group ready to successfully navigate those challenges and ensure all patients walk away with a smile on their face."

4. Working at UnitedHealth Group, there are many emotions that staff can experience in a day. Have your emotions ever been in the way of your productivity on the job?
How to Answer
One of UnitedHealth Group's core values is compassion, and they display this in the way they listen, value, and respect all voices. If your role there will be client-facing, you will be working closely with insured members or patients who could be in sickness or financial hardship. While working with them in empathy, their situation can directly impact your emotions. It will be vital for your interviewer to know that you will never let your emotions get in the way of your work, so they pose this question. This is the time to talk about the parts of your previous jobs where letting your emotions get the best of you would have been easy, but you fought through it to work hard and provide great results. Ensure your interviewer that you are aware of what aspects of the job could become emotionally demanding and talk about how you will combat that with UnitedHealth Group.
Written by Ryan Brunner on January 18th, 2024
Answer Example
"No, I have never let my emotions take over my work in the past, and want you to know that I would always remain focused on the task at hand as part of the UnitedHealth Group team. In my career in the family practice setting, I've worked with patients who were suffering from some debilitating conditions, and it was difficult to see areas of their lives impacted by the conditions. I know that my role was to always provide hope and promise through treatments and the patients I worked with relied upon my ability to do so. In this role, maintaining a compassionate and educational approach with patients in tough situations will always be my approach."

How to Answer
When working behind the scenes for members at UnitedHealth Group, it can sometimes feel like your work will go unnoticed by those who matter. This is especially true for the many remote and telework positions the company utilizes. In asking this question, your interviewer would like to know how they could continue to motivate you, even on the hardest of days. This question is a great opportunity for your interviewer to get to know you and your work style a bit better, so be open and honest about how you like to be recognized and motivated on the job. 7. At UnitedHealth Group, we believe in continuous feedback from our members, customers, and network of providers. Tell me about a time you received constructive feedback on the job. What did you do after hearing this?
How to Answer
Each year, UnitedHealth Group puts out a National Account Client Survey to gain insight on how to improve their health plan experience. On top of this, the company is always open to feedback on their claims, billing, and other important processes that both providers and members experience. This seeking of continuous improvement also extends to the staff of the company, so it will be important for your interviewer to understand how you handle feedback in your work. In asking this question, your interviewer ideally wants to hear that you can take criticism without getting your feelings hurt and turn that criticism into a positive outcome. Be open and honest about a time you received feedback and make sure to focus on the mindset you had following that and the improvement that you made because of it.
Written by Ryan Brunner on January 18th, 2024
Answer Example
"Early in my career as an actuary, I was inadvertently not following a company procedure on proper documentation and filing of work that my department was doing and it wasn't noticed by my manager until I had been on the job for almost six months. She sat me down and went through the procedure in full and I of course was very apologetic. As it turned out, my orientation didn't fully cover this procedure and, since I was working away from our home office, it had gone unnoticed. Fortunately, I had saved all of my work in a secure place and was able to e-file it accordingly in very short order. Coming aboard here at UnitedHealth Group, I would focus my initial weeks on the job on proper documentation of work records to ensure this would never happen again."

8. In order to work here, you must be able to pass a criminal background check. Will you consent to a full background check upon hire?
How to Answer
According to their career site, both a drug test and background check are a part of the onboarding and pre-employment screening process at UnitedHealth Group. Additionally, if you will be involved in direct patient care, the state you are working in will require additional background check processes. This is a common question the company likes to ask to ensure that their top candidate will be willing to consent to a full background check and be able to pass their guidelines. If you have any marks on your criminal background, now is the time to disclose those. If any blemishes are found, your honesty about them during your interview process could mean a greater chance that the company will still hire you. Speak openly about your ability to pass UHG's background check and your willingness to comply with all steps of the onboarding process.
Written by Ryan Brunner on January 19th, 2024
Answer Example
"Yes, I would be so excited to accept an offer from UnitedHealth Group and comply with all pre-employment processes you require. In my current role, I'm required to submit to random drug screenings, and am happy to say that I am both alcohol and drug-free. Four years ago, I did receive a speeding violation and paid my fine right away. This does show up on criminal background checks and wanted you to be aware."

The members of UnitedHealth Group are what makes their business successful and, in the world of healthcare, providing great service is what keeps patients and insured members coming back for more care. In their mission to help people live healthier lives, the company values integrity and compassion in all of their interactions with their members. "As simple as it sounds, always keeping the golden rule in mind and putting myself in the other person's shoes is how I always approach an interaction or conversation with customers that I have worked with in the past. In my current job, I am in a call center that fields calls from customers all over the world. If a customer is upset about a product they purchased, I take the time to listen to them and what their concerns are. I use reflective listening skills to ensure I hear their concerns correctly and then take action quickly. I find that most difficult conversations like this go well when customers know they are heard and that something is being done about it. In this role at UnitedHealth Group, billing issues can be a big concern for your members and I'll always prioritize quick action and resolution for them so they understand what is happening."

"Early in my career, I joined a customer service team that was experiencing some very serious response time issues and it was leading to a lack of customer retention. After spending some weeks on the job and assessing processes, or lack thereof, I approached my manager with some ideas on creating workflow processes and defining specific roles and duties of the team I was on. She loved the ideas and asked me to lead a workgroup moving forward on creating and implementing these new workflows. I was very proud to be asked and grabbed the bull by the horns and went to work on processes that are still used to this day. I know this same creative and innovative mindset will be important for me here at UnitedHealth Group and I'll be glad to bring it to this job."

Written by Ryan Brunner on January 23rd, 2024
Answer Example
"Combing over the fine details and ensuring my work is accurate is always something I have prided myself in. As an administrative professional, my success has always started with my ability to prioritize my work based on importance and ensuring that I have a calendar and to-do list that is up to date. I tend to focus on one task at a time through completion, and then move on to the next task. Of course, important things do arise and I need to set down what I'm doing to accomplish something urgent and I'm always willing to do that. In this role at UnitedHealth Group, I understand that I will be supporting a dynamic field-based team, processing referral requests, and responding to phone calls. 30. Talk about a time where you took an existing process and used your own creativity to make it better. What did you learn in this situation that you can bring to the team?
How to Answer
Under the UnitedHealth Group umbrella fall two complementary businesses, Optum and UnitedHealthcare. Make sure that your example clearly outlines how you identified a problem, thought carefully through solutions, and then the work you did to implement a new process.
Written by Ryan Brunner on January 24th, 2024
Answer Example
"As an internal auditor of over 15 years, automation of repetitive tasks has certainly come to more light in recent years with new software. A couple of years ago, I was at a national convention and got to talk with and see presentations from some great companies. Upon returning, I began thinking about how the process of my current team could be improved with new software and brought a proposal to my director. She knew that cost and time savings were of utmost importance, so I was tasked with conducting some studies on current labor hours and costs that could be saved and I was happy to oblige. In the end, we went with a great new software package that drastically increased our productivity in fieldwork and reporting. In coming to the UHG team, the high volume of claims here should always be open to improving the process for efficiency and I have an eye open for this."

Their claims team may be working with people who are struggling to pay bills or have discovered that they have a life-changing diagnosis. Those working in direct patient care and care in the community can face a number of emotional situations. It is important to the company's success that every interaction they have with patients and members leads to a bright spot in their day, so your interviewer wants to hear that you will bring that ability to the role you are interviewing for. Put some thought into a time when your actions and/or words brought happiness into someone's life. As you answer, paint a clear picture of how you did this and why you felt it was important.
Written by Ryan Brunner on January 24th, 2024
Answer Example
"As you are aware, my background is in drug and alcohol counseling, and ensuring that those recovering from addiction find that bright spark or emotion is very important in their recovery. During my time working on an intense inpatient unit, having really simple conversations about family and hobbies could provide that bright light at the end of the tunnel and I became very good at having these conversations. I remember one particular patient who was in detox for heroin addiction and was having a very tough initial few days on the unit. I took extra time that day to sit down and just talk about life, to find what it was outside of their addiction that truly made them happy. After finding out it was video gaming, I sought permission to get a unit brought into his room the next day and the patient was so excited and thankful. In this role with UHG, I will take pride in taking the extra time to ensure the happiness of the providers and members I will be working with."

How to Answer
If you take the time to read through UnitedHealth Group's code of conduct on its website, you'll quickly see that accountability and being responsible for your actions are key pieces of that code. The important things to key in on as you answer are holding yourself accountable, your ability to act swiftly to make things right, and what tasks will require a high sense of accountability.
Written by Ryan Brunner on January 26th, 2024
Answer Example
"In my early years as an RN Case Manager, I had a day where things went really awry with a few client emergencies and a winter storm that had hit our area. Knowing that the emergency clients were the top priority, I focused on their needs first and foremost and did what I could to drive and be onsite with them. Later that evening when I was back home, I remembered that I had forgotten to contact my regular visits for that day to reschedule. Knowing that it was too late at night to call them, I immediately reported this to my manager and made a plan for contacting them the next day and seeing them as soon as possible. Every client was happy to hear from me the next morning and I saw them all within the next week. My manager was also comfortable with my plan moving forward and thanked me for my honesty. I learned some great lessons from that day that I would bring here to the UnitedHealth Group team, as I know your members rely on this team for quick assessments and implementation of their care plans."

33. Tell me about a time you dealt with an unhappy customer or patient. How did you handle the situation and what was the outcome?
How to Answer
Each day, the team at UnitedHealth Group has to communicate with frustrated, mad, or distraught members and patients who are facing very difficult situations. With compassion as one of their care values, the staff there are expected to listen, advocate, and act with urgency for those they serve no matter what situation a member finds themselves in. It will be important for your interviewer to have the sense that you will always take this empathetic approach and maintain a positive attitude no matter what mood a person you are working with is in. If you will be in a direct member or patient-facing role with UHG, remember that a current health condition or financial situation regarding billing can cause some extreme emotions. Be sure that you think about a time you encountered someone in the past in a similar situation and talk through what the situation was, how you responded, and the positive result that came from your actions.
Written by Ryan Brunner on January 26th, 2024
Answer Example
"Just a couple of months ago, I was seeing an emergency patient that was experiencing some very severe tooth and gum pain and the examination was one of the toughest I've faced throughout my career. Their pain was very visible, but their anger was honestly a bit out of line. When my colleague and I were trying to get them to open their mouth for examination, the patient was writhing in pain and calling us some pretty bad names. Rather than take things personally, I could immediately see that they had severe inflammation and I put myself in their shoes. I kept a calm voice and explained what we were doing every step of the way so the patient knew when we'd be poking or prodding. The patient slowly began to calm down and by the time the dentist was ready to see them, the patient apologized and thanked us for helping. This empathetic approach is something I pride myself on and know it will be important for the UnitedHealth Group members I will be seeing in this role."

34. Have you ever disagreed with direction you received from your manager? What did you do and what was the outcome?
How to Answer
Building and further developing a modern and high-performing health system at UnitedHealth Group requires all staff to have a forward vision and a sense of innovation. The company is doing this today by streamlining and simplifying the healthcare experience for its members, its extensive vaccine research, and its strategic partnerships with healthcare providers and systems all over the world. All of this innovation started with groundbreaking ideas and your interviewer wants to hear that you are always willing to speak up when you feel you have a great idea, so they ask this question. Think about a time when you didn't hesitate to speak openly with a leader in a time when it was against the grain. Try to focus the majority of your response on your desire to do what is right and how you did this in a professional and respectful manner.
Written by Ryan Brunner on January 26th, 2024
Answer Example
"I can't say that I've disagreed or balked at specific direction from a director or manager during my career because that is not the type of person I am. But in cases where I had new ideas that weren't the typical way of doing things, I've never hesitated to speak my mind to try and better things or create more efficient processes. Three years ago, the team I supported was handling a large volume of new clients and I was responsible for entering new client data into our CMS and other systems. Sales were going out the door right away and I knew that I just wouldn't be able to keep up with getting everyone entered on time along with my other daily duties. While my manager felt it was an easy task, I asked them to come to shadow the work that I was doing just to add one customer to the systems. They quickly got me some help for my regular duties while I focused on the new entries over the next four days. In this role at UnitedHealth Group, it's great to know that I will be supporting a robust account management team and I'm confident that I can bring new and refreshing ideas to help in their support."

35. We seek to hire those with strong problem-solving skills. When were you able to successfully resolve a problem in the workplace?
How to Answer
The high-quality results that UnitedHealth Group strives to achieve through its core value of performance often require solid problem-solving skills from its staff. The key to answering a question like this is to have a good feel for the job you are interviewing for and discuss where you feel the pain points might be that require keen problem-solving abilities. For example, when looking at teams that work with insured members, there will be a great amount of policy details that they might have to reference and a new person on that team needs to be able to think on their feet quickly and think resourcefully. Remember to also answer the question by talking about a time you used your problem-solving skills to resolve a tough issue.
Written by Ryan Brunner on January 24th, 2024
Answer Example
"I would envision that a field account manager here at UnitedHealth Group has to be able to answer tough questions from customers on benefits and coverage questions and I want you to be assured that I would come here as a very resourceful person that's ready to learn and solve these customer issues. Last year in my current job, I had a customer call me in the evening who was experiencing some downtime in their HR and Benefits system that we had sold them. Being a customer-focused rep, I didn't wait until the morning to help solve their issue. Rather, I got on a three-way call with our IT support team and the customer and stayed on the entire call to ensure that things were up and ready for their staff that needed immediate access to the system."

Being able to overcome those differences and find common ground will be important for you, so your interviewer wants to hear you talk about a time when you turned a potentially negative relationship into a positive one. The keys to answering this question successfully are staying positive and elaborating on the things you did to ensure a great working relationship.

Answer Example
"I have a great ability to get along with and work successfully and cohesively with many personality types, even the most demanding and difficult to please. I can imagine that the passionate and motivated team here at UnitedHealth Group has some strong personalities as well. I think back to a few years ago when my current team had a new employee transfer to our team and it didn't take long to find out that this person was arrogant and thought they could do no wrong. During my time training them in our department, the new team member was playing on their phone, plugging away at emails, and frankly being rude. I could see where it would have been easy to let this go over my head and just continue to talk and train them, but that's not who I am. I very directly let them know of the expectations I had for their training and took the time to highlight the new tasks they would be facing so they would understand the importance. They appreciated that comment but continued to do this with others from what I found out later. Our working relationship from there went smoothly because I continued to have direct dialogue with them."

Answer Example
"Your success here at UnitedHealth Group in becoming one of the top Fortune 500 companies in the country has been built on the satisfaction you provide to the members you ensure, the patients you care for, and the healthcare providers you work with daily and I'm happy to bring a strong ability to continue growing these relationships moving forward. My ability to solidify relationships with those I work with starts with a sense of trust. To me, trust means doing what I say, saying what I do, and always ensuring that my attitude is positive with anyone I'm collaborating with. The members I would be working with will know that I care for their needs and take all actions possible to resolve issues."
